I, PATRICK HORTON, leave all my innocence, plus an overnight ticket to Kansas City to Mr. Rhoades, and my '49 International to anybody who likes to drag. I, KEITH LOGAN, leave my driving ability to Mike Snook. I, LESLIE ZIMMERMAN, just plain leave. 15 Class Prophecy of ’71 SALESMANS REPORT FOR THE WISHY-WASHY SHOE POLISH COMPANY OF WALLA-WALLA, WASH- INGTON April 23, 1991. Dear Sirs: This letter is in regard to my rather large expense account for the month of April. I was in the Topeka area peddling our fine product when I suddenly recalled that my old home town was nearby. So I drove out to Dover, Kansas. The old place sure has changed. I checked into the Dover Hilton Hotel, right across the street from the T. Scott Shopping Center and Mall. Having a few hours of day- light left, I decided to attempt to sell some of our glorious shoe polish. The first house I came to looked like something out of the Arabian Nights! It probably belonged to some Turkish Sultan. I knocked on the door and it was answered by none other than Sgt. BRAD BEAU GESTE METZLER of the Fighting French Foreign Legion. Brad! I exclaimed, 'What are you doing here and how can you afford this place since a sergeant in the Fighting French Foreign Legion only makes $47 a month? It helps when you marry the daughter of some oil-rich sultan, he said. Well, I decided to return to my hotel. I was crossing the street when I stepped on a pile of old ragged clothes. To my surprise, the clothes sat up. In them was a haggard old man that needed Scope and smelled like 90 Proof. Aren't you GALEN WRIGHT I cried. The one voted most likely to suc- ceed by the Class of '71? I most certainly am, he replied, as he lay back down in the gutter. This was too much for me. I then sought refuge in the local night club ''The Whirling Derby. To my sur- prise, the owner and manager was none other than NANCY HEPWORTH. I don't remember what hap- pened after that, but I do know that the next day was Sunday. I then went to church. The old Dover Federated Church is long gone and is now repalced by a glass and steel superstructure called the Dover Modern Church of Revelation and Recent Happenings. After a stirring sermon from the Honorable Right Reverend D. BLODGETT, I decided to visit the Dover Nursing Home. I asked for directions from a dog- catcher who turned out to be KEITH LOGAN. When I reached the nursing home I saw a shrivled up old man sitting on the porch babbling to himself. The nurse said he was PAT HORTON. I guess that's what happens when you live a riotious life. On the way back I passed the magnificent Lake Dover. Spotting the marina, I gazed upon a gold plated super- yacht tied up at the pier. I walked over to it and discovered that the owner and captain was LESLIE ZIMMERMAN, the Aristotle Onnasis of the United States. After a nice visit with Leslie, I returned to my hotel and prepared for a week of fine salesmanship. Your Loyal Salesman, WAYNE LUKERT P.S. Enclosed is my expense account for hotel, steak and lobster dinners, champagne, and caviar. A Night To Remember .. . ... The Grade School girls have had a rather illustrious volley ball season in the past three years. Led by Coach Bill Eddy, the girls have lost only one game during this three year span. Coach Eddy says that volley ball practice starts at the first of the year and emphasis is put on a strong serve and tough de- fense. The girls are also trained in working the net for a quick offensive position. This year, the Dover girls claimed seven victories in regular season play. They lost their only game in three years during the tournament, but battled back out of the losers bracket to place first in the district volley ball tourney. 73 BACK ROW: Vince Johnson, James Riley, Jack Backerman, Larry Lister, Dennis Colston, Coach Lyle Bracken. MEMORABILIA (A RECORD OF THINGS WORTHY OF REMEMBRANCE) eZ Mae Fm 4 se Now we come to that time of Man when all things must come to an end. Still, a Man must have some things to remember when all is done. So be it here. The Staff of the '71 Tiger have pieced together a chronicle of events and the classes of Dover High School. This way a Man can truly see that this is not the end, rather, only the beginning. History The first high school at Dover was in the 1880's. The teacher was the son of General J. C. Caldwell. Classes were held in the frame Congregational Church. Only a few of the names are known. They are John Tomson, Carrie Loomis, Harry Aldrich, Hattie Bassett, and Harris Bassett. The second high school in Dover was held at the new frame grade school erected in 1913. The teacher was George Dodds. Our present high school was started in 1920, with A. J. Bassett as the only teacher. Elsie Paulsen was a teacher the second year, and Lenore Lowry, Hildred Ross, and Hazel Smith being early teachers also. A group of parents and public spirited residents in the community felt a high school should be available to all the grade school graduates who wished to attend high school. but were unable to go to Topeka. Before the new brick high school was built in 1924-1925, high school was held in the same frame Congregational Church as in the 1880's because the new Federated Church was meeting in the old Baptist building. While in the school then, the students were involved in two sports, Basketball and Volleyball. Mr. John Voss did the excavation work for the basement of the original portion of our present school using farm work horses. There was no électricity in the new school building at first, so, lanterns had to be borrowed for any school activity in the evening. : In the Fall of 1925, the first Mannual Training class was started. Their class was held in our present boiler room. They made their own cupboards for their tools. In this same year the boys started playing Football and Baseball. In the Fall of 1934, the gym of the present school was built. The stone music and shop building was built in 1938, and the new addition of the school was added on in 1958. We are grateful to those who have contributed pictures and valuable information to assist us in compiling this history for our annual. Among those we would like to thank are: Mrs. Vey Spaulding (from her book, DOVER- THEN AND NOW), Mr. Charles Todd, and Mr. Floyd Voss. A Brief History of Dover, Kansas Dover was established on the banks of Mission Creek, sixteen miles southwest of Topeka, Kansas, in 1870. The name Dover, was derived from the fact that the first two families to settle here came from near Dover, England and from Dover, New Hampshire. Dover, at some time in its past has had; two grist mills, three cheese factories, a match factory, a wagon making business, two blacksmiths, three garages, two cream stations, two hardware stores, a post office, five places where gasoline could be purch ased, three grocery stores, a bank, a barber shop, a business school, an undertaker, a den- tist, a doctor, a drug store, a hotel, two restaurants, telephone office, and three churches. So one can see, Dover was in the past, a thriving little community. Today, business in the Dover area has dwindled to where we are left with one grocery store, a gas station, a post office, and a church. We still have a grade and high school, although the high school will consolidate in the fall of 1971, - The Dover State Bank was organized in 1905 under the direction of Charles Curtis (later Vice-President of the United States) and M. A. Lowe. In 1930, the Dover State Bank merged with the Guaranty Bank at Topeka. In 1895, final approval was given for the erection of a cheese factory on the east edge of Dover. The factory was later converted to a house and is now owned by Eldon Thomas. Also, another cheese factory was operated on the site now owned by Doran Snook. The first general store was established in 1872, but was all but wiped out by the grasshopper scourge in 1874 and 1875. Several stores were built and operated through the years, but only one has survived. In 1930, Thomas G. Scott bought the store in the I.O.0.F. building and still is operating it at this time. Other business in the Dover area today includes the Dover Oil Company owned and operated by Albert Randall and Steven Mercer. A charter for the American Legion at Dover was received in 1947. They met in the hall now called the Odd Fel- lows Hall. Formally it was called Somerset Hall, from the town of Somersetshire, England. The first church in Dover was the Baptist Church, built in 1867 on the land now owned by Ethel Reed. In 1872, the Methodist's erected a church on the land now owned by Vin Dudney. In 1874, a group of Congregational ministers met and decided to erect another church. It was called ''The First Congregational Church of Mission Creek Val- ley, '' and was located where the present day Dover Federated Church stands. In 1920, the Methodists and the Congregationalists decided to combine their churches, because after the first world war, the high cost of living made it difficult to maintain three churches. They formed the present Dover Federated Church. The first grade school was a one room log cabin built in 1865 and had an attendance of twelve students. The next school was a stone building which in 1913 was condemned and a new two room frame school was built. Then in 1951, the present day school house was erected. The first high school classes at Dover were held in the old frame Congregational Church during the 1880's. The next high school was a frame building erected in 1913, which is now owned by Harold Miller. In 1920, the present high school was built. In the fall of 1971, Dover will consolidate with Eskridge and Harveyville in the new Mission Valley High School, now under construction between the three communities. Just as it started out, Dover is still a small farming community southwest of Topeka. We still have the rich loam fields along Mission Creek and just as they were a century ago, the main crops are wheat, oats, corn, milo, and alfalfa. In the fall, the autumn leaves still decorate the landscape in a scheme of reds, yellows, golds, and browns. I hope, that a hundred years from now, kids will still be able to see this country with its natural beauty as it exists now, and not have to look in books and say, it must have been beautiful then. 79 BACK ROW: Erma Henderson Johnson, Marguerite Moran Mil- ler, Lela Starbird, Hazel Tomson, Betty Eddy, Ruth Burner.
