'Aff A , J' -x ?i f?- vi DEDICATION The seniors of 1958 take pride in dedicat- ing this book to the citizens of Dover community who have made it possible for us to have a high school, and to Mr. A. J. Bassett, our principal, who with unflagging interest has guided Dover High School from its modest beginnings to its present growth. It has perhaps never occurred to the pupils who enjoy its advantages today, that at one time not so long ago, there was no Dover High School. And yet, as we look back upon its brief history, we are amazed at the rapid strides the school has made. A Just eighteen years ago, a group of public spirited members of our community, who, fortun- etely for us, were able to look toward a future for the youth of the community, set out with a determination to orrenize a high school in this district. As a result of their efforts a high school vas organized, and with an enrollment of sixteen pupils and one teacher, Mr. Bassett, classes were begun in the building of the Congre- gational church. The first high school board was composed of Dr. Bradley, Mr. Frank Kemble, and Mrs. A. J. Bassett. At the first regular election, Mr. Charles Todd, Mr. Joe Tomson, and Mr. Claude Ross were elected as the permanent board. Mr. Todd served as director until 1953, when Mr. lf' 'rs fs lisemfn took his place. Nr. Ross served os clerk until 1936, when he was replrced by Mr. J. W. Butner. Mr. Tomson was treasurer until 1928, when he was succeeded by Mr. Kemble for three years. Mr. ' Bassett then served one year and resignedg Mr. Ray Firestone served for four years and upon his resignation in March, Mr. Woody was appoint- ed until the regular election in May, when Mr. T. J. Logan, our present clerk, was elected. V W by V ll I 'i:W:'hNNfWf GQQQQQQ Q'-QG!.je'. 'I' 'Q , 'NZ x .I 1 I KA I - ,x MH Q' '1 1 x Y 155, ga 1 .LQ g . ,-Q .N X I 4 g . The second year, 1921, the enrollment had increased to twenty, and another teacher, Miss Paulson, was added to the staff. The third year there were twenty-two pupils, and the fourth year, twenty- four. In 1924, Dover High School presented its first graduate, Russell Sage, with a diploma. From that time the enrollment and graduating classes have steadily increased. In 1934 a gymnasium-auditorium was added to the building and three years later, Dover High School was promoted to the rank of a Class B school. This year, with an enrollment of sixty-five, a staff of five teachers, and a graduating class of eleven seniors, we can look back with pride upon the growth of our high school and also look with hopeful expectation toward its im- provement and growth in the future. H Hr. A. J. Bassett has been principal of our school for eighteen years. Next in senior- ity is fr. Clyde Winter who has taught here for ten years. In addition to teaching various othe subjects, Mr. Winter has built up our manual training department to its present high standard Others who have served on the regular teaching staff have included, Miss Paulson, Miss Lowery, Miss Hildred Ross, Miss Hazel Smith Miss Mary Nace, Miss Walbeck, Miss Cynthia Payne, who was here for ten years, Miss Marguer- ite Aikin, Miss Faye Clark, Miss Merle Ross, Miss Bernice Kimble, Miss Marie Wood, Mrs. Harriet Barstow, Miss Leola Olsen. Part-time teachers of music have included Miss Julia Marshall, Miss Marjorie Gonzales, Mr. Otis Mumaw, Miss Katherine Jordan, and Mrs. Albin. Compiled by M. R. and I. During the first year, George Bennett left school and Donald Kahler, from Ross- ville, took his place. The next year the class lost Virginia Akers and Luella Ginter, and Naomi Peterson, who had taken her fresh- man year at Topeka High, joined the class. In Janua.y, 1936, the class mourned the death of Hugh George who died of pneumonia. In March, Thomas Noble came to the class from Olivette. On may Day, the Foods girls, Marjorie Rogers, Maxine Holtwick, Blanche Lister, Irma Henderson, Anna Hubbard, Earlmor Star- bird, and Naomi Peterson, gave a banquet for their mothers. The Foods girls, assisted by Dick But- ner and Donald Kohler, served the Junior- Senior Banquet under the direction of Miss Payne. The program and decorations all carried out a Cowboy setting. The next year the Juniors themselves planned the banquet, under the direction of Miss Woods and centered it around the Dutch theme. . ,,,. . an 5A A , , 1 ff ,J '53 in .. 3 simon cLAss HICTOHY Cconunuea .Near the close of the year the class held a funeral for the Class of '37. On the eve of the last day of school this class had a party to which each invited a guest. In September, 1937, there were twelve seniorsg Norma Beach had left school during the year beforeg Donald Kahler had gone to Colorado and Jack Berger to California. An all-school party was held in October at which the freshmen and Miss Olsen, the only new teacher, were ini- tiatedl The Seniors, under the supervision of Miss Kimble, decorated the hall for the football banquet. The Senior girls, assisted by Bernard Petty, served the banquet which had been prepared under the direction of Miss Olsen. The Senior basket ball team won a pennant at the interclass tournament which took place the day before Christmas vacation At the close of the first semester, Maxine Holtwick went to Kansas City to high school, leaving a class of eleven. For at the time it occurred, the phenomenon was the wonder of the scientific world. In fact, a group of eminent physicists are even now engaged upon some momentuous experiments in an endeavor to solve the mystery. Well, here is what happened: The senior class of '58 had gathered at the home of Dick Butner for a farewell party. We were seated around the fireplace, chatting cosily, when someone suggested that we turn on the radio and get a little music. Dick obligingly did so, and such shrieking and howling you never heard! Something had certainly gone wrong with the radio. Dick thought it was the battery, Bernard Juggled the tubes around, and Charles finally changeo the hook-up with the aerial Suddenly, a voice boomed forth from the speaker. HYou have been listening to the Honorable Richard K. Butner, who was elected United States senator from Kansas in the recent 1958 election. We left town at 4:15 A.M. with thirteen dollars of the class ,- money. Our first stop 1 was at Lawrence where we got out to rest a bit and drove through the University campus. We tried to get permission to go through the penitentiary at either Lansing or Leavenworth but were not admitted to either one. . We arrived in Kansas City just as the sun began to show above the horizon but it soon clouded over and there was e continual argument all day as to which direction we were going. In the morning we went through the Armour Packing Plant and from there we went to the airport where most of us enjoyed our first airplane ride. On our way to Swope Park, where we planned to eat our lunch, we were stopped by a hard-boiled cop who cou1dn't understand why we failed te see a certain stop sign. After the boys served the class with a picnic lunch which they had brought, we all walked around the park seeing the sights until 2:50 when the keepers began to feed the animals. We weren't hungry so we left. Our next stop was the ten-cent store where the girls shopped for souvenirs. Then the ,irls took the boys to eat at the Forum. La Vaun Nystrom, the only girl left in the class, must think that this is quite a Hman's worldn at times. However, she has not allowed the junior class to be forgotten in girls' activities, for she is a member of the Girls' Glei Club and of the Girls' Basketball Team, and also took a leading part in the junior play. In sports, in music, and lessons we do, We strive to lease and be honest too. P We're mischievous maybe, but we have fun, And we're proud of our class of twenty-one. First comes Ila with eyes of blue, To her class and friends she'll ever be true A pretty housewife for all to see, A happy home her's surely will be. Mildred Henner is true and dependable And does her work in a way quite commendable Never shirks when there's work to be done Always ready for a bit of fun, Helen is a jolly girl, She's far from being slow. She's going to be a teacher, And a good one too, I know. Norma Belle, a pretty lass Is a joily member of our so homore class, In basketball the team's all for herg She's our standby and top-notch scorer. There are very few things Robert can't do, He can wash, he can iron, and cook some too. He'll make some girl a mighty fine Wwife', And she will be happy all of her life. Eugene has never a moment of leisure. He studies first, then reads for pleasure. For all his friends he has a smile, And nothing seems to cramp his style. X x . Ward has a fine disposition And we prophesy for the lad That he'll sometime attain a position Of professor like his dad. Charles Kemble is happy and gay And often laughs away the day. To his schoolmates he's known as Bill And his greatest task is being still. Paul Croyle will be a Solomon When he has finished college. We marvel at how one boy's head Can hold such heaps of knowledge. Rex Corbet of musical fame will someday make himself a name. He whistles and sings and the flute he plays we hope to hear more of him one of these days. Harold Noble is a quiet lad Who never thinks of being bad. If into error he should fall 'Twould shock the teachers one and all. Here's Ray Hickey, better known as Mickey, Takes life as he finds it, ' . Doesn't seem to mind it. Just goes on his way, and calls it a day. There's a boy in our class named Howard Who's reserved but never a coward. Edward, just Ed or Junior to you Is always happy and never blue. In moving pictures he's so good, He really should 'go to Ho1lywood.W Of Charles Holmes what shall we say? He has a quiet thoughtful way. He studies hard to get his lessons So to the teachers he needs no confessions. Kenneth Hughes is always cheery For his life is never dreary. She also sent a Christmas Spirit to open the album and explain the pictures. Mr. Winter had constructed a large frame with swinging door, which looked exactly like a huge postcard album. As the Christmas Spirit tuned the pages of the album, living pictures in costume showed the Christmas customs in other countries. The pictures represented Christmas in England, France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Russia, Norway and Sweden, Holland, Germany, Nexico and the United States. Several of the members won county and state honors of which bgth the and the club are very proud. Walter Kghler and Bill Boler ranked first in their crop demonstration at the Silver Lake Fair and also the Topeka and Hutchinson State Fairs. Irma Henderson and Norma Belle Boler took first in the clothing demonstration at the Natlonal Livestock Show at Wichita. Orville Butner won first in model house- building at the Hutchinson State Fair. The boys' crop projects were hindered greatly by adverse weather conditions but they were not discouraged because many have signed up for another crop project. The girls, under the leadership of Mrs. Nystrom, showed exceptionally good results in home economics mainly clothing. Irma Henderson, Walter Kahler, Lakin Schwanke and Orville Butnsr, were chosen to S5-H8 in the Shawnee County chorus for 1958. Our club, under the direction of Mr. Schwanke, entered a one-act play, WSophie from Sandysvil1e,N in the county contest. Mr. Orville Schwanke and Mrs. Doris Nystrom were the mainstays of the club. Their enthusiasm and interest was an ex- cellent example to set before any young 4-H-er. The 4-H Club is a vital part of the school and community and deserves the support of every parent and teacher. Walter Kahler exchanged letters with a boy in Luxemburg, and Wayne Starbird, with a girl in British Guiana. Anna Hubbard began a correspondence with a girl in England which she still continues. In September, 1957, the club was re- organized. Several members received names and are writing to students in foreign countries. Because of the unsettled conditions in many countries it has become more difficult to keep up such friendships. However, those who have continued to write have found it ex- tremely interesting.
