“| f you were to apply the word diversity to Dover High School, it would be very easy to see that it is a word that describes our school perfectly. Dover High is unlike any of the surrounding schools due to its unique blend of cultures, not only among the student body, but also among the faculty. On July 4, 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated to the United States symbolizing liberty and freedom. Since then many immigrants from pround the world have moved to America. They brought with them diverse cultures and backgrounds. Historians call the United States a melting pot. Since Dover High has many students that were born in other parts of the world such as Africa, South America, Europe, and Asia, it can be considered a microcosm of the United States. Considering that Dover High is a relatively small school, it is still able to offer a variety of courses. These courses range from work and business oriented classes to college prep classes. To prepare students that are immediately entering the work force, our school offers classes in auto shop, cosmetology, graphic arts and home economics. The college prep classes range from basic to the advanced honors classes. Each academic subject has several levels of difficulty that enable students to challenge their own intellectual abilities. Because our school is represented by so many different cultures, it is very easy to see how the different backgrounds influence our everyday style. Bold, bright, wild and conservative are perfect adjectives used to describe the fashion trends seen in our school. While some are seen in up-to-date fashions, others are dressed in old, reliable jeans and tee-shirts. Hairstyles are another way that students express themselves. Tails have been replaced by waffles and spikes, and the bob is slowly being modified. There are many special and diverse qualities in Dover High that make it more than a typical school. Diversity itself allows students to be individuals, but it also teaches us to get along with one another. Since our school life is influenced by our friends, students at Dover High are able to learn interesting facts about many different customs and beliefs. As a result students at our school are prepared to deal with the many different nationalities and cultures that they encounter outside of high school. Because the people in our school are exposed to many different types of backgrounds, it is easy to see how they develop distinct personalities and preferences: thereby sharing a common bond. Even though we are small, Dover High is still able to operate and produce some of the finest students in our area. Diversity has created a school that is Just Our Style. 3
