“| f you were to apply the word diversity to Dover High School, it would be very easy to see that it is a word that describes our school perfectly. Dover High is unlike any of the surrounding schools due to its unique blend of cultures, not only among the student body, but also among the faculty. On July 4, 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated to the United States symbolizing liberty and freedom. Since then many immigrants from pround the world have moved to America. They brought with them diverse cultures and backgrounds. Historians call the United States a melting pot. Since Dover High has many students that were born in other parts of the world such as Africa, South America, Europe, and Asia, it can be considered a microcosm of the United States. Considering that Dover High is a relatively small school, it is still able to offer a variety of courses. These courses range from work and business oriented classes to college prep classes. To prepare students that are immediately entering the work force, our school offers classes in auto shop, cosmetology, graphic arts and home economics. The college prep classes range from basic to the advanced honors classes. Each academic subject has several levels of difficulty that enable students to challenge their own intellectual abilities. Because our school is represented by so many different cultures, it is very easy to see how the different backgrounds influence our everyday style. Bold, bright, wild and conservative are perfect adjectives used to describe the fashion trends seen in our school. While some are seen in up-to-date fashions, others are dressed in old, reliable jeans and tee-shirts. Hairstyles are another way that students express themselves. Tails have been replaced by waffles and spikes, and the bob is slowly being modified. There are many special and diverse qualities in Dover High that make it more than a typical school. Diversity itself allows students to be individuals, but it also teaches us to get along with one another. Since our school life is influenced by our friends, students at Dover High are able to learn interesting facts about many different customs and beliefs. As a result students at our school are prepared to deal with the many different nationalities and cultures that they encounter outside of high school. Because the people in our school are exposed to many different types of backgrounds, it is easy to see how they develop distinct personalities and preferences: thereby sharing a common bond. Even though we are small, Dover High is still able to operate and produce some of the finest students in our area. Diversity has created a school that is Just Our Style. 3 ■ A Mixture of Nationalities Below: Luis Pino, Sandra Camayo and Fatima Pino were born in Colombia and arrived in Dover in 1985. Opening 13 15 f [hi® !®ntt From the very beginning the band had many high hopes and anticipations for the coming year. It was mainly this positive attitude that enabled the band to work well together, even in the early stages, and to produce one of the best bands that this school has ever seen. During band camp, which took place the week of Aug. 18, the leadership and cooperation of the members was evident. For five days, basics, music and routines were drilled into everyone. Even when the sun was at its hottest or believe that the band is like a second family when you see all the time everyone puts into it. Hopefully we will be able to go on our dream trip to Florida.” says senior Patti Misyak. This years repertoire consisted of “Show Down”, The Love Theme from St. Elmo’s Fire”, “Stompin at the Savoy” and “Cherish.” These songs were relaxing, but still exciting enough with a beat that could linger in one's memory for a while. This year the marching band drum majors were Marianne @®§ ©ouS the rain was at its wettest the band was still able to accomplish something that has never been done during the six years that Mr. Zatorski has been director, and that was to roughly, but completely finish the whole half-time show by the end of the week. Out of all the activities in our school, there is one that especially promotes a sense of togetherness. Between practice in school and events out of school, band members are constantly pushed together. “It’s not hard to Regelski and Cathy Magliocchetti. Activities 17 Junior candidates for the National Honor Society are inducted into the group during a ceremony in June of the school year. The National Honor Society consists of selected students who must have a grade point average of 3.4 or higher. Candidates must also possess good character and leadership abilities. The National Honor Society hosts the annual blood drive at our school for the Red Cross. Students must be 17 years of age to donate blood. The Society also sells daffodils to raise money for the American Cancer Society. (At right is a list of seniors selected to NHS as juniors.) Above: Cathy Magliocchetti redeves her National Honor Society membership card from Mr. Middleton. 18 Activities ©MIT On November 11, 1986, the students at Dover High School had an opportunity to choose twenty seniors, ten boys and ten girls, to become Homecoming King and Queen. After the votes were calculated and the top ten boys and girls were announced, the senior class voted for five male candidates and five female candidates. The five girls and five boys receiving the highest amount of votes were announced the following day. The King and Queen and their court were announced at the Mendham football game. The winners were: King and Queen — Tom Mayes and Melinda McKnight, First runners up — Chris Welsch and Kathy McClellan, Second runners up — Louis Gyarmati and Noel Baker, Third runners up — Swade Jones and Yolanda Santana, Fourth runners-up — Rey Rosario and Eva Drosos. The psychology class and club deals with human behavior and topics of the human mind. For one class project each student becomes a parent to an egg for a week. This gives the student an idea of the responsibility involved with being a parent. The students pick a slip of paper from a box to see if their egg is male, female, or twins. The “parent must protect the egg from getting abused or broken during the week. Another activity is a trust experiment. The students have to trust their friend or partner to guide them safely around the school grounds as they are blindfolded. The Psychology club is composed of students who have taken or are enrolled in the the psychology class. Various trips outside of school are to institutions such as Greystone State Hospital and a trip to Green Wilderness. At Green Wilderness the students are shown some physical activities that helped them realize their self image. Activities 21 The annual International Festival for 1986 was held in the Dover High School cafeteria in April of the same year. The festival was organized by Mr. Nazzaro, the foreign language department chairman. All foreign language classes in the school participated in the preparation of the festival, not only in decorating but in organizing different cultural variety acts to perform the night of the festival. Entertainment was supplied by a Columbian dance group that performed the Cumbia, and Ashaki Dancers who danced to the popular song “Can’t you feel the beat within my heart.” Also performing was the Morristown International Folk Dancers who entertained the audience with Greek, German and Israeli dances. ®@©iigo©[fii Bottom: Kathy Mendez and Diana Olmedo perform the Cumbia. Activities 23 i@©dl GMgjIMs, Lfidlll© TDd® F®ID ©@[ffi)®(% ®Q ©FI! ,99 “Good Night, Ladies,” a farce in three acts, was produced on November 20 and 21 at Dover High. This hilarious comedy marked the first time since 1960 that a fall play has been done at Dover. Under the direction of Rob Mains and Laura Thwaites, both teachers at East Dover, Good Night, Ladies” had a cast and crew of about 20 high school students. These actors and set-builders put in long hours four times a week for two months in order to make the comedy the success it was. The side-splitting plot centered around Helen and Jane Raleigh who avoid losing their dormitory by persuading their brother, Sam, and Jane’s boyfriend, Jug Brown, to dress up in women’s clothes and im-personate their aunts as chap-erones. Among the best parts throughout the play, was George West who kept fainting at unfortunate moments, Dean Eggleby, the kiss scene between Sam and Lulu, and Jug’s line about the frog — “We fed him peanuts and he lived in a tree!” Right: Jessica Sisto watches as Greg Allison hands Mary Beth Fritch a telegram. The math team participates in six contests each year and provides students with the chance to solve difficult mathematical problems. The team is a member of the New Jersey Mathematics League, and sends it’s five highest scores on each test to be entered in league competition. Teams from schools all around the state, including many in Morris County, also send in their high scores and receive awards for the highest total scores at the end of the year. Members of the team pictured below are Greg Allison, Dan Burlew, Linda Brill, Ken Cenicola, Randy Davis, Kathy Dempsey, Jason Fabozzi, Sherwin James, Ben Loory, Lara Loory, Grisel Martinez, Evonne Olano, and Chris Welsch. After three contests the leading scorers for the team were Jason Fabozzi — 12 points, Randy Davis — 12, Jay Jardine — 12, and Sherwin James —11. 25 Activities On May 2,1986, the junior class and the Ashaki Dancers sponsored a fashion show entitled, A Spring Affair . The show was held in the auditorium and clothes from several stores in the Rockaway Townsqaure Mall were modeled. In between the different clothing categories several talent acts were able to perform. The finale of the show was a small dance number performed by the models in the evening wear category. The whole show was choreographed by Patti Misyak and without Mrs. Smith’s and Mrs. Towns’ organization the show would not have been as successful as it was. Besides the printing and selling of tickets, and the selecting and fitting of the clothes, everyone involved with the show had to attend the many rehearsals held after school during the week of the show. The school choir was composed of sixty-five talented members, two of whom were selected as members of the region chorus. The exceptional talent of Jennifer Smith and Sharon Lawrence helped the choir become a successful organization. Each year the school choir is involved with social activites that include several school concerts and local area concerts. Their music ranges from contemporary songs to classical pieces. Its main functions were to promote school spirit and to act -as a liasion between students and administration. Jason Fabozzi, Jay Jardine, Randy Davis, Bob Murphy. This year DHS participated in the nationwide Academic Decathlon for the first time. A highly competitive and purely academic competition, it provided a chance for students to gain in-depth knowledge in a variety of subjects while competing against other students of the same intellectual caliber. According to the rules, our team was comprised of four students with “A” averages, four with “B” averages and four with “C” averages. Under the direction of Mrs. Helen Cobb, the team met early every morning before classes from November to February. The regional competition was held on February 7, at CCM. Students from all over Morris County took multiple choice tests in a variety of subjects, wrote essays and gave speeches. In a field of more than fifty “A students, Lara Loory placed third and Jason Fabozzi placed first in the speech category. ©©©©Moira 30 Activities Far left: Mike Hintz watches intently during a computer club meeting as a program is explained on the Commodore computer. The computer club met every third Tuesday of each month either in the newly organized computer room or in the new room opposite the vice principal’s office. At these meetings, different brands of computers were demonstrated with various types of software. Members of the club were also available for extra help if anyone needed to learn more about the types of computers in the school. This past year Dover participated in a computer contest at Fairleigh Dickinson University Madison campus along with twenty other area high schools. Their task was to solve five programming problems. The Dover team members (shown above) thought the contest was an interesting experience but the problems were very difficult. The AFS club members continued their domestic exchange program with students in Lenoir, North Carolina, by spending five days with various families there from November 13-17. In addition to the refreshment stand, the club sold poinsettias as a fund raiser. On December 13, eleven students from our school were involved in a cheerleading competition at Mount Olive High school. Other competing schools were Hacketstown, St. John Vianney, Roxbury, Kittatinny, Morris Knolls, and Mt. Olive. The competition consisted of a junior varsity and a varsity division. Each competing squad had to perform a 2 minute cheer and a 3 minute pom pom routine. Dover s routine was choreographed by Joy Gorog with help from the other girls on the squad. For the last two years Dover’s junior varsity squad was the grand champions in that division. This year Dover participated in the varsity division for the first time and won three fourth place trophies. The awards were: Fourth place Cheer, Fourth place Pom pom routine and Fourth place Most Enthusiastic. Right: Daniel Ruiz adds a bit of paint to the reading tiger's book. 34 Hall Painting Throughout our school Tiger pride can be seen simply by looking at the walls. Every year a new addition of artwork has been painted on the walls and the result is a school with a character all its own. Under the direction of art teacher Mr. Krzywicki, murals were first painted in order to keep vandalism under control. The idea was to give the students something to be proud of so they would not write on the walls. Now the murals are being painted just to add a little bit of color to the halls and cafeteria. They publish the school paper, Tiger Tales, enter contests, and practice their creative writing skills throughout the year. Twenty members were enrolled in the group along with extras. The staff of the paper include editors: Doreen Cook, Jason Fabozzi, and Jay Jardine, Sports: Randy Davis, Photography: Jennifer Cornejo and Photography advisor Mr. Preiss. The club also entered two contests, The Quill and the New Jersey Press Womens contest in 18 categories. The journalism class also published their best poems and stories in a yearly magazine called “Reflections.” They have had Ray Fazzi a news reporter and Laura Boss a poet come in to talk to the class. All in all the journalism club is a popular club and many people enjoy it. Activities 37 n)D[5) very Wednesday evening during this past school year, approximately seventy members of the peer leadership group met at the YMCA in Randolph. At these meetings, the group discussed problems and planned events to help other students. Some of the planned events were trips to the Dover elementary schools where the club members talked to the young students and tried to help them with any problems they might have had. The group also went on several retreats to Linden MacDonald where they received further training. Peer Leadership sponsored a drug awareness day where they performed skits or psychodramas and a bowl-a-thon that featured student-teacher teams in a tournament. Mark Meola, Rich Smith, and Jason Streko show their version of 60 s fashion. For millions of teens, I want my MTV! has become a catch-phrase in the world of music videos. For about one hundred of our students this familiar slogan changed to, I want to be on MTV! They had the opportunity when Eddie Money filmed his latest video, I Wanna Go Back on location in Dover. Utilizing the Joe Kubert School of Art (formerly DHS) and various scenes from downtown Dover, students appeared in the video as extras. On December 15, students were clothed in sixties garb to simulate Eddie Money’s fan- tasy of returning to his high school days. The following night, students portrayed modern day concert goers. Both nights of filming were exhausting for all involved as the time of filming totaled sixteen hours. However, exhaustion was put aside as Eddie Money and his band jammed between takes and turned the old gym into a dance hall. The late nights of filming did not bother the students who were excited to meet a rock star and the chance to be on a MTV premier video. On March 13 and 14th, Dover High School presented the Broadway smash hit, “Hello Dolly”. The show, directed by Mr. Ed Daniels, was a success with Sharon Lawerence leading the cast as matchmaker, Dolly Levi. Her talents shone as she matched up the mature millineress, Irene Malloy, played by Mary Beth Fritch and the bubbly Minnie Fay (Jennifer Smith) with the inexperienced store clerks, Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker, played by Tom McConnell and Jason Fabozzi respectively. The showstopping scene was in the Har-monia Gardens Restaurant where the chorus, performing as waiters, sang “Hello Dolly” and danced to the wonderful voice of the hilarious Dolly Levi. In the end, Dolly catches the uncatchable tightwad, Horace Van-dergelder, played by Ken Cenicola, and becomes Mrs. Horace Vander-gelder. This year the club traveled to Smuggler's Notch, Vermont on February 6,7,and 8th. Because of uncooperative weather conditions at the start of the ski season, one of the only day trips taken was to Camelback. Many others were planned but postponed until the end of the season. Forty five students came out to form 15 teams. The teams were split up into 3 divisions, the orange, black and white division. After nine weeks of bowling the top team from each division was eligible for the playoffs. Out of the remaining twelve teams, the three with the best record also qualified for the playoffs. During the last four years many changes had taken place throughout the school as well as the town of Dover. During these times of change, the senior class supported each other as well as the town. Magazines like Muscle and Fitness, and Flex are dedicated to showing the public the top body builders around the world, and very often reveal the secrets that have made these people as successful as they are. Over the past two years senior Rey Rosario has taken the body building field by storm. Rey was featured in the teen section of Flex magazine and was given the nickname ‘Secret Weapon , a title he has every intention of living up to. On April 5, 1986, Rey was in the New Jersey Body Building Championships held at Montclair High School. In order to compete in this competition, Rey dieted and trained for twelve weeks with his partner George Cole. In order to compete in the middle weight category (154-176 lbs), Rey lost 40 pounds. His diet consisted of high protein and low carbohydrates and fats. For twelve weeks he lived on egg whites, baked potatoes, rice cakes, turkey breast, fruit drinks, and plenty of salad. To go along with his diet, Rey went through a series of weight training exercises. To build up his chest, Rey bench pressed 370 lbs; for his thighs, he did squats with 465 lbs; and to build up his shoulders, he did the military press with 230 lbs. In addition to this Rey also took an aerobics exercise class. Overall, Rey finished fourth in his first competition and even though he did not win. he was “satisfied with himself. Rey said, My one mistake was to overdiet. This year with his new partner Nelson Ramos, Rey is looking forward to competing in the following contests: Mr. New Jersey cup, Teen Age New Jersey and Teen Age America. Rey also stated that his family, friends, and especially his girlfriend Chris Porphy, were all very supportive with his interest in body building. Three others soon followed, the last one being held on December 8. Choosing a college is an important step, and college days help the junior and senior students familiarize themselves with colleges from all over the United States. Representatives from the various colleges distribute pamphlets about their school in the cafeteria during periods 2 and 3. An interested stu- dent may obtain a pass from the guidance office. After receiving permission from one's teacher the student may attend mini-college day. Asking questions of the college representatives and obtaining information from any colleges that spark one’s interest are the purposes of mini-college day. Penn State, Trenton State, Rutgers, and University of Delaware were among the 55 colleges represented at mini college days this year. Melissa A. The night was filled with dining and dancing. After hors d'ouvres, the juniors were served prime ribs, potatoes, carrots, with strawberry ice cream and cake to top it all off. The couples danced to old and new songs played by the Dee Jay Express, including the theme song, “If Only For One Night by Luther Vandross. Dan Burlew and Sue Beadle were crowned king and queen of the dance. Afterwards, everyone received a champagne glass and the girls received a red silk rose as remembrances of the junior prom. Seniors 61 There are many different types of activities that students get involved with after school. Whether students do it for money or just as a community service, many are doing some form of teaching. Patti Misyak is one student who has spent the last three years teaching Catholic Catechetical Doctrine at her church, St. Theresa s in Succasunna. Patti volunteers her time weekly to teach young children about their religion. This year Patti taught a third grade class of twelve students. When she was asked why she taught C.C.D. Patti said “I like to work with little children, and it’s a way to be involved with the community.” Patti’s future includes going to college for a degree in architecture. She hopes she will still be able to teach somewhere after high school. This AFS experience has opened my eyes to how people in another country live and how individuals of different cultures can live together as a family. I have learned about American culture, habits and their thoughts and feelings about other countries. Learning how to adjust to living in a different country, with a new family was also a good experience. Meeting new people and making new friends was nice. Besides my American friends, I also met many exchange students from around the world. It was great being able to share similar stages of my experience with them. Experiencing the difference between schools in Germany and the US was an experience in itself. I have never walked so much in school. In Germany the teachers change classes, not the students. Spending this year in New Jersey was quite interesting. Being in Dover was a nice change for me since I live in a big city in Germany. Life here is more hectic than in Germany and I found this to be too fast paced for me. I am really happy to have had this AFS experience. I have met some nice people and I have made some wonderful life-long friends. I will always remember the year I spent in Dover and at DHS. Mr. Arway has logged the most time at DHS as both teacher and administrator for 35 years. Leaving his position in December 1986. he plann- ed to rest a lot in his retirement Also a teacher of 35 years. Mr. Sutton planned to end his 31 years here as an English teacher and chairman of the English Department. His previous teaching was at Roxbury High School. His future plans included extensive travel and. of course, reading. A thirty year veteran of our school system. Mr. Dunn also left at the conclusion of this year. Teaching both Latin and English classes during his stint at Dover, he planned to take it easy, travel, and catch up on work around the house. Mrs. Ziegler had been at Dover for I6V2 years in the foreign language department teaching French and more recently E.S.L (English as a Second Language). She hoped to continue teaching near her new home in Florida Finally. Mrs. Kertcher. affectionately known to students as Frau for 15 years left to pursue a new career in counselling. Frau was responsible for the GAPP exchange at Dover. German culture was an integral part of her classes. She often supplemented her classroom curriculum with visits and talks from German parents and family. The Year of the Tiger. Bill Arway was the coach of Dover High’s football team that finished the year with a record of 9-0. The team won the conference which at that time was the Iron Area Conference. The team was awarded the state championship of Group 2 Section II. Many football teams played for Dover after that championship year. Some of those teams had winning records; some had losing records. A few even had winless records. All of them wanted to win, but none of them ever won the conference title in football. In 1982, Bill Arway retired from coaching football at Dover and an assistant received the command of the football program. In Jerry Tardive’s first year at the helm the team finished with a 5-3-1 record. Two years later, Dover made its first appearance in the state football playoffs. Dover went on to win the state title with an 8-3 record. At the same time, the team was in contention for the Iron Hills Conference title. They lost their last conference game to West Morris and with that any hope they had of winning the title. In 1985, the football team was still a strong unit as they entered the state playoffs for the second straight year. This time the team lost to eventual state champion, Hillside, in the first round. The very next week saw the team lose to West Morris as they came very close to the conference title again. The predictions for the team in 1986, were not very good. Even coach Tardive said, “We’ll be competitive. Hopefully we should be over .500. I have a good group of boys, but I really don’t know what to expect.’’ A rebuilding year was what the local newspapers had to say about the team. With only Conney Berger and Tom Mayes returning from the state championship team of 1984, everyone had counted the Tigers out for any post-season glory. What could the fans expect to see on the field during the 1986 season? What the fans of Dover football saw that season was a team that tied the Dover school record for the most wins during a season as the Tigers recorded a 9-2 record. In the process, the team lost only one game in the conference (to rival West Morris) but still managed to tie West Morris for the conference title by beating everybody else. The team was selected as the second seeded team in the state play-offs for the Group 2 Section II state title. In the play-offs the team defeated previously undefeated Caldwell and had to face another undefeated team, Jefferson, in the finals. Even though the team came up one game short of their goal — another state title, the season had to be called a huge success. Most of the players on the team were born in 1970, the last year Dover won a football conference title. This team certainly provided enough thrills throughout the season. Touchdown passes from George Rettas to Tom Mayes (the second top scorer in the county) brought the cheering fans to their feet. The running of Bill Saks, Dave Beadle, Dan Swayze and Doug Jones helped to keep Dover’s receivers open while Dover’s defense kept opposing quarterbacks on the run and out of sync with their receivers. Coach Tardive has compiled a coaching record of 34-15-1, a state championship and a conference title in just five years. Since the majority of the members of this team were underclassmen (three starters were sophomores), the seasons ahead should be bright ones indeed. Varsity Football Taam — Sitting: Bob Adams. Fall Sports 87 Concluding the season with a 6-1-2 record, the freshman football team upheld the winning tradition set by the previous freshman teams. A credit to the fine coaching, the freshman football program has only lost four games in the past three years. Contributing to this year’s fine record were: MVP-Aaron McQueen, running backs Rich Carter and Edwin Figueroa, and fullback Willy Lorenzo. Although they posted only a 2-6-1 record, the team contributed toward the “family” attitude of the entire football program. Guiding the team were coaches Bodnar and Spilman who maintained a positive attitude and inspired the players to “go for it” every game. With many returning J.V. starters, the prospects for next year look very promising. Kneeling: Evelyn Salgado, Johanna Altman, Andrea Giordano. 90 Cross Country The Tiger cross country teams enjoyed another successful season. The girls team registered a most rewarding season when it put together an 8-1 dual meet record under Coach Schiffman. The boys team was only 2-6 in dual meets but improved as the season progressed. In championship meets the team defeated most of the teams that had beaten them in earlier dual meets. The boys are coached by Coach Valentine, who finished his 20th season as head coach, and Carl Panetta, a former Tiger runner who has returned as an assistant coach. The girls’ season was highlighted by their championship efforts in the Iron Hills Conference, where they finished 7-0 in dual meets and won the championship meet easily. The Tigers also repeated as North Jersey Section 2, Group II champions and finished fourth in the Group II championships. They also won second place medals in the Morris County Championships and at the Lake Forest Invitational in Delaware. Individually, the top position on the team was taken by senior co-captain Yolanda Santana, one of New Jersey's top runners for the past four years. When she was injured or sick, sophomore teammates Jennifer Welch and Evelyn Salgado took over and contributed. Santana won the Iron Hills Conference and state sectional titles and in her last run on her home course established a course record with an 18:38 clocking. Finishing out the girls lineup were senior co-captain Heather Welch, freshmen Johanna Altman and Rosalea Aragon, and juniors Andrea Giordano and Stacey Reidinger. The boys' team became only the third Tiger team to win its own invitational when it pulled an upset in the Dover Invitational. Individuals who won awards throughout the season were junior Bill Oakes, the top Tiger in most meets, senior Steve Puchalski and sophomore Dan Schainen. Rounding out the varsity were senior captain Wilfredo Salada, senior Chuck Anthony, junior David Alvarado and sophomore David Benson. This group of students (mostly members of the yearbook staff and the student government) painted banners, blew up 150 balloons and hung orange and black streamers from the cafeteria ceiling. When the student body entered the cafeteria the next morning, the display of the school’s colors surprised one and all. The team definitely knew they had the best wishes from their classmates and teachers and would try to bring home another state title when they met undefeated Jefferson the next day. Fall Sports 93 The varsity soccer team under the guidance of coach Apicella recorded a 7-9-1 record. Offensive captains Everton Williams and Amos Ruiz both had 8 goals to lead the team. Sophomore Tim Burlew, who won the most improved player award, scored 7 goals. Defensive captains Rey Aragon and Julio Santana made up the heart” of the tiger defense. Each scored a goal and helped in shutting out three teams, including number six ranked Parsippany. Mike Welsch held the goalie position for most of the season and recorded ninety-six saves in eleven games. Coach Varin, entered his third year of coaching soccer. His junior varsity squad ended the season with a 3-11-2 record. Coach Varin counted on his captains Marcello Berniz. the leading scorer, and MVP Johnny Vazquez to lead the team. The team had a strong defense which shut out a impressive Parsippany team 1-0. The tigers are looking forward to a strong '87 season, which will see 7 of the 11 varsity starters still on the field. Games were played against such top ten county teams as West Morris, Mendham, and Morris Knolls. By instituting a new form of defense, the team was able to frustrate Morris Knoll's powerful offense. Hard work and dedication paid off when the girls recorded a 2-0 shutout win over Hackettstown. Leading the team were captains Tomi-Jo Leverington and Michele Secco, along with seniors Melinda McKnight, Felicia Guridys and Elizabeth Figueroa. Other contributing players were Jenny Cornejo, who made the all-county soccer team, freshman Mary DiPasquale and sophomores Shirlene Dujack, Michelle Daidone and Lorna McBeth. Despite their record, of 1-13 the team members felt a sense of loyalty towards one another. When it comes to lunch, students basically fall into three general schools of philosophy in the cafeteria: (1)The It’s cheap so who cares how it tastes? crowd-Those who simply eat the food and love it, forget about it, or hate it. (2)The Homemade beats schoolmade any day” group-Those who, day in and day out, pack a lunch and eat thier ham and cheese in blissful safety. (3)The No way am I staying in there and eating that food ! section-Those who travel dailey to outside eateries including Lori's and L L Deli. While the cost is more, the advantages of buying normal food appear to carry a heavier weight. After over two years in Dover High's cafeteria, the juniors have become very familiar with its offerings. In some ways it can bring an end to the first few weeks of the new school experience. As the suspense and the excitement of a new school begin to fade, freshmen then realize the true and practical purposes for their I.D.: to use the library’s facilities and for general identification. Or, does it take more time to adjust? Is the “Freshman Fear’’ still evident? Or was it ever really there to begin with? Some freshmen reply: “I don't think an I.D. card can make anyone feel totally accepted. I think it makes us feel just like we belong”, commented, Richard Browne. Laurie Sisto stated “Adjustment was no o problem for me. I think if you like school and have friends here, you can really have a great time.” When asked about “Freshman Fear”, freshman students replied contrastingly. Luis Spiliotopolous, perhaps the biggest of the freshman this year, replied “What fear ?” Shawn Gulley, a smaller freshman commented, “I think that on the day of the pep rally, freshmen didn’t know what to expect. Loo©k iflo©@D[n](g] After a 10-9 season last year, the outlook for the basketball team was very promising. Ken Maguire, Chris Welsch, George Rettas and Tony Gilliam were the returning seniors and heart of the team while sophomores John Hoffman and Bill Saks moved up from a freshman team that lost only two games the previous year. Coach Lafferty said, “The team will have depth. This is a real nice team with a lot of real teamwork.” Expectations were high but Lady Luck had other plans for the Tigers. The final record of the team (4-15) does not reflect the hard work and effort put forth this season. In almost every game the Tigers were competitive and the scoreboard showed seven games the Tigers lost by eight or less points. Because of their desire to win the team never gave up and kept the pressure on opposing teams no matter what the score. The leading scorer on the team was Ken Maguire with 269 points and the leading rebounders were John Hoffman and Bill Saks. The team had a few great games when they got off to a good start and let the opposing teams play catch up. In one of those types of games the Tigers upset Parsippany with four players scoring in double figures, Ken Maguire (20 points), John Hoffman (15 points), Chris Welsch (14 points), and Bill Saks (10 points). Another game saw the Tigers beat Boonton by 21 points after they had lost to them the first time by 24 points. Even though the Tigers will be losing a number of seniors to graduation, the return of the team leaders in rebounding and the experience of the junior varsity team should help turn things around next year. With these victories, the team was able to qualify for the JV County Tournament. Unfortunately the team was defeated by Mt. Olive in the first round. Hector Crespo received the Most Valuable Player award while averaging fifteen points a game. Walter Liles received the Most Improved Player award and averaged ten points per game. The young team, lacking in varsity experience as well as in height, worked on rebuilding the program for the future. With the talent of a freshman many sophomores and juniors it looks as if the years ahead will be bright ones. The squad gave conference teams a run for their money and came up with a 30-26 win over Parsippany and some tough one and three point losses to Mt. Olive, Roxbury, and Morris Hills. This years team leaders in scoring and rebounding were Andrea Giordano and T.J Leverington respectively. Many thanks to seniors T.J. Leverington, Patti Misyak, and Grisel Martinez for their contribution towards the building blocks of the future. The girls battled through the season against some of the best teams in the state. First year coach, Don Apicella, looked to the starting team of Cathy Dempsey, Denise Fleming, Sue Kaiser, Roula Gizas and Mary DiPasquale to pull out the team s 4 victories. Also contributing on the team were top shooter, Roula Gizas, and top rebounders, Sue Kaiser and Mary DiPasquale. The Lady Tigers finished the season with a 4-9 record. There were six girls and sixteen boys who competed for the Tigers during the winter. The Tiger girls finished second in the IHC and were the top small school in both the Morris County Relays and Championships. The highlight of the season was the IHC meet where the Tigers won four individual titles. Senior Yolanda Santana won the 600 and 2 mile runs; Cathy Magliocchetti won the shot and Dave Beadle won the boys’ 600. Yolanda Santana won her third indoor Morris County 2 mile championship. She and her teammates, Jen Welch and Michele Fredericks, won medals in the Group 2 State Championships. Dania Morales and Lisa Reidinger helped the girls win relay medals. In the boys’ competition, Dave Beadle and Bill Oakes, both juniors, were the Tiger leaders. Both of them won medals in the Morris County Championships. Beadle was one of the top 600 yard runners in the county and Oakes was one of the top 2 milers. Among the other young athletes who helped this year and should help in the future were sophomores Fernando Rodriguez and Dung Dinh and freshman Rich Vininski. Wrestling z Wdgdgmij TimdMooifiiB Tradition is a word that keeps the Dover wrestling program unique. This year's wrestling team kept building on tradition and went to the finals of the state sectionals. At the beginning of the season people had doubts about the quality of the team. The team started the season with losses to Randolph, Hanover Park, and West Morris; all of these teams Dover had beaten the previous year. Then the team seemed to find itself and worked together for an exciting victory over Parsippany, ranked 5 in the area. The twelve men that worked hard in practice and earned themselves a trip to the state playoffs were freshman Edwin Figueroa (5-8), sophomores Jose Planten (20-2-1) and Dan Schainen (9-8-1), juniors Edwin Matos (15-6), Reyes Aragon (5-12), tri-captain Henry Nieves (13-o) and Mickey Soto (8-8), and seniors tri-captain Steve Puchalski (18-5), Louis Gyarmati (8-10-1), Todd Paulus (6-14), Dave Hugee (2-7), and tri-captain Conney Berger (13-8). Other seniors that contributed were Ralph Cruz, Chuck Anthony, and Dave Dortch. Coaches Kris Hicok, Harry Vitale, and Tim Downs brought the team through what started out as a terrible season, but a final record of 6-6 and an exciting 24-24 criteria win over top seeded Peauannock in the semifinals of the uroup II Section II playoffs topped a season of inexperience in the lineup. In the sectional finals, Dover lost to Millburn but could console themselves with the fact that Dover has made the sectional playoffs more often than any other team in their section. That is a lot of tradition to keep building on, but the Dover teams will continue with the winning tradition as long as pride is still a part of the wrestlers. Mr. Arnold Tversky Mr. Frank Poulos Assistant Superintendent Superintendent 146 Administration At the close of this school year, a figure who has influenced the development of DHS for some thirty-eight years will have earned a well-deserved rest and retire. Mr. John A. Middleton, III (left) began his long and distinguished career in the Dover School system in 1949. At that time, the high school was located on Myrtle Avenue, and it was there that he began teaching social studies. Through the next four years, he became involved in guidance counseling and eventually, student scheduling. His rise to the helm of the school started in 1961 when he was named chairman of the Social Studies Department. Only one year later, Mr. Middleton became vice principal. During the years that followed, the location of DHS, a regional school in its early years, changed from Myrtle Ave to Grace Street. Mr. Middleton was instrumental in the planning, and transition of the school to its present North Dover site. In 1969, Mr. Middleton took on the responsibilities of the position of principal. Throughout his career, he has contributed much to the student body. His time consuming efforts in the classroom as well as out, have provided many students with life-long memories. Most extended trips taken by student organizations were planned through the efforts of Mr. Middleton. Band trips to locations such as Italy, Mexico, Canada and Massachusetts and the once perennial senior class trip to Washington D.C. all found their beginnings with our well-traveled principal. Mr. Middleton's dedicated contributions to our school have been well recognized. He will miss his colleagues, the faculty and students here, but is looking forward to enjoying life. His departing comment to the class of 1987 was, Make every moment count, so that you are prepared and ready for whatever may come your way in the future. Mr. Robert F. Coming off an 8-10 season, Coach Brown started his second year as varsity coach. He is building a winning tradition with a team of new faces. Scott Bruseo is the only returning letterman on the 1987 team. Coach Brown will be working with seniors Dan Burlew, Mike Hintz, Wilfredo Salada and Robert Culleny, all moving up from the junior varsity level. Coach Brown will also have Glenn Miller, the 1986 Freshman MVP, Bill Saks and Tim Burlew coming up from the freshman team to work with. Coach Lafferty guided the 1986 freshman team to the IHC conference championship during his premiere year of coaching. The 1986 freshman squad finished the season 12-2. The profits from a Hit-A-Thon were used to raise money for new equipment and an outdoor batting cage. The players on the varsity, junior varsity and freshman squads with the most hits were awarded a trophy. On the varsity level. Davey Soto won with 23 hits. A tie was recorded on the junior varsity level with Dan Burlew and Julio Gonzalez, each with 14 hits. The freshman leader was Glenn Miller with 33 hits. The 1986 softball team was the best in Dover High history. Leading the way for this years team are three returning varsity letter winners, T.J. Leverington, Tara Barth and Shirlene Dujack. This is a season of rebuilding for Coach Kaplan and his team. The 1986 varsity team was the first to advance to the semi-finals of the Morris County Tournament only to lose to Parsippany by one run. Another first for those Lady Tigers was to be ranked in the Star Ledger top 20. The team also set or tied 26 school records. The 1986 junior varsity team was not so successful, finishing with a record of 2-13. Leading the team were juniors Dorene Schwartz, Michele Secco, Jenny Crnarich and Irene Booth who have been promoted to varsity for the 1987 season. All are expected to do an outstanding job on the varsity level. The 1986 freshman team had a 9-6 record. Lorna McBeth received the most valuable player award and Michele Daidone earned the coaches award. The future of Dover softball looks bright as the young athletes of this team mature. The 1986 girls track team accomplished more than any other team, boys or girls, in the history of Dover High. Their accomplishments included: undefeated IHC Champions, Morris County Relay Champions. Morris County Small Schools Champions. Newark Academy Relay Champions and the coveted State Sectional Crown. Several times throughout the season the team was ranked number one in the area and finished with that distinction. Local papers awarded team and coach of the year honors to the girls and to Coach Valentine, head coach of the girls squad since 1973, as well as head coach of both teams for the past three years. Yolanda Santana, Andrea Giordano, Evelyn Salgado and Kim Hayes were honored as the all-area 4 x 400 team. During the season they set a school record in this event and broke their own record three times. Santana and Salgado combined wiith Jen Welch to form a formidable trio in the distance events. Michele Fredericks, along with Nhan Dinh and Kim Hayes established themselves as strong hurdlers, while Fredericks also teamed with Santana to set a school high-jump record of 10'6 . Hayes was also powerful in middle distances while Heather Welch and Stacey Reidinger also provided depth in these events. Sprints were covered by Andrea Giordano, who also excelled in the long jump. Salgado proved to be one of the best sprinters in the county with a clocking of 58.7 seconds in the 400. Rounding out the squad was the weight team of capt. Barbara Cloughley, Cathy Magliochetti and Donia Morales. With the loss of Cloughley s arm to graduation, this year's captains take on more responsibility as the Tigers look to repeat in 1987. Beadle also placed first in the 400 in the sectional meet. President Ronald Reagan declared war on drugs; five-million Americans declared war on hunger; and a small but significant group of concerned citizens declared war on nuclear arms as they participated in the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament. Dover’s community was involved in all of these developments as students became more active in drug support groups and participated in Hands Across America to eradicate hunger across the country. Also, Cresent Field was home” to members of the Peace March for three days in the fall as they trecked from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. Terrorism continued in Europe and the Middle East while Russia suffered the worst nuclear reactor disaster in history at the Chernobyl plant. One terrorist saga came to an end as Fr. Lawrence Jenco was released after nineteen months as a captive of pro-Iranian Shi’ite Muslims. Turmoil was resolved in the Philippines when Corazon Aquino defeated President Ferdinand Marcos. For her efforts against Marcos’ dictatorship, and for becoming the leader of that small but troubled nation, Aquino was named Woman of the Year by Time magazine. President Reagan suffered the worst year of his administration thus far as the Reykjavik Summit with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev failed and the biggest scandal in over a decade surfaced through arms dealings with Iran. These questionable actions instigated a Congressional investigation and as yet have not been resolved. In July, the nation paused for a celebration of patriotism as we commemorated the one-hundreth birthday of the Statue of Liberty. The New York City skyline exploded in a pyrotechnic barrage of colors! Just as the nation’s pride swelled with the explosion of fireworks in the summer night’s sky, an explosion of another kind led to the mourning of a nation earlier in the year. The loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger and its crew on January 28 brought the na- tion to tears. Another event which found Americans looking toward the heavens was the arrival of Halley s Comet, whose orbit brings it close enough to the earth for viewing only once every seventy-six years. In sports, there was plenty to cheer about, especially in the New York metropolitan area. The New York Mets defeated the Boston Red Sox in the World Series, and the New York Giants won the NFC and marched into the Super Bowl to defeat the Denver Broncos. In the entertainment industry, the album, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Live 1975 85 exploded to the top of the charts late in the year. Tom Cruise was the year’s hottest hunk in the year s highest grossing film, Top Gun which made over $170 million. Other prominent contributions from the film industry were Sigourney Weaver in Aliens and Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee . On a sad note, movie greats Cary Grant and James Cagney both left untouchable legacies when they died late in the year. Scobee. and Ronald E. McNair. On January 28, 1986, at approximately 11:40 a.m., the flight of Space Shuttle Mission 51-L abruptly ended in an explosion. Less than 2 minutes earlier, thousands of viewers and school children from across the country watched with joy and enthusiasm as the orbiter carried a crew of seven, among which was the first teacher to travel into space. It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of these men and women who were members of our NASA family, but it is more important to remember them for their bravery and zest for challenge. In President Reagan’s statement to the Nation, he said, The crew of the Shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them nor the last time we saw them — this morning — as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye, and ‘slipped the surly bonds of earth’ to ‘touch the face of God.’ ” Student Life 179 rui LnJ S® F©©dl ETLfD@[T0©®l On Sunday, May 25, 1986, millions of people from coast to coast set out for the day to join hands to raise money for the hungry people of America. Hands Across America was a plan designed to unite a great chain of people all the way across the United States. At approximately 3 o’clock in the afternoon on May 25, the people involved joined their hands, yelled, and sang songs written for the event. Hands Across America was an event which made history. Everyone involved became friends with the people around them. The line was formed for approximately 20 minutes. On the drive home from Rider College, where students from Dover High joined the Morris County group, a second line seemed to form. This line was formed by people in their cars. Horns were honked, hands were slapped, and people called out to one another. It was an experience that touched all involved. Six million people were needed to complete the chain across America. Between 6 to 7 million people participated in this chain. The chain was not completed since the desert in the West was deemed too hot for people to stand. Having everyone donate $10 or more, millions of dollars were raised to feed the hungry people of America. This was the goal of the day. Figures released by the group’s national office in Los Angeles showed New Jersey was second only to California in total donations and pledges among the 16 states in which the human chain was formed on May 25. The figures show some 225,000 New Jerseyans participated in the drive and contributed or pledged a total of $3,025,264. Every year the students turn on their spirit and enjoy the holiday that seems to have been made just for them. Costumes of every kind can be veiwed throughout the day. At the end of the day the student counsel holds it's annual Halloween parade in the gym. Awards are given to the best costumes in the following categories: ugliest, scariest, most original, and the funniest. The covers were printed in Texas and shipped to Malvern where the book was assembled. The approximate cost of publishing Volume 62 was $16,000.00. Our sales representative was Mr. Murray Howard. This 8’ 2x1 1 book contains 200 pages printed on 100 lb. enamel paper. The book also uses Smyth binding and is rounded and backed. Twelve pages are printed in four-color and nineteen pages are printed in spot color, sunrise red 40%. All body copy is set in Helvetica Standard with 10 pt. type. Captions are set in 8 pt. type. All headlines are set in Helvetica Medium Outline with 30 pt. type. Division pages are printed in Brush in 60 pt. type. The cover is two applied colors. One is a silkscreen of orange 811 and the other is a thermoscreen of black 910 on a base material color of grey 950. The cover is stone grain cut-out and the names are printed on the cover in white. The cover art work was designed by Patti Misyak. Senior class portraits were taken by Lorstan-Thomas Studios of Union, New Jersey, during the week of September 8-12, at the high school. Lorstan-Thomas Studios also took the underclassmen pictures on September 15. The photography studio representative was Mrs. Cynthia Becker. The book was sold for $30.00 during the week of November 18-25. Students could have purchased the book for $25.00 by paying in full. Students may also have received a free copy of the book by selling 15 boosters at $2.00 each by October 29.
