The oscilloscope is an electronic instrument that displays wave lengths representing electrical signals. Oscilloscopes are used by different types of people for different reasons. They are used by electrical engineers to test computers, radios, and other electrical equipment. Physicians find them useful when studying electrical impulses from the brain to the heart. Oscillations are the cause of the wave lengths. These wave lengths tend to form patterns. The patterns are then measured by periods, or the distance it takes the pattern to repeat itself. The wave length can also represent a voice pattern. If the voice is very deep, the period is very wide. The shriller the voice, the shorter the period becomes. Amplitude, the measure of the highest and the lowest peaks, also helps in identifying the way in which a person speaks. If the person speaks very softly, the amplitude is low. If a person speaks loudly, there would be a vast difference between the highest and the lowest points. Voice patterns are like fingerprints. A person can change their volume, but when talking normally, the bass or the shrill contained in the voice does not change. Experts who usually work with voice patterns can even read them just like most people would read a book. If it was possible to hook up an oscilloscope to Dover High School for an entire year there would by many different patterns produced because of the different voices. Throughout the year the voices would change in intensity. There would be the voices of fans at a sporting event which would reach a peak during the thrill of victory. In the music room one would hear the chorus singing or the the sounds of the band. In other places one would hear the sounds of teaching and classes that were being held. Other sounds would be the talking of friends or of a boy and girl friend exchanging caring phrases. No matter where one would go one would hear many different voices, different pitches and volumes. Out of all of these different voices, loud or soft, there would be only one voice that would not show up on the oscilloscope. That would be your voice - the inner voice that will decide your future. 2
