Despite a 25-18 loss to Hillside in the state play-offs, the Tigers had A MEMORABLE YEAR The 1985 Dover Tigers will remember their football season as a year of personality, power and pride. Names like Tom Chirip, who lead the team in quarterback sacks, and all-state lineman, Rick Torres, will not be names that are heard of once and forgotten as the years pass. The graduating seniors mark the four years since Coach Tardive first took over as head coach of the Tigers. He, along with coaches Beliveau, Micak. Fletcher, Bodnar and Spilman, will never forget the men they first started out with as freshmen. The Tiger back field consisted of quarterback Junior Gwaltney, halfbacks Keith Smith and Rob English, and fullback Bill Swayze. Keith Smith was also mentioned in local papers as one of the most dangerous kickoff return specialists in North Jersey. In his last game as a senior, Keith returned the opening kickoff atrainst West Morris for a 93 yard touchdown. The biggest element of excitement in 1985 was a play called “Refrigerator Left.” This play, headed by Rodney Lane and Conney Berger, blew out defensive players as Bill Swayze busted his way upfield for the yardage the Tigers needed. The outstanding offensive and defensive linemen Tom Chirp, Craig McPeek, John Zanotti, Dave Alperti, and Rick Torres could always be counted on to blast holes and blast opposing players in this 7-3 season. Other exciting players that had the fans on the edge of their seats were: Noel Blackman whose Kamikaze tactics on the kickoff team will be the example for all others to follow in the years to come, Don Davis, a starter on defense in the backfield, and Anthony Smith and Anel Abreu, who made exciting catches throughout the season. The pass from Junior Gwaltney to Anthony Smith for a touchdown in the West Morris battle that put the Tigers ahead 15-14, and fired the hopes of a conference championship, will linger in the memories of the fans who attended the final game of the 1985 season. Tom Toohey, John Wilkerson, John Edwards. Walter Piccolo, Rich Gyure, and Russ Gyure also helped to contribute to the winning season that packed the stands not only at Hamilton Field but at various away games. After these players graduate and move on with their lives, they will remember not only their great efforts in team victories but most of all, they will remember the life long friends they made in their winning season. The great football tradition at Dover High School will continue in the 1986 season as returning let-termen, Tom Mayes and Conney Berger, provide a base on which to launch the 1986 team. VARSITY: 1st row - Anthony Cardone, Louis Gyarmati, David Hugee. John Wilkerson, Keith Smith, Robert English, Tom Mayes, Don Davis. Irving Figueroa. AN INJURY-PLAGUED SEASON The 1985 Dover Girls Varsity Soccer Team started the season with high hopes for improvement from the previous season. All but two letter winners were returning for the Lady Tigers. All-Area performers, Vickie Robinson, Colleen Flaherty and Sue Dallalah, were returning for their senior years. Injuries hit the Lady Tigers early and hard, however, as Barbara Cloughley and then Noel Baker were lost for the season with knee injuries. Tomi-Jo Leverington, Michele Secco, Sue Dallalah, Vickie Robinson and Jennifer McCann soon joined the injured list. As a result, Dover had to cancel the junior varsity team and start many junior varsity players against top state powers such as Mendham, Randolph and West Morris. Even against such adversity, the Lady Tigers played with pride and enthusiasm, beating Parsippany Hills and gaining a hard fought tie with a tough Bridgewater-West squad. Tough one goal losses to Hackettstown, Hanover Park and Warren Hills followed. Many younger players gathered valuable varsity experience and the future looks bright. Tammi Brown, Jen Corenejo and freshman, Shirleen Du-Jack, should provide a strong nucleus for the 1986 season. Soccer
