Bill Brown The Dover Tiger Football Program experienced its most successful season in several years. The Varsity, in posting a 6-2-1 record, fell only three points short of an undefeated season. The Junior Varsity captured the Iron Hills Conference-Hills Division crown with a 7-1 record. The Varsity opened its season under the lights at Hamilton Field with an impressive 21-0 whitewashing of the Delbarton Green Wave. In recording the shut-out, the Tigers displayed a tough defense and a potent running attack. The perenially tough Randolph Rams were the Tigers' next victim. In a come from behind victory, the Rams were convincingly defeated in a game that seethed with excitement. Traveling to Boonton, the Tigers were victorious again, with a 28-14 win against an improved Bomber squad. Disaster struck in the form of the mighty Knights from Morris Hills. In a game that will long be remembered, the Tigers moved the ball up and down the field with speed and power. An unsuccessful two point conversion was the deciding factor in the 14-13 heart- breaker. Fighting to regain momentum, the Tigers traveled to Mount Olive to take on the Marauders. With both teams playing stingy defense, time ran out on the Tigers. The game ended in 7-7 deadback. Then at West Orange Mountain, the extra point problem again showed its ugly face as Dover lost 14-12 to the Rams. The Tigers, struggling to relocate the road to victory, were pitted against the Hanover Park Hornets on Parent's Day. The Tigers were back on track with a 27-8 thrashing of the Hornets. Traveling to West Morris, the Tigers were faced with the ominous task of stopping one of the premier backs in the county. The Tigers did their job well and emerged decisively victorious 27-7. The season climaxed on Thanksgiving Day morning against arch-rival Roxbury. The Tigers demonstrated an aerial display scoring the winning touchdown on a 60 yard pin play. Final score — 20-13. The battle reflected the ups and down of the season, but again the character of the team emerged. The victory was a fitting end to a successful season for the Dover Tigers. The Tiger Boys Cross Country Team returned to championship form in 1981 when it won its third Hills Division crown in the Iron Hills Conference. The Tigers had an overall record of 8-1, losing only to Morris Hills (28-29) on opening day. The loss prevented an unbeaten season but was overlooked as the Tigers went on to win the IHC championship meet with 35 points and were crowned as the division champions. The Tigers also had one of their best finishes ever in the Morris County championships with a fourth place finish. In the state sectionals, the Tigers, who battled illness and injury through much of the season, finished third and qualified for the state Group II championships, where they were eighth of 20 teams. Individually, Senior Ken Loren and Junior Tom Orlandi were the top runners. Orlandi won the Lake forest Invitational and was the Iron Hills Conference champion. Loren was the team leader during the second half of the season, placing third in the conference, eighth in a tough Morris County meet, second in the sectionals, and 14th in the Group II championships. Together, the Tigers never lost an individual dual meet; with Ken Loren, Tom Orlandi, Dave Inglis, Mike Sweeney and Randy Valentine all winning races. Above: Co-Captain Jay Thomson, Coach Valentine and Co-Captain Ken Loren. LEFT TO RIGHT: Co-Captain Ken Loren finished off a fine cross country career by helping the Tigers win the Iron Hills Conference title. There were eight girls on the team but through most of the season only five or six girls were available because of illness or injury. The Tigerettes, under first year coach Wendy Huron, kept alive the winning streak they have striven for since 1973. The girls finished with a 5-3 record including a 3-3 Iron Hills Conference meet. The Tigerettes were led by seniors Julie Altman and Lynn Puchalski. During the early part of the season, Puchalski showed herself to be one of Morris County’s best runners but she was sidelined by a leg injury midway through the season, and Altman became the team leader. Other girls on the team were juniors Karen Chaparro and Sue Lowe, sophomore Vickie Durdunas and freshmen Carolyn Malloy, Kathy Maguire and Janine Bellows. The highlights of the season included a one-point victory over Morris Hills and wins over Whippany Park and Roxbury. The Tigerettes finished fourth in the Iron Hills Conference. When post-season honors were passed out, Altman and Puchalski were given honorable mention by the Daily Advance. DOVER GOES POLITICAL 41 Freshmen As a Student Council representative, I have asked the Freshman student body what some of their ideas for fund-raisers were. Their answers ranged from ice scrapers to baseball shirts with stuffed tigers, pens, pencils and notebooks in between. We, as a class, would like to raise money to help ourselves have four successful years at Dover High School. We want to hold two successful proms during our last two years here at Dover. With Mr. Sturm as our advisor, I know any project we undertake will certainly be successful. Although he is missing from our class officer picture, he is very involved with our class and does everything he can to help make it better. Through tough defense and a brilliant offense led by Senior Scott Wiggins, the Tigers landed a position in the State Playoffs. The contributing Seniors, Ernie Taylor, Simeon Terry, Terry Murphy, Jay Sherwood, Scott Wiggins and Joe Green helped to carry the Tigers through their successful season. The underclassmen also played an important part in this year’s season. The Juniors were Vincent Clark, Roger De Vries, Ronald Sankev and Jerry Vecchia. The Sophomores were Otis Braswell, Daryl Dunn and Doug Sliker. This year's season was especially important for Senior Scott Wiggins. He reached the coveted 1,000 career points mark on February 5, 1982 against Mount Olive. This was last done in 1978. These were the three major goals set for the team and they were achieved. The season was highlighted by wins over archrivals Boon-ton, West Morris, and Morris Hills, and by a six game win streak. The Lady Tigers were led by Seniors Julie Altman, Kim Blackmon and Laura Davies. Junior, Sandra Clowney, who became the leading rebounder in D.H.S. history, heads the list of returning varsity letter winners for next year. Returning with Sandra are Eileen Bobo, Maggie Styring and Margie Corby. Led by top scorer Darleru Gwatlney and one of the best J.V. defensive players in the county. Carmen Acevedo, the team showed strong improvement as the season progressed. Julie Altman became the second girl and the fifth player in Dover history to score 1000 points. Julie scored over 1100 points and is now the career scoring leader. She is also number 1 in career steals and number 2 in career rebounds. In each of her four Varsity years. Julie led the team in scoring. 57 WINTER TRACK First Row: Joseph Hartman. Ted Pallis. The Tigers took to the indoor halls as the weather became colder and winter track began. This year's boys' team had no dual meets but participated in invitational meets and championships from December through the beginning of March. The highlight of the boys' season came in the Iron Hills Conference championship when Tom Orlandi won the mile title to give him his second IHC crown of the year (he earlier had won the cross country title). In that meet, he was also third in the two-mile run and Ken Loren was fifth in the two-mile. One of the pleasant surprises in the season was the high jumping of senior Jay Thomson, who cleared 5-8 on several occasions. When it came time for the state meet, Junior Tom Orlandi placed fifth in the Group II state championships to qualify for the Meet of Champions. His best clocking was the 4:35 that he ran in the Group II championships. Captain Junior Ruiz was the team's top sprinter and led off several relay teams which placed in invitational and in the Morris County Relays. The top newcomers were senior Scott Gordon, who was among the top quarter milers in the IHC, and freshmen Randy Valentine, who won the Morris County 880 championship. Other varsity award winners were quarter milers Rich Fallon and Paul Fritch, distance runner Mike Sweeney, who won several sophomore medals, and half miler Eric Shuler. The team had its first taste ever of victory in the history of Dover swimming against Mountain. Mrs. Barbara Baker, the coach for the '82 swimmers, focused the team's efforts on improving stroke mechanics, which in turn improved times. Nine out of the ten school records had been broken by the completion of the swim season. Dedication and desire were evident among these students as they jumped into the West Morris YMCA pool at 5:30 a.m. for their workout. The 1981-82 Wrestling Tigers completed one of the best years in the school's history, finishing the dual meet season a perfect 15-0, and winning the Iron Hills Conference for the first time ever. The team made a trip to Virginia for a quadrangular meet and winning all three matches established Dover as a Wrestling Power. The Tigers became the first team to ever win back District Tournaments two different times. The Tigers were champs in 1970-71 and 1981 and currently the 1982 District XV Champions. Coach Hicok was named District XV coach of the year for the second straight year. The team went into the state sectional playoffs for the third consecutive year. The Tigers fell to Warren Hills for their only loss, to finish second in Group II, Section 2, and with a final record of 16-1. Eight Wrestlers moved into the Region IV Tournament, the most ever for Dover, hoping for a Regional title and a trip to Princeton for a state title. Frank Santana, Juan Valle. Although the Dover American Field Service was unable to host an exchange student this year because of the lack of a family, they again had a very successful and active year. They hosted seventeen A.F.S. students for a weekend of much fun. These students represented many of the foreign countries that make up the A.F.S. program. The chapter also hosted a temporary student from Costa Rica. Andres Castro, who was being placed with another American family. The annual orange and grapefruit sale was again a successful fund raiser for the club's purposes. On December 4, we are sponsoring a Punk-Out day for the entire school. Crazy colored hair and wild clothes will be the order of the day. When spring rolls around, we will be working on plans for a car wash and possiblly a volleyball marathon. Our class officers include an efficient money manager, Dana Massuk, treasurer; an efficient worker, Denise Clark, vice-president; a determined worker, Lisa Murgola, secretary; and myself, Michelle Palmieri, class president. The best friend of the class of '84 is our advisor, Mr. Kraus. It is with his able assistance that our plans are fulfilled. We would like to thank him for all his help. Roger DeVries, Lou Taxiarchou, Tom MacDonald, and Matt Shubilla will be vying for the outfield positions. With last year’s infield returning, the Tigers will be strong defensively. If all things fall into place the team should be in the thick of the conference and county championships. Co-Captains Junior Ruiz and Scott Wiggins. Coaches Brown, Tardive, and Riley. Julie will divide her time between pitcher and shortstop. Laura will handle the catching chores. Last year's leading hitter. Sophomore Margie Corby, returns to pitch and to play the outfield. Her development on the mound could be the key to a successful season. Other returning letterwinners are Val Germ, Eileen Bobo. Maggie Styring and Alice Carey. Promising Newcomers are Don-nese Cheatham, Kristin Gilbert, Cyndi McConnell, Diane Brennan, Ann Ker-nor, Ellen Booth, Sue Secco, Sandra Clowney, and Dawn Alperti. Because of the large turn-out, a freshman team was added to the program. This will give more girls a chance to play, and will also brighten the future of Dover Softball. The 1982 Tiger Track Team was looking to win as many meets as possible in the tough Hills Division of the Iron Hills Conference. Missing from last year’s 6-5 team is new school record holder Eric Harris, who put the shot 55 feet, 9 inches. The team’s strengths center around the distance events, where the Tigers are led by Senior Ken Loren and Junior Tom Orlandi. Other distance runners include juniors Eric Shuler and Dave Inglis, sophomores Mike Sweeney and Mark McKnight and freshmen Randy Valentine, Kevin Loren and Bob Waltz. A good crew of throwers will be led by Bill Schoonmaker and Dennis Chavis with Joe Smith and Tim Jurkovich hurling the javelin. Pole Vaulter Jim Bonner, high jumper Jay Thomson and long jumper Bob Horvath gave the Tigers jumping experience. Paul Fritch, Rick Fallon, John VanRy, Bob Apgar, Bob Horvath and Joe Smith will handle the sprints and hurdles. The Tigers opened their season at the Kearny Relays, in early April and expected to Finish at the State Meet of Champions in June. Mr. Gallo is in his I4th year as head coach and is completing his 29th year as a track coach. Assistants Believeau and Cagnasolla, who have been coaches for 14 years, handle the throws and hurdles, respectively. Mr. Valentine, the Cross Country coach, is the team’s distance coach and has coached for 19 years. 102 ABOVE:Joe Smith concentrating on his throw. BELOW: David Acevedo jumping the hurdle. 104 Hard Work Pays Off! The Tigerette Track Team was in its 11th season and faced an old familiar problem. The squad was very small finishing with about a dozen girls. The Tigerettes did have quality with Senior co-captains Lynn Puchalski and Kim Blackmon leading the way. Puchalski, who has won several state titles and was runnerup in the Morris County state sectional 1500 last year, is the school record holder in the javelin 800, mile and 2-mile. Blackmon was the team's high jumper and 400-meter runner. Junior shot putters Laura Wagnecz and Monica Lawrence give the Tigerettes strength in the throwing events. The Tigerettes will be strong again in the distances with Freshman Carolyn Malloy and Juniors Karen Chaparro and Sue Lowe helping. Freshman Kathy Maguire will be the team's hurdler. Sophomore Karen Lane, Junior Mildred Nieves and Freshman Madeline Patino are the sprinters. The Tigerettes were looking to do well in the Saturday relays and invitationals. The season opened with the Kearny Relays in early April and concluded with the State Meet of Champions in June. Coach Valentine, the team's head coach, is in his 11th season and divides coaching duties by areas with the boy's coaches. 107 Standing: Javier Rodriquez, John Velasquez, Ted Pallis, Brian Bellows. Never will these memories fade from your existence. May you go forward from a position of the strength of your solid foundation developed here at Dover to face the new and ever-changing challenges of training and work in your future occupation. Congratulations and best wishes to you! J. A. Middleton, III Principal VICE PRINCIPAL Graduation from high school is not an end, but a beginning for that which is to come. Tiger 1982 Colophon The Tiger 1982 yearbook is filled with many, many hours of hard work, long days in the new yearbook office, and many worried sleepless nights. It is a book filled with memories of just one of our high school years. I hope it will fill your heart with memories as it does mine. Together Mrs. Reiners and I have worked hard in attempting to make this yearbook better than ever. Working closely with our representative Mr. Richard Hempel we have tried to bring about a change in this year’s book. Using the seasons as our theme we were able to take a different approach from the traditional format and to separate the book into fall, winter, spring, and summer. This year my continuous work on the yearbook has been an involving experience. All the time and effort I put into it was definitely worthwhile. There are many people without whom this book would never be . . . Karen Collins who listened to me complain and contributed her time with her underclassmen section .. . Olga Rivera and Maria Rodriguez who typed their fingers off ... Tony Bishop, Mr. Rampone, and the photography staff for the many wonderful pictures taken . . . Mr. Richard Hempel for all the time spent instructing us on production . . . and the entire yearbook staff who contributed their ideas and time. Most of all I would like to thank Mr. Tim Frederiks and Mrs. Linda Reiners for all their support in the production of this book. I thank Mr. Frederiks, our business advisor, for his generosity and patience resulting in the creation of a yearbook office”, for the many hours working on boosters, and for keeping our financial matters under control. To Mrs. Reiners . . . Many, many, many thanks for all your support, guidance, and for giving me the opportunity to express my ideas and for the fine memories I hold in my heart of my last year of high school. Finally, I would like to thank the faculty and the student body for their cooperation, patience, and support. Nancy Nicholas Editor-in-chief The 700 copies of the 9X12 1982 Tiger were published by Dover High School's Yearbook staff and printed by Taylor Publishing Company, of Dallas, Texas. Mr. Richard Hempel was the company’s representative. The 184 page book is made up of 80 pound enamel paper with smyth binding. The sailcloth cover is printed in navy blue ink. End sheets are vivi-text white. Type faces used were Garamond, Brush, Maximus, Shotgun and Ronda. All portraits were taken by Lorstan Thomas Studios in Union, New Jersey. Mrs. Susan Buttros was the company representative. All candids were taken with Kodak film. Tony Bishop contributed the cover photo. The division page photographs were taken by Tony Biship (fall and winter), Mr. Arch Nicholas and Mr. Carl Reiners respectively. 184
