Dover High School Dover, New Jersey “The Year of the Tiger” Speak your truth quietly and clearly and listen to others .. . Introduction Four years ago, we of the Class of 1971 entered the ninth grade at the old Junior High to embark on that great adventure known as High School. We came with hopes of success, happiness, and peace. These four years have been most hectic years both for us and for the world. America has know n the agony of the longest w ar in its history and of turmoil in the streets, political campaigns, and colleges of the nation. America has also known the joy of unprecedented prosperity and of one of man’s great achievements in a walk on the moon. Meanwhile, our class was receiving an education to make us more know ledgeable; more aware of the world around us. A new awareness of man's relationship to himself and to Nature has grown during the past few years. We, as the next generation of leaders, must create a world where mankind can live at peace with himself and with his environment. Education will be instrumental in assisting this process. We of the 1971 Tiger staff have tried to document this New Awareness at Dover. A New Awareness along with faith, hope, and action can help construct a life of peace and contentment for all men. 4 Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans .... And whether it is clear or not, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should . . . You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars . . . 10 With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world . . . Therefore be at peace Be careful. Strive to be happy. The preceding quotations were taken from Desiderata found in Old Saint Paul s Church. Baltimore: dated 1692 When a person hears the word school, he usually thinks of an imposing brick building with long halls, lockers, and a huge parking lot. Unfortunately, he usually overlooks the most important facet of the student’s educational experience. This is the faculty and administration; a student will learn little or nothing in the best school building in the world if there is no experienced and understanding person to guide him. With sound minds, good educational backgrounds, and hearts full of dedication, the staff of Dover High School arrive each day to execute their prospective occupations of spreading knowledge. Each is striving to teach to the best of his ability, rendering a service to both the community and the students themselves. They not only perform their duties of teaching with excellent results, but extend themselves for many extracurricular activities such as advisors of clubs, coaches of interscholastic and intramural sports teams, and chaperones at school activities. In this day and age of conflicting views and the generation gap, we at Dover High can be proud to say that our faculty-student gap is closed. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” is an old and often quoted saying. Dover High realizes this and makes a conscious effort to include more than classroom work in its educational program. There is a wide range of clubs and activities which cover interests from sports to electronics to reading and writing. Each activity, in its own way, contributes something to the school. It may be a tangible product such as the school newspaper, a contribution to charity, the literary magazine, or help given in the office or with audio-visual aids. On the other hand, it could be something that cannot be touched, but that can be seen and heard in the school spirit shown at pep rallies and at sports events. Every student is free to select the clubs and activities in which he wishes to participate. These provide a chance to meet and relate to others who share a common interest, be it in a language, math, school spirit, writing, or service to others in the school or community. They help to round the individual and make his total school experience a happy and productive one. u A ACTIVITIES - All the world doth practise stage-playing. — Montaigne “How To Succeed . .. ” The “Frump Way” certainly wasn't the “Company Way” on December 4th and 5th when Dover High School presented How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The two act production concentrated on the efforts of a man named Finch (Todd Benson) who was trying to climb the ladder of success by reading a book entitled “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” In his uphill struggle Finch was hampered by the boss’s nephew. Bud Frump (Joe Pellington), who shared Finch's desire for power and success. A pretty secretary named Rosemary Pilkington (Kathy Waters) came to Finch s aid. however, and quietly helped him achieve his goal. Needless to say. Rosemary eventually became Mrs. Finch. Other important characters were: Mr. Bratt (Loren Taylor), Smitty (Donna Lis). Hedy LaRue (Marianne Norris), Wally Womper (Randy Russo). Mr. Gatch (Martin Ginsberg), J B. Biggley (Gary Yurko), Miss Jones (Dona Brown), Mr. Oving-ton (Luc Jacobs), and Miss Krumholtz (Linda Pristera). The play would not have been such a tremendous success without the combined efforts of Mr. Ed Daniels, director; Mr. John Evans and Mr. Roland Raham. musical directors; Mr. Daniel Krzywicki, set designer; and the entire stage crew and band. It is obvious that the coaches, players, and managers of the various Dover sports teams have spent long hours at practice in perfecting their sport. The results show in one of the most outstanding years in Dover sports history. Our winning ways began in the fall with the Iron Area Conference championships in football and cross-country. The football team enjoyed its first undefeated season since 1953. The winter sports came through with more championships; the indoor track team took two state championships, the cagers won the Morris County Basketball Tournament and the wrestling team earned I.A.C., County and District XIV laurels. The spring sports, baseball, track, golf, and tennis continued the pace and completed successful seasons. Through these sports the school pryvides for the development of the physical fitness and competitive spirit, so necessary to the growing process of the students. •. l l V v SPORTS Mm 0 m.i f •. ,fri i ! Did they have any desire and pride? Could they beat a team that astounded many with an upset the year before? Sixty minutes after the kick-off Dover was the victor 26-6. They were on their way! •. i. - ' 5S jv Roxbury Last year's Conference and County Champs set out to test the Dover Tigers and possibly disillusion them Dover swung its offensive machine and defensive prowess into action. Call it power, hustle. or desire. Roxbury could not derail their locomotive-like power. Dover won 20-14 The game was labeled a conquest. New Just as Dover was beginning to take the spot light among Morris County teams, Newton challenged the Tigers newly found reputation The Football 1970 —“The Year Of TheTiger” West Morris Always a threat. West Morris tried valiantly to crush this Tiger power. Dover was determined to prove this newly found joy called victory The Tigers played like true champions until the final whistle when the scoreboard read Dover 38-West Morris 6. Randolph An undefeated Dover team traveled to undefeated Randolph and proved that the Tigers deserved the attention of more and more people A fast moving offense teamed with a stellar defensive showing toppled the Rams 18-7 The Dover High School football team of 1970 was labeled the smallest in DI1S history It was said that they would not rank anywhere in the local standings. What no one knew was that there was a feeling among the team that was unlike any before them The 1970 team was the closest team ever They sweat together, ran. crawled, cheered, laughed, and complained together The twenty-one seniors on the team had gone through four years of a great relationship When it came time to perform, size became secondary to desire and pride The amazing effort of this team was more than just coaching Dover saw the word team in its truest sense. The saying of this year was that 1970 would be the Year of the Tiger A team working towards the same goals made it so Conference. County, and State championships were the work of a championship team We will miss the 21 seniors of this year's team There were great standouts who created greater happenings, but they must pass Dover has seen a team come and go They will soon be forgotten, but at least they know that they made it The Year of the Tiger” ton Orange and Black power advanced its mark to 5-0 by humiliating the Braves 14-0 The Tigers were climbing their ladder Morris Knolls A win at this point would assure Dover of a Conference title The Tigers controlled the entire operation Fine aggressive pressure by a keyed up defense provided a base from which Dover could attack with its striking offense The battle was tough but Dover was not to be denied this championship. They defeated Knolls 20-8. ! „■ « Morris Catholic The meeting with Morris Catholic proved one thing to the Tigers. A true champion is one who can overcome adversity and go on to win. In what might have been termed a slump, the Dover Tigers clawed at a threatening Crusader team The offense scored the points, but had it not been for some excellent performance by the famed Dover defense. Dover would have not won 27-25 Delbarton In probably the best match all year the Dover Tiger s offense ground out another fine showing and the mobile defense stopped a potent Delbarton offense to win 14-13. With an 8-0 record Dover had pretty much shown everyone that they were the number one team. They had come a long way. They had farther to go. Morristown The traditional Morristown game on Thanksgiving morning brought a large crowd. They had come to see two evenly matched team clash and perhaps see Dover lose. Going 8-0 marked only half a season to the team when they had to go 9-0 That last game was as all important as that first one The Dover Tigers persevered and pulled out their elements of hustle and desire that they had used all season. 40-6 does not do justice to the way those Tigers played. They had done it! You may kick truth about all day, like a football. Despite the bitter cold, several hundred Dover fans, along with the cheerleaders, twirl-ers. drill team and band, turned out to show their support for their favorite football team. Paced by unbeaten Rich Wong and Ray Sarinelli. the team has accomplished the first undefeated season in Dover wrestling history. In winning the championship in the District XIV tournament for the second straight year, the grapplers amassed 87 points to second-place Randolph s 65. Their only frustration, if it can be called that, was their close second finish to Pe-quannock in the Dover Holiday tournament The score was 61-58. However, even in this mild setback. Rich Wong. Ray Sarinelli. and Dave Ku-bert grabbed first-place honors in the 130. 141, 168 pound weight classes respectively. There were many individual honors for the wrestlers as well. At 130 lbs Rich Wong pinned State Champion Renard Haskins of Morristown twice. Schappell won the District XI title at 106 lbs by pinning all three of his opponents The District and Regional champs were: Rich Wong. Ray Sarinelli. and Dave Kubert. Adding to Sari-nelli’s list of achievements was his state championship at 141 pounds. This long awaited victory topped the wrestling season for the team Senior Wrestlers 90 He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves and sharpens our skill . -Edward Burke Rich Wong — 130 lbs. The Year of the Tiger” held true for the hall-running Tigers who annexed the Group I-11 distance medley title and Todd Benson, who added the Group l-II mile championship to the two outdoor crowns he had captured. Benson, a senior, was clocked in 4:23 as he won the group championship. Earlier he had joined with John Cenicola, Bob Ben-tlyewski and co-captain, Carl Panetta for the relay title in 10:56. Panetta was co-captain of the team with Luc Jacobs, the Belgian exchange student. Jacobs did well enough to qualify for the semi-finals in the 60 vd dash at the state meet. The Freshman year seems to be a year of orientation to the new environment of high school. The student must learn to adjust to the greater freedom of high school, a freedom which also brings a greater responsibility. The Sophomore and Junior years are years of growth and expansion as students mature in all areas. These years are not w ithout their setbacks but the experiences gained from them can be chalked up to preparation, not only for the Senior year but for life after high school as well. This idea was best summed up by Nanette Lambert. ... While going to Dover High School. I find myself changing throughout the months. It is a time to start an endless growth. Dover High serves a good purpose in that I have an opportunity to meet people who have altogether different ideas and ways. The small world of Dover High School does not always have a pleasant atmosphere. Nevertheless, it is allowing me to form opinions and to learn about the subjects of life with an open mind. They were merely an episode in my life; an episode that has taught me a great deal. I was given four years to play with back when I was thirteen. It was up to me to mold them into something creative. Those four years marked an important turning point. They determined w hat 1 would do for the rest of my life. I've made many friends and many enemies, learned much and learned nothing, followed the rules and broken many, had much fun and missed some too. High school gave me the chance to do whatever I wanted Sure it was hard work, but what in life really isn't when you come right down to it. I wish I could have it to do over again. ” is the big cry at graduation time. It’s too late now. You ask what impression high school left on me. What impression does life leave on you? You ask again, what did I get out of high school? Exactly what I put into it. Jeff Stickle Jorge J. Acosta Errie Agront Stephen Airola Pamela Adler Maureen Ahlers Jorge J. Weisbach Joan White 160 Sarah White Bruce Wieboldt Nothing to eat but food. Benjamin Franklin H. M. My travels are etched in my mind. During the past summer, a Dover High student had an opportunity to spend two months in Costa Rica under the exchange program sponsored by the American Field Service. We asked Michael Cannon to w rite about the impressions of his stay. I was an American Field Service exchange student to Costa Rica. Contrary to popular belief. Costa Rica is a predominately middle-class nation rather than a poverty-stricken country. I lived with the family of Don Milton Esquivel in the third largest city. Heredia My family” consisted of an older brother. Milton, two younger sisters, Clarissa and Lucia, and a younger brother. Alejandro. It was the rainy season while I was there and out of my 69 day stay, it rained 67 days. The people are very friendly and they love Americans. I went to a public school in the morning from 7: A M. to 12:00 noon. After school we had our main meal of the day. It usually consisted of rice and beans, fish or meat, and always tortillas and coffee. After a few weeks there, I didn’t feel like an American; I was a Costa Rican. I lived there, not on vacation, and became part of a family. It was an experience that has taught me much about the lifestyle of Latin America and one that I shall never forget. M Mike Cannon American Abroad Exchange Student To Costa Rica 162 Friendship is eternal; yet seas are between us. — Lindy Ronde When I begin lo write about my stay in Dover, my mind is in a complete disorder. A great number of little ideas are passing before my eyes. When I first heard that I had been chosen as an American Field Service student and would make my home with the Jonathan Thwaites family of Dover, N.J.. I was very pleased. I considered it a great opportunity to be able to live and study in the United States. After leaving my family, friends, and home in Kalmthout, Belgium, I wondered what the next twelve months would bring My apprehension of what was to come quickly vanished when I met my new family after an orientation session at Hofstra University. I immediagely felt at home with my new mother and father, brother. Cleave, and four sisters, Janet, Jean. Laura, and Sarah. The idea that keeps coming back in my mind, that I consider as the most important I learned is that although customs may be different, people are essentially the same throughout the world. This idea has always occurred to me in the many contacts with people of different ages, social classes, and opinions. I can’t tell yet what influence this stay of one year in the United States will have on me, but I know that when I am back in Belgium, I'll think many times about your country, and as time goes on I'll realize more and more what this great experience has taught me. Luc Jacobs 1970-71 Exchange Student From Belgium 163 And we danced and we laughed. Junior Prom 1970 NYL Tuxedos, gowns, and flowers were all in order on Saturday night. May 16th, w hen Dover High held its junior prom at the Holiday Inn in Ledgewood. “A Time for Us.” the theme song of the motion picture Romeo and Juliet, was the theme of Dover s formal affair which lasted from 8 to 12 p.m. Approximately forty-three couples danced to the music supplied by “The Landmark.” The highlight of the evening was the crowning of this year’s king, Mark Has-eltine, and queen. Dona Brown. The four finalists for king were: Mark Haseltine, Louis Cobo, Dave Sgalia. and Ray Sari-nelli. Pam Adler, Michele Gordon, and Elaine Lori were the three runners up for queen. Red roses were presented to the queen by Jerry Ketcham, junior class president. Mrs. Robert Becker, wife of the assistant principal. Mrs. Arnold Tverskv, wife of the assistant superintendent, and Mrs. Carmen Rossi, wife of the junior class advisor, chose the king and queen. Prom King Mark Haseltine and April Jennings Pam Adler. Prom Queen Dona Brown. Michele Cordon. Elaine Lori, and Dave Sgalia And dance ye with Christmas spirit! Deborah Horowitz Christmas Dance On December 19th the cafeteria swayed with gentle music and laughter. The reason? That was the evening of the annual Christmas Dance. The dance was semi-formal which meant short gowns for the girls and jackets and ties for the boys. Live music was supplied by The Strange Brew. A total of 60 couples attended the once a year affair. 165 One who is not wise himself cannot be well advised. — Machiavelli Senior Class Officers Jerry Ketcham. President. Mary Payton. Vice-President; Pam Adler. Secretary; Bonnie Beacham. Treasurer; Mr Rossi — Advisor. Senior Class Advisory Board The Senior Advisory Board is a group of teachers and administrators who give aid to the Senior Class in the planning and execution of the many activities and ceremonies such as graduation, preparation of the yearbook, the class trip, and the senior prom. The members of the Board are Mr. John A. Middleton. Ill, Mr. Robert Verseput, Miss Helen Hillenbrand, Mr. Carmine Rossi, Mr Robert Dobson, and Mrs. Betty Inglis. We of the Class of 1971 would like to extend our thanks to the members of the Senior Advisory Board for their many hours of counsel and assistance. Without their valuable aid, it would certainly be impossible to carry out the many programs in which the students of Dover High School participate. Seated: Mrs. Betty Inglis, Mr Carmine Rossi, Miss Helen Hilenbrand Standing: Mr. Robert Dobson, Mr Robert Sutton, Mr John A. Middleton, III. Mr. Robert Verseput. Time has taken a friend, but left an eternal memory ... — h. k. In Memoriam JoAnn Poburski 1953—1968 Sherry Hinkley 1953— 1968 James Lounsbury 1953— 1969 Dr. Arnold Sgalia 1919—1971 There Is No Death There is a plan far greater than the plan you know; There is a landscape broader than the one you see. There is a haven where storm tossed souls may go — You call it death — we immortality. You call it death — this seeming endless sleep; We call it birth — the soul at last set free. Tis hampered not by time or space — you weep. Why weep at death? Tis immortality. Farewell, dear voyageur — twill not be long. Your work is done — now may peace rest with thee. Your kindly thoughts and deeds — they will live on. This is not death — 'tis immortality. Farewell, dear voyageur — the river winds and turns; The cadence of your song wafts near to me. And now you know the thing that all men learn: There is no death — there's immortality. The amount received from sales of the yearbook came to almost five thousand dollars. This left a five thousand dollar difference which had to be made up for in the advertising section. It is therefore quite obvious, that although it is placed last, the advertising section must rank as one of the most important sections in the entire book. Without the support of our advertisers, parent patrons, and boosters, the yearbook would not be able to publish or would be severely limited in size, scope and the features which it is able to supply. We of the 1971 Tiger staff would like to express our thanks and appreciation for the support of the individuals and businesses who purchased space in this section. We would also like to thank Mr. Harry DeLorenzo, Business Advisor, for his counsel in the preparation of the yearbook and the hard-working advertising staff, headed by Business Editor, Todd Benson, for their contributions in soliciting the advertisements in this section. -VSTT v vV - ;• BENSON and BOSTROM COMPANY World's Largest Transmission Specialists Route 46 Roofing Sheet Metal Work Best Wishes to the Class of '71 DOVER BUSINESS COLLEGE 15 E Blackwell St Dover. Special thanks must also be given to Jim St. Angelo, David Berry, Morris County's Daily Record and the Daily Advance, for helping us locate many important pictures.
