Resume Over the past years Dover High School has ranked as outstanding competition in the field of athletics. Both boys and girls have represented the orange and black in triumphant efforts. This school year is no exception to the precedent, with the participating students doing their utmost to bring honors of sportsmanlike calibre to our coaches, student body, and administration. In chronological order a quick review will renew added confidence in a successful year. The Varsity Football Tigers met tough opponents in 1958 and considerably speaking, they fared well in the hard contests. A spectacular culmination to a gratifying season was the defeat of Morristown High School. Jack Wackwitz and Ray Essig of the Junior class were our superior cross country runners. Several worthwhile defeats were notched against other schools in duel meets along with a decent position in the Morris County Championships. Coming indoors on the hardwood gymnasium fkx)rs we were greeted by basketball season. Although only three seniors were active on the varsity squad, the class of 1959 can still be proud to nave this team represent them. Dover finished fourth in the Lakeland Conference after a rough string of games. The screams and cheers emerging after various take-downs and pins on the mat introduced wrestling. Ed Scharer, Dom Sarinclli. and John Brennan were the constant backbone of the team successes. Dover gained state honors through the victorious efforts of the trio just mentioned. As the students spent a relaxing 1958 Easter vacation, the track cinders were firmly rolled. Representation in all thirteen events gave Dover a fine seasonal record. The fabulous hurdle victories of Leon Pras were nationally acclaimed. On the baseball diamond, we were intrigued to watch the varsity nine in action. Hitting and fielding dexterity proved overpowering for !x tter than half of the rivals. Hitting averages well into the three hundreds were maintained by a select few. The Girls’ Athletic Association was strengthened by the addition of ambitious freshmen in September. Field hockey drew many participants. Indoor basketball and volleyball were sparked by weekly afternoon practices that l e-came noticed in the playday victories. The senior activity of fencing was new this year and attracted a number of brave and inexperienced females. Softball season is perennially popular which accounts for the proficiency attained in ball handling bv the fairer sex. As enthusiastic school support of all our teams is the key to an athletic year of passing grades. “Ye Ed.”
