SPIRITED... 2 With school starting up again, people had different attitudes toward school. Some were up to their usual antics of trying to look busy in study hall and classes, while others were reunited with their friends and took to sitting on the hallway benches. Others busied themselves with the new computers, and many ventured into the world of business. 5 INVOLVED 6 Students at D.H.S. were involved in a large number of activities this year. A popular activity in the fall was for students to decorate their halls for football games. Some were into sports and computers, while others were interested in cooking. Clubs were busy having parties and selling candy for money-making projects. A i VERY FRIENDLY This year at D.H.S. many old friendships were rekindled and many new ones sprung up. In addition, there were the usual “special” friendships. Whether these friends were casual or really close, the supported each other, talked, and had lots of fun throughout the year. 9 vu w y • i QV£I 3, I ■ la.one If the n nHrMs djBie jyeai, our mility footbaJI team continlH the willing traditVn by making it four in mow over ttytxjysfrom Phila. “OPEN?” REGISTRATION Each spring the underclassmen of DHS undertake the nearly impossible task of manuvering their schedule through the maze of registration. Students race from table to table trying to get in before the dreaded “CLOSED CLASS sign is displayed for one of their courses. First there’s Station A, then Checkpoint Charlie, student numbers. Station D-l D-2, two copies of everything, ... ; is there no end! But in spite of all this chaos, every year we all seem to get the classes we want, even if it's not when we want them. 12 13 “Dover’s ri Weekend in New England Opposite page left corner: the 1982 Homecoming Queen Holly Kandel and her court, Lori Duscnberry and Jane Karl. The band R.P.M. played at the annual event sponsored by Student Council. 15 This year’s Sweater Hop was a big success. The band Krystal supplied the music, but everyone else supplied the fun. The theme for the “hop” was In the Heartland, and wasn't it appropriate! At right: Scott McCartney and Joel Hamsher show off their dates. Opposite page top: Becky and Scott, they really know how to boogie. Opposite page right: Julie Smith and her date sit this one out. Regina, Holly, and Pam dance a slow dance with their dates. As the evening wore on, people danced the night away (top right). Holly, Gary, Pam, and Mike were no exception. 18 19 The junior class presented us all with “Spanish Nights, the theme of this year’s prom. This year’s added attractions included a brick walkway, leafy palms, and a fountain that really worked. Top right, people eagerly enter the gym for a night of dancing. Bottom right, Scott and his date share a very special dance. 20 21 Prom Night: Tailored Shined Top left: Becky and Kyle and Dave and Leslie — the same old dull routine (but they love every minute of it!). But behind the glamour and prestige of being a senior is another side of senior life. Only past graduates know what must go on during the last year of high school. These include getting a senior picture taken and getting them all handed out, filling out ACT and SAT forms before the deadline, taking the ACT and SAT, ordering announcements, taking as many college prep courses as possible, visiting colleges, asking Mrs. Celcc for copies of high school transcripts, applying for scholarships, making sure you have enough credits to graduate, ordering your cap and gown, begging your teachers for recommendations, passing your classes, digging out lost library books, paying back fines, ordering your yearbook, ordering senior hat. battling against sen-ioritice, looking for a summer job, addressing graduation announcements, and practicing for commencement. The sophomores and juniors better enjoy the time before they become a Dover High School Senior. CHAMPS — ONCE AGAIN! The expectations of the Dover Tornadoes for the 1982 season were very high. The team started out with victories over Columbus South and St. Thomas Aquinas. But then a two-week stretch hurt the team, and a one point loss to rival Claymont and a five-point loss to undefeated Steubenville seemed to spell disaster. Although the Tornadoes continued to struggle, a one-point loss to Wooster seemed to put hopes for a fourth straight conference championship on the shelf. The true Tornado spirit came to the surface against Mansfield Madison, and who can forget the last-second victory over North Canton! But the icing on the cake came when Dover dominated New Phila for the 4th time in a row in the local classic. This victory and a Wooster loss gave the Tornadoes their 4th straight cardinal championship. Each of the twelve members did a great job and put forth their best efforts. One of Coach Tom Bower's goals next year is to get enough girls to participate in a girls' cross country team. Steve McCartney, Phil Gordon, and Eric Foltz — dotted the whirlwind roster, at least a trio of Freshmen started every match and there was great difficulty in even filling the upper weights. With more experience coming back then has been the case for two years, better times are expected. Gordon and McCartney were four year lettermen and co-captains. Mac went undefeated, earned the Most Valuable Player award, and shared the Most Pins with cousin, Scott. Scott captured Most Improved laurels and was voted captain-elect for next year. Foltz was honored with the Coach’s Trophy for Greatest Individual Contribution. 79 LADY CAGERS This year’s team boasts the best record in several seasons, not to mention the first winning record in many years. Some of the highlights were an exciting last-second win over Coshocton and a close victory over Mansfield Madison. The team was also first place in the Cardinal Conference for much of the season, Sue Eichel lead the way with the most points (292) and the most rebounds (212). Traditions, both new and old. paved the way for a most successful Marching Season. The Marching Tornadoes were received with great enthusiasm by the crowds at their many performances, and rewarded with several standing ovations throughout the season. Band morale was “Sky High” entering concert season and the Winter Concert program was an exciting as the marching performances. In concert band competition, the Symphonic Band proved to be a “Superior” group by earning a superior rating at District Contest and again a Superior Rating in State Level Competition. A special highlight of the year for the band was their participation in the 1983 Blossom Festival Parade in Niagara Falls. Ontario, Canada, which proved to be a very educational and enjoyable experience. The directors worked especially hard and it really paid off. Across the page. Mr. Gillaspie. Jan Neiger won the Ohio High School Philosophy Contest this year on the subject of the Nuclear Arms Race. Jan was one of many seniors who took Advanced Government Seminar, and he was the first medalist since 1969 to win anything on this scale in Social Studies. Scott Kellicker and Phil Gordon each won Board of Regents academic scholarships of $ 1,000 a year for four years. Scott also won a University of Cincinnati honor scholarship. Other winners were Bobbi Jo Feutz, Muskingum College honor scholarship and the Thomas Armstrong Scholarship; Steve Moser, University of Akron scholarship; Lisa Schwartz and Karen Mizer, Caputo Scholarships; Lew Clark, Bryce Browning award; Jane Karl, Future Teachers scholarship; and Charlene McHenry, Dover Jaycee Charity, Inc. scholarship. Unfortunately, we were unable to mention many other winners. Our two exchange students, Steve and Chris, are pictured above. Steve left sunny Costa Rica and Chris left her home in Brazil to visit us here in Dover. They breezed into our lives and made friends with us all. 155 Spring Break: Fun in the Sun The Bahamas beckoned biology students again! Top, left, Tracy Judy tries snorkling. The journey proved to be enjoyable for all and a bit painful for a few who seemed to spend more time on their rears than on their skis. We'll mention no names though, O K. Melanie Malcuit, Becky Zifer, and Renee Milyori? In the lower right. Lourie Schartiger poses before she tackles the mountain. And below, we see the bright and cheery faces of Renee Milyori, Kathy Seni, Steph Deeds, and Becky Zifer who are obviously not ready to tackle anything. 158 Thespians — The Show Stoppers This year the Thespians kept up their long standing tradition of producing enjoyable and entertaining plays. Mrs. Rini became the new director, and from the results of the successfulness of the plays she directed, it can easily be seen that she did a great job! Many long hours of hard work are spent at rehearsals to make sure that everything goes just right when the opening night arrives. When the night finally arrives, the cast is at the school hours before the curtain opens for their make-up and hair to be done. After the play is over, many good friends and memories have been gained for a lifetime. Reading and Writing is Their Game! Pictured above. Fortunately, no one was “seriously” injured and the brave students returned to the lab and successfully completed the experiment. As technology moves forward in the business community, the DHS Business Department strives to update its equipment and courses to continue to offer relevant education. Therefore, two Commodore Computers, primarily for word processing, were added to the department this year. These are used in Office Machines and Typing II, but other business classes have been aware of their presence. The Rosalia Greco Caputo Memorial Scholarship was presented this year to Karen Mizer and Lisa Schwartz. Established this year by Dr. Frank Caputo, a former social studies teacher at Dover High School, and his daughter, Bonita, this will be an annual award to a Dover business student who plans to major in business in college.
