We’ve got the spirit! D.H.S. students kept a smile on their faces during the year. Of course they had their reasons. The year started out with a successful cross country and football season. The band also added excitement during the fall. Even routine classes, such as biology and drafting, let our minds be occupied throughout the year. Spirit, however, was kept on the track by the Seniors who anxiously awaited May 21, 1982. Compliments of Troup Pluto Studios 3145 West Tuscarawas Street Canton. Ohio 44708 2 DHS Spirit — 1982 Style This year’s senior class constructed a spirit pyramid as a way of showing our school and team support. The strong foundation was built on our great football season. The mighty team had an outstanding year and went on to beat Phila and be C.C. Champs! The second level was strengthened by our support of the guys and gals basketball squads and the wrestling and tennis teams during the long winter months. The year was topped off by the exciting track, baseball, and tennis seasons that came with the first signs of spring. We hope that the oncoming seniors will show the same DHS spirit as the Seniors of '82. DHS Noisemakers This year the Dover Varsity Cheerleaders went to Kenyon College for Cheerleading Camp. They received top honors and first place out of twenty other squads from Ohio. The cheerleaders did a great job promoting spirit throughout the student body. Compliments of Josten s Class Rings. Tuesday and Wednesday were Stomp 'em and punk-out days. Thursday was our traditional ‘‘Mourn Phila day when everyone wore their black attire and several visited the cemetary. On Friday. D.H.S. students were all DECKED OUT in their Red Gray colors for our Kiss a Tornado day. The week was full of fun and good times and was topped off with a perfect D.H.S. victory over New Phila! 8 D.H.S. CHEERLEADERS ... Ohio 44622 Homecoming 1981 | Homecoming is one of the most exciting events during the year. It begins with nominations for the queen out of all the girls in the senior class. It is narrowed down to ten girls, then to the three finalists. During the week, suspense fills the air until the night of the game when the queen is finally crowned. This year the Homecoming Dance, sponsored by the Student Council, took place at Park School. The theme was Fantastic Voyage. The gym was decorated to give a feeling of being on board a pirate ship. Everyone enjoyed the evening that ended way too soon. 12 Speaking of Spirit — Back the Guys! Top — Row 1: Cmdy Trachsel. Audra Thompson. Shari Maurer. Sue Rini. Diana Richard. Kathy Peters. Nobody qualified for the state championship for the first time in 12 years, and there was very little else to soothe the wounds of an agonizing 7-11-0 season. However, senior standouts, Todd Handrich and Terry Young, led an inexperienced contingent of grapplers through a most frustrating campaign. There were only 6 winning records! Handrich captured the most valuable player award for overall contribution to the program and the coveted top dog trophy for the most pins during the regular season. Young earned both most improved player and takedown trophies while Scott McCartney garnered the coach's trophy for individual efforts this year. Handrich, Steve McCartney and Danny Green copped county championships. Handrich, Green and Young were conference titlists. Young was sectional champion and second in the district tournament. You cannot run a Rolls Royce on six cylinders. We should be in better shape as far as the lighter weights are concerned next year; however, we must locate some fearless bigger athletes somewhere if we hope to be competitive again and regain any of the dominance we once enjoyed in local wrestling circles. With 22 wins and only 10 loses the team tied as the second winnin-gest team at Dover (the 1974 team won 26). High points of the year had to be the 1st places in the Fall Futura at New Phila and the Fall Festival and the strong second place in the Dover Invitational. The Reserve Team reversed a losing trend and set a 12-8 mark. The fact that all the reserve golfers were either freshmen or sophomores indicates that some good years should be forthcoming for Dover Golf. Jim Lanza placed on the Interstate Golf League First Team and was named to the coaches AAA District Team. Barry White qualified on the Interstate Golf League Second Team. 79 D.H.S. Buckeye J.V.S. — School away from School Buckeye is fast becoming our second school. When juniors return from the summer break, they find many old friends missing at D.H.S. In fact, the school seems almost deserted at times. This year sixty-eight juniors joined seventy-eight seniors who were already at Buckeye to cut down on the crowd hanging around junior and senior halls. The missing ones were off to take a shortcut into the business world, for the most part. Of course, they still work on the same English and history requirements, but they spend much of their time in the nurseries, greenhouses. shops, stores, offices, restaurants, and other situations that give them some practical experience before facing the task of earning a living. Still some of the missing can be found at pep rallies, in the band, on the teams, and in the clubs. They are still a vital part of D.H.S. Some representative pictures follow. At right. Mr. Nixon and Mr. Swinderman teach how to deal with the REAL world in Economics and American Government. One of Mr. Nixons ways to prepare us for the REAL world is his sermonettes. WAGNER Death means leaving behind the winter of doubt and stepping into the song . . . the color. . . the fragrance of eternity . . . never again to be tired or hurt or old! In a race, everyone runs but only one person gets first prize. So run your race to win. To win the contest you must deny yourselves many things that would keep you from doing your best. An athlete goes to all this trouble just to win a blue ribbon or a silver cup. but we do it for a heavenly reward that never disappears. So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I fight to win. I'm not just shadowboxing or playing around. Like an athlete I punish my body, treating it roughly, training it to do what it should, not what it wants to. Otherwise I fear that after enlisting others for the race. I myself might be declared unfit. As for me. the hour has come for me to be sacrificed: the time is here for me to leave this life. I have done my best in the race. I have run the full distance, I have kept the faith. And now the prize of victory is waiting for me. the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge will give me on that Day. and not only to me, but to all those who wait with love for him to appear. from St. Paul 200
