In the morning, most of us climbed off busses or out of cars and hurried to our lockers, maybe stopping at the Attendance Office if we didn't quite manage to make it to school on time. Then, of course, it was off to class. During our free moments, many of us worked diligently in study hall, while others busied themselves in the library or Media Center. Welcome to DHS! 3 A Day Though classes ended at 2:50, the day wasn't over then for most of us. There was always something to get involved in, whether it was play practice, a football game, or cheering at a pep rally - Where even our teachers might decide to get into the act! 4 In the Life Below left, Leslie Barcus, 1979 Homecoming Queen, crowns Rachelle Muts-chelknaus, the 1980 Queen. First if you've taken Algebra 1 in 8th grade, you'll be happy to find out that if you score high enough on your placement test, you will be able to earn ' k or even 1 college credit in math. They've arranged an Advanced Calculus course worth up to 1 COLLEGE CREDIT. The school has also spent $3,900 on calculators to be used in the higher math courses. Thirty Tl-55's were purchased to be used in Algebra II lower classes, and thirty Tl-58's were purchased to be used in Algebra II and higher classes. In your future class choices you should seriously consider taking the math road; it will definitely pay off in college!) Still many students “sweated out” those writing classes, knowing that it would pay off when they moved to the universities and colleges. Some wrote letters in business English while others studied literature from Chancer to Hemingway. Television productions of plays and stories helped add interest and cut the cost of renting movies. In fact, television seems to be opening new frontiers for the future English student. 45 On This Day Thomas Henry John Marks Paul Mowrey Jim Nixon 46 In History .. . With only one senior leaving the squad, valuable experience should return in 1981. The reserve record indicates some potential for varsity improvement, especially when the fact that one-half of the squad is comprised of freshmen is considered. Compliments of: O’Brian's Restaurant in the Village Plaza 104 Sometimes a tornado — or was it a mere surface turbulence — beats itself to death on the surrounding hillsides before it can generate any real awesome fury. There may be storm warnings, watches, and even sighting without anything ever materializing except the omnipresent and pervading fear of disaster — real or imagined. Those who moved, those who quit, and those who chose not to pay the price pretty well summarize Dover's 1980-81 wrestling season. The injured, the inexperienced, and the faint of heart inadvertently added to a plethora of problems. Everything that could possibly go wrong did, and mere mediocrity seemed an unobtainable goal at one time early in the season. Long suffering arch-rivals found ample opportunity to vent their frustrations against Dover's dominance. Carrollton, Coshocton, Claymont and Marietta all put the Whirlwinds down, and even the boys across the river beat them 27-19 in their twentieth try. The tournament trail wasn't any kinder as the Crimson struggled to finish in the top four. County, Conference, and District laurels all passed them by. There were occasional flashes of old times — an 11-8-0 dual meet ledger to continue the never-a-los-ing-season streak, another invitational championship. and an overall victory for Coach Paul Mowery. 105 The highlight of the year had to be the rousing come-from-behind 30-24 win over rival Morgan to tie the national Dual Meet record of 37! Only seven maulers were winners. Burly Brian Burrell was impressive with his second straight undefeated season. Gary Grieson, Dan Newell, Steve McCartney, Mark Crow, and Dave Korns contributed more than 11 victories to the cause. First year senior starter, Mike Hawk, finished 6-5-1. Brian Burrell won M.V.P. honors for his overall contribution to the program and shared the Top Dog trophy for the most regular season falls with Griesen. Meweil was named most improved player, Korns captured coach's trophy for individual sacrifice, and McCartney was elected captain for the 1982 season. The team finished with a 14-6 record, the best in this school’s history. We defeated Perry, Jackson, and Zanesville this year, the first time ever! Jim Lanza and Barry White both qualified for the district tournament by winning sectional's upper bracket in doubles. Jim Lanza also broke the school record for the best individual season ever, — 18-2! Cal Hunter and Kyle Miller, Dover's 1 Doublesteam, also broke a record, winning 14 times to only 6 losses for an individual season. Senior Captain Dale Kreisher was named as the team’s most valuable player. Jim Lanza was awarded as the team's most improved player along with the most wins. Dominated by underclassmen, the team was led by the pitching of Robby Jones (Most Improved Player), the fielding of Jim Morris, and the dependability of Rick Zuercher (Most Valuable Player) — the only senior players. Juniors Butch Braglin and Jim McDougall shared this year’s batting crown, while the remaining baseballers hold promise for a bright future. Wendy is an example of the spirit in the Dover band. She possesses dedication, pride, and puts alot of effort into everything she does. Dedication is a must. Without dedication from each member, the Great Dover Band would be no longer great. Pride is essential. Without pride and support from the community, the band would not have confidence. Effort is required to put on an outstanding performance. The effort has to be made, or the show won’t go on. Top right is the marching band in all their 150 glory. Lower left is the band during an outstanding performance. Lower right shows Karen Keppler ( Lips”) concentrating on delivering another good show. After many years of hoping for new uniforms and a new band shell, their dream came true. In the summer of '80, the band shell was being constructed. Uniform fittings were being held at the school. Both of these big projects were financed by an anonymous doner. The band takes this opportunity to thank our anonymous friend for helping maintain our high standards. The band is truly grateful for such large, necessary gifts as a band shell and brand new uniforms. Another Year — Here we have our 1980-81 drum major. Both were well attended and enjoyed by our families, friends and neighbors. The choir also participated in a workshop with four other choirs, which was not only interesting and fun, but sometimes a little crazy! When Solo and Ensemble Contest rolled around in February, about twenty of our members summoned up the courage to compete, and we were very proud when most of them brought home Superior ratings. This year had one sad aspect — it was the last year that we’ll have the help of our Assistant Director, Miss Christine Baker. We’ll never forget her help when we just couldn’t learn those impossible harmonies, or when our music had to be checked off two days ago, but she played it for us anyway. Good luck, Miss Baker. The Future Business Associates’ major project this year was to earn money to visit I.B.M.'s Office Products Division and Quaker Square in Akron. Ohio. Through the sale of calendars, we were able to make the trip. For our service project, the group assisted a family at Christmas by providing them with a Christmas tree and toys from Santa. Other activities included: a picnic, Halloween party, a Christmas banquet, skating party, scavenger hunt and finger buffet. Learning that we enjoyed eating together, we concluded the year with a pizza party. 172 Fellowship of Christian Atheletes Row 1: Scott Heller. John Corsi. Jay Deeds. John Vesco. They sponsored many dances including the Homecoming, and a special dance with the group Spring Heeled Jack . Shown above receiving the trophy are Dale Kreisher, Michelle Hartz, Jim Pierson, Barry White and alternates (standing) Mike Dickens and Matt Cohen. OUR EXCHANGE STUDENT, Andrea Dorca from Brazil. Andrea breezed into our lives for the second semester and made everything seem a little brighter. She managed to forget her native Portuguese and speak a very good English for us with just a little accent. Here, she reviews some facts about Uber-landia, her home town, a town of some 300,000 people. No wonder she was a little lost here in Dover! We want to wish her the best back in Brazil. But in spite of all these obstacles, the valiant Swirl Staff managed to complete this utterly fascinating book through which you are now leafing and looking for pictures of yourself. We hope that the pictures at right will give you some idea of the fun, fuss and frustration that went into the 1981 Swirl. Just remember, DHS, we did it all for you! The official school photographer was Troup Pluto of Canton, and additional pictures were provided courtesy of The Times-Reporter and Mitchell Studios. Editors were Michelle Hartz and Vicky Zifer. 188 For You The 1981 Swirl Staff: Front row; Wendy Walker. Sara West. Co-editors Vicky Zifer and Michelle Hartz. Susan Cramer Row 2; Kenda White. That big desk in the principal’s office looked mighty empty on the last day of school. It had just been vacated by a man who had first filled it when the 1981 Seniors were in the first grade. Twelve years is a long time to walk the D.H.S. halls — to make sure the teachers are pushing math, science, and history, that the T.V.’s are focused right in Room 115, that the machines are humming in wood shop, that the basket balls are bouncing in the gym — all the little details that make up a principal's day. He will miss all that, but more, he will miss guiding, helping, pushing kids along in the right direction, or just kiding them along a little. A lot of kids, now adults, remember that guidance kindly. That’s a good tribute for Mr. Schrock to take with him. He made a good impression on a lot of lives. THANKS TO OUR PATRONS — Loerto R. Dacio.
