The Guid- ance and High School offices were extensively remodeledg each now enioys the luxuries of wall-to-wall carpet and refreshing new paint. The Attendance office was relocated, along with some of the Admin- istration. Double-pane, cold-resistant, heat-retaining windows spruced up the appearance of the Fifth Street wing, and a new bell system was installed. As a result, the clocks failed to work. But then, neither did the bells! Our beloved cafeteria, relieved of those long, anti-social tables, was equipped with intimate tables for four, some- times five, but usually more! The bulky partitions dividing the cafeteria and library disappeared, replaced with a new yellow wall and a door that was never locked!! d1dcJ5 WWE Refurbished locker rooms band shelters new seats on the visitors side a resurfaced track the repainted mighty Tornadoes sign and the installation of new glorious stadium lights completed the project at Cra ter Stadium. They're not showing anything in wrestling except reruns of the last three or four years. There's the MOW, Peanut and Dynamite Dean thrashing on people again! Is it 1977, 1978 or 1979 - maybe 1980? Who's the slick Black kid? ls it Mark or james? The HAMMER in the middle isn't the SAF or old jim Bob - they graduated. That long, lean and mean legman can't be SUDS and he's too blonde for P.T. lt's tough Todd Young so it must be 1979 or is it 1980? Strange how class seems to blend until it all looks the same! The Tornado Grapplers were awesome again this campaign - racking up their third unde- feated season in a row, running their dual match winning streak to forty-nine and generally mak- ing a shambles out of the competition along the tournament trail. The opposition stalled, they ran, they did everything except hide, but there was no escape. Nobody actually came close ex- cept the boys across the river - and they werer1't close enough as their finest team ever was nipped 20-27 in an exciting grand finale! lncomparable Chris Mowrey led the charge - as he always has - rewriting the record book as he went. Among his sundry accomplishments were a 108-8-2 career slate, unbeaten in dual meets at 57-0-2 and a school standard for any sport of nineteen medals including thirteen champion- ships. The two-time captain earned his second MVP for overall contribution to the wrestling program. Number three all-time wrestler, Dean Telle, was named the Most Improved. Iunior Brian Burrell won the coveted Top Dog Trophy for the most regular season pins and Dan Sweit- zer captured the Coach's Trophy for individual effort and sacrifices this year. Gary Petrullo, number six on the all time list, Iames Black and Burrell logged unbeaten dual meet records and received plaques along with Mowrey for that feat. Super sub Dave Korns, Burrell and fiesty Mark Crow were elected tri-captains for next year. 119 At top right: Mr. Mowery instructs Iames in some of the finer points of the sport. At Bottom: Go For It Iames!!! opposite page top left: Pea- nut puts the squeeze on his New Phila opponent. Opposite page bot- tom: Mark Crow puts the pressure on his opponent. Real Tornadoes! W Q The same athletes - as well as Young, Billy Gilmore and Gus Griesen - sparkled during the second or tournament campaign. Mowery, Telle and Black capped the outstanding effort by win- ning trips to State. Iames tied Scott Gondo's fourth place as Dover's best finish ever on a second trip to the BIG MEET - a remarkable feat, all factors considered. The Seniors - with 53 wins out of 54 tries, four invitational championships, two conference titles and two runnersup, four sectional and four district crowns and thirteen men to State - could be acknowledged as MOWERY'S MIGHT- IEST MAULERS of them all, but - The ZOO is through - finally beaten by Baccalaureate when nothing else could. The age old challenge remains - can those that follow top or even match the achievements of this season's great team? Is there enough per- serverence, dedication and willingness to work to create another-new but equally as effective - menagerie? The talent is there - but only time, circumstances and desire can fulfill its promise. 121 and Over ,cv 'Y 1979-so Volleyball CANTON HOOVER SOUTH CANTON INDIAN VALLEY NORTH IACKSON Steubenville CAMBRIDGE WEST HOLMES ST. The team's 9-10 record was the best since 1975. Dover finished third in the Cardi- nal Conference, the best finish ever by the boys' team. Another first this year was the Sectional championship that Dover won out- right over five other teams participating. The team was led by co-captain Andy Spies, who set a new school record at iil singles with a 13-6 record for the season. Andy, a senior, was also voted M.V.P. and had the most wins along with qualifying for the District championships. Also helping the Tor- nadoes at singles were co-captain Dale Krei- sher, a junior - first alternate at the Districts and voted Most Improved for the year and Senior Earl Clark - Coach's Award Winner. The doubles team of Cal Hunter and Barry White were one win short of best record, and they were sectional runners-up. Both qualified with Andy at the Districts. Other Varsity let- termen include Dale Woods, Iim Lanza, and Ron Smith. The Racquettes The Dover Cirls, Tennis team compiled the 'most wins ever in dual meets with a 14-7 record. The team was led by Senior Molly Miller with a re- markable 23-1 dual meet and 25-3 over-all mark. She was voted MVP for the third time. Kris Miller received the career award for 68 victories in her varsity career, a mark that Coach Schrader feels may never be broken. The D award for dedication, desire, and dleco- rum was shared by Molly Miller, Kris Miller, and Ann Davidson, an award voted by their teammates. The Dover girls were also Sectional Champions with Molly Miller, Kris Miller, Ann Davidson, Man- dy Spies, and Katies Spies, all qualifying for the Districts. Other players who earned varsity letters were Senior Lauren Hunter and Iuniors Lisa Clark and Vicki Luthy. E CAME DOWN FROM DOVER TOWN What has sun-kist skin, sand in its tenny-treads, and two pairs of ears fone pair unusually largej? A DHS Choir student just home from Disneyworld, of course! We departed for Florida on March 20th, endured pouring rain, frequent rest stops, and 23 hours of Dukes of Earl. After a brief and con- fusing stop at our hotel - Wet 'N' Wild! The next morning we made our debut at Sea World. Our second performance, Disneyworld, was scheduled late in the afternoon on the 23rdg our determination plus the Tomorrowland state com- bined to produce a superb presentation. The trip was funded through candy and bake sales, a paper drive, and topped off by a successful auction. The Choir Parents Organization was an invaluable source of support and assistance to our efforts. pr' ...M s-M-M-,,.....,,.,W,w 162 ibnn-all!-'-'naw qoruo, THAT 1s!5 , if Far left: a jubilant Mr. Heck poses with one of Sea World's many attractions. This year's Student Council earned the Ohio Association of Student Councils Honor Council Award for being an outstanding Ohio High School Council, based on leadership, community service, benefits to students, activities, and over- all effectiveness. Some of the things they did to earn this award included organizing the entire spirit week for school and community, honoring senior citizens with a breakfast and program, honoring coaches and teachers with special days. They had a special share-a-Christmas program. In addition to many other dances and programs, they concluded the year with special noon games for Seniors. It was a busy year! We held frequent meetings, and planned a variety of activities. On December 6, the New Phila NHS joined us on a field trip to Columbus where we toured COSI. the State Capitol and the French Market. The week before Christmas, we participated in an elementary classroom visitation where we read stories to the kids and passed out treats. Two days before Christmas, we donated clothes to the receiving home and to a needy family. During the basketball season, we worked at the concession stand to raise money for our fund. On the morning of March 17, the new members of NHS were tapped. At the expense of the group, the old members honored the new members at a luncheon at Espenschied's. The following evening, the new members were inducted in a classy ceremony. Mr. Sehrock was inducted as an honorary member. To raise money we held a bake sale, and it was a big success! Finally, on May 6, we took a field trip to Stan Hywett in Akron. Second year members: Row 1: Todd Mizer, Elaine Dalpiaz, Susan Ellwood, Eric Dessecker. Row 2: Becky Seng, Iennifer McCreery. Through our m t' ' o 1vat1on and the cooperation of the SWIRL staff this book contains man new f y eatures. We are proud of the fact that the seniors are featured in a color section that also contains most likely to . . . candids. We would like P ting up with our new ideas and unorthodox ways. If anyone was omitted ' ' to thank the student body for ut- ffl 4 J 1 C ?: Z , 1 , J '51 1 A i 1 9 in group pictures, or offended in any way, we are very sorry. With your help and cooperation, we were able to put together a beautiful book of memories that you will always cherish. Finally, we want everyone to know what a fantastic yearbook advisor that Mr. Iohnston is. He let us design the yearbook the way we wanted to, and gave us assistance when we needed it. No one can imagine all the headaches that he had because of us. If D.I-LS. did not have Mr. Iohnston for a yearbook advisor then D.I-LS. would not have a yearbook! We, the editors of the 1980 SWIRL, dedicate this book to Mr. Iohnston and the class of 1980. The Editors, Ieff Maurer Elaine Dalpiaz i- I 200 -V 4 ,i f -. ,- Y ,ff ,ff ' f'
