Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1978 volume:

1978—PUZZLING OR ? THE SHAPE WAS CONSTANTLY CHANGING We came back from summer vacation to a new time schedule which many late risers had a hard time adjusting to. New faces in different placed provided a change of scenery. Mr. Martin finally assigned some practical experiments to students foolish enough to sign up for Advanced Biology. (Just kidding, little Jasper.) Santa gave us a temporary lift out of the winter dulldrums. Some old traditions were broken while others were started. The spirit chain was a new idea which raked in the money and left some enthusiastic big spenders penniless. And the fireworks which took the place of the bonfire proved that changes can be for the better. GO DOVER beat PHILA 2 3 SEASONS PIECE TOGETHER TO FORM THE YEAR Days turn into weeks— Weeks blend into months— Months fade into years. Seeing the seasons changing-Changing with them— Like a big puzzle— Bits and pieces fit together. Learning- Loving— Sharing- Remembering. Holding thoughts and erasing doubts. From disillusion to enthusiasm— All a learning experience at DHS. YEARS PIECE TOGETHER TO FORM OUR LIVES THE PUZZLE GOT MORE COMPLICATED EACH YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL Sometimes high school seemed like a puzzle with 5000 pieces impossible to finish. That was when you had football practice, band and drama rehearsals, club meetings, and a research paper due. Your puzzle had turned into a maze. But how about when football season was over, the play all finished, and your club was in the black again, the puzzle became relatively simple and you found yourself looking ahead to next year when you’d have football practice, band and drama rehearsals.... 6 All the little bits and pieces of our experiences came together one at a time to form our high school lives. The first big thrill might have been when you made first string quarterback way back in Pee-Wee Football, or maybe when you made cheerleader, or class officer in 7th grade. No two people were alike. We took different classes, ran around in our own cliques, and took part in different activities. But no matter how different we all were, we all come together to be part of DHS. THE CRYSTAL BALL Speeches by the candidates on the theme of “how” a homecoming queen represented Dover High School transformed this year’s homecoming assembly into an entertaining event that set the tone for the day. During the pregame ceremonies, Stephanie Marazsky, escorted by Terry Burrell, was crowned homecoming queen by last year’s queen Debbie Dorn. Teri Petrullo, escorted by Cary Petrullo, and Valerie VonKaenel, escorted by Jack Polk, were attendants. Debbie was escorted by Chris Arthurs. The Tornadoes surprised the powerful Canton Hoover Vikings as they made this year’s game a challenge. Although the Tornadoes lost the game, it was a close one with the final score of 20-14. Everybody rocked at the “Crystal Ball” with Raven presiding at the traditional dance the following night. 10 RIVALS CONTRIBUTED TO THE PUZZLE The last few days before the Big Game were spent in Phila “borrowing” a few items to enhance the halls of DHS (as well as the bodies of some spirited young men). The lead-up to Friday night was the same as always except for one major change. Thursday night started with the annual kick-off dinner, followed by the snake dance which ended with a bang (ha, ha). The traditional bonfire was replaced with a wirewords display and Crater Stadium was filled with ooh’s and ah’s as the fireworks psyched up the crowd for the grand finale. Back-the-Guys really did their stuff as senior Frank Alesiano was well taken care of. His guardian angels thought the two would make a cute couple. By golly, those students really decked those halls with boughs of Beat Phila signs (courtesy of the New Phila Red-n-Black Pack, while others came from the front yards of many Phila football players). Phila rested in peace from the Junior’s Duck Heaven, to the Senior’s Duck Soup, all the way to Crater Stadium, where Dover proved its superior spirit by winning the spirit chain (way to go Sr. High). The Marching Tornadoes proved their excellent showmanship by sending BACK the clowns, and the rough-and-ready Dover Tornadoes made a hope a reality as they squished, squashed, and squooshed Roman’s Rookies. . 0 12 WE CAME: The emotions of the cheerleaders, students, and fans of all ages reached a high as nearly 7000 braved the cold for the annual renewal of the ancient rivalry. Senior players and bandsmen ran through pregame ceremonies for the last time. WE SAW: When the going got tough, the tough got going as 2nd-stringer quarterback Jeff Mamarella manned the offense due to Ted Eigner’s injury on a cheap shot early in the second quarter. WE CONQUERED: We conquered what was supposed to be the number 1 defense in the C.C. which proved to be no match for the Tornadoes as Kenny Rufener ran 70 yards for the winning touchdown, went over 1000 yards for the year, and was named the game’s MVP. The game finally came to an end, but the night was far from over as victory parties were celebrated all over town. 15 'J w - If a man does not keep pace with his companions. (Future Gamblers of America), the club meets regularly every once in a while, usually on Friday nights. The purpose of the club is two-fold. Firstly, to weasel as much money as possible out of each other, and secondly to promote the delinquency of minors, with special emphasis on poker, cigars, and wild women (see picture to right). Membership is based on race, color, and religion (or lack of it) and above all, poker playing ability. To become a member, one must demonstrate a complete lack of skill or luck in gambling and anyone who has no knowledge of the rules of the game is especially welcome. (Don’t worry, the boys will tell you if you win.) The officers from left to right are Wayne Rentsch, Vice President;Tim Deetz, Co-Vice President; Jack Polk, Assistant Vice President;and Mike Youmans, Chaplain. He stayed with the Robert Kappelers, John Pattersons, and Dan Wherleys before returning at the end of school to his hometown Aguascalientes, Mexico. There, he will have to finish his last year in high school before going on to college where he hopes to major in philosophy-a decision probably brought on by his stay in our little town where he frequently felt that there was little to do but ponder life’s problems. There were certain things he liked about our school: for instance, he thought the system was generally good and he particulerly likes the way teachers get involved with the students in extra-curricular activities. But, on the other hand, he felt that our insistence on checking attendance was unreasonable, and he thought perhaps we had too much book work and not enough lab experience in many classes. Like everyone else, he disliked study hall and our lack of “pep” at games. In general, he didn’t like all the snow we had last winter, and he thinks our prices on everything are to high! For those who want to write Alex while he is sunning himself, and eating milk chocolate, and peanuts, his address is: Alejandro Rodriguez Castro Vazquez Del Mercado 134 Aguascalientes, AGS. Mexico It j THE A WAITED DAY! And man, what a day. It all started off with the banquet at the Delphian, and then off to a small party at Mary’s house. Over the weekend everyone was pretty civilized, but on the morning of May 28, look out. It was a fantastic day, as Denise Ray, bottom left, shows us. After we all went crazy during the exercises some of us jumped in the Senior car. Pictured below are Frank Alesiano, Kay Maurer, Ron Stahl, Mike West, Pat West, Greg Baker, Mark Lieser, Larry Lindberg, Holly Truman, Janet Keener, Rhett Mackey, and Bob Graham. UNDERCLASSMEN— JUNIORS SWEAT IT OUT!! This year the class of ’79 literally “sweat it out.” The pressure started to hit in early November, when the elections were held, and the school levy failed. After this you could see those seventy-niners getting nervous— “Will they make us go to school through July next year?”— Despite the school levy not passing in November, and semester exams in U.S. 20th Century and Chemistry, (not to mention Myths Legends), you’ll find that most of them “sweat it out” through the year, (although rumor had it that plans for next year were being made to graduate at the end of semester one by a few upcoming seniors). All in all, the juniors had a pretty tough year, but somehow managed to get through it with that never-ending, fun-loving, excited, hard-working (????), class spirit. (Special thanks to the junior class from K. K. for those lovely ulcers!!) Class Officers below: Pres.-E. Seni; V. Pres. B. Peterson; Sec. Treas.-K. Davis; Hist.-L. Hazard; Assembly Rep.-S. In the picture to the right, Ken Rufener, illustrates the mental capacity of the common male. Next is Mike Berndt, confused as always as to which direction he should go. In the remaining pictures, we managed to capture rare moments of serious thought from the most unlikely specimens. In conclusion, K. K. have this to say; “It’s been real, and it’s been fun, but it hasn’t been ‘real’ fun!” Matt Judy Barb Kalich Bruce Kandel Don Kappler John Karl Todd Keffer Jay Kelker Tab Keplingcr Dan Kerns Herb Kleine Bob Kline Steve Kopec Karla Korns Ann Koval Kelly Krantz Beverly Kreisher Bertha Lang Brenda Lenarz •Buckeye Joint Vocational School 56 Nancy Lengler Pete Lieser Mark Limbaugh Dana Littlepage Alan Maize Tina Malterer Jeff Mama re 11a Regina Marino J. Remember Shaw’s comment that “youth is too valuable to be wasted on the young”? At such times we ought to decide to appreciate the life we have: the friends, the chances to work to improve ourselves, and the beautiful things we have around us. Let’s not waste youth. We know that Sandy didn’t. “We are Earth’s best, that learnt her lesson here. Life is our cry. We have kept the faith!” we said; “We shall go down with unreluctant tread Rose-crowned into the darkness!”.. .Proud we were, And laughed, that had such brave things to say. —Rupert Brooke— « SOPHOMORES Cheryl Adams Darla Adams Clark Ady Susan Amicone Catherine Amistadi Amy Jo Atkinson Donald Balder Leslie Barcus Thomas Barkett David Barnhart Tracy Beal Rick Bearducci Ron Bearducci Karina Be Her Mary Ann Berndt James Black Jody Lynn Bober Timothy Bober Patrick Boles Lori Boline Diane Border Michele Bouchard Jayne Breitenstein Rhonda Brown Kevin Burgess Kevin Burris Cynthia Buss Gary Casterline Lisa Chamberlain Tim Chumney Earl Clark Rebecca Class Scott Clay Helen Cochran 62 WERE AMAZED Ken Contini Audie Coventry Lisa Crawford Tom Cunningham Larry Daley Elaine Dalpiaz Chris Dcbois Elizabeth Deetz Doug Den bow Heidi Denison Eric Dessecker Jamie Devore Ruth Dickey Pam Diehl Robin Doidge Richard Dotts Tim Drake Tim Dummermuth Daniel Dunfee Peggy Dupler Teresa Edwards 63 SOPHOMORES Vickie Emery Connie Espenschied Connie Estepp Todd Feller Fatty Fesenmyer Tim Fisher Malissa Fisher Patricia Flaherty Brenda Flickinger Nancy Flickinger Pamela Fockler Tammy Fockler Jennifer Fox Brenda Franks James Franks Sue Frasier Jeff Froman Sharon Gallion Don Gardner Greg Garman Greg Garner Ava Gerber Jannifer Gericke John Gibbs Todd Gibbs Bill Gilmore Kris Gintz Sherry Goss 64 Leading the way for the sophomores were class officers Kris Gintz-vice president, Darlene Snyder-secretary-treasurer, Tim Drake-president, Peggy Dupler-historian, and Patty Fesenmyer-assembly representative. Their Cardinal Conference record of 4-1-1 was good enough to earn them a tie for second place. The 77-78 year included alot of close games which will be remembered. The Tornadoes led the conference in rushing and receptions and were second in passing and punting. With the absence of defensive back coach Tim Raybuck, it took the secondary a while to adjust but with the coaching of John Marks, the inexperienced backs improved each week. The team lost only two defensive and five offensive starters, so look out C.C. in 78-79. A. The team had a fine year even though the record didn't show it. They had a lot of exciting and close games, some that they won, and some that they lost. They broke even with Phila, winning once at home, and losing once at Phila. The team finished the year with a respectable 4th place in the Cardinal Conference. The team was tall and had two very quick and efficient guards in seniors Wes Luthy and Greg Kaser. They all worked well together, but as everyone does, they had their rough spots. The reserves also finished the season with a fine mark of 7-11 on the year. The junior varsities did a fine job and showed us much promise for Dover High Basketball in the future. D.H.S. Seven seniors helped to lead the team to this impressive record. They were Vince Amicone, Greg Baker, Tim Conkle, Bob Graham, Pat Kappler, Jack Nieger, and John Perkowski. John was the team’s leading hitter and was voted M.V.P. He batted .424 for the season and .553 in the Cardinal Conference. Despite many predictions to the contrary, Tornadoes again devastated the Eastern and Southeastern Districts of Ohio. Prominent among the rubble of yet another outstanding campaign was an undefeated season, a nineteen-match winning streak, the succussful defense of sectional and district championships and the continued dominance of arch-rival Phila. A new season scoring average of 47.3, a senior record of 50 wins and 2 losses and a 75-0 whitewash were among the many new standards realized. Five unheralded seniors-Mark Sudduth, Tim Deetz, Carl VonAllman, Tim Northrop and Mike Stephens and two undefeated underclassmen—Chris Mowrey and Jim Gordon paved the way. “Peanut” Petrullo had the most falls, Deetz and Mowrey shared the coach’s trophy, Stephens was named most improved, and Sudduth won the most-valuable player trophy for overall contribution to the wrestling program. All starters posted winning slates. Mowrey, Mark Black and Gordon led the second season, or tournaments, with all-conference, sectional and district, honors. Petrullo was named all conference and sectional, Brent Telle was all sectional, Deetz and Sudduth were all sectional and district with Gordon, Sudduth and Black representing Dover in the State Tournament. It was a satisfying season. With the total depletion of the upper weights by grad- uation. a challenge for the future remains: Any commoner may reach the summit with a diligent effort but who is dedicated enough to remain king of the hill? -Coach Mowrey 4 This year's Reserves were: Bottom: Dan Newell, Steve McKccver, Mike Hannakrat. He must wait in the wings until the emergency arises and be ready to participate on a moment’s notice. Preparing for the future is the other area of major consideration, for one day he shall inherit the obligation of representing his school. This year’s Reserve Wrestlers, mostly freshmen and sophomores, were outstanding—winning a fantastic 23 out of 30 individual Varsity bouts in substitute roles in addition to realizing a 4-1-0 slate of their own. Led by Todd Young, James Black and Tim Maize, seven of these young men were in enough matches or tournaments to letter and should provide valuable insurance to the continuance of our successful Wrestling program.-Coach Mowrey At Left: Mark Black goes for a take down. 115 A. The Jr. High did very well this year, under Coach Henry, ending the season with a 5-3 record. By the looks of some 7th graders, the future seems bright. The Sr. High boys team had two experiences during meets that left them with a mark of distinction. All in all it was just another season, sort of. 125 RUN FOR THE MONEY! The 1977-78 girls track team had a very fine year and represented our school very well throughout the season. This record in no way reflects the efforts of our team on the court. They played hard and showed alot of enthusiasm and ability all through the year. With the team’s most valuable player, Mary Sandy, and most improved player, Kris Gintz, both back next year, along with 3rd year coach Lou Haidnick, the girls seem to be headed toward a successful season next go-around. The varsity team members were: Row 1: Lisa VonKaenel, Terri White. Row 2: Lisa Yosick, Gail Hootman. Dalene Bair, Kris Gintz. Row 3: Dutchess Walker, Mary Sandy, Connie Espenshied, Coach Lou Haidnick, Cathie Quicksall, Angie Marino, Patti Fesenmyer. GIRLS BOUND INTO ACTION The girls basketball team finished a hard fought season with a record of 0 11. They only had two senior team members, (Karen Irby and Debbie Vance), but they also had a lot of juniors and sophomores pitching in a helpful hand. The freshmen did an out standing job in helping the reserves to a 7-3 season on the year. Mary Sandy was voted most valuable player and Debbie Vance was elected most improved. D.H.S. “LOUD-MOUTHS”!! Spirit was the name of the game this year, and it was sponsored by the spirited Dover Cheerleaders. An added feature this year was the Spirit Chain chalange between Dover and New Phila, with Dover winning by over a thousand links. In the picture below are the Varsity Cheerleaders: Lori Smith (left), Kay Owens, Marcia Hutras, Kathy Strimmel. Janet Com-mella, and Jill Doughitt. WE’RE THE BAND The senior band kept up their rep this year as the Marching Tornadoes knocked ’em dead when they participated in the Wheeling, West Virginia Competition of Bands as the show band. They also made excellent appearances in other Ohio band shows including their own Dover Marching Band Preview. The big event this year was the Tulip Time Festival in Holland, Michigan where the concert band performed in the park and the marching band was featured in the parade and left ’em shaking in their wooden shoes. The concert band kept up their superior tradition as they earned a superior rating at both District and State Contest for the seventh year in a row. STRIKING UP THE BAND The Junior Bands were certainly busy little beavers this year. Besides the oldie-but-goodie parades, they did many other “gigs”. Mr. Lyon’s Red Gray band showed us who was boss and took home a superior rating at Band Contest. Under the direction of Mr. Krause, the Cadet band received an excellent rating and performed at Park School. Rounding out the two bands’ busy schedule was Solo Ensemble Contest and the Spring and Winter Concerts. 139 SR. CHOIR. . . “HANDEL” The Senior Choir kept up their fine reputation this year presenting a Christmas concert December 15th, a Winter concert March 16th, and ending the year with their annual Spring Concert May 25th. They attended a choral workshop at Ashland April 10th, and sent 27 to Solo and Ensemble contest. Eighteen members of the choir were also included in the select ensemble, Heck’s Angels. The Freshman choir presented the Jr. High Thanksgiving Assembly, and the Eighth Grade (who are not pictured) presented the Christmas Assembly. All three performed numbers for the Winter Concert March 16th. The Sr. High joined them in this event and together again, they rounded up the year with the Spring Concert May 25th. Some of the more daring members entered Solo and Ensemble contest. With all the events that took place this year, who knows what will happen next? The Orchestra had many young members this year, there were only five upperclassmen playing strings and the rest were junior high. Even though many lacked experience in playing, they all worked hard and gave two good concerts. Great improvement was seen throughout the year. Next year there should be even more difference in quality, as everyone will have a good year of experience behind them. us THESPIANS Thespians had a very successful year as they presented two comedies, a drama and a musical. The three straight shows proved to be very well done; however, as usual it was the musical that received the “raves.” Speech Team, on the other hand, was not as successful as only two members (Ron Barkett and Karen Gallion) qualified for state. Unfortunately Ron had a previous commitment and could not participate. It was all in all a season for rebuilding. The Community Service Programs were financially as well as personally rewarding and they seemed to be well received by the community. Optimistically the Thespians look forward to an even better year in 1978-79. Row 1: Linn Holmes , Roger Pershing, Donna Jentcs , Linda Rossi . Michelle Hartz , Julia Marlow . The play deals with Helen Keller (Melissa Stofan) and the attempts of Annie Sullivan (Julia Marlowe) to teach her. Other major roles were played by John Webb, Lori Boline, and Mike Herman. Having been well received by the public, the cast was ready for competition. In May, a condensed version of the play was presented at district one-act play contest, where it received a superior rating. Julia Marlow and Lori Boline won the district title of Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively. The next step was state contest where the play again did well. Julia Marlow took the honor of Best Actress at the State level. Under the new officers and Mr. Snyder, a new enthusiasm seemed to stimulate the group. The fireworks, spirit chain, and Homecoming were all great successes, so were most of the other activities. The Student Council also provided coffee for the teachers. The most important thing done was the re-writing of the constitution, a well-needed effort. Next year we hope for the same success. 156 (opposite page) Sr. High, Row 1: Bob Peterson, Karen Gallion, Julia Marlowe, Lee Ann Bierie, Debbie Stofan, Aileen Silverstonc. They also did community services such as baking Valentine cookies for nursing home residents, and donating to Dover High School home economics department for new equipment. 166 FUTURE TEACHERS This year the Future Teachers of America were small in number, but they were one of the most active groups in Dover High School. The willingness of the people in this group is extraordinary. This year’s FTA activities have been widely varied, from the student teacher visitations at the elementary schools, to selling pens and popcorn, to visiting Kent State University for a teaching seminar. In addition the future teachers tried something new this year: a student exchange with Caraway, Indian Valley North, and Claymont. The FTA officers were Patty Pringle, Pres.; Ada Malterer, V-pres.; Linda Rieger, Treas.; Barb Jenkins, Sec. A very special thanks goes to Mr. Kane for his dedication in helping and supporting FTA and its officers. First row (left to right) Patty Pringle, Laura Hazard, Sue Peterson, Becky Class. This year’s Future Business Associates, under the Supervision of Mrs. Boich and Mrs. Schupbach, had a productive year. We donated food for the needy as a Thanksgiving project, went Christmas Caroling and bowling, had the concession stand and visited area businesses for a day. The visitation was in cooperation with the Business and Professional Women’s Club. The year ended with a mother-daughter banquet. This club is open to any senior high student interested in a business career. Shelly Border, Jane Seikel, Debbie Aston. FUTURE MEDICAL CAREERS FMC members this year were. These clubs don’t waste their time doing anything but taking trips and having a good time. Take the Biology Club: they don’t bother with meetings; all they have to do is show up for Advanced Biology Class and they’re considered members in good standing. The Ski Club has been around for three years and is growing in popularity. One of their highlights was having Roger Smith win a silver medal in a NASTAR race. While the Ski Club went off to man the slopes of Cockaigne, the Biology Club became one with nature on the Isle of Andros, Bahamas. The English department continued to be concerned with the back-to-the-basics movement which is sweeping the country. Junior High instituted a new English curriculum which emphasizes grammar, usage, and writing. High school students facing college were more concerned about enrolling in writing and literature courses. Our high school curriculum, which had permitted selection from a wide variety of offerings, was tightened up to allow certain classes to be offered on alternate years only-such classes as 19th and 20th Century American Literature, English Literature, and Creative Writing. We seemed to be slowly returning to the more traditional set-up, yet students still found a wide variety of subjects in speech, drama, literature, reading improvement, and writing-enough to meet every need. A number of history students participated in campaigning for the Dover school levy in both November and April by washing car windows in downtown Dover and calling area voters and surveying them. This year the Science Department was very active, and at times it looked as though they were running around like “cavorting beasties” with their heads cut off. However there were times when everything went smooth, and everyone seemed to slow down (like at Christmas vacation). The Advanced Biology classes made their annual trip to the Bahammas with Mr. Martin and few other “unlucky” souls as chaperones. ART TEACHERS COLOR OUR WORLD The art department had a very successful year with many students earning honors. Rhett Mackey, Richard Penix, Patty Porter, Heidi Denison, Brad Buss, and Bev Ann Kreisher all won various awards for their artwork. Charlene Snyder won the Governor’s Award, which is a prestigious honor. Overall, the art department produced many talented artists and brought much recognition to Dover High. Classes continued to be some of the most popular in school. Those delicious aromas floating through the halls gave evidence that some good cooking was going on. Some of us were lucky enough to get invited down for lunch when the Foods Classes were showing their stuff. Dover High School Gymnasium Music by HOODYWAYS S5.00 per couple Under the “leadership” of Prom Coordinators Elio Seni and Dalene Bayer, the junior class presented “THE LAND OF OZ.” After many heated discussions and “Nixon’s Mandate,” the decorating committee finally began to resemble a unified group. We started with the standard meetings-mak-ing tissue paper flowers and eventually moved on to painting murals. This year’s added attractions were stealing cornstalks, “borrowing” the bench from the county fairgrounds, building a house, inventing cardboard lollipops, painting houses for munchkin land, and, of course, constructing our own yellow brick road—not to mention stuffing our darling scarecrow ... and Dorothy, too. And from all of us-better luck next year, Jay. A Royal dance for the King and Queen followed the crowning (in picture below). THE LAST PIECE IS PLACED Commencement exercises were held on a warm Sunday May 28th at Crater Stadium. Students were addressed by four valedictorians and a salutatorian. Salutatorian Cynthia Ladrach told the class that the only hope for solving the world’s problems was a higher source— “God and the coming of His Kingdom.” The first valedictorian to speak, Ted Eigner, suggested that everyone must get involved “for the betterment of our fellowmen.” “Life is significant, but if one has the attitude that life if meaningless, for him it will be empty,” said Joan Rentsch. Linda Sperry stressed the importance of individuality, but quoted from John Donne, “No man is an island ...,” for her speech. And Mike Youmans, the final valedictory speaker, said: “The answer is two-fold. The first is respect for others and the other essential is having respect for yourself.” “YESTERDAYISN’T OURS TO RECOVER” I wanted to hold it— hug it tightly but they were around and so I picked it up and ran with it hidden underneath my shirt closed the door and on my bed carefully took it out— so limp in my hands I brushed the dust off my childhood, and wept. Unknown As of May 28,1978, our childhood was a thing of the past. Adulthood was taking hold and molding us quickly, to become the society for a better tomorrow. We have learned that the past dies with each step forward we take. But sometimes we lie dormant in the present, dwelling on what we are missing and what has already died. Instead we should be reaching out to what is yet to be born. Fear of the unknown must be overcome. Leaving childhood behind is painful, and once we leave it, we can never find again the soothing relief it once gave us. But we won't need it. 204 “BUT TOMORROW IS OURS TO U TAT ” THE BUCK STOPS HERE Welcome to the 1978 edition of the SWIRL. This year R.J. tended to be a little on the mean side, but we feel this is due to his being “Ruthless” here at the high school. As co-editors, Aileen and I would like to dedicate this book to us. And, if we hear one person say “It’s not as good as Bill’s book.” we will deliberately lock you up in the Chemistry room and mix Na-,S with HC1. Yes, this is a threat. Now back to the book. On this page you see us (Aileen Silverstone, and Tracy Davis) calmly reacting to graduating from DHS. At the bottom, are all the trouble-makers. Becky Ackerman Beth Griesen Becky Johnson Wendy Wesselgren Pat Dunlop Terry Grimm 207 THE UNSOLVED PUZZLE . . . (The following “eulogy” was delivered by Mr. Nixon the day after the Dover school levey was defeated for the 2nd time.) We mourn the passing of an old friend and employer. During her life as an institution of learning, she saw many fine years of progress. Her credits and accomplishments were known throughout the state. But now, these are but sweet memories of a bygone era, not likely to be resurrected. Death was not quick or easy for our school. It has been— and continues to be—a most painful experience for those who were close to her. The precise cause of death has not been determined, but it may be assumed that public neglect, indignation and general apathy have been contributors to the demise. While democracy has prevailed and the will of the majority —however small-heard, we would be remiss not to chastise those most responsible for this tragedy. Where else but in a democracy can those who shirk their civic responsibilities impose their self-righteous negativism on the young of a community? They accept the increases in the cost of beer, food, cigarettes and gasoline yet refuse to acknowledge the needs of such a critically important institution. While never perfect, our school did not deserve to be victimized by the “bad apple in the barrel” theory that so many have accepted. Finally, to those good folks who endeavored to pump new life into the school-I commend you for a noble if not futile effort. Perhaps in the days to come some will see the light and once again make an attempt to revitalize the vision of excellence that once was Dover. James Nixon It’s said that all good things must come to an end. It looks like dear old DHS is headed in that direction. There was a time when we joked that we wished the schools would close. But when that thought becomes a reality its no longer a joke. So even though the year has come to an end, there remains one puzzle left unsolved. Picture A: Mr. Nixon delivers his eulogy to the school. Picture B: Students support the school levy with a little “sit-down” on the front lawn. 208 I I
