New school, new friends, new courses. Might away we had to change the name of one course (ever written an abbreviation for horticulture students?). And get used to large scale traffic jams due to our use of Corvettes and other heaps. “The Joint”, as we affectionately referred to it at good old Dover High School, was just your basic school, except that we had to put up with students from other schools. We worked a little, studied a little, and slept a little. In the first year of operation. BJVS was a good experience for us. We were able to study what we wanted in a new building, and what more could anyone want? 6 out hern Hospitality. Homecoming weekend began with an assembly and the announcement that Sue Beasley, Debbie Dorn, and Julie Houglan were the three candidates for queen. That night, the thrill and excitement rose as we watched the three proceed onto the football field. As they stood in position, it was announced that the 1976 Homecoming Queen was . . . Debbie Dorn! Making the occasion more memorable, the mighty tornadoes demoted the Vi ooster generals by defeating them 14-12. To complete the weekend, we danced to the melodies of Phase II at Park School Saturday night. Every Thing Was Rosy This year the J unior Class once again chose the Hose Queen. And, once again, we honored her by walloping our football opponents. This year our Rose Queen “ceremonies coincided with the crow ning of the Homecoming Queen. The Rose Queen w as Valerie onKaenel, w ho is pictured at left, showing off her natural beauty, combined with natural roses which naturally provides us with good subject matter for this color section. 11 ft ting psyched. The mere thought of future events created a surge of excitement within us. Everyone had heen preparing for THE week. This included making fantastic hall decorations, doing a little extra for all those great guys on the team and visiting our neighbors across the river. Naturally, we wanted something to remember them by. so many of us returned home with momentoes that once belonged to citizens of Phila. (Rumor has it that even after getting nailed, a carload of unfortunate patroits still sang the Alma Vlater all the wav to the Phila Police Station.) The week started as any other week would. Wednesday was Mourn Phila Day, the day on which all sympathetic students observe the misfortunes of the gridiron “geese.” Thursday was known to avid Quaker-Crunchers as Stomp Phila Day. A variety of foot attire was seen and heard stomping its way through the halls of DIES. The traditional Kick-Off Dinner was held that evening in the cafeteria. The snake dance to the stadium, led by the Marching Tornadoes and the cheerleaders, immediately followed the dinner. The rousing bonfire would mark the end of their journey. Friday was Red and Gray Day. During the 9th period, the Pep Band came swaggering through the halls to lead the way to our pep assembly. Crowds began to arrive hours before the game was scheduled to begin. When the gates were finally opened, fans rushed in, filling the stands. W e were rough and we were tough, hut not tough enough. The great expertise of the CC Champs was stunned by the struggling undersized and inexperienced Quaker team. We kept them on their toes and the best they could do was to sweat out a 7-7 tie. 12 The Finer Side Of the Game ring active. The next 22 pages are devoted entirely and completely to the clubs of Dover High School. Not to sports, fine arts, seniors, underclassmen or the faculty, but to clubs. Among these clubs are the Senior and Junior High Student Councils, which gave us, the students, a voice in school activities; COE and OWE, who worked while they studied; FCA, EMC, FHA, l TA, FBA, those admirable students who have their futures planned; Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y, who worked on community projects; NHS, who honored us with their presence; Spanish, French, and German Clubs, who spoke in many tongues; Science Club, who developed our very own Einsteins; Audio Visual Aids and Media Center, who provided lights, cameras and action; Guidance, Attendance, Jr. High and Sr. High Office Help, who helped us bewildered students “find” ourselves; Home Ec. Club, who worked their ways into our hearts; Student Librarians, who were always booked; Jr, and Sr. Y-Tecns, who helped others; and last, but not least, Back-the-Guys who showed their enthusiasm and support by decorating lockers and putting on skits during pep assemblies like the one pictured here. 16 Art Club Spanish Club French German Clubs Media Center Adv. The Junior High Student Council was very active this year. Mr. Moeller and Miss Kennedy were the supervisors. They did a great job as always! I was TOI.D that the purpose of this club was to develope attitudes of. and practice in good citizenship, both in and out of school: to improve school morale; and to promote the general welfare of the school. Well, we won't pass judgement on that . . . BUT. What the Junior High Student Council did do this year was provide a lot of good times for a lot of good people. Some of the activities they sponsored were: Hirkday-Barn dance; 50’s day dance; pillow-fight and pizza eating contest and a million other contests and activities. The Varsity Cheerleaders are: (bottom to top) Peggy Bleiniger, Angie Schilling, kalhy koontz, Julie Houglan. Sue France, and Connie ktllz. As you can see our D.H.S. Cheerleaders spent alol of this vear mourning the lack of spirit in the student body. But besides that, they had a pretty active year. The arsily and Reserves had alot of fun thinking up and working out alot of spectacular mounts. Thev also earned money by washing windows at drive-ins, selling stationary, and buttons. Over all we think thev did a GREAT JOB!!! 54 The Reserve had a great time this year making up new mounts, and doing skits. They had alot of school spirit and they hope next year the student body gets it together with their spirit, too. The Reserves are: (bottom) Kim McDowell, Kathy Strimmel, Kelly Sippel. The thrashing by Claymont early in the year seemed to signal the end of the mighty Tornadoes’ reign of terror in local wrestling circles. Injury, illness, the energy crisis, and even the weather seemed to be conspiring against the proud hut problem-plagued Crimson, but. . , Led by seven stalwart seniors, the remnents of Dover’s first Junior High Squad, the Maulers did a complete about-face and the Tornado swirled again. In the wake of the devastation that followed, the ledger read: arch rival New Phila, the Cardinal Conference, Sectional and District Championships, and an 11-1-0 record—all under the plus column for Dover. All things considered, it was a very good year. P. T. Mowrey won the Top Dog Trophy for most pins and the Most Valuable Player for the greatest overall contribution to the program. Doug Hufford was named Most Improved Wrestler and Mike Brown shared the Coach's Trophy for individual sacrifice with sophomore Brent Telle. Dan Moser and Freshman Chris Mowrey finished undefeated in dual meets to set the pace for the regular season. The post season tournaments were rapped off with four representatives to state. Two-time qualifier Dan Moser, Jim Page, Tim Deetz, and Jim Gordon, carried the Whirlwinds’ colors to Columbus. The future remains promising, to say the least. Despite the graduation of such outstanding talent, a solid nucleus of underclassmen return augmented by sizeahle contingent of eighth graders from the fine junior high team. 60 This year’s Mat Maids are: Row 1: Jeni Fox, Gaye Moser, Jan Powell, Shawn Bertie. A first place team finish in the annual Caldwell Tournament was highlighted by seven champions; Mark Crow, Tim Maize, Dan Newell, Tim Altier, Gary Griesen, Dave Korns (capt.) and Brian Burrell (capt.). Thev are (bottom) Kick. Crone, es Luthy, Jeff Phillips: (top) Phil Ouieksall. Mike Edwards, Doug Hufford, and Coach Rabes. Seniors Doug Hufford and Phil Quicksall, earned second year awards. Also earning awards for the second year were Juniors Wes Luthy and Jeff Phillips. Two other Juniors. Mike Edwards and Rick Crone, gained first year awards. The Varsity team compiled a 19-8 record with Wes Luthy gaining trophies for the Best Golfer and for taking Fewest Putts. Jeff Phillips gained the trophy for hitting the Most Greens in Regulations. Wes Luthy established a new school record by shooting a 32 at an away golf course. High points of the year were when the team stopped Orrvilles win record at 27 and when it captured a berth in the District while being lead in the Sectional by Medalist Wes Luthy. The team’s most positive note was balanced scoring, while tournament inconsistency was a problem. 64 With four returning Varsity Letter men and a solid Reserve team, the future looks good for Dover Golf and could even become outstanding. The Reserve Golf Team compiled a 14-6 record. Members of the squad are (bottom) Pat Dunlap, Vince Pace, and Larry Minnis. (top) Steve Myers, Mark Lieser. Ron Wills, Drew Yosick. The most positive factor about the reserve team was its youth and the valuable experience and competition that the golfers gained. 65 CROSS COUNTRY—OFF AND RUNNING The 1976 Cross Country Team endured the only second losing season in its history. The guys were 1-9 in a tremendous rebuilding year. The girls, in their seconn year of competition were 3-7. A bright spot lor the Harriers was the addition of the Jr. High Cross Country Team that finished the season with a 7-3 record. Overall, on the three teams, the runners won a total of 34 indi idual awards at various inv nationals. The future looks bright with those that are returning. The essence of athletic competition is based on the premise of individual fulfillment—even though optimal performance may not necessarily be attained. If this concept is kept in mind, then our season can be judged on a more optimistic basis: we were short on victories but lengthy in the satisfaction that comes from camaraderie and teamwork. And sometimes these intangible elements are infinitely more integral than the superficial results exemplified in a win-loss record. I believe that this season contained such elements—making it an immeasurably successful experience. Co-Captain Teri Pigott ultural development. Under our fantastic directors, (Walter Heck and Sherri Hamsher), the choir has done extremely well. The 1976-77 school year started with a get-acquainted party for all the new members. It was a memorable evening! Dover Senior Choir has been very active this year. A school Thanksgiving assembly and the annual Christmas Concert were our first performances. The next big event on our calendar was the 25th Choir workshop. We hosted choirs from Orrville, Newark, New Phila, and Wooster. Our guest conductor was the well-known composer, John Ness Beck. Everyone had a thrilling day. The highlight of the choir year was State Contest which was held here at Dover High. We entered three choirs in State A-l competition: the Dover Mixed Choir, the Male Chorus, and the Ladies’ Chorus. All three received superior ratings. Our last formal performance was Spring Concert. A special addition to choir this year is a select ensemble to entertain organizations in the community. We called ourselves “Heck’s Angles.” Martha Klein. Linda Reiger. The group succeeded in presenting four straight shows and a musical. The year began with the postponement of PICNIC and the cancelling of SUBJECT W AS ROSES due to a sudden bout with mononucleosis by one of the leading actors in both shows. HARVEY then became our first show, with the magic of the imaginary white rabbit providing a memorable evening for all of those persons who attended. PICNIC was the next show presented, and it was cast with members of Mr. May’s Acting and Directing Class. SUNDAY IN NEW YORK helped display both veterans and new talent in a comedy. The drama THE CRUCIBLE turned out to be an exciting show which was highlighted by several outstanding performances by cast members. HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS-WITHOUT REALLY TRYING closed out the year as this year's musical. Next year there will be a great deal of talent returning, but there is no doubt that some fine actors and actresses will be leaving. This year's Speech Team was more successful than previous teams. Led by Ron Barkett's four regular season trophies, the team had several individuals who won trophies or certificates and we twice finished in the top five in sweepstakes. Ann Koval, Tracy Jones and Jim Archer all won individual awards. At District, Karen Gallion and Sushila Tripathy made it to runoffs before being eliminated and we had four qualifiers for State: Todd Little and Julia Marlowe in Duet Acting, Ron Barkett in Prose and Poetry, and Jim Archer in Dramatic Interpretation. Jim made it to the quarterfinals with his cutting from PATTON before finally being eliminated. This years advisor was Mr. May. First Row: Ron Barkett. Jim Archer. Julia Marlowe, President Todd Little, Mr. May. Second Row: Sushila Tripathy, Cindy Ohler, Angie Schilling. Nikki Stofan, Bob Cunningham. Third Row: Karen Gallion. The cast provided audiences with three nights of fun-filled comedy with the imaginary six-foot white rabbit, Harvey, and his friend, the likeable Ellwood P. Dowd. Originally scheduled to he the third show on the Thespian calendar, several unexpected events made it the first show of the year and began a rugged calendar of four straight shows and the musical. The play deals with a man who befriends a large white rabbit who happens to he invisible. His sister attempts to commit him to a sanitarium, but the rabbit intervenes and the rest of the play is all fun. The subtle humor of HARVEY makes it a truly memorable play. 92 PICNIC For ihree performances on Thursday, January 12, Friday, January 13, and Sunday, January 15, the Thespians presented William Inge’s PICNIC. The cast was composed of members of Mr. May’s Acting and Directing class. Opening night was temporarily marred bv a prank fire drill, but the actors did not allow this disturbance to effect their performance. Three sparse, hut appreciative audiences saw this first winter production of the 1976-1977 Thespian year. Each year a different group is, according to parents and teachers, inflicted with a contagious disease called “senioritis.” If a junior gets out of line, it’s o.k., but a senior has “senioritis.” Well, they can only use that word for any group so long and then it doesn't apply. No question about it; we had our share of “senioritis.” But we did some work too. And it’s that combination of work and enjoyment that we will remember about our senior year. This picture shows two typical Dover High School Seniors and one not-so-typic J student. Mow you can see the results of being in Dover High School for four years. Y es, it has had an effect on some, hut most Dover Seniors on the whole resemble the middle individual and not Jeff Stuher and Dave art her. Now that we’ve scared those freshmen, we'll just remind you that being a Senior means one last fling in DHS. 123 GRADUATION 77: D.H.S.’ BIG EVENT Crater Stadium was standing-room-only in spite of record May 29 heat as 251 Dover Seniors received their diplomas. Four validictorians and a salutatorian each gave briefly what Principal Robert Schrock called “the best assortment of speeches I’ve heard in . . . commencement exercises.” Sally Jo Fait (first, right) said that they had been given knowledge but needed to acquire experience. Jessica Lind (second, right) expressed fears that the educational system was aimed toward uniform opinion rather than critical thinking. Bradley Miller (third, right — shown receiving his diploma from his mother, Board President, Shirley Miller) said, “The drummer has beaten differently for each of us and yet we arrive at this day together . . Nikki Stofan (fourth, right) 124 declared: “To take a mature attitude and say that maybe all is not perfect while being able to learn and build from the imperfections is the key to a happy successful life. Salutatorian Candace Scharein (fifth, right) concluded that the “success or failure (of the class) was a matter of personal choice.” 125 A—Joni Korns—Walking tall. B—Now if we can just keep Jim from going into his Jimmy Stewart act .... C—Hold back on that Hip-Hip-Hoo Rah! until the ceremony is over and we’ll all join you, Angie. D—Don't look so bored, Tom. E—“See Sis, if I can do it, you can do it,” says Cheryl Burkholder. F—“Geez, Dad! We’re in public!” Daddy’s little angel. Sue Beasley, gets a bear-hug. G—Sorry Kid. You’re just gonna have to wait your turn. MIXED EMOTIONS ot seniors. That’s the best way to describe underclassmen. They are usually fairly active in band or art or sports and are ready to take over when the seniors move out. Without underclassmen, why the school would be not only less crowded, but it would also be quieter. But who would teachers pick on? And who would worry about tests and quizzes? W'orrying about everything is a part of the joy of being an underclassman. Juniors 130 Prom 140 Sophomores 142 Freshmen 152 Eighth Grade 162 Seventh Grade 172 5 DOWN, 1 TO GO! Dover High School Gymnasium Music by PIZAZZ $5.00 per Couple Not many people are thinking about the Prom in February, but for the members of the Prom decorating committee it was just as real then as it was in May. For three months before the Prom juniors were busy making flowers, palm trees, and picking up rocks out of fields. About two weeks before May 13th the rush was on. Everyone worked hard making murals, building bridges, and doing the final planning. The evening before the Prom, everything came together. Pick-up trucks flocked in with decorations which had been stored all over Dover. The decorating committee worked Thursday night and all day Friday. Unbelievable as it first seemed, all was ready by 8:00. The gym lobby was decorated with Tahiti huts, fountains, beaches, and exotic gardens, turning the school into a tropical paradise. Pizazz provided music and didn’t let us down. Peggy Bleininger was crowned Prom Oueen, with Linda Zifer and Kathy Riley as attendants. After the Prom there was time for a change of clothes and some “refreshments.” The Post-Prom was held at Park School with Raven. The annual party at Sweg’s lake came next and everyone was on their own until morning. Now, as we look hack on our sophomore year, we remember many experiences that occurred. Those fun times (?) in gym class, whether it was playing crab soccer or being Olga Korbuts on the gymnastic equipment. Also, our class always showed super shool spirit as we came decked out in our clashiest outfits for the Dover-Ashland football game. And how could we forget the moments we spent with that “special” someone at lunchtime or at one of the many dances we were at—last invited to attend. This year’s teachers were, for the most part, last year’s teachers, which, theoretically, should have made this year the same as last year. But if wasn’t. Why Mr. Padgett didn’t smile on one day this year! But C. L.’s Dress and Tie Day was a big hit among chemistry students. And who can forget the films from Sparky’s class? Such learning experiences helped us pass, even though we sometimes fell asleep or oc-cassionally earned detention. The teachers and administrators worked hard trying to prepare interesting classes for uncivilized students who had a “blast.” Ah, well, blame it on society. Mr. Schrock moved to the old but newly decorated D.C.T. room. That new red carpet really helped as a conversation piece when students dropped in for a “chat.” (Some of us saw it more often than others.) Vie found Mr. Koval had moved in next door behind the glass partition, and Mrs. Contini welcomed us in a little anteroom. Quite a swell set-up! Then Mr. Baker moved in to Mr. Schrock's old office and brought along a miniature greenhouse with him. The attendance office we found in the old high school office, just where we could find it easily when summoned to explain that mysterious absence from advanced math. 184 Jr. High Principal Charles Wilson Jr. High Vice-Principal Kdward Moeller Above we see the amiable Junior High Principal, Mr. Charles ilson, talking to little Johnny Mitchell. Sue Can-field, along with the old reliables, Tom Kane and Merle Whitis. The junior high guidance department kept as busy as ever building a solid future for the junior high students of DHS. Their doors were always open and many students took advantage of this opportunity to discuss their school problems with the sympathetic counselors. A highlight of DHS this past year was the library. Here you could find a sweet-smiling, elf-like person scampering among the biographies. (Just kidding Miss Me, we all know you’re not a gnome. Besides, your faithful sidekick. Miss Norris, doesn't care.) But seriously now folks, the library was a great place to meet friends, cause trouble, and thrash on fellow-classmates and teachers. We’d like to say a few words about the teachers’ aides. These helpers put up with a lot of hassle from kids and teachers alike. They do a great deal of work and deserve a big thank-you. This year’s OASIS newspaper was an experimental one in the fact that we tried to incorporate photographic printing into our newspaper production. This slowed down production because we had to learn about the process first. On the whole, though, we had a good year and it was truly an educational experience. THE JR. HIGH PRESS entered its third year with Jeff Maurer as editor and Mrs. Eaton returning as advisor. Each month an edition was produced concerning the recent events. Our first issue was based on the theme “Jr. High Press Returns”, followed by the Dover-Phila game, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, and “School’s Out” issues. I certainly hope the Jr. High enjoyed this year’s newspaper for we really had fun making it. However, it has not been forgotten. As a matter of fart, it is one of the most frequently visited places in DHS. Here they offer a wide variety of courses to help us survive in the big, cruel working world. Here we can learn everything from managing a business to how to take quick notes in English class. The teachers of the business department have not been forgotten, either. Their smiling faces are often seen wandering through halls. They’re just making sure that life does exist in other parts of the building. Math is a subject that we have all come to know and love. As we can see from the pictures above, math teachers come in a variety of shapes and sizes. But don't let their appearance fool you. They really ARE teachers. And believe it or not, all of them have at least a sixth grade education. These included the least work done in one year by the most people, the most spitballs thrown on the ceiling of the girl's restroom, and finally our most cherished feat: the new world record for the DHS-Litty's-DHS Marathon. The people in Swirl Staff are really quite interesting. Where else could you find a guy that talks like Jimmy Stewart, a w hale in shorts, and three adorable sisters? No matter what anyone says about Swirl Staff, we really are hard workers. We know that this year's Swirl is great! So the next five minutes we will allow for applause. (Pause) Thank-you thank-you. The biggest change that occurred during the 1976-1977 year had to center around the opening of the Buckeye Joint Vocational School. Many Doverites found it an exciting new life—a bright new building and a bright new future in careers of their own choosing. Over there in Schoenbrun at its location behind the Kent State Branch, Dover students could be found repairing bulldozers and farm tractors, making bent fenders look like new, taking care of pre-schoolers in a day-nursery situation, cooking veal parmesan, or growing and arranging flowers. One unusual art form that girls from BJVS demonstrated for Dover teachers was called “sand painting.” This involves creating designs with colored sand on the inside of glass bowls which will contain growing plants. Of course many other fields are represented at BJVS; one of the most popular is the secretarial-clerical field. Many Dover students went into such programs. But the really big story of the year was the weather. The winter of ’76-’77 proved to be the most severe in many years. Beginning in December and lasting into February, record snowfalls closed roads and blizzard conditions, coupled with sub-zero temperatures, slowed activity in the whole state to a near-halt. It was not unusual for students walking to school wrapped from ears to toes to see-8° registered on the bank's outside thermometer. Dover students missed only five days during the second and third weeks of January, but many Ohio schools were closed for a month or longer because of the weather or the closely-related fuel shortage. The picture at the top of the page shows the typical scene of the winter. Dover students, however, managed to maintain a fairly good attendance record in spite ol the drifts. Then, for its final irony, the weather gave us sweltering heat and near-drought during the last two weeks of May. The school yard looked like opening day in August instead of closing day in June as the year ena-ed. 208 ✓ —I
