PROM, weSfi sport MISTY II I TER-COLORED MEMORIES Thinking about 1975-1976 at Dover brings to mind many “Misty watercolor memories (Thanks Barbara). There were those singular, unique moments when we were walking in the rain with a friend, or taking an extra hard test, or just out rompin' and stompin’ that seemed to stretch out so lone then but we can only recall them now as ... . SCATTERED PICTURES.... It’s hard for us to remember all the goings on in 1975-1976 school year! But most of the time we were together with friends acting goofy, or being glamorous, sharing secrets, laughter, and pride in accomplishment. Combining talent and pagentry were the 1975 76 Majorets. Kneeling: Rhonda McCune, Sue Gilmore, Kim Murphy, Kathy Riley, Lina Weiar. Standing: Millie Perkowaki, Paula Wikoff, Cathy Cree, Linda Harmon, and Polly Beitzel. 5 • s i OF THE SMILES WE LEFT BEHIND Yeah, we left an awful lot of smiles behind us — sunny smiles, funny smiles, smiles at girl or boyfriends. We also recall those proud smiles, like the one you gave when you finished your project in shop, sewed that first dress in Home Ec, did a double flip on the tramp when everyone else was afraid to even try one, and remember the time you aced that Chem test? Wait a minute. NOBODY ever aced a Chem test! You got a 99, remember? Even though we left so many smiles behind us we still look forward to a lot more next year. CAN IT BE THAT IT WAS ALL SO SIMPLE THEN? Simple, well pari of the time at least. There were those simple little things we did to pass the time away like playing cards, going down to the gas station to buy a bag of Corell’s and a box of Tic-Tacs, or talking to girls on the phone, or just plain being simple. Being in the band wasn’t so simple for the Bandsmen, yet they were easy to listen to with songs like, “Free Ride, “Long Train Run-nin. ' and “Tommy,” (Way to fight, Fred). fl, WET WEATHER WELCOMES HOMECOMING The 1975 Queen and her court were: Nancy .Marshall and Tom Lagatta, Queen Kathy Moliski and Terry Pearson, and Sue Gilmore and Steve Contini. wm Well, we won't try to make any excuses for the team, but it was terribly cold, and it was pouring like crazy, (which the few valiant fans pictured below can easily acknowledge) and the other guys were REALLY big (which the Tornadoes will quickly admit). But we put on a brave fight, despite the conditions. The Homecoming ceremonies had to be held at the dance at Park School, instead of at half time. But other than that, things went off smoothly with pretty Kathy Vloliski being crowned Homecoming Queen. We bumped and boogied to the music of “Suite. Afterwards, many went to fancy restaurants to eat. 11 The mighty Dover Machine mauled, brawled and over hauled the Quackers in the classic contest. There was no doubt Dover held the upper hand the entire game. Through a great team ef- fort, the underdog Tornadoes made everything come together. It was a fitting game for the seniors to end on as Fhila has never beaten “their class all the way back through 8th grade. A: The tough Dover “Dee” man handle a Phila hall carrier. B: Another score for Gene Reese. C: Way to stick. Rich Cato! 12 13 AND IF WE HAD THE CHANCE TO DO IT ALL AGAIN, COULD WE, WOULD WE? “NO WAYr - SENIORS ’76 We were really something in 1975-1976. remember? The Class of 76 were ruff, tuff, and bad enough to handle anything that came along (Except for an occasional Ralph test). Vi e were smart, with six Valedictorians, carrying four points. Somehow or another we made it through six years at D.H.S. and then we were ready to exit stage right, to go out into the world, or at least to college. 15 16 DUS SENIORS: OH SO TOUGH!!! The fire proved to be a blessing in disguise for those juniors working on the 1976 prom, “Nights on Broadway.” While everyone else stayed home enjoying the unexpected day off, the prom committee labored into the wee hours taping up posters and wrestling rolls of chicken wire. Saturday evening couples rolled up in clean shiny cars (courtesy of the cross-country sponsored car wash—opportunists, aren't they?). Madhouse did the honors in the music department. After several hours and a quick change of clothes and maybe something else, we danced while Wild Cherry (Yeah!) played some funky music! Then on to Sweg’s lake and after that if you were still awake and could take it, breakfast. GRADUATION DAY, DOVER, OHIO Dear Gram and Grampy, I’m sorry you couldn't make it to graduation, but I realize Newark, New Jersey is a long way from Dover. You would've enjoyed it! Even though I couldn’t button my shirt at the neck, I wore a tie and looked pretty sharp (Mom took some pictures w hich we're sending along). It was terribly hot and crowded. Strutting past the stands, it sounded like a clock factory with all the whirling and clicking cameras. Six kids got aledict, can you imagine? A sudden hurst of wind knocked off Kathy Cornelia's hat. It was kinda funny. And wouldn't you know, they only gave us the cover for our diplomas, which they'll mail to us with our report card! Love, Bill Pictured at the right are Senior Boy and Girl Representatives, Steve Contini and Kathy Moliski. Do you remember when girls paraded in mini-skirts and guys wore bell-bottoms, hip-hugger jeans? Well, today the scene in the halls of D.H.S. has changed as the guvs have plaid flannels or stenciled T-shirts with denim bibs or off-white painter’s pants. The females’ choice is one piece jumpsuits, below the knee-skirts, platform shoes and sandals, and multicolor toe socks. She completes her outfit with Indian jewelry or mood rings. Our great class officers lead us through our first year as part of the high school scene. Since this was our first year in the senior high, we had our first hall to decorate. The decorations really came out super! We even made a ‘D” for the football players to run through on the night of the Dover-Fhila football game. We had the priviledge of being the first high school class to hold a dance in the brand new Elks Ballroom. Everyone there danced to the music of Eclipse. We really had a good turnout for the dance. The Junior High students struggled with the basics as usual, but many freshmen added speech to their schedules since it is now a requirement for graduation. In high school, modern novel, myths and legends, great books, mass media, and advanced language study had large enrollments. American Lit students enjoyed a field trip to Hale Homestead near Akron where they saw “the way it used to be” first hand. Seniors were more concerned than usual about learning to write and speak “properly” in this year that saw the media flooded with reports that high schools across the nation are turning out graduates whose writing ability is decreasing with each succeeding year. A cheering note: some returning grads, for instance Belinda Cassiano, felt they were better prepared in English than were most of their new college acquaintances. Belinda stated: “I found out that Dover is a good school.” Pat Powell (Jr. High) Ruth Pritchard (Jr. High) Mike Rahes (Jr. High) 106 OASIS STAFF MEMBERS OF THE OASIS STAFF ARE: Front: 'boug Hufford, Fred Mamarella, Laurie Hagloch. Meet the men (and woman) who devote their lives to music education and the teaching of intricate rhythms to some people who can't even walk and chew gum at the same time. In picture A, we see Mr. Lyon helping a future Buddy Rich to learn how to play rudiments and cadences which he will need in life to succeed as a successful percussionist. All this kid knows is that he's having fun heating on a desk w ith pointed sticks. In picture B, we see our lovable choir director, Mr. Heck, here he is seen posing as a vampire during the Choir Halloween Party. Even music educators like to have fun. Doesn’t he look like he’s enjoying himself? Moving right along to picture C, we see our Orchy man Mr. McFerran. You may ask ‘ Vt hat's a Orchy man? and then again you may not. If you do, orch is short for orchestra. If you don t disregard this last statement. Looking now at picture D, we see our music department chairman, Mr. Delphia. Doesn t he look intelligent? Doesn't he actually appear as if he's helping a student rather than posing for a picture? Meanwhile, the student is trying to figure out how to play the cover of her lesson book on the clarinet. .Next we go to picture E. No, it's not the D.H.S. taxidermy club, but it's Mr. Toomey and her class of junior high music students. This week she is teaching her class how to sing a round . . . around the piano. If you've been carefully counting the pictures, you will have noticed that one of the directors has been left out. This is tv pi cal of Mr. Krause. The program allows the student to spend the morning in class working at such skills as: office machines, typing, bookkeeping and filing. The afternoons are spent working in clerical positions in area businesses. We, the Class of ’76. had an interesting and productive year. We raised money for the annual Employer Appreciation Banquet by selling Tapestry Calendars and candy bars; sponsoring a concession stand and coat check; having a bake sale and paying monthly class dues. Serving as representatives were: Supervisor: Mrs. Linda Early, President: Kathy Moliski, Vice-President: Connie Monaco, Secretary: Katie Haglock, Treasurer: Pam Keener. All in all, the twenty-three members had a very good year! Kathy Moliski 132 VIC VIC—What is it? What does it stand for? How long has it been active? VIC once a state organization for boys in the Vocational Machine Trades has now developed into a national organization. VIC stands for Vocational Industrial Club and it is in its twenty-fifth year at DHS. There are fifteen boys in the club this year. They are led by the president, Harry Shaw, a junior. Members of this club are actively preparing themselves for industry. Work in the shop varies in size, shape, and complexity according to the abilities of the students. Anything from small hand tools, bench vises, drill presses and from power hacksaws to a commercial-sized hydraulic press designed and built by Dave Loibl, have been made or are in the making in the vocational shop. Ths is the last year for VIC here at DHS. The program will be phased out by Buckeye JVS! Front Row: Harry Shaw. Todd Davidson, Jay Becker. After opening victories over John Hay and Claymont, the Tornadoes were set hack by a strong Malabar team. The team then showed determination and hard work in rebounding to victories over Coshocton, Wooster, and Madison, before “slipping” to a loss at the hands of Akron Springfield. Dover next continued their domination in the C.C. by downing Ashland, before losing to a strong Cambridge eleven while looking ahead to “THE GAME”. In “THE GAME”, Dover finished by painfully plucking the quaking Quakers. Gene Reese was chosen ihe MVP of ihe DOVER-PHILA game. Nevertheless, the team worked hard, and even though their record didn't show it, they had an exciting season involving many down to the wire games. They also won their first tournament game and they rose to the occasion and beat Phila twice. AT LEFT —Coach Andreas points out something of interest to Rich Sherrel. Tornado warnings were still the order of the day as the matmen ripped 13 of 14 regular season opponents, won the sectional title for the eighth time in nine years, and topped another fabulous effort with their third District Crown. Captain Tom McKeever, Harry Olgetree, Bob Gilmore, Tom Jones and Kandy kaderly anchored an impressive 52-3-1 record over the last four years—.945 percent and the best senior slate in Dover’s wrestling history are graduating but the fortunes of man’s oldest sport is not necessarily loosing down. Kaderly and junior Dan Moser earned trips to the State Meet and several fine athletes return to bolster next year's effort. “1 honestly think next season’s seniors have a chance to equal or surpass many of the accomplishments of the past years.” Veteran Coach Paul Mowrey commented. “It has been said that no champions are real champions until they are champions of their own conference—that should be incentive enough for the kids!” Front Row: Capt. Despite a poor 2-7-0 dual meet record on the year, this goal was accomplished by Coach Doug Strickmaker’s crew. Meeting the best competition available, learning the fundamentals and giving a total effort in tournaments were all realized; and several potentially fine wrestlers—working up through the ranks—will be a welcome addition to the Tornadoes' traditionally tough teams. mam a m a ■ a a ■ m ■ a a I I Row 1: Ron Malone (Mgr), Eric YonAllman. We wanted to win the C.C.. but we started slow and midway through the season we found that goal out of reach. We then turned our efforts to the tournament and to w inning 20 games. We finally started playing hall and did exceptionally well in the tournament by winning the Sectional and District crowns. Vt e finished out the season at a 13-3 clip. Some other accomplishments we achieved were (1) leading the C.C. in both hitting and home runs with .313 and 19 respectivly, (2) turning 25 double plays, and (3) being the first Dover Baseball team to win the District. Highlites of the year were the Canoe Trip, beating Phila, and going down to Columbus to watch Kutz and Holmes run in the All-State Individual Meet. 166 Besides having an outstanding team record, the Dover Harriers produced some outstanding individuals. Captains Scott kutz and Boh Holmes along with Steve Fetersheim and Steve Contini all made the All-District Team, kutz and Holmes also made the Cardinal Conference Team and the Eastern Ohio Coaches Team with Steve Fetersheim getting Honorable Mention. The reserve ran to a 4-4 season while placing 4th in Cardinal Conference action. X ith a good outlook ahead of them, they lookto once again make the title, “kD Strider,” an honorable one to hold. DOVER GOLF TEAM-UP TO PAR The golf team compiled a fine 19-7 record with a team considered to be in the building process. With the stability of two fine seniors leading the team, Dover surprised many of their opponents. Earning first year letters were Juniors Doug Huf-ford and Phil Quicksall, as well as Sophomores Steve Bedrosian, Wes Luthy, and Jeff Phillips. The future for Dover Golf looks good with the returning lettermen. The Reserves had a respectable team record finishing at 15-9. Hoping to move from the Reserve squad into the role of Varsity lettermen are Sophomores Rick Crone and Mike Edwards and Freshmen Pat Dunlop and Larry Minnis. The youth of the reserve team is vital in the growth of the golf program. In looking hack over the season it is important to keep in mind that Dover plays one of the strongest schedules in the State. Coschocton was the best team in Ohio by its State Championship. Tuscarawas Central Catholic and Garaway were Class A State Champs and runner-up, respectively. Dover was the only team to defeat both of them. Kneeling: Rick Crone, Pat Dunlop, Steve Bedrosian, Jeff Phillips, Doug Hufford. Standing: Mike Edwards, Bob Bouchard, Phil Quicksall, Don White, Wes Luthy. Absent when picture was taken: Larry Minnis and Coach Rabes. 168 The Senior returning lettermen were Bob Bouchard and Don White. Bob emerged as the dominant golfer in the Cardinal Conference and the Eastern District. Bob established new Dover golf records in the following areas: 1. Undefeated Season 25-0-1 2. Lowest Average 3. Most Greens in Regulation 4. Lowest Home Score Score-71 5. Lowest Away Score Score-71 Don was the steadiest back-up man in the number 2 spot that Dover has had in a number of years. His determination and dedication helped the varsity to some of its fine tournament finishes: Norwalk Invitational 1st. Dover Invitational 2nd. Quaker Invitational 2nd. AAA Cardinal Conference 3rd. Sectional 3rd. District 9th. Coach Rabes hopes that the team will be able to fill their spikes from next year’s golfers. 169 The DHS Tennis team didn't do as well as expected, but they learned alot (especially about wind shots.) The weather worked against them so their final record was a dismal 7-13. They picked up 4th in Cardinal Conference Tournament. The team is only graduating two seniors so their great depth is sure to be an asset in years to come. Individual Awards were given to: Garth Redinger—Most season wins. During the month of December members participated in the Christmas musical, “Gift of the Magi” with an evening performance December 11 and a student body performance December 12. A video taping for Cable T.V. 2 was made for their December 18 concert. Their Winter Concert on March 11 was a big success followed by Solo and Ensemble Contest at East Liverpool on April 3 earning 9 solo superiors, 2 ensemble superiors, and 3 solo excellent. Combined with the Senior Choir and Band for Bicentennial selections in the Band Spring Concert the Freshman Choir showed their outstanding abilities. The Spring Concert on May 27 included all the choirs. In June the awards banquet was scheduled in honor of the fine, young students who show the makings of a more than superior Senior Choir. We went hack to the farm after the first heavy snow for a sled riding party. Both of these activities were planned by choir council, the organizing body of the choir. This year’s council consisted of: Terry Pearson-President: Brenda LelandA ice-President; Cheryl Gray-Treasurer; and Kathy Moliski-Secretary. Sr. Heps. - Don Irven. Bobbi Machan, and Kim Contini. Jr. Heps. - Shawn Gray, Todd Lillie, and Joyce Walter. Soph. Heps. - lx raine Ogletree, Cathy Fesenmeyer, and Ron Barkett. Newspaper Editor - Handy Baughman and Business Ed. - Kate Carey. Our advisor was Mr. Heck. The choir went to a workshop at Wooster, and gave a fine performance in our auditorium, plus accompanying the hand in their bicentennial concert. The choir also had a few-money making projects, such as a rock-a-thon, rummage and hake sale, and a dance featuring MELVIN AND THE NUCLEAR TURNIPS. The choir had a very fun and rewarding year. The Senior High Student Council (Wise's Turkey Tootsie's) was a mere existance in this establishment of education. To say we were active, powerful, and the backbone of DHS is an exageration of the truth, to say the least. But we were busy, doing menial busywork. The need for a Student Council is unknown, and has been lost in the generations. Over the years, the spirit has gone out of our Council, and apathy into the Senior High. The all-female officers — (PRES — Lori Yosick; VICE PRES — Patti Quicksall; REC. SEC. — Sue keitch; COR. SEC. — Sue Hayes; TRES. Kellie Murphy) would like to be remembered as saving “ A GOBBLE A DAY, KEEPS YOU HEALTHY, WEALTHY, GAY”. Lori Yosick PRES in name only 204 SENIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL: THE BARE FACTS JR. Oh, well, two out of three ain't bad! In picture A, we have provided vou with a puzzle; HOW MANY THINGS CAN YOU FIND WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? Actually, it is a picture of the Swirl Staff, consisting of our advisor, Ray Johnston, who is trying hard to look impressive, and also the Swirl Staff members: Bill Silverstone, Beth Czatt, Joe Webb, Randy Baughman, Craig Douthitt, Dan Korth, Mike Brown, Kevin Kendle, Greg Zivic, Nancy Marshall, Sue Hayes, Don Ball, Candy Scharein, Lori Yosick, and Ron Swegheimer. There were a few members. Sue Beasley, Diana Shanklin, and Carmie Monaco, who do not appear in this picture. This is either because they were sick, skipping class, or didn’t want to be seen with us in public. In picture B, we see our yearbook editors Don Ball, Sue Hayes, Randy Baughman, and Nancy Marshall being congratulated after graduation by the all-powerful, super-intelligent, always-on-the-ball, editor-in-chief. Bill Silverstone, who is shown here with his tassle on the wrong side of his head. Y es, Bill, they did let you graduate. The Swirl Staff sincerely wishes for you to enjoy this hook, and encourages you to spread vour praise and appreciation for it far and wide over the community. We are not interested, however, in your complaints. If you wish to complain, we cordially invite you to sit on this book and rotate. What have you done for the good of this hook, anyway? That’s right, stupid, nothing! For the rest of you who don’t complain, we are proud to present you with this perfect yearbook, which contains absolutely no mistaks. —The Beef 206 1st ANNUAL FIRE A SUCCESS Credits: Cover Design—Lori Yosick Student Photo graphers—Bill Silverstone and Mike Bro w n Business Manager—Carmela P. Monaco Photography—Troup and Pluto of Canton (Some Pictures Courtesy of the TIMES REPORTER and Mitchell Studios.) On Friday, May 7, 1976, at 5:30 a.m., Dover High School had its FIRST ANNUAL FIRE. This event was celebrated by the closing of school and also by a short parade consisting of firetrucks, police cars, and a few students who disregarded this holiday and still showed up for school. This year, the fire was held in the shipping room; but, as the room proved too crowded to hold this momentous event, it tried to extend itself into the auditorium. This act, however, was quickly thwarted off by alert firemen who had just arrived on the scene. Shortly afterwards, Dover High School’s FIRST ANNUAL FIRE came to a close. The fire may have gotten out of hand if it hadn't of been for the trusty, super-steel elevator door which held its own throughout the event. After this exciting occasion was completed, the manipulation of many mixed emotions occured. The shipping room office was really burned up about the whole thing, and the halls were still fuming for several days afterwards. On the other hand, as soon as the news of the FIRST ANNUAL FIRE reached the Swirl Staff, we immediately ran down to the shipping room with out hotdogs and marshmallows on sticks, hoping to arrive in time for the Swirl Staff's FIRST ANNUAL WIENER AND MARSHMALLOW ROAST: but, as you can see in picture A, we arrived too late. As a result, the Swirl Staff’s FIRST ANNUAL WIENER AND MARSHMALLOW ROAST was a flop. Oh, well, to have two big exciting events on the same day would have been asking for too much. The Swirl Staff didn't want to be left out of the FIRST ANNUAL FIRE completely, so some of us decided to form a clean up crew for the shipping room, while a few others decided it would just be easier and more profitable to sell the shipping room, as you can see in picture B. All in all, it was a pretty exciting event and it did leave the main hall black with envy. The Swirl Staff is anxiously awaiting the SECOND ANNUAL FIRE, but the administration has no current plans of sponsoring this event for a second time. 207 Mr. McCartney Teacher at Dover High School from 1948 to 1975 In a way Dover High was his school — he had been here so long, longer than anyone else now here. We saw him standing in the hall, friendly grin on his face, hands in his pockets. “Come in and we'll talk it over,” he'd say when we had a problem. And we came in, hundreds of us over the years, into the spartan counselor's office that suddenly became a warm, friendly place as the burdens fell away. “I am a part of all that I have met. Tennyson's words ring in my ears now. And suddenly I know that Mac is a part of me and all who went into that office. Now when I offer the warm smile and friendh handshake to someone, it may be Mac’s influence a' work in me. Just think. Hundreds of warm smiles anc friendly greetings every day. What better tribute could a man ask? Lisa Warner Member of the Junior Class Somehow you remember the shy yet friendly one the girls and boys who quietly do their work and smil and answer quietly when they are called on. Yoi remember them. And w hen one seat where one of thes sat is suddenly vacant, it is a great loss. Lisa was such one. 208 V
