2 It’s getting better all the time. I used to get mad at my school— The teachers that taught me weren't cool. You’re holding me down, turning me round, Filling me up with your rules. I’ve got to admit it’s getting better A little better all the time. From “Getting Better Sgt. Many of the recommendations for improvement centered around the need for more space. The major concern of the Administration this year was to provide additional school facilities so that we may continue to provide the students of Dover the best educational program possible. 18 — Bill E. Highly regarded school system . . . students should be proud of this; however, it’s probably taken for granted by many . . . seemed to have noticed a bit of complacency which probably contributes to the LACK OF TRUE school spirit. That surprised me at first . . . Overall, I've enjoyed my first semester at Dover. The students are great . . . need not take a back seat to any school anywhere! 22 Mr. Daniels Floyd May — Speech Mary Lou Patterson — Home Economics Ray Johnston — English Lois Miller — Home Economics Above: Ruth Burky — Home Economics § Left: Joyce Archer — Home Economics Pat Powell — English 9 23 Right: Judy Vasbinder. Many semester-length units of study have replaced the traditional year long courses. In addition the cooperative-work-study programs have been expanded. Students have become more involved in school decisions and today’s young people seem more aware of and interested in the community into which they are being graduated. 25 —Jim Nixon Ralph Padgitt — Math 26 Irene Koval — Spanish Above: Josephine Gersdorff — Spanish Left: Margot Dean — French Gertude Herz — German Natalie Loop — French 27 Above: A. I Senior Band TORNADOES MAKE HIT ON BROADWAY .... and other places too!!! “Ladies and gentlemen, under the direction of Mr. Fredrick Delphia, assisted by Larry Gillaspie and Terry Krause, Drum Major Tom Kelker and Head Majorette Beth Straub, we proudly present the 1972-73 Dover High School Marching Tornadoes!” This fanfare was only a crescendo which began the brilliant Marching Season. Clad in new crimson and white uniforms, football fans, parade viewers, and loyal band patrons, felt the earth move as we did our thing. The Marching Band was involved in many band shows which included Newcomerstown, New Philadelphia, Defiance, Waynedale, and the Dover Band Show which drew a capacity crowd at Crater Stadium. All efforts displayed were rewarded when Mr. Delphia announced “Macy’s”! Our itinerary included parades in New Rochelle and the Bronx, a performance at St. Raymond’s Cathedral, dinner at Mama Leone’s, a night out at Radio City Music Hall, and our spine tingling never-to-be forgotten march down Broadway in the 47th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. 34 SEATED ON FLOOR: Ginny Gerber. Solo and Ensemble Contest proved to be highly successful as over 115 musicians traveled to Carrollton to participate. For the first time, District Contest was hosted at Dover High School with thirteen bands hoping to earn a superior rating which enables them to go on to the State Finals. Dover received a Superior at District and traveled to Warren for the State Finals and proved themselves again, coming home with another Superior rating. The fine dedicated musicians presented a Spring Concert and a concert at the Outdoor Drama with the Junior Band. To conclude such a spectacle-filled year, the band traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana, where they performed in the annual Indianapolis 500 Race. —Beth Straub Bob Blickensderfer 35 Majorettes: LEFT TO RIGHT: Debbie Arnold, Beth Straub — head. The Dover Junior Band began its busy school year with rehearsals during the month of August. With its 135 members, under the baton of their director Larry Gillaspie, they worked very diligently on their basic music fundamentals. By the time school had started, the junior band was efficiently organized and well under way. The first performance of the year was the Veteran's Day parade, followed by the Christmas parade. Next, the band presented its winter concert which was the best winter performance ever given by the junior band. As a treat the band journeyed to Wintersville, Ohio to be guests of the Winter9ville Junior Band and to attend their concert. Also, during February, over ninety members of the band participated in the OMEA District Solo and Ensemble Contest. The band's spring performances included the annual Junior Band Festival, held at New Philadelphia, featuring the junior bands from Cambridge, Tusky Valley, Strasburg, New Philadelphia, and Dover. Also, they presented a combined spring concert with the Dover Sr. Band at the Outdoor Drama Theatre, and participated in the Memorial Day Parade. The highlight of the spring schedule is the annual OMEA district VIII Junior Band Chorus Contest in which the band participated at Lake High School in Uniontown. An enjoyable and productive year was the result of the hard work and the diligent practice of the 1972-73 Dover Junior Band. 39 Mr. Gillaspie FIRST ROW: Michelle McCullough, Becky Grafe, Linda West, Diane Welling, and Sally Schmidt SECOND ROW: Nancy Reed, Kris Klingaman, Beth Schweitzer, Dawn Hofacker, Bernice Menapace, Diane Williams, and Zan Harmon. THIRD ROW: Barb Proper, Barb Senior Choir It was quite a thrill to hear the 60 voices of the Dover Senior Choir blending in perfect harmony, and if you attended any of their several performances throughout the 1972-73 school year, you probably came away with a tune ringing in your ears. The entire choir participated in Community Church Services at St. John’s, Grace Lutheran, and Four Square Gospel Church during the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter seasons. If you attended the Choir’s Christmas Concert, you no doubt found yourself getting into the holiday spirit with sounds of Sing We Noel”, How Still, How Still , What You Gonna Call Yo’ Pretty Little Baby”, and others. At the annual Spring Concert you probably found yourself tapping your toes to the beat of “Goin’ Out of My Head”, 5 Nursery Rhymes”, selections from Showboat”, and many more. Dover was the location for Choir Contest this year, which drew 18 choirs from the area competing for those ratings, and a whole day in February was spent at New Phila High School learning techniques and songs from a renowned director, Dr. Ramsey, and presenting the polished numbers to an expectant audience in Alexander, Donna Mastin, Debbie Ream, Barb Burgess, Mark Wert-man, and Chris Farmer. FOURTH ROW: Gretchen Fisher, Marcia Auman, Cheryl Shutt, Steve Specht, Dave Hanner, Gary Yackey, Joe Beasley, and Matt Marks. theevening. You wouldn’t believe the sound that nearly 500 voices could create! As always a large group can break down into smaller talent. Ensembles sang at Memorial Elk Services and received excellent and superior ratings at Contest. Nearly half of the choir members participated in solo contest at Carrollton this year with hard earned and excellent results. Mary Wade, Becky Shryock. Second Row: Linda Weber, Mike Cornelia, Brian Williams. The SWIRL staff began the year by taking charge of the concession stands at the first football game. In another effort to raise money, we also sold mums for the Dover-Phila game. There was not too much work to be done early in the year but by November pictures began coming back and deadlines were to be met. Several of us were late in submitting our layouts for the first deadline but after that we got the hang” of things. Sometimes troubles piled up. For example our student photographer threatened to move to Florida (we finally bought him a one-way ticket) and we lost the first eight pages. Many new projects succeeded this year, but our attempts at sending a war correspondent to Viet Nam proved fruitless. He had trouble hitching a ride. If you are reading this in the SWIRL, we have succeeded in reaching our goal despite numerous setbacks. Thank you for your patience. — Brian Williams Editors — J. D. Dover High School's newspaper, is chiefly a way to keep the student body and faculty in the know of DHS. This year Miss Peeper and staff members have made changes which we feel would be acceptable in making the paper more attractive We’ve changed the look of the newspaper. We cut down on advertising and the size of the paper but we still have more news space which is what we all want. Every year the staff is very conscious of their duty to make the paper unique and new for that year. We feel we have looked at the perspective of creating a wider variety in writing our news as well as supplying both sides to the articles being written. We hope the students and faculty realize that our efforts of putting out the paper are more than just a writing project. We want this “our CRIMSONIAN. to be Dover High School's own news media telling ideals the way we see and hear it. — Beth Straub 51 Senior High Office Kay Kappler, Barb Reynolds. The organization could have been better and ideas could have become a reality if a definite agreement could have been reached. This year we have helped with the Cancer Drive by selling suckers for five cents at the school and down town. In April a State FHA Convention brings FHA’ers from all over Ohio together to exchange and express ideas. At this convention some of our members have the privilege to vote for state officers for FHA, be a hostess, sing in the FHA chorus, act as helper, or just simply be a guest. FHA is not only business, we also have fun; for instance, we had a Christmas party which included a gift exchange. Later in the year, we had a slumber party. A banquet topped off a fabulous year! C.O.E. or Cooperative Office Education, is a work program designed to give the student experience and on-the-job training in a business office. Along with their job, the C.O.E. student receives instructions and practice in class on the various office machines, typing, bookkeeping, and filing to help him do a better job when he’s out on his own. Officers this year are: Jackie Todd — President, Vanessa Thorton — Vice-President, Rachel Schwarm — Secretary, and Lesli King — Treasurer. The C.O.E. Club this year has been very active. We hosted the Regional O.E.A. Convention at Dover High this year. We sponsored Judy Hixenbaugh in the walkathon. To raise money for our annual Employer Appreciation Banquet held May 9,1973 at the Country Club, we sold Tapestry Calendars, Tom Watt's Kits, sponsored a concession stand, and paid class dues monthly to add to the treasury. All in all, it was a very productive year and we hope next year’s club does as well. —Brenda Hall 64 OWE FIRST ROW: Gary Penrod, Jim McKenzie, Rick Tarulli, Guy Dave DiGenova, Mike Johnson, and Doris Espenschied, Berndt, Dave Rosenberry, and Bruce Leggett. Here 18 to 24 boys are actively engaged in an industrial type shop. Modern, full sized equipment and commercial-type jobs help prepare them for industrial employment. Also many maintenance parts are machined and or repaired for the entire school system. These future machinists must also learn blue print reading, trade related math, and machine technology. The results of the Ohio Machine Trades Achievement Tests, given state wide, show that our shop boys consistently achieved higher than 75% of the Vocational students throughout the state. —Ron Maurer FIRST ROW: Bill Jackson. Nevertheless being such a huge distance away from everything you had ever known can be a shaking up. I was able to settle in very quickly though, through the great friendliness and help of my first family and from all the teachers and kids I have come into contact with at school. Dover High School is very different for me from the girls boarding school I used to attend. It is quite a change not having to wear a strict regulation uniform with hair braided If it is below the collar. I have only been here three months, but I have already settled in well, met some great people, and made some good friends. I hope the rest of my stay will be as enjoyable as my first few months and I want to thank everyone who has helped the lost kangaroo who speaks Australian” settle into Dover High. —Diana McRobbie— (Australia) This year here in the U. S. has been most enjoyable. I have never done, learned, and seen so much! To many people I got to know here, I am just another exchange student, but for me, this experience means so much I couldn’t tell! I know that after I go back, as the time goes by, many of the things that happened here will be forgotten, but never will I forget this year as a total, and never will I forget the things I learned. Being an exchange student was certainly one of the best things that could ever have happened to me and I am glad and thankful for having lived in so nice a place as Dover! —Caio Machado— (Brazil) Dear Students, First of all, I would like to thank everyone who has made this year an unforgettable year of my life. As the time passes by, and the memories fade away, this year will be remembered as a fresh rose in my mind. In the past ten months I have met so many nice and friendly people that I had never met before. Of all the persons I have met in my life, Americans are the friendliest. I felt that even though I was away from home, I was at home. The time I had at school was just great. The cooperation and friendliness which I got from the students have made this year the most memorable one of my life. Coach Tom Connor found the right combination this year and came up with one. The Dover Basketball team finished with a 10-8 record while experiencing a few “tough breaks.” Despite four one-point losses, Dover still broke long standing records. This year, we defeated New Phila twice which was the first time in 13 years. Also, we defeated once beaten Claymont, who at that time was ranked 12th in the state. We beat Mansfield Malabar on their home court by 41 points, and I don’t have to mention what we did to Coshocton! Scott Whetstone and Brad Hall received Honorable Mention on the All-Ohio team. It then started to go down hill until 1967 when Coach Tom Connor came to Dover. Since then, Dover Basketball has been working its way back up, and this year Dover had its best season in 11 years. From my years as a manager, I've come to know Coach Connor as a man dedicated to his profession. Jeff Ogletree had the flame of enthusiasm for life, for basketball, and for his friends. Jeff had goals for his life and the ability to reach them. However, for reasons man can’t fathom, God called Jeff. We’ll miss Jeff. We have lost an enthusiastic teammate—Dover High has lost an enthusiastic student—the Dover Community has lost an enthusiastic youth, a youth whosd dreams were left unanswered by tragedy. —Coaches Bill LoPresti and Tom Connor This year our team proved it could play with other teams without being laughed at. I’m proud to have been a part of it. 90 —Jim Lenox— As a senior and a member of the basketball program at Dover for three years, I believe Dover has made great progress. With a winning tradition being reestablished, the future for Dover Basketball looks bright once again. ■ —Scott Whetstone— It was fun following the basketball team this year because of our great winning season and beating Phila twice. —Debbie Arnold— We cracked through the ice this year and brought back a winning season to Dover High School. We accomplished many things during the year, like beating Phila twice, and now it’s up to next year's team to better our record and keep the winning tradition. —Rob Miller- 91 Reserves FRONT ROW: Van Harmon, Matt Stephens, Dean Richards, Bob ROW: Tom Keener, Scott Diamond, Scott Murphy, Mr. LoPresti, Burgess, Joe Goodwin, Todd Whetstone, Steve Struhar. Coach Bill LoPresti’s reserve basketball team set a new offensive scoring record of 86 points this year against Cardinal Conference foe Mansfield Madison. Their record, overall, was 9-9, but they played much better than their record suggests. Three freshmen also gained experience by frequently playing in the reserve contests. The Eastern-Southeastern Districts were once again plagued by a powerful, and seemingly annual tornado, as Mowrey’s Mighty Maulers roared through another undefeated season — sweeping virtually every tournament laurel in sight and hammering such local juggernauts as Coshocton, Carrollton, Steubenville and Claymont. Undefeated Bill Page and Mike Bleininger led the rampage and Joe Bleininger, Larry Kuemerle, Ron Maurer and Tim Hendrix chipped in with phenomenal records. Phila fell, the Cardinal Conference Championship was claimed, even the second liners got into the act by dumping Riverview’s grapplers and the season was a great success through pride, superb team effort, the always necessary hard work and dedicated coaching. Dover’s widely respected mat mentor, Mr. Paul Mowrey, claimed a singular honor this campaign when his tough Tornadoes presented him with his 100th coaching victory at Dover. With 100 already scored at a previous post, Nordonia Hills High School, the COACH is truly one of a kind in national wrestling circles. We lost a lot of talent through graduation last year and nobody expected us to do much, but we spent a lot of time practicing in the gym and it has paid off. We also had many things to work for this year; first of all there was the C.C. Championship race which we won, the State Tournaments, which we lost to Steubenville in the sectional championship game, and the Dover Invitational Tournament which was tried for the first time. —Rob Miller The outlook at the beginning of the year was definitely bleak. At the conference coaches' meeting, we were picked for last place. But we never quit. The team had pride, hustle, and determination. As the season progressed, the team came quite a long way. We finished with a 19-5 record as Cardinal Conference Champs and runners-up in the sectional. The season was a pleasant surprise, but to the guys on the team it was really no surprise, since lots of hard work and dedication made it possible. 101 Scott Whetstone Above: Bob Owens 102 Reserves: FRONT: Randy Fox. It was a young team, seasoned with a few very talented veterans, that placed fourth in a field of sixteen teams at the district track meet in Lancaster, Ohio. The track team’s star performers were Tom Zifer, Mark Keener, and Joe Kopec, with sophomores Jeff Mills and Gil Maize doing exceptionally well. But no doubt the most outstanding features of the team were the enthusiasm and team spirit that prevailed throughout the season. Truly, track is reaching new heights at Dover and this team has played an important part in this ascent. —Robert Wise, Track Coach Tom Zifer in his stride just before releasing the discus. The overall record of 15-7 includes the defeating of such schools as Canton Lehman, John Glenn, and Canton Central Catholic. All three of these teams are very strong but could not handle the Dover Golf Course. Steve Frey and Andy Chapman had the best averages for the year. Andy was also top-point man on the team. Bob Hanner got the best putter award with 15.2 putts per round. The Dover golfers have room for improvement and are looking forward to next year's season which should be a good one. —Mike Cornelia Steve Frey blasts out of a sand trap onto the green. Swim The 1972-73 season proved to be a very productive one for the Big Orange Swimmers from the Tuscarawas County Y.M.C.A. The Intermediate team (15-18) splashed their way to a very impressive 12-3 record with two of the losses coming at the hands of perennial Cardinal Conference powerhouse, Wooster High. Along with their fine record, the tankers also finished 1st in the Northeast Ohio League, 1st in the NEO District by an overwhelming 300 points, and 7th in the Great Lakes Regional consisting of teams from Ohio, Michigan, and West Virginia. Other high points from this season were 1st place at the Marietta Relays, 2nd at the Youngstown Relays, and 3rd place finish at the Kettering Invitational. The local Y.M.C.A. was also represented this year at the National Swimming and Diving Championships in Ft. Lauderdale by Senior Co-capt. Dave Hanhart, Jaf Maize, and Mike Cornelia. Next season promises to be even more productive as the tankers graduate only four seniors while several strong swimmers will be moving up from the Junior Team. Without the help of the Pep Club this year, it was difficult to arouse the spirit at DHS. Instead of having many pep assemblies, we decided to make the teams “Good Luck” cakes and cookies for each game and we would put up signs and decorate the locker rooms. We often wondered if they really appreciated the things we did or if they just thanked us to please us. —Lynn Phillips 108 Reserve Seventh KNEELING: Shirley Owens, Kelly Weber, and Becky Arbogast. She was a candy stripe hospital volunteer for several years and spent much time with other service organizations such as Dollars for Scholars and the YMCA Coed-Council. This year she was chairman of the student community canvas to raise funds for Dollars for Scholars. Her dependability is recognized by adults and students who elected her to Student Council, Future Nurses and National Honor Society positions. As president of Future Nurses she directed the group in an active year with both social and career exploration programs. We salute Diane! Everyone appreciates her enthusiasm and attractive personality. In Memory Of Ron Cercone Darkness is powerless before the dawning light. And so it is with death. We have allowed ourselves to think of it as a dark door, but actually it is a radiant bridge spanning the gulf between two worlds. —Norman Vincent Peale GREG ABEL BETH ANDERSON — Medina High 9.10,11; FNA 12; Spanish Club 12; Tri-Hi-Y 12; Y-Teens 12; Girls Track 12. Robin Lieser High School is like trying to sprint thru knee-deep water. Stef Mathias High School was a hassle and I feel there is too much emphasis on grades. Teachers have too much power. Steve Pruni r Although our senior year was great activity-wise, it really was a waste of time scholastically. Kris Swegheimer I think each individual should have the right to decide on school affairs and problems. Most of the time school officers and student council officers are put in as a joke and they don't really do a good job. I think they should do things in homerooms so everyone has a say in matters. Guests discovered a sidewalk cafe, a wine cellar, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Jane Miceli reigned as queen of the enchanted village with Vicki Schwab and Laurie Dessecker as her attendants. The post prom was at the YMCA for the first time where all the facilities were open, in addition to the playing of Rush. Breakfast at the school ended the celebration. 192 194 Seated in center is Prom Queen Jane Miceli and her Laurie Dessecker and escort Dan Taurlli and Vicki escort Paresh Jariwala. Attendants are (left to right) Schwab with escort Bob Bazzoli. 195 Senior Banquet I think the 1973 Senior Banquet was pretty much of a success. The food was good and the atmosphere was completely different. At first there was quite a bit of friction as to riding school buses out to Atwood, but I think most of the class kind of enjoyed it. The highlight of the banquet had to be the reading of the class history. Being reminded of junior high accomplishments was interesting to everyone. A special interest were the names of past class parties. Were we really that corny? —Linda Burris Class officers Carol Ehrhart, Andy Milton, and Rob Miller enjoy their feast at Atwood. Soul sisters jivin through the food line. After eating, the class makes their way to the buses. 196 Graduation, 1973—Style Imagine our consternation! Graduation was set for the Stadium on June 3 at 8:00 P.M. and only an hour before the time, a terrific hail storm struck. For awhile it was “to be or not to be,” but eventually the sun struggled out and the final show was on. The band played, the red and white robed seniors marched over the green playing field before a standing-room-only and slightly wet stadium. The lights blazed away the dampening gloom of the evening. Finally the band struck up “From These Halls,” 270 former seniors clutched diplomas, and high school days were over. 197 Beth Porter seems to know where she's going. Is the world ready for Tom Kelker?? 198 Donna Comstock Valedictorian Marlene Casiano Salutatorian My years at Dover High School have been by far the happiest years of my life. For the first time, I remained in the same school for more than two years and this allowed me to meet more people and get to know them much better than before. I originally knew only 8 people from my class of nearly 280. I soon made nearly two hundred more close acquaintances before leaving DHS. The encouragement given to me by my teachers and classmates really helped me enjoy attending school, and it was through their inspiration that I was able to accomplish so much during my high school years. —Marlene Casiano What goes Into shaping a life? Certainly school experiences shared with friends go a long way to make a person what he is. I shall remember my experiences and my friends fondly. I don’t know what direction my life will take, but I do know that I had a good beginning, a firm shove in the right direction toward a successful life. Thanks Dover High! —Donna Comstock 199 Alma Mater We lift our voices In praise to thee, Dear Dover High, | Thy gray and crimson let all men see Floating on high In Vic’trys thrill or In defeat From truth and right we’ll ne’er retreat Fairest Alma Mater, unfurl thy banner fair. May each son and daughter, learn to do and dare. Mem’ries dear we'll cherish of our school days free Dear old Dover High, we’ll always loyal be. Advisor: Mr. Ray Johnston.
