THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1956 PRESENTS THE SUUIRL DOUER HIGH SCHOOL 1 The outward structure of Dover High School does not reveal the numerous activities which are a part of the school year. A day in Dover High School is a period of spiritual, mental, physical, and social growth. Innumerable activities provide experiences that develop leadership, responsibility, service and character. 2 We, the Class of 1956, having completed the years of preparation given us in Dover High School, now recall the items which seem most vivid to us, as we review the events of the school year. The fluttering flag we honor . . . The busy days . . . Impressive assemblies . . . Strains of music as the band practices . . . The soft quiet descending upon the halls and classrooms at the end of a day . . . The flickering lights of the building at night. These we recall. These we remember. 3 CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION pages 5-8 FACULTY pages 9-16 SENIORS pages 17-38 UNDERCLASSMEN pages 39-66 CLUBS pages 67-88 ATHLETICS pages 89-110 ADMINISTRATION Capable Leadership . . . Martha Hiltbrand Historian...................................Betty Lou Jenkins Assembly Representative...................................Jim Dusensberry 18 LEFT TO RIGHT: Miss Mujais, Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Schumaker. REPRESENTATIVE SENIORS Each year the seniors choose two of their classmates as representative senior boy and girl. On the basis of leadership, citizenship, service, character, and personality, the class this year chose Betty Ballard and Jerry Wallick. Betty Ballard Betty, chosen to represent her class as a delegate to Buckeye Girls’ State in her junior year, is again chosen to represent her class because of her leadership ability. Her busy schedule includes membership in Band, Leaders Club, Y-Teens, Future Teachers of America, and National Forensic League. In several of these organizations she holds an office. Because of her outstanding scholastic achievement, she became a member of the National Honor Society in her junior year. Betty also capably directed the prom decorating committee. Betty's service, dependability, and pleasing personality have won the respect of all. Jerry Wallick Jerry, who in a quiet manner reveals a good sense of humor, is very active in athletics and extra-curricular activities. Leading the senior class through a successful year is a large responsibility, but he still finds time to participate in student council functions and to work with the senior assembly committee. During the fall Jerry was a member of the varsity football squad, and now he actively participates in the intramural program. Besides all of these activities, Jerry is an excellent student, having received membership in the National Honor Society in his junior year. Because Jerry fulfills the objectives, character, leadership, scholarship, and service, he was chosen to be a representative senior. We of the class of -1956 would like to wish Betty and Jerry success for the future in whatever they may endeavor. Throughout its high school years this class has been led successfully in every project that was undertaken. Through the efforts of this class some additions have been made to the school, including the P.A. system in the auditorium, and a monetary contribution toward the new risers for the stage. Each member of this class has grown spiritually, mentally, physically, and socially through his participation in this process—education. The hard work of this class in the search for an education was counterbalanced by extracurricular activities, the varsity sports and the intramural sports, the plays and dances, and fun of doing things together. Just as each member of the class did not choose the same subjects to study, each member will not choose the same occupation. As they travel'their separate ways, they will not forget that they were members of the class of 1956. UNDERCLASSMEN Busy years ahead . . . Studying . . . Learning . . . Class elections and parties. GRADE Since the seventh graders needed the first semester to become acquainted with each other, their teachers, and the school itself, they did not elect their class officers until the end of the first semester. Their big step was made easier by having fewer class changes than the upperclassmen had. As the big social event of their first year in junior high, the seventh graders had a class party. This party concluded a year of many unforgettable experiences. Pictured above is a geography class which is typical of the seventh grade and the block system in which they participate. 65 In an office prac class such as this students in the busin course learn to op ate various types office equipment. I these methods they ai better prepared t enter office jobs whe they graduate. Machine shop work prepares the boys of the vocational course for entering the industrial world upon graduation. These boys are taught responsibility and safety which will prove to be vital assets to them in the future. 66 Service for others . . . Election of officers . . . Induction . . . Meetings . . . DICK GUMMERE ALEX HUTRAS FRANK HOLLINGSWORTH JOHN KASTOR Senior Senior Senior Senior These four seniors, through their ability, ambition, and spirit, proved themselves worthy gridiron stalwarts for the Tornadoes this year. Their blocking and tackling helped many Tornado causes, not only this year but for the last several years. Dover opened the 1955 season by meeting the Wooster Generals. Wooster was ahead 13 to 6, when Dover marched 73 yards for a touchdown but missed the extra point. The game ended with the score Wooster 13, Dover 1 2. 91 The Tornadoes traveled to Uhrichsville for their first victory of the season. Grafe and Lowery each scored two touchdowns, while Dover's defense held the Tigers to only one first down. Final score Dover 27, Uhrichsville 0. The first game of the season played in Crater Stadium was a victory over the Cambridge Bobcats. Final score Dover 32, Cambridge 26. BERNIE LEDERMAN Senior JERRY WAUICK Senior DAN McGREW Senior These four Seniors pictured below proved to be good forward wall stabilizers in their careers as Crimson Tornadoes. Their ability and determination were felt by many Tornado opponents. DON PACKER Senior LARRY SMITH Senior PETE SHQUGH Senior JOE LOWERY Junior JIM HELLER Junior The value of these back-field men has been immeasurable during the past season. Their deceptive and fleet-footed actions accounted for a large part of the yardage gained by the Tornadoes of Dover High. mi ■■■■■■■ On October 14 the Lancaster Golden Gales proved to be too much for the Tornadoes. The final score was Lancaster 27, Dover 7. The Dover squad played their second C.O.L. game and lost to the Zanesville Blue Devils. The final score was Zanesville 26, Dover 0. 93 October 27 was Dad's Night and the Tornadoes showed their fathers how football should be played by defeating Marietta. The The final score was Dover 27, Marietta 7. The Chillicothe Cavaliers handed the Tornadoes their third straight defeat. Chilli-cothe's lightning-like dashes were too much for Dover. Final score Chillicothe 26, Dover 7. Their diligence and hard work were big factors for the Tornadoes already this year. Newark's tough line seemed to be too much for Dover. Dover surpassed Newark on the land by 30 yards, but couldn’t do anything in the air. Injuries hurt the Tornadoes with Winters and Grafe sitting on the bench part of the game. The game ended with the score Newark 27, Dover 9. 95 Dover ended the league play by defeating the Coshocton Redskins. Hutras, Shough, Lowery, and Link scored the touchdowns with Grafe making the extra points. The final score was Dover 28, Coshocton 0. ROLAND WINZEk Sophomore LARRY McKEE Sophomore CHARLES DAVIS Sophomore As Sophomores, these four lads showed great promise this year. The future should hold, great achievement for them as Tornadoes. Their determination never fails. TOM WENDLING Sophomore JOE LINK Sophomore BOB WINKLER Sophomore EMERSON BEERY Sophomore MIKE FRESCKI Sophomore With the improvement displayed by these Sophomores during the past season, they are sure to be big factors in future Tornado football teams. They will be depended upon extensively. For the first time the bat will make a journey to Dover. The Tornadoes whipped the Phila Quakers 34-20, thus ending Philo’s seven game winning streak. The Dover lads played a brand of football they had not shown previously. Parties . . . Prom . . . Dances . . . Fellowship. “MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS” As shown by this picture the student body was behind the team one hundred per cent, encouraging great enthusiasm and fine sportsmanship. Good luck and may the better team win. As the score showed at the end of the game, the better team won . . . A good beginning . . . . Teamwork was evident throughout the entire week of the Dover-Phila game. This is especially evident by the Bonfire which raised the enthusiasm of the Dover High student body before the big game. An air of friendliness was created by the exchange of co-captains and cheerleaders before the most important game of the year. 126 DOVER 34 PHILA 20 From the looks on these happy faces everyone was more than willing to play the fight songs and to boost the spirit of all. The symbol of fine teamwork. The bat was returned to its proper place in the Dover High trophy case. makes a better ending . . . 127 That must have been a good play judging from the smile on Nick's face. They're really happy over that touchdown that was just made. These gals really showed spirit and enthusiasm that night. IN A JAPANESE GARDEN This was a fine prom as shown by the smiles on the faces of the dancers during intermission. How romantic it must be to look into a real pool of water at such a lovely dance. This is a scene of the Japanese Garden. Many long hours of hard work were endured to make this beautiful end product. The joyous conversation was probably about the sparkling water fountain or the delicate tea garden in the background. 128 ,Vv: . 'U ' v-v, ' - .■'T C ' -X 5 v _ •-• 2 Uj SStS } ? . WC.- A .
