T HC SENIORS 98 ? PRCSCNT FOREWORD We, the 1952 graduating class of Dover High School, present the latest edition of the Swirl. It has been the primary objective of the staff to have this book recall friendships and enable students to relive the memorable experiences they had in Dover High. Along with this, we have endeavored to attain for this Swirl a position which will be creditable to the Class of '52 and to Dover High School. 31 0 CONTENTS Foreword Dedication Administration and Faculty Seniors .... These experiences represent the hopes and sacrifices of our parents and this community. Plans have been made and fulfilled to provide churches, recreational facilities and schools. In school we learn to better ourselves through education, by accepting responsibilities, and by association with fellow students and teachers. Our teachers and counselors are responsible for imbedding the necessary inspirations in our minds to insure our success. The staff, in honest gratitude, dedicates this Swirl of 1952 to that with which we have been so generously provided—that, which accepted, is the basis for success —Opportunity. 4 Knowledge Supreme. Evelyn Bitticker Judith Rinehart SENIOR CLASS ADVISORS Mr. Savage, Miss Kneubuehl, Miss Ellet, Miss Beach, Mr. Harvey Found in Senior Hall Following the custom set by previous Senior Classes, we have chosen two students to serve as representatives of the Class of 1952. Janet Studer has been active in different clubs, a member of the A Cappella Choir, and a faithful helper in the Attendance and General Offices. Her friendly ways and ready assistance will always be remembered by her class mates. In Janet's Junior year she was chosen as our representative to Buckeye Girls' State and she holds the vicepresidency of the Senior Class. As Janet continues her education in college and her career in after life, we feel she will never fail to remain a fine representative of our class. REPRESENTATIVE SENIORS Jake Lengler, popular Senior boy, has been chosen as representative of his class for his co-operative attitude and his friendliness to all. Jake has been outstanding in both the scholastic and extra-curricular fields. In his Sophomore year, Jake, as president, led his class through a successful term ,and, as a Junior, he was elected to attend Buckeye Boys' State. Also during his Junior year Jake was chosen to be a member of the National Honor Society. He is a member of the Senior Hi-Y, vice-president of the Stage Crew and soorts editor of the Crimsonian and the Swirl. As a Tornado eager, Jake has received wide-spread recognition. He also played his position of halfback on the football squad very capably. We wish Jake the very best. 17 117 In All Entered ALPETER, JOAN BUSINESS Attendance Office Help 10; General Office Help II; Girls' Intramurals 9; Orchestra 9, 10; Usher Club II, 12. Dover's Crimson Tornadoes looked exceptionally good as they romped over Wellsville 33-6 at Crater Stadium. Carrico was outstanding for the Crimsons os he displayed elusive running abilities. Tom Armstrong witnessed his first Tornado football game os assistant coach. Dover displayed promise for tho season. UHRICHSVILLE—Sept. 21. Sparked by Frank Ellwood, Dover quarterback, the Tornadoes smashed Urhrichsville 26-0. The heralded Tiger aerial attack never had a chance to get started as the driving Tornadoes struck for two touchdowns in the second quarter. 3,000 spectators in the Bengal stadium failed to see the home team score as Furboy's eleven dominated play in the last three periods. WOOSTER—Oct. 5. With Frank Ellwood once again sparking the Tornado attack, the Crimsons blasted Wooster 33-7 at Maurer Field. It was Ellwood, Bobby Jones, and little Jake Lengler, along with the Tornado line, that kept the Gene'als off balance all night. Jones, 134 pound halfback, electrized the crowd os he raced 66 yards for Dover's second touchdown. Nine Tornado backs continually riddled Wooster's defense. AKRON NORTH —Sept. 28. With Bud Lahmers, brilliant Tornado lineman, intercepting a Viking pass in the last 10 seconds of the game, the Tornadoes emerged with a 21-14 victory at Crater Stadium. Dover's passing attack sparkled that night as a total of 102 yards were gained on 8 completions. As was expected. North's Pignafelli and Vince-guerra we-e the mainstays for the losers. Tornado ends, Jake Lengler, Jim Kearns, and Dick McCombs played an outstanding game. MARIETTA—Oct. 12. A crowd of 3,000 watched as Dover scored its fifth straight win. Crater Stadium was the scone of some spectacular running by Jim Carrico, who, in the second quarter, pulled the Tornadoes from the short end of a 12-6 count by returning a kick-off for 93 yards and a touchdown. The Crimsons gained a total of 388 yards to 185 for the Tigers. Scoring three touchdowns in the final period, the Tornadoes emerged with a 38-18 victory. Dick McCombs Bud Lahmers Co-Cap+ains MANSFIELD MADISON—Oct. 19. The Dads of the Dover Tornado gridders were presented with a 39-0 victory over the Mansfield Madison Rams at the annual Dad's Night festivities. The Mansfield Roms were completely outclassed as the statistics showed a total of 298 yards gained for the Tornadoes and only 40 yards for the Rams. Bud Lahmers and Lloyd Hagloch led the Tornado line to a banner night of defensive play. CAMBRIDGE—Nov. 2. On this cold Friday night in November the Tornado gridders had two powerful olemonts to conquer. One was the potent Bobcats; the other was the weather. Old Man Winter made a dramatic entrance at Crater Stadium to provide one of the worst football evenings in Tornado grid history. The punting of Frank Ellwood and the great goal line stand by the Tornado line were the two outstanding factors in the hard-fought 12-6 victory for the Tornadoes. COSHOCTON—Oct. 25. Although the Tornado team was not up to par, it finally emerged with a 27-21 victory over the battling Coshocton Redskins on the loser's field. Trailing at the half 7-6, the Tornadoes come back strong in the second half with Carrico sparking the final drive. It was climaxed by a touchdown in the last two minutes by Dover quarterback, Frank Ellwood. SALEM—Nov. 9. Striking through the air as well as on the ground, the fighting Tornadoes edged Salem 26-21 for their ninth consecutive win. The Tornadoes were forced to come from behind twice to subdue the stubborn Quaker team. Tho passing arm of Ellwood and the running of Jerry Kreighbaum spelled defeat for the rugged Quakers. Dick McCombs, Tornado end, also ployed this position brilliantly. NEW PHILADELPHIA-Nov. 16. For nine long weeks the Dover Tornadoes indulged in the fine art of defeating their opponents. But all good things must come to an end. Before 6,000 fans at Crater Stadium, the New Phila Quakers closed the door on Dover's hopes of an undefeated season. Dottie Richards and Sam Miller led the 25-7 rout of the Crimsons. The shattered Crimsons were completely and decisively subdued by the spirited Quaker squad. 77 Ability....Sportsmanship JIM CARRICO HALFBACK 155 Lbs.—Senior DICK GLOVER TACKLE 215 lbs.—Senior JIM MEARS GUARD 155 lbs.—Senior Swamp Madison 39-0 Dover's Tornadoes, playing ex-ulosive but spott- football before 2.300 fans, smallest crowd of the season rolled to their sixth straight victory of the campaign Friday night at Crater Stadium, a 39 - 0 win over unimpressive Mansfield Madison. Kent Stahley, Lancaster’s lone letterman and a 5-11 senior, was assigned to Leng-ler and kept the Doverite star S in check during the first period when the Tornadoes scored only one basket but meshed six fouls. THE SEASON IN REVIEW Approximately 35 candidates were on hand for the initial track practice of the 1951 season. Forming the nucleus of Coach Don Campbell's squad were Lonnie Dillard, Jim Carrico, Jim Kearns, Sonny Hess, Franklin Ellwood, Bob Sewell, and Edwin Mathias. The Tornado thinclads scored their lone victory over the Dennison Railroaders. Outstanding for the Tornadoes in the 1951 season was Jim Carrico who placed second in the 220 yard dash at the Uhrichsville District Meet. This qualified Jim for the state meet, a great honor. Carrico was also high scorer for the Tornado squad. Other high scorers were Jim Kearns, outstanding hurdler, Frank Ellwood, discus and dash man, Bob Sewell, fine middle distance runner, Ed Mathias, distance man, and Lonnie Dillard, shot-putter and sprinter. The first meet of the season was a triangular event with Strasburg, and Millersburg. The Tornado cindermen were edged by a spirited Millersburg Spartan squad 60 to 58 with Strasburg bringing up the rear with 31 points. The remainder of the season was comprised of dual-meets with Dennison, Wooster, Uhrichsville. New Philadelphia and Cambridge. Dover also participated in the Wooster Night Relays, the Uhrichsville Invitational, and the Eastern Ohio District Meet at Uhrichsville. We shall all remember Don Campbell, a man who did great things for track as well as football and basketball in D.H.S. He not only coached the boys to be good sports; he himself set a fine example. Let's hope that the interest in track created by Don Campbell will continue through the years. don Campbell 90 Noon Time Notoriety........
