We have attempted to include events and activities, which you will enjoy recalling in later years. “Swirl” symbolizes the action of the always swirling tornado, the school’s sports symbol, as well as the swirl of activities throughout high school. On the following pages you will find pictures of your teachers, your social activities, your clubs, your sports, and your friends. The annual staff hopes you will have happy times looking through this 1949 annual. Editors... .Glennamae Klein, Dill Goodwin Business Managers..........John Kncubuchl. Page 110-120 In Appreciation We, the Senior Class of 1949, dedicate this annual to the Dover High School Faculty, who, with their ability and helpfulness, led us through six years of joyous school life. We have gained our education, many friendships, a feeling of cooperation, and a good spirit, in the years we spent in Dover High School. We look upon the faculty, not only as teachers, but also, as our friends. We dedicate the ’49 Swirl to them, as a small token of our appreciation for all they have done for us. 7 Dover Board of Education Standing: Mr. Delmar C. Lemmon, Superintendent; Mr. Herbert H. SEASON HISTORY With a card marked with five wins and five losses the Crimson and Gray grid-ders of Dover High completed another rugged season. On September 17 the Tornadoes opened their season against Fremont Ross, a power packed single wing team, which humbled the Doverites 33-7. One week later the Tornadoes played the Uhrichsville Tigers on Crater Field and blew the Tigers down under, to the tune of 39-0. The following week the Tornadoes met the Wooster Generals, a light, but fast, eleven. Dover finally downed them on Crater Field with the game ending 20-19. On October 8 the Tornadoes took to the road on their first C.O.L. game. It carried them down to the banks of the Ohio and Marietta, where they trimmed the Tigers’ tails. Following their victory over Marietta they traveled to Newark, an always powerful opponent, and were beaten 28-14, but not without a thrilling battle. October 22 found the Tornadoes back at Crater Field playing, and defeating, a highly praised Coshocton eleven. The next week Dover played Cambridge, there, and finally defeated them in the fourth quarter 19-0 after a very slow start on a wet field. November 5 found the Tornadoes playing host to Zanesville and being beaten by their guests. Lancaster was next in line for the D. H. S. gridders, who went there and lost, only after a hard fought game that had the Lancaster fans breathless, the last seconds of the game. The game ended 19-14 in favor of Lancaster. The traditional rivalry game between the Tornadoes and the New Phila Quakers was played Nov. 19 at Quaker Stadium with Dover bowing to the Quakers 12-7. Coach Furbay — In his eight years as head mentor at D. H. S. he has molded teams that have always been dangerous in C. O. L. competition. It was formed in the hope that the younger boys would receive more experience before advancing to the varsity. It played only a few games this year because of its rather late organiation. The boys really showed they had the stuff that it takes, when they scrimmaged against the varsity, and that was pretty often. Their coach, Mr. Heller, was also new to Dover High School, coming here from Seville, where he had coached two years. His record was a good one there, as he had formed the first eleven man football team that town had. Bob is well liked by the members of the Varsity, Sophomore and Jr. Reserve squads, as well as all the others who know him. We wish him luck with his squad in the coming years and know that he will do his best to make it a credit to Dover High School. Coach Heller Mgrs. Busby, Patton, Meese Soc Space U2 lb.; 5 ft. 7 in. We find John Kneubuehl as master of ceremonies on the Bob Hope show. Norma Pietro is living in luxury from the royalties on her latest book of poems, “Sands of Saturn.” Kenny Watson went to New York and made good. He peddles flowers in Central Park. Ellen Sewell is director of physical education at Ohio State, with Janet Pope and Jean Poston as her assistants. Jerry Ripnle has charge of a Children’s Hospital in Hawaii. Ruth Stabler and Gero-line Wise have proved to the world, beyond doubt, that they can be happy, though married. Ray Rieger is now mayor in Dover and is assisted by his wife, Betty Sigenthaler. Glenn Septer is the leading surgeon in a big hospital on the west coast. Last, but definitely not least, we find Melda Zimmerman and Eleanor Rufqpor connected with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. We return to our starting place and leave this illustrious class, which we have found to be scattered all over the world. I IK s£Sr
