And so, as we look ahead to the future we must also look back upon the past. fAnd we certainly were a swinging classll The pendulum was set in motion by the election of our freshman class offi- cers with Bob Nesman as president, Phil Grimes Vice-president, Janet Gray secretary, and Marcia Bohan treasurer. These four were an ideal choice as they were instrumental in getting us into the swing of things. Even as lowly freshmen we demonstrated our talent for originality by the execution ofa class poll. As the fall season continued the Class of '60' showed its drive by having the largest turnout of students from the high school in our national elections. For the first time at Dover High, representatives from the Frosh Civics classes made a trip to the Concord state house to observe the procedures of the State Government. The freshman football team started a trend by winning all the games on their schedule for the first time in six years. The success at the Dartmouth Debate Tournament of the freshman novice debators, Esther Anne Suosso and Nikki Markos, prophesied many further honors for the Forensic Club. Our class was also well represented at the New England Speech and Debate Tournament by four able freshmen, Leslie Smith, Esther Anne Suosso, John McCooey, and John Peltonen. To successfully round out our freshman year Barbara Carter and John Peltonen achieved the honor of making all state band and orchestra. As the pendulum swung into the second quadrant of its arc we elected the class officers for our sophomore year. President was Tom Ca sh, vice-president Phil Grimes, secretary Janet Gray, and Marcia Bohan treasurer. These class officers proved themselves worthy of our vote by the wonderful iob they did in obtaining a bus to take us to the football game. On the football field, on the baseball diamond, and on the basketball court Tom Cash demonstrated his athletic ability by making first string varsity in all of these. He also received honorable mention from All State Football. ln the annual Perkin's Prize Speaking Contest honors were brought to our class by Leslie Smith who placed first and Esther Anne Suosso who placed second. These two along with two other members of Dover High brought Satur- day morning enioyment to us through the Green Rave radio program Green Wave Takes to the Air. Our representative at the New En land Tournament was continued by the same four who attended it in their fresfmman ear. In the State Speech Contest Esther Anne Suosso placed second in originalloratory and John McCooey placed third in impromptu. Esther Anne Suosso again showed her versatile ability in speech and dra- matics by holding the lead in the annual Encore Club play with Bob McGillen holding the male lead. The winter of 1958 brought to our list of awards the title of inter-class basketball champions. 60 Many members of the Class of '60' were elected to fill the offs- es of their clubs for the following year. As the pendulum entered its upward swing and so symbolized our rise to the status of upper classmen, we accepted our responsibility as such by electing as class officers, Bill French president, Phil Grimes vice-president, Barbara Carter secretary, and Marcia Bohan treasurer, to guide us through the diffi- culties of our iunior year. Their first duty was to look into the possibility of acquiring class rings earlier than usual. A new style was chosen, one which would remain for five years. The rings were to arrive during the winter. A great honor was bestowed upon our class when Tom Cash was selected for All State. Also several boys from our class were on the varsity football and basketball teams. To back the boys up, three iunior girls were active members of the varsity cheerleading squad. ln an effort to revive the school spirit we began a program which we entitled Wake Up Before School Spirit Dies Week. This proved to be an overwhelming success, especially when we had the Day of Mourning. Once again we displayed our enthusiasm as a class by sponsoring a cloth- ing drive. Competition was set up between the classes, and of course, we won. Another drive was held in our senior year with the hope that it would be equally successful. During the winter the annual Perkin's Prize Speaking Contest was held and first prize was awarded to Dale Baxter and second prize was given to Esther Anne Suosso. As the Carnival Bull rolled around once again there was a note of excitement and mystery as to who would be selected to reign over the week's activities. To the satisfaction of all, Kay Harper, a member of our class, was chosen as queen. Carnival Week proved to be quite successful and will long be remembered by all who participated in the week's activities. There are many facets to the honors our class has won, and the students at the Vocational School did their share in contributing. The following won first prizes at the New Hampshire Industrial Arts Fair held at Claremont, Richard Bois, Melvin Ro ers, John Tibbetts, and Ray McKenna. Second prize was won by Foster Bedelf. Durin our iunior year many acclamations were received by the debators. John McCooey won a debate scholarship at U. N. H. and was New England delegate to the National Speech and Debate Tournament held in Florida. At State, Esther Anne Suosso took second place in girls' extemp and John Peltonen was awarded third prize for original oratory. At lastlll The long-awaited class rings finally arrived, and for the next few da s we proudly displayed them to the underclassmen and even had the audacity to brag about them to the seniors. But bragging can't be considered too extreme. After all, we did set the pace for the new style in class rings at D.H.S. With the advent of spring came the preparation for the departure of the seniors. Naturally the offices vacated by the outgoing seniors had to be filled by our classmates. And so Phil Grimes was elected president of the Student 61 Council and Bob Stone was chosen as vice-president. Anne Meserve was elected president of the G.A.A. Next on the agenda was the election and induction of the new members of National Honor Society. Nine iuniors were invited to ioin. They were, Phil Grimes, Bill French, John Casey, John Peltonen, Leslie Smith, Nikki Markos, Marcia Bohan, Barbara Carter, and Esther Anne Suosso. The highlight of our iunior year was the sponsoring of the Junior Prom. Our class worked diligently to make it the best ever. We may be iust a little preju- diced, but we think it was quite good. We hoped it would be one the seniors would long remember. Will we ever forget that last assembly when, amid showers of confetti, those immortal words, Next year's seniors leave first! were spoken? Summer vacation is something that is eagerly anticipated every year, and iunior year was no exception. When the dismissal bell was rung on that last day of school in June, outbursts of cheers could be heard from one end of the school to the other. During this vacation Bill French, John Casey, John Peltonen, Fred Fernald, Tom Cash, Walt Savitch, Marc Dion, and Phil Grimes represented Dover High at Boys' State while Marcia Bohan participated in Girls State. John Peltonen received the special honor of proceeding to Boys' Nation. Also during the summer Phil Grimes and John Peltonen represented Key Club of D.H.S. in Canada at the International Key Club convention. lt seemed that we were iust becoming accustomed to the carefree life, as we were oblivious of school routine, when, once again we were called upon to return. But this year would be like no other! lt was a long, tedious battle, but as the pendulum finally reached the height of its arc we became seniors. We were determined to start the most memorable of all years off on the right foot by choosing competent and skillful leaders as our class officers. lt was a vigorous campaign, and the four emerging victorious were Bill French,President, Bob Nesman, Vice-President, Janice Huntress, Treasurer, and Kay Harper, Secretary. The very first task to pursue was the taking of the senior class pictures. The pictures were done to the satisfaction of all by the Purdy Studios, Inc., and were received in time for Christmas. Next on the list of the many and diversified activities of senior year was the planning of the class trip. lt was decided that payments would be made in installments of ten dollars a month. This idea was readily accepted by everyone, and quite a few indicated interest in taking the trip. Nancy Christiansen and Phil Grimes represented D.H.S. at the Governors Conference on youth. One of the most important duties of senior year is the publishing ofthe Profile, our school yearbook. Leslie Smith was elected editor of this year's edition, and Carole Krikes assistant editor. The editorship of the school news- paper has rested in the capable hands of Kate Caswell. Also in the field of iournalism, Fa Williams and Dale Baxter were chosen as co-editors of the Green Banner, Saver High's contribution to the local newspaper. 62 Synonomous with the fall term is the Harvest Dance, the first maior social event of our senior year. Gracing the scene as queen was Janice Huntress. Completing the picture were the four aides, Judy Morrison, Sharon Brierly, Kate Caswell, and Kay Harper. Athletically speaking, our final year at D.H.S. measured up to the great expectations foreshadowed in previous years. Once a ain, to the delight of all, Tom Cash made All-State. Proud recipiants of football awards were, Roland Houde, most valuable player, Roger Turgeon, and Al Goodwin, most devoted players, and Richard Bois, best defensive back. At a school assembly Tom Cash received the Herbert Ayer Trophy and Bob Dearbon the Vatistas Trophy. One of the most important jobs of the senior class together with the faculty is to select a member of the class to receive the D.A.R. citizenship award from the Marjorie Sullivan Chapter. We all feel that we made a wise decision in choosing Leslie Smith, for she has always been an outstanding member of the Class of '60'. The two service clubs were efficiently presided over by Marcia Bohan of Tri-Hi-Y, and Phil Grimes in Key Club. The two remaining offices of the Student Council were occupied by Bonnie Upton as secretary, and Linda Carswell as treasurer. Since the senior year is always an expensive proposition, especially for the male population, they were relieved of their social responsibility by the institution of Merp Week. For the third consecutive time, members of our class took two out of the three places in the annual Perkins Prize Speaking Contest, Laurene Dowe received the medal representative of first place while Barbara Carter finished third. More active than ever this year the National Honor Society elected their officers, John Peltonen President, John Casey Vice-President, and Esther Anne Suosso Secretary. This group held a reunion luncheon for the N.H.S. 'members of several previous classes. Another honor was brought to a member of the Class of '60', when Walter Savitch, received a letter of commendation from the Nat'l Merit Scholarship Test. Speaking of scholarships, Les Smith was a finalist in the competition for a B.U. Scholarship as a result of an exceptionally high score on a test in iournal- lsm. Another novel idea conceived by the Class of '60' was the employment of several Sergeants in Arms for the sole purpose of the preservation of one of the few privileges alloted to us as seniors. After all, underclassmen, seniors should have the unchallenged right of leaving all assemblies first! As the pendulum climaxes its upward swing and so terminates four of the best years of our lives we are able to look back on such unforgettable events as the Junior Prom, the class trip, the senior class banquet, and the commence- ment activities. When I asked Les for our first date. When I began to introduce a girl to my parents and I didn't know her last name. When I tried to flip a pancake, itlanded on my face. The day I asked for directions to room T03 I ended up in the boys' basement. The time I sang a solo by mistake in Choraliers. The rainy morning I walked to school and there wasn't any. One time while in Sawyer's Outlet I coughed and my false teeth fell out. When I fell asleep in one of my study halls the teacher woke me up and made me sleep on his desk. When I went to turn off the lights in the school office and accidently pulled the fire alarm. The day someone hung my tights from the gym balcony. When due to circumstances beyond my control I couldn't stop laughing in Latin. When I slipped on the ice and fell down the front steps of my date's house. When I had to stand up in front of a class for fiveminutes saying nothing while every- one stared in silence. Wlhen a practice teacher told me to stop staring at her while she was talking to the c ass. The time I mistook a penny for a dime and tried to pay a check with it. The time I took a wrong door in a theater and ended up in the men's room. gllhe day in Office Practice when I leaned over to close a window and fell on the oor. The day I was called to the office and was informed my car was on fire. All of themll When I was talking with a friend in the library about a teacher's faults, that teacher was on the other side of the bookshelf. The time I walked to the Prom because my gown wouIdn't fit in the car. When I asked a teacher where the elevator was after being told there was one by an upperclassman. Not being able to remember the most embarrassing moment of my life. The time my father told me he knew I had been disconnecting the speedometer all summer. The time I got 4th period and 4x period mixed up and sat in an empty class for ten minutes. Leslie Haley The time I worked in a history class for ten minutes before I realizedl wasn't in the right class. Judith Hanscome When I hitched the cinch too loose and swung under the horse's stomach. Kay Harper When the zipper popped in the back of my cheering uniform. Whenever I fall up the stairs and there are students around to laugh. A girl gave me a bloody nose. Threeunderclassman girls walked into the locker-room while I was getting dressed for a basketball game. I was asked to play my clarinet S at a party and nothing came out of the horn. I told m biology teacher that I didn't believe that she knew Judo. I was wrong. I was getting up from my chair during fifth period class, and I almost knocked a teacher down. I blurted out, I am sorry, I meant to knock you down. I ran down the stairs, skipping several, only to find Mr. Peltonen at the bottom. I was introducing the main speaker at a banquet and forgot his name. I dropped a banana split on a lady's lap while serving her at work. I was looking for Walt Savitch to work on the Literary Committee and, upon seeing a figure descending the stairs, Iran up loudly pleading Walter, we need you! and it turned out to be Mr. Kazura. I backed my car off a bridge. During the I959 Christmas Concert the quartet started off with four different words to one songl Since there were no men on a train I was riding on I slept in the men's room. I forgot about the porters! While at Great Lakes Training Center we had a fire drill, and I was caught in the showers. One day I wasn't in school, but I met Mr. Knepp at the Friday Night dance. I was caught placing a dissected biology frog on someone's dinner plate. Being sent to the principaI's office. I got the car stuck on a curb stone in the cemetery while taking some flowers to a grave. It came the day I found out Jack had a twin! I went to sit down in detention, but I found there was no seat after I hit the floor. I turned to talk to a friend and found I was talking to a stranger. One Sunday morning I ruined the bumper on the milk truck. I was dancing with a girl, and I got my gum caught in her hair. While walking home one night a flock of pigeons circled overhead. I fell through the ceiling up to Dan's and hung there by my ankles. I've never been embarrassed in my life. One afternoon last yearl happened to be in the Post Office. A little boy of about four, handling a toy gun, looked sharpl up at me and turning to his mother he said in a loud clear voice: That girl looks hke an Indian. When coming to a tollgate, I blithely tossed the money through the car window and watched it sail past the proper receptacle and come to rest on the curb far below. One night I led the basketball team onto the floor and found out nobody followed mel In High School bowling one day I threw the ball into the air allthewaydown to the pins. 97 Junior Prom An Enchanted Evening Soft Lighfs and Dreamy Music Queen Eileen, King John, and Aides 'u- '1 The Royal Couple il f Th 98 is is iheir nigh?
