We are survlvors Conslder the changes we have witnessed For all of us In the Class of 1939 We were born before televislon before penicillin before pollo shots frozen foods Xerox plastic contact lenses Frusbees and the pull We were born before radar credlt cards, split atoms laser beams and ballpoint pens, before pantyhose dishwashers clothes dryers electric blankets alr conditioners drlp dry clothes and before man walked on the moon We got marned flrst and lil Iuved together tHow quaint can you be?l In our ttme closets were for clothes not for comlng out of Bunnies were small rabblts, and rabbuts were not Volkswagens Deslgner jeans were schemlng girls named Jean and havmg a meanlngful relationship meant gettlng along with our cousins We thought fast food was what you ate during Lent and outer space was the back homes We never heard of FM radio, tape decks electronic typewrlters artlflclal hearts word processors yogurt or guys wearing earrings For us time sharing meant togetherness not computers or condomlmums A chlp meant a piece of wood Hardware meant hardware and software wasn t even a word Back then Made ln Japan meant junk and the term making out referred to how you dld on your exam Pnzzas McDonalds and Instant coffees were unheard of We hlt the scene where there were 5 81 10 Cent Stores where you could actually buy thlngs for flve and ten cents' Ice cream cones sold for a nlckel or a dlme For a nlckel you could rlde a street car make a phone call buy a Pepsi or enough stamps to mail one letter and two postcards You could buy a new Chevy coupe for S600 but who could afford one? A plty too because gas was only 11 cents a gallon In our day, grass was mowed, coke was a cold drink, and pot was something you cooked In Rock muslc was grandma s lullaby and alds were helpers In the prlnclpal s offlce at school We were certainly not born before the dufference between the sexes was dnscovered, but we were surely born before sex changes We made do with what we had And we were one of the last generations that was so dumb as to thlnk you needed a husband to have a baby' No wonder we are so confused and there IS such a generation gap today' BUT WE SURVIVED!
