There are goals in the hearts of all Trojans, goals that may be met with smiles and suffer- ing. We've gone through the bad times together wonder- ing where it would all end. Yet it always works to the good of all concerned. 5 Fortunately, the good times outweigh the bad. We have the memories of Douglass in our hearts to cherish forever. We feel the primary purpose of all education is to teach people to think and to be responsi- ble to and for themselves. In order for an education to be meaningful, we must learn to challenge all the things we take for granted, examine all except values and assumptions, and instill the desire to question. Students enrolled in ICE get a total of 4 credits and are also paid by their employers for the work they do. Students work a variety of jobs, depending on their occupational ob- jective - what they want to do when they grow up and get big. Those jobs include secretarial jobs, food service oc- cupations, grocery industry, variety and department stores, and many more. In addition to their' jobs, students join the vocational youth organization, affiliated with the program - VICA. The young people and students of today are often looked down on and criticized to the point of being called irresponsible and self-centered, just to name a few. But look around Douglass High School, what you see will tell an entirely different story. The opportunity is presented for each and every student who will accept the challenge. Many students take advantage of this opportunity by joining clubs and becoming involved in organi- zations and activities that interest them. High School Students are young adults who can accept responsibility, give of themselves and help others mean while. Lack of communication is definitely not a problem here at Douglass. How could we possibly bind together on the battle field and at play if not for communication and togetherness? Communication, as we know, is a most vital concept. without it an existence as we know it couldn't be possible. The unique thing about us however, is how we put that concept to work. Through many activities we show respect for each others views and actions, as only members of a school of our caliber can do. We start every day at Douglass by hearing the members of our announcers club inform us of upcoming activities, messages from administration and counselors, and events we need to plan for. We could not manage without this valuable service. The newspaper and yearbook staffs at Douglass serve the purpose of recording some of these same events and activities for our memories and the enlightenment of future Trojans. They are the true historians of Douglass and without their efforts the great Trojan tradition would not be preserved. The Drama Club at Douglass provides the Trojans with cultural communication and entertainment at assemblies throughout the year. All these groups keep the communication lines open. Decades pass and along with them. everchanging fads and fashion. Every decade has contributed to our pre- sent fashion trend, because without our re- alizing it, the styles we classify as new are without a doubt only former fashions with a new twist. What is fashion? The dictionary describes it as, a mode or current way of dressing. This definition gives the impression that to be in fashion one must wear what everybody else wears and that is not true . . , fashion is how you feel about you, and what side of This year focused on the soft feminine look. A light is leading us into the future which is reaching us ever so fast day by day. Our mode of dressing is making its mark, some how signi- fying our nearing adulthood. The Fashion Trend that is about us now, then, is the spirit of a change, the individual approach, and also the sign of a new beginning. After all isn't fashion a never ending pattern of beginnings? Sophistication cannot be left out by any means. Indeed the new era has brought out a new pride in the way we dress, and a representation of the person we are. While some young women limited their wardrobe to slacks. others continued to wear them in a variety of ways, with varied accesor- ies, and with class, as Sher- ry does here. We now know that everyone has responsibilities, and we are willing to live up to that. As freshmen we were very curious and playful. Now that we know the do's and don'ts. we are able to set examples for our underclassmates as our upper classmates set examples for us. We are aware of the happenings around Douglass and are always getting in- volved in different activities to help keep our school spir- it. As usual, their primary concern has been producing the Ju- nior-Senior Prom. The juniors are responsible for planning and financ- ing this gala event. The Seniors of I98l are making their presence known by their participa- tion in civic and community affairs. This Junior year is important be- cause these students must get ready for their last year in high school. They must make sure that they have taken the courses needed to prepare themselves for college. Aptitude tests can help the juniors know what careers they could per- form best with their skills. ,IN ri,,..S 5 YIM, XF il .Q-A 5 Mr. Fran works with Music Theory Students. They practiced several hours a day in hot temperatures to be ready for the opponents they had to face. Altogether there were twelve starters returning from last year's crop, head- ed by team captains Kerry Madden and Steve Johnson. The team is made up of mainly sen- iors although the sophomores and ju- niors will have their chance to lead the team to victories next year. The team found that their roughest rivalry was with Tulsa Washington where they lost O-62. At the end of the season they ended up winning three of their clashes, over Capital Hill 8-6, Star Spencer 20-I4, and Classen 6I-6. Al- though it ended up as a 3-6 season, the Trojan football team put in everything they had to bring out a spirited foot- ball year. Two new coaches, Phil Ingersoll and Willie Kelley brought a new style of play to the Trojans. They came to Douglass with no starters back from last year. Yet the Trojans played all the top-ranked teams in the state very competitively and beat many of them. The Trojans wore new uniforms and everyone is excited about the basketball program being built from the freshmen, sophomore. JV and Varsity levels. This year the D.H.S. swim team is climbing straight to the top, step by step. The team this year consists of 23 young men, and ladies. They work hard to reach each step closer to the top. You know some people think that just knowing how to swim makes you eligible for the Douglass High School swimming team, But it takes more lt takes hard work and training. People just don't realize the things that a person must go through to be in the swim team. To make the team you have got to work hard and strive to make it. There are a few basic things you should try to know. For instance, the five basic swimming strokes such as: the free style, the butterfly, the breast stroke, the back stroke, and the side stroke. There are a few other things such as learning to dive and to breathe the proper way. And so these are a couple of things that a good swim team should know. And believe it Douglass has one of the best teams not only because of their ability to swim. They have a not-so-secret weapon too. They have the best coach, Coach Elliott. She works hard with her team just to make it a step closer to reaching their Goal. The Top! Wrestlers Gain The Respect They Deserve Wrestlers proved to be fighting TRO- JANS throughout the I979-80 school year. Ending the season with a I2-3 record, Douglass demonstrated its de- termination to be on top. ln the All- City tournament, senior Eddie Rodri- quez. finished with the championship title, wrestling at I57 lbs. Winfred Cof- fee, weighing l78 lbs., came in second place. Taking third was Delance Robin- son, at I68 lbs. and at I3O lbs., Lester Lancaster. Douglass finished fourth behind other competing high schools. Wrestlers also participated in the Clin- ton tournament. Throughout each and every match the Trojans continued to show their determination and will to win. When in times of desperation, the support from fans, parents and Mat Maids seemed to shine through and bring the wrestlers to a victory. As in all sports there were losses. And those losses will be learned from. This team consisted of twenty one membersf each and every wrestler put his all in the winnings of this year. With the loss of five seniors, the remaining wres- tlers will continue to carry out the well deserved reputation of the teams as a whole, and to keep Douglass on top. Baseball played in the spring and Softball in the fall both play a big part in the Douglass Terri- tory. The baseball team has two returning let- termen. But with all the great potential in the newcomers it will be a sure bet for a winning season. The Trojettes stuck together during ups and downs. Friendships grew and the help and un- derstanding of Mrs, Alexander helped them to work together for a great season. The season ended with 9 wins and 5 losses. A 2nd place in city was well earned by them. They defeated strong hitting teams to the end. Softball if 1 . What's new at DHS? The soccer team and golf teams are the latest members of Trojan sports. This makes the third year to have a golf team and the second year to have a soccer team. The soccer team competes with other schools who have organized a soccer team. The golf team competes in tournaments throughout the area. Both teams hope that in the future Trojans will take a bigger interest in these sports.
