For many years to come, may it be a torch, lighting our pathways of lifeg a lift, bringing joy and satisfaction to our hearts. Grateful thanks are due the many people who have worked diligently along with us in every respectg to the staff for their valuable and practical suggestionsg to our advisors, Mrs. M. F. Harris and Miss D. L. Stadler, for their technical advice and untiring efforts. Jacfluelyn Everette Editor-in-Chief Qeafcabbn Our hearts overflowing with love, gratitude, and admiration, we, the graduating class of 1959, have chosen to honor, in a very special way, our de- voted sponsors upon whom we have depended so completely for guidance and understanding throughout the blossoming years of our high school career. GREENE. J. SMITH Gkss jlgsfofy The Senior Class of 1959 has finally reached its long-waited-for dream. Unfortunately, some have fallen by the wayside. From an excited, timid, newly interested group of freshmen, we have climbed the ladder of success, enduring many hardships, failures, and moments of despair. From 122 timid freshmen of 1955 have evolved 72 determined seniors of 1959. You will see what we have done through the years. In September, 1955, 122 boys and girls eagerly enrolled in Douglass High School. We were divided into four sec- tions with Miss Harriet Jones, Mr. Leaman Parker, Miss Mable Fortson, and Miss Dorothy Stadler as advisors. We were all proud of them. They were very dutiful and understanding. This was a happy year for us freshmen. We were very fortunate in having Miss Homecoming. Jacqueline Everette-, to reign over the Homecoming festivities. In the rally, we raised more money than any of the other classifications. We were also fortunate in having the following students make the honor roll: Florine Mack, Jean Monroe, Gene McClain, Queen Rivers, William Watts, Louise Wright, Martha Shaw, Willie Thompson, Henry Wheeler, Willie Cook, Jacqueline Everette, Bernard Walker, Barbara Anderson. Many students appeared in various assembly programs. That year we also had two freshmen in the winners spot- light. Participating ln the annual Oratorical Contest, sponsored by the American Legion, Ellen Louise Wright won lst place - 515. 00. Jacqueline Everette won 3rd place with 55. 00, Other freshmen who participated were Martha Shaw and William Watts. Our class officers were Willie Cook, Rosa L. Cobb, Jean Monroe, and William Watts. Those participating in var- sity football were Robert Banks, Isaac Williams, Amos Tillman, and Willie J. Armster. The varsity basketball player was Martin Bush. That year, unfortunately, we lost 26 pupils. In September, 1956, 96 students returned to start a new term, this time sophomores. Gee! This was an exciting year! Again we had priority over the Homecoming festivities. Jacqueline Everette was again elected Miss Homecoming. Her attendants were Doris Frasier and Jean Monroe, also sophomores. Our instructors that year were Miss D. L. Stadler, Mr. L. C. Parker and Miss M. P. Fortson. In the winners spotlight we again find two sophomores - Ellen Louise Wright flst place! and Martha Shaw 12nd placej. Not only did Ellen win 1st locally, but also lst in the district and 2nd in the state. We were proud of her that year! Our class officers were Martha Shaw, Eddie Coleman, and William Watts. The varsity football players were Charlie Ward, Amos Tillman, William Watts, Wilson Chester, Robert Banks, and Willie I. Armster. Our varsity basket- ball players were Martin Bush and Charlie Ward. The students making the honor roll were Jacqueline Everette, Martha Shaw, Louise Wright, Bernard Walker, Willia Watts, Linwood Dixon, Queen Rivers, James Smith, Willie Thompwn, and Willie Cook. That year Carol Warren was elected as Miss Sophomore. Lucille Mitchell and Christine Simon were her attendants The sophomores ended their term by giving a sophomore ball at the Club Ambassador in May, This gala affair was chaperoned by our three advisors, Miss Stadler, Miss Fortson, and Mr. Parker. In September, 1957, 87 juniors faithfully returned to good ole D.H.S, Our homeroom teachers were Miss M. Fort- son Qwho, during the holidays, became Mrs. Mable Harrisj and Mr. L. C. Parker. We were a great success in the rally. During the Homecoming festivities we were proud to have Jacqueline Everette as an attendant for Miss Douglass. The American Legion again sponsored its annual Oratorical Contest. The only junior participating was Jacqueline Everette. She won 3rd place, S5. 00. The National Honor Society inducted seven juniors into the organization. They were Jacqueline Everette, William Watts, Martha Mae Shaw, Bernard Walker, Queen Esther Rivers, Willie J. Cook, and Ellen Louise Wright And then - the biggest event of all - the JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM! We used as our theme Evening in Paris. It was a grand success! Just the sight of us juniors in handsome dinner jackets and breath-taking formals made us beam with pride! The varsity football players were Robert Banks, Wilson Chester, Amos Tillman, Charlie Ward, Eddie Coleman, William Watts, and Larry Thomas. The basketball varsity players were Eddie Coleman, Martin Bush, Curtis Curry, and Charlie Ward, The girls' varsity team included Daisy Hayes and Erma Hunter. Our class officers were Bernard Walker, presidentg Willie Cook, vice president, Florine Mack, secretary, and Simon Dockett, treasurer. Honor roll members were Jacqueline Everette, Louise Wright, Martha Shaw, Bernard Walker, William Watts, Barbara Anderson, Queen Rivers, Henry Wheeler, and Willie Cook. September, 1958! A year we will always remember. A year forever imprinted in the minds of the seniors of '59, A year that truly showed us to be mature, diligent students, That fall '73 students climbed the last rung of the ladder. With the wonderful guidance of Mrs. M, F, Harris and Miss D. L. Stadler, we began our final year at Douglass High School. The Yearbook Staff gave the first back-to-school hop, which was a grand success! Off to a good start with the Homecoming festivities, Jean Monroe was crowned as 'Miss Douglass. Again the seniors took the lead in the rally. We were most out- standing in the Homecoming parade, We gave Christmas boxes to needy families as a means of sincere appreciation to our wonderful advisors who gave us a lively and colorful Christmas party in the Home Economics room. The remainder of the year promises to be as eventful as the beginning. CASS ff We, the Senior Class of Douglass High School, in this year of 1958 to 1959, being in reasonably good health and of doubt- fully sound mind. realizing the uncertainty of grades and the vaclllating dispositions of our faculty membBl'S. do hereby make this, our last will and testament.
