First And Highway 77 Douglass, KS 67039 1886-1986 Looking back through the archives of Douglass figh School history, it is documented that the class of lineteen eighty-six is the one-hundredth graduating lass. The class of one hundred years ago had five nembers and today the number has grown to almost ifty. The first school in 1870 was known as a “subscrip-ion school with one teacher, but it was not until 1886 hat Douglass Schools held its first official graduation. Since that time graduates all are invited to return to n alumni banquet held each year. Dedication: Mr. bui Bush This year the students of the Douglass Public School System are proud to dedicate the yearbook to Mr. Bill Bush. Mr. Bush has been a teacher at Douglas for eight years and in that time has accomplished many things for the band program. He is responsible for setting up the DHS Stage Band. This band is a reflection of the number of programs and their talent in the Douglass High School Band program. Because of Mr. Bush's persistence, the Stage Band has been able to travel around the state to perform at various schools to show others that a good program can come from a small 3A school. In May, the Concert Band traveled to Kansas City to compete with bands from other states. To raise money for the trip, Mr. Bush organized many fund raisers including a slave sale, dance, and car wash. All of these activities were supported very well by the school and community. Mr. Bush, along with teaching high school band, has been going to school full time to become a counselor for the junior high. He is interested in people, their problems and helping them learn. Many people were shocked to learn Mr. Bill (a name given to him by the kids) was leaving such a successful band program. Mr. Bush is leaving the band program after eight years because he doesn't want to keep teaching and have the students or himself get bored. You have to keep progressing or things will slip away.'' Never fear, though; in a few years he'll be known as another success in a whole new aspect of teaching. As Mr. Bush leaves, the graduating class of 1986 has a unique relationship with him. This is the class that he started teaching in fifth grade. They were the only class that he taught all eight years, and they have the largest number of continuing members. Luckily the system isn't losing Mr. Bush. The band likes to think of themselves as sharing the wealth with other programs. We wish Mr. Bush all the luck in the world in his new job venture. He is a very special part of the Douglass Public Schools and even though he is a bit camera shy at times, he is still a great person. 2 Seniors 6-11 Juniors 12-15 Sophomores 16-18 Freshmen 19-21 Fall 24-33 Winter 34-49 Spring 50-71 Activities 72-83 Scores 56-57 Junior High 87-100 Elementary Index 102-109 ff H L • Bam i i ‘ v ; , .. 1 i y Pippy Longstockings (Krissy Bell) and Cabbage Patch Kid (Carrie Graves) D.H.S. inmate, Dale Nichols Thank you, thank you.......no applause please — just throw money!! It didn't seem possible that such a span of time could have elapsed. Looking at the changes and the way the school has grown made progress more evident. The present high school was built in 1972. The old high school on Chestnut Street was at the site of the present junior high. The only remains were the columns near the street. The school may have changed sites, but the students' spirit is still as strong as ever. The kids have come and gone from one year to the next, but the halls have not remained empty for long. Although each class left a void after graduation, their place has soon been filled by the next class eager to complete their own journey toward success. 5 The Pride Of ’86 A persons senior year of high school is one that will be long remembered. For many seniors, college is a major decision that requires lots of time, effort, and planning. One question that was asked of the seniors was, What do you expect from your senior year? The main response from Sr.'s about their last year was to get a diploma, or graduate. Some of them even though of this graduation as a dream come true. Other expectations of this final year was to have a good-time, make lasting friendships, participate in lots of extra-curricular activities and to SURVIVE. A few of the seniors even had a few nice things to say about the teachers and the overall system at D.H.S. They felt the teachers were always trying to help, the school had a nice atmosphere and that it made them feel like they weren't in school. It was casual! Comments from teachers: Your class has developed a real, positive leadership while at D.H.S. You are super! Mr. Mykel went as far as saying that we were Concrete Sequential as opposed to being Abstract Randoms. Don't worry guys, that meant we were Ok. As a senior at D.H.S. who has attended 12 years of school with the same people, it was with pride that I could say we were a great class with a lot going for us as a group and for each of us as individuals. The Junior class of 1987 could not be grouped into categories easily. Some of the class were academic achievers, some were atheletes, some were musicians, and most were a mixture of all these qualities and many more. The Juniors worked very hard last year in order to raise money for the annual Junior-Senior Prom in the spring. They sold frozen pizzas, raffled off the homecoming football, and worked concessions all year. Although the future seemed to be far away for some, the majority of the junior class knew what their future might have in store for them. A good percentage of the juniors planned to attend some sort of university or technical school. The whole D.H.S. Junior Class of 1985-86 expressed thanks to their sponsors, Mr. Dick Renfro and Mrs. Jan Parker. These two helped out whenever they could and were the driving force behind the success of the class. 12 Jerry Houser showed off his winning smile. The class of '88 could brag that they hadn't gotten cocky, for this quality seemed to be reserved for the juniors and seniors. The year was a different experience for them because they had earned a little more respect from the upper classmen. They didn't feel picked on like they had when they were freshmen. Until now they were just here because the significance of high school hadn't hit them. They began to think about going to college and worrying about getting decent grades. When this sophomore class dreamed of a goal they displayed a great deal of dedication to achieving it. Members predicted a good deal of success for their class. They were anxious for the end of school but being with their friends and doing as well as they could was important. Bart Fisher displayed his skill in shop class. The freshman class of 1985-86 was described as being, “reasonably bright and very social . Most of them found that high school was much better than they had planned, and by the end of the year were ready to take on the rest of their high school years. The four people who played a major role in the determination of the class were the officers. They were: President; Ami Parker, Vice President; Vicki Vermilyea, Secretary; David Mahlandt, Treasurer; Jake Bodine, Stuco Representative; Denise Blachowski. The band seemed to excell in everything it faced. Playing with half the band, having a few days to prepare for a performance, rain, and other problems were commonplace for the band and their director, Bill Bush. Top honors were given to the D.H.S. Marching Band at the Kansas State Fair. Three one's were awarded for the band's performance on rainy Hutchinson streets last fall. The Fall concert was a success as well. Some of the special people in the band last year were the flags and band majorette, Krissy Bell. The flag team members, along with the majorette, performed at many games and special programs. The whole band was sad to see Mr. Bill Bush leave the music program to become a counselor at the Elementary school in Douglass. He was a valuable music educator who will be missed in times to come. Band Majorette, Krissy Bell Flag members: Sheila Tatom, So.; Starla Miller, So.; Sandi Davis, Sr.; Trish Weaver, Sr.; Melanie Baum, Sr.; Lisa Huster, Jr. Football Cheerleaders The football cheerleaders of 1985 were a very talented, high spirited group of women. When they went to summer camp at Fort Hayes State University, they took many individual awards and brought home the overall championship for their exceptional cheering. With the leadership of head cheerleader, Krissy Bell, senior; and their sponsors, Mrs. Rinser, Mr. Mykel and Mr. Parker, they had a great year of bringing spirit to the football team. Other members of the squad were: Staci Sharp, senior; Ginger Martin, junior; Carol Harris, sophomore; Shannon Hiebert, sophomore; Starla Miller, sophomore; and Ami Parker, freshman. Football Team made local news when Jerry Houser was interviewed by the KSN Newscenter 3 Sports Team. Jerry was recognized for his outstanding plays as a running back in the game against Belle Plaine when he scored eighteen points. The final score was 31-12. Behind every football star are his teammates. The whole team was also responsible for victories and defeats. The team was tremendously unique. One member was a Norwegian soccer player who contributed a great deal to the team as a kicker, another major kicker and a local man, Curt Roberts, shared this credit. The Bulldogs came a long way and no one told the fans that their team wasn't 1. The team finished with a record of 7 and 2. The selection from Douglass for Central Plains League are as follows: 1st Team Offensive; Backs-Matt Morrow and Jerry Houser; Receiver-Gary Parker; Lin-eman-Kabin Carder; Kicker-Curt Roberts. The team worked well together and proved that the ever so long tradition of the Douglass High School Volleyball Team being an average team was finally put to rest. Mr. Darter commented on the team saying that they were super great . He felt that since the girls experienced winning they would continue to do so in future years. The 1985-86 Stage Band had a reputation to live up to. For many years Mr. Bill Bush has shaped the D.H.S. Stage Band into one of the finest bands of its kind in the state. This year was no exception. The group was an experienced one with over ten seniors returning to present leadership to younger members. This leadership and careful direction by Bill Bush payed off. The stage band received a perfect score at league contest and their spring tour was highly successful. Work for the tour began in late winter. The stage band only played two places this year, but the performances were up to their normal flair. The Stage Band will sorely miss the quality direction of Mr. Bill Bush, along with all other music students. Mr. Bush has directed the band for years and has proved himself a fine music educator. Brad Bodine, Phil Jake signed autographs. Band throws music. Bush throws music. llslf Cheerleading Spirit Sensation The cheerleading spirit sensation of the year was the Wrestling Cheerleaders. They supported the guys not only with their voices but with time, decorations, special treats at break and even a breakfast. Dan was chosen for the Second Team All League. This year's team did not have much natural ability but they had a lot of heart and determination to work hard which showed throughout the season, said Coach Gillaspie. Coach Gilla-spie's pre-season prediction for the varsity was ten wins and eight losses. Fortunately for Mr. Gillaspie, he was not a fortune teller. He would have been out of business. The 1986 baseball season was full of ups and downs. The team was young, with only three seniors returning, but a strong showing by juniors and underclassmen pulled the team together. Some of the highlights of the year were sweeping two games from powerhouse Rose Hill, and playing competitively with the undefeated Sedan. A major change was made concerning the facilities used for baseball. The field was moved from behind the vocational building to the West Athletic Field. The field was much nicer and later lights were added. D.H.S. had three people make the All League Team List. These were David Darter, Jeff Myers, and James Pykiet. Matt Houser- D.H.S. Honor King And Queen Les Tatom Krissy Bell At the end of the school year, two students from each class are chosen to represent the highest academic levels, and are chosen to be Honor King and Queen. They acquire this title by points based mainly on grades and involvement in school activities. The boy and girl chosen to be the over all king and queen have the highest grade point average out of all the classes. The purpose of this contest is to give students a goal to work for in their academic studies. The delegates must have these qualifications. They should have an interest in government, have outstanding leadership qualities, be honest, have good character and be cooperative. Their scholarship should be above average and they must have finished their junior year and be a citizen of the United States. They should be interested in extra-curricular activities. n Student Council Leaders Cadette Lawman Academy Our student council president, Todd Hewlett, and secretary-treasurer, attended a student council workshop during the summer. It was intended to help develop leadership skills to be used during the school year in the work ahead of them in student council. Curt Roberts expressed an interest in law enforcement. The purpose of Cadet Lawman Academy is to help young Kansans gain knowledge about training and responsibifities of Law Enforcement. To be eligible, a student must be in the top one-half of his class scholastically and in good physical condition. He also needs the signed endorsement of his high school principal, a local law enforcement official and his American Legion Commander or Auxiliary President. He must also believe in the principles of law and order and service to God and country. The program was held in June in Salina. 66 Purple Passion Boat Team Purple Passion marked its third year at D.H.S. It was made by the welding class. Qualifications for piloting the boat were working on the boat for two years, being a senior and an advanced welder. Shirts and caps with a picture of a boat were sold to supporters for the team. Racing was a tiresome task and called for strength and endurance. The boat raced in the Wichita River Festival. They finished first in their heat, received first in the Country Cousin class and were fourth over all. They also raced in Hutchinson Anything That Floats Race and the ElDorado Anything that Floats Race. They had to score in the top ten in the state on the written portion. The schools were limited to four entries in the written and two in the finals. These four young men were second in the state on the written test. Dale and Daren went on to get fourth in the state in the Hands On Competition. 67 Skip Trip The senior class left the school at 6:45 a.m. and headed for Edmond, Oklahoma. When they arrived in Edmond, the first stop was Enterprise Square where they had a lesson on economics. Then the fun started. Roller skating was another learning experience, everyone found out how coordinated they really were. Next was everyones favorite thing to do. Shopping!! They spent some time at Edmond's version of Town East. After that it was time for a little Puttputting as they tried their hand at minature golf. By this time they had worked up quite an appetite. They satisfied their hunger by going to Molly Murph's where there was lots of good food and lots of fun. Although they had a rather unpleasent scare by following a tornado all the way home, they had a very nice time arrived home at 11:30 p.m., they were all pretty much exhausted. The senior class consisted of forty member; twenty boys and twenty girls. The message given by the class speakers discussed the closeness and accomplishments of the centennial class. The Douglass Museum commemorated graduating classes back through 1886 with a window display held in the commons area. Many congratulations go to the graduates who have contributed to the success of all graduating classes. Valedictorian was Krissy Bell and Salutatorian was Jennifer Parker for the 100th graduating class. Both girls presented warm thoughts to the class expressing the friendship and concerns that were held between classmates. The closing was a hard step as the individuals were saying their last good-byes and wishing each other the best of luck. As once said, Give the world the best you have and the best will come back to you. If one can accomplish this challenge, then there is no limit to achievements. Always remember: Dream what you dare to dream Go where you dare to go Be what you want to be. Live! Kristina Bell Over 25 people participated in the extra-curricular Drama Club this year. Drama is open to freshmen through seniors. This year the number of students in individual events doubled as did the number of state qualifiers this year. At the state competition this year the individual events did quite well with 4 out of 5 competitors receiving 1 ratings. As a part of Academic Spirit Week the Speech and Drama Club presented a program on Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. Referring to the one-act contest play, The Marriage, Mrs. M. said, This cast was probably the most dependable and talant-ed group that I have worked with since I have been here. Also, I don't know what 1 would have done without my stage manager, Dave Turner. Douglass had a very strong FHA chapter and as a result it had a lot of activities. Painting the weight rooms, giving pumpkin bread to the elderly and competing in district and state competitions were a few. FHA also supported other organizations by providing cookies at break for sports teams. Stage Band and also the entire student body. Stuco, among its other duties, is in charge of assigning concessions for sports events, funding student dances, and maintaining a feeling of leadership at D.H.S. throughout the entire school year. Stuco is made up of one representative from every class and organization. Together, these representatives make collective decisions that effect the whole student body. In the fall of last year at Student Council workshop was held in Newton that all members of Stuco attended. Some of the themes taught were leadership, self-discipline, and school spirit. Student Council funded dances last year, as well as other important student functions. This funding process is just one of the parts of Stuco that will continue in years to come. National Honor Society is an organization that helps to recognize outstanding acheivers in the world of scholarship. Every year at D.H.S. several new members are inducted into National Honor Society at an induction ceremony in the spring. This year six members were inducted. To be chosen for membership a student has to be at least a sophomore, and be nominated by a teacher. Once nominated, the student must submit a short essay to the committee telling why he or she would like to be a member of N.H.S. The candidates are next reviewed by a faculty committee. Last year N.H.S. also was involved in helping Cheney start an N.H.S. chapter at their high school. The group from Douglass also visited Cowtown's Empire House where the fine meal and comical entertainment was enjoyed by all. N.H.S. member David Reynolds smiled enthusiastically. 79 Brad Clark-' VVhat, me a honor student? Academic Spirit Week At D.H.S. The 1985-1986 Academic Spirit Week had all the thrills, chills, and exciting events that D.H.S. students are accustomed to. Although the week was shortened, all the academic-related events were rescheduled into a hectic three days of activity. Some of the highlights of the week were the Talent Show, Anything Goes Competition, and the many tests and quizes. The annual Current Events Competition was held earlier in the week last year, but still proved to be challenging to all that participated. The Talent Show was won by trumpeter Curtis Cox, but also included the comic stylings of Ted Shellhamer and 1984-1985 winners XYZ Affair. Anything Goes was won by the Juniors, and featured KSN TV-3 sports-caster Steve Dennis. After all the points were tallied, the Juniors had won the week! They received $50 in prize money which went to fund Prom and other activities. Freshman Vicki Vermilyea dribbled as Jr.'s looked on. Sophomore Manford Baum sped through the obstacle course. 80 Sportscaster Steve Dennis conferred with the Freshman team. Fundraising Builds Interests Mark Roberts tried to convince Jill Hiebert and Lisa Simon to buy a computer match. Brenda Reynolds and Luana Lewis signed up to sell pizzas at a football game. A project which built interest among the students was fundraising. The purpose was to get students involved with their classes. They became economically aware of the business world. Fundraising ranged from individual class sales to working concessions. The profits earned from each class went toward their treasury. Most often the money received was used for proms and senior trips. Julie Coatney tried to drum up business. Travis Carr and David Turner visited the vending machines. Discussing who sold the most was; Kathy Billings, Debbie Fal-conberg, Kathy Minahan, Melinda Prichard and Penny White. Exchange Student Mads (Matt) Mortensen Last year, we received two foreign visitors. By a stroke of uncanny luck, these two were not only from the same country, but they came from the same city. Mads (Matt ) Mortensen was one of the AFS sponsored exchange students who came from Norway to DHS last year. Matt was very excited about his trip to America while still in Oslo, Norway. People talk about American like it is Southern California everywhere, and exciting all of the time , Matt said of the Norwegian opinion of the United States. Matt made many friends while here in Kansas, but felt a little homesick during his stay here. I really missed my friends back home a lot when I first got here, but after a while I made new friends who I'm sure I will miss when I get back home , Matt said. Matt also confided that he missed Norwegian girls. Matt hopes in the future to open up a record store in his native land of Norway. Matt enjoys music very much and attended the Loverboy and ZZ Top concerts while here in America. Matt played football, basketball and ran in track while here at DHS. Everyone wished Matt good luck and a fond farewell. 82 Egil Storstein was a foreign exchange student at DHS. Egil enjoyed a new and exciting life style available in the United States. When asked about the differences in schools, he said that in Norway the students have different courses everyday. Here the same courses are taken everyday throughout the year. He said he had taken two new types of classes which were Chorus and Automechanics. He participated in chorus and really liked the concerts put on by the high school. His out-of-school activities included dancing and skating. Egil lives in a suburb of Oslo. He believed that it was easier for him to catch a bus to get him around Oslo than it was to tour Wichita, even though Oslo was larger. He said the U.S. and Norway have about the same things, but the U.S. advertised quite a bit more. Egil was very excited about seeing his family and his little sister. Anne Kristine. He was reluctant to say good-bye to his foster family, the Little's. Overall he said he hadn't experienced much home sickness. Egil traveled to Washington D.C. as well as visited some very interesting and historical places. Egil told us that he had visited the east coast on a previous trip to the U.S. Egil's plans for the future were to return home and finish high school and then go to college. He hopes to get a job in the field of electronics or computers. Native Norwegian. Egil enjoys a snack between classes. Life in America is real and it's fun, but it's not real run. Jr. High Football The Douglass Junior High football team did well in 1985-86. The eighth grade leadership was fantastic according to Coach LaMar. The boys developed coordination and speed from their grueling practices and sportsmanship. When a team does as well as they did, they deserve a lot of credit and recognition. Each member improved throughout the year, and all were an asset to the team. The old cliche, All for one and one for all, fit them because they needed each other to encourage, criticize and to help each other get through the hard times. Their accomplishments did not go unnoticed. The parents and fans were very proud of them and their record, which was 3-4. There were three team records set for the year. The hurdles were a vital necessity for the opening season of the D.H.S. track. The mothers of the athletes provided food and drink for all away events. The dedication and support of the parents was quite commendable. The organization has become a tradition that has earned the respect from the student body. Devotion was shown by parents' loyalty in attending sports events in spite of unfavorable conditions. Students are proud to have their parents involved in their athletic endeavors. As a final tribute to the D.H.S. athletes, Booster Club hosted an Athletic Banquet for recognition of high school athletic achievements. The Booster Club has helped promote good sportsmanship and achievement. 109 1986 Comes To A Close Looking back on the year gone by, it becomes evident that 1986 had marked history as the first one hundred years. The first graduating class was in 1886. As a school system Douglass has characterized itself in unity and pride which have been the qualities of our fine foundation. Throughout the years the encouraging support from those in the community have contributed a great deal in the success at Douglass High. In the years to come we hope the efforts to upgrade and modernize the school district will continue. Very few of us can imagine the magnitude of the improvements likely to happen by 2086. In closing, I would like to extend my appreciation to Mrs. Jennings and the 1986 yearbook staff for making this book a success. We hope this edition will hold fond memories for you in the years to come. My Best Always! Randy J.
