EXPANDING HORIZONS DOUGLASS HIGH SCHOOL FIRST HWY. 77 DOUGLASS, KANSAS AUGUST 84-MAY 85 PRICE-S9.00 Most people think of history as a relatively boring class. It’s not like English where verb tenses can vary, making more than one possible answer. Only one answer will do and if you miss it, you're out of luck. Like all classes, the teacher has a lot to do with the interest and involvement of students. This year the yearbook has been dedicated to Mr. Morris Gillaspie. He has been a teacher at bouglass High School for three years, and is a major contributor to our school system. Mr. Gillaspie is the geography, world history and American history teacher. In many ways he has influenced the students in their school work because of the way he teaches. Because of Mr. Gillaspie, students have become interested and involved in a class which could be boring. Comments made by some of the students about Mr. G. have been, “He is an excellent teacher and he really cares!” or “He is concerned with your grades and if you have a problem he will listen and try to help you.” The one comment heard most when asking about Mr. G. was that “He is fair to all students, beyond fair.” 1984-1985 yearbook dedicated to Mr. Gillaspie from DHS students Mr. Gillaspie is the assistant football coach, head basketball coach, and assistant track coach. Players enjoy Mr. G. because he is a good coach, and easy to get along with. A comment from a player was “He is a very dedicated coach who always does the best for the team.” A teacher with an outlook as great as Mr. G’s has got to be someone special. Thanks for caring! They started new traditions as well as keeping or changing the old. Whether we were studying advanced composition or government, we always had time for fun. Our class motto says, “What appears to be the end may be a new beginning.” As we are finishing our last year of high school, we are keeping this motto in mind while seriously planning our future. There were 12 students who have attended Douglass since grade one. We would like to recognize them on this page: Kendra Harris, Kristy McGee, Lisa Anderson, Dana Sisk, Kevin Darter, Rod Davis, Kevin Coambes, Kelly Carter, Rod Meyers, Brent Pickett, Tim Payton, and Dane Rounkles. We would like to thank our Senior class officers for helping make the year less hectic. Plus a big thanks to Mr. Mykel for helping out. JUNIORS CLASS OF 1986 Class officers: President Gary Parker, Se-cretary Treasurer Tracy Hollenback, Stuco Staci Sharp, Vice President Matt Morrow. The class of 1986 has been experiencing new and exciting things in their junior year of high school from taking all of the college preparation tests to getting funds for prom by selling Current. The junior class of forty-nine students has grown as a group and as individuals. They are involved with the school system and community as shown by their increasing strides to show maturity. The class of 1986 will soon be upon their final year of high school, where high hopes and expectations are to meet all students. For their fund raising they have sold stuf fed animals and planning calendars. They have also worked in concessions and they raffled off the homecoming football. Many excelled in acedemics and also participated in all areas of athletics. r Phil Anderson Cina Barnes Danny Bayouth Doreen Bergley Brad Bodine Kathy Bradford Travis Carr Jason Cathey Brad Clark Kelly Dawson Regina Diel Wesley Dutton Kevin Gulick Jerry Houser Lisa Huster Luana Lewis Gena Lott Mike Mahlandt Ginger Martin Randy Minahan Danny Morckel Renee Newcomb Justin Price Brenda Reynolds Curt Roberts Patti Rose Shelly Schmidt Jodi Stevenson Micki Whitted Andra Wilhite SOPHOMORES This year for the freshmen introduction, we tried to find a different way to brink the froshies into the limelight of their section of the yearbook. So, instead of just printing a picture of the class officers and a few candids, we went out and interviewed them to get an idea of their feelings and impressions of their first year at DHS. Here are some of the responses that we got: Q. HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT ENTERING HIGH SCHOOL? A. “Fired-upl”, “not scared”, scared”, “anxious”, “glad to be out of Junior High”, ready for it , it got better after we were here for a while”. Q. WHAT IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT BEING A FRESHMAN? A. “More musical activities than in junior high”, being able to mess something up and not having to worry about it, people just say, ‘oh well, they’re just freshmen’”. COMMENTS: “You get tired of people picking on you just because you’re a freshman”, “high school wasn’t what we expected”, it is a different feeling being here”, “being a freshman gives us an excuse for doing stuff”, you can get away with more in high school than you can in junior high”. This year the freshman class has really become involved in school and school activities. Big things can be expected of them, and you can expect to find them EVERYWHERE, especially when it comes to extra curricular functions. Good Luck, freshmen, enjoy high school! They are a concerned group of elected citizens who care about the Douglass Public Schools. They often meet late into the night. They help provide the funds to support new items to further the educational process. Even though the board gets a lot of criticism, they also deserve a lot of recognition for the fine job they have done. Sr. As a senior member of the team this year, I want to wish future teams the best of luck. I hope that you reach a goal I set for volleyball, to go to a state championship. If you want to set that for the team, everyone has to have that attitude, not just 3 or 4 people. Work for the goal all season long strive to be the best you can be. „ Dana Sisk • 2nfl Te W |!-Leai To next year’s volleyball team. I wish ya lots of luck with your team. I know you will do great if you just apply yourselves to do the best you can. There is a lot of talent in the coming classes, so use it to have a victorious season. You have some great coaches, so work together as a team. Go For IT! I think that the one thing I would like to tell next year’s volleyball players is to HAVE FUN! Volleyball is a team sport, and it takes a lot of concentration and skill. But if you don’t enjoy yourself and enjoy what you are doing then you won’t ever be a true success. It’s how you feel about yourself and what you’ve done that really counts. Good Luck and do your best. Jr. Varsity Top: Andra Wilhite, So., Kristi Adams, Jr., Lezli Skinner, Sr., Annette Allen. So., Bottom: Melinda Baum, Jr., Ginger Martin, So. 1984-85 volleyball started the season with high hopes of a prosperous year. They set goals as individuals and as a team. The team goals were; (1) to fill the season with the thrill of victory rather than the agony of defeat and (2) to work as a team instead of individuals on the court. The Lady Bulldogs reached these goals through determination, hard work, and patience. The team had two new coaches. Larry Darter was the head coach, Kim Kinser was assistant coach. These two developed a new offense for the team and challenged the team to reach their goals. This year’s team was a young one. There were three seniors on the team, with two returning starters. The rest of the team was made up mostly of juniors and freshmen, with a little less sophomore participation. Freshmen Top: Denise Thomas. With school back in full swing and sports activities building back up, the students were getting together with new and old friends. One special time of year is football season. Although attendance for most games is large, the highlight of the football season is on the evening of Homecoming. This year the evening held a significance to fans and players because the Douglass Bulldogs played the Medicine Lodge Indians which were considered to be one of the most forceful teams in the state. This year, the homecoming ceremonies were held on October 5 at 7:00 p.m. before the start of the game. The candidates were first escorted around the field in Ed Weishaar’s Mustang. The ceremonies began with the candidates and the escorts marching onto the field. Ladies in waiting were Stacey Raupe escorted by Albert Simon, April Blachowski escorted by Shawn Moore and Dana Sisk escorted by Jeff Houser. Joining them was the 1984 Queen, Serena Petrie escorted by Dean Zaldi-var. Background music highlighted theme “To Me’’. FHA president Lezli Skinner announced the 1985 Queen, Dana Sisk. The game concluded with the Bulldogs winning 20-0. Festivities ended with a Homecoming Dance after the game. HOMECOMING '85 Shawn Moore, April Blachowski, Jeff Houser, Dana Sisk, Dean Zaldivar. During the year they had several fund raisers such as concession stands, car washes, and work days. They attended camp at the Dynamic Cheerleader Association where they received the award for most improved squad. The captain this year was Staci Sharp. They had three sponsors this year, Mrs. Janet Allard, Mr. Kevin Mykel, and Mrs. Kim Kinser. The girls worked hard this year but they had alot of fun while doing it. There the men’s team played three teams to be beaten in the final game with Hesston to become the Sub-state Runner-up. The season ended with a record of 19-3, which rates as the best basketball record in the history of Douglass High School. One game which becomes a yearly battle for the Bulldogs is the one with the Rockets. With a score of 50-48, Rose Hill fell to defeat this year. At the Burrton Tournament, Douglass won against Burrton and Remington and lost to become the Runner-up against Pretty Prarie. Senior Albert Simon and Junior Matt Morrow were selected as members of the CPL All League Team and also Honorable Mention All-state by the TOPEKA DAILY CAPITAL. Other members of the varsity squad were Seniors Kevin Darter, Tom Rose, Rod Wallace, Shawn Moore, Jeff Houser, Rod Davis, Juniors Gary Parker and Danny Macy. Junior Varsity Basketball was coached by Jim Pykiet. They had a 11-5 record. They played all but one of their home games on the Junior High Gym court. Having lost the game to Belle Plaine last year, the defeat was important to this year’s team. With most of the varsity squad graduating this year, this was a crucial building year for the Bulldogs. Top: Becky Pykiet, Denise Thomas. Bottom: Lisa Kunz, Penny White w R E S T L I N G This year’s wrestling cheerleader did an excellent job at raising the spirit of the team. They used a new technique of cheering that they learned at camp. It was geared more towards the college-type cheering with sharp, definite movements. They gave the wrestlers some kind of recognition (such as fruit, decorated lockers, or posters) each match. The squad received a new outfit this year. It made them look real sharp out on the floor cheering. BULLDOG WRESTLERS: A As senior wrestling managers, we have been proud to be associated with this group of guys. In the three years that we have managed, this team has been the hardest working, oneriest and greatest of them all. This team had heart, unity, and desire for excellence. They wanted to win and were willing to work hard in order to achieve that success. The coaches, Dusty Rhodes and Harry LaMar, were also the greatest. They pushed the team hard and demanded obedience and dedication. They were also open to each member of the team in terms of friendship or just extra coachng. Over all, this team, coaches included, has meant the most to us. They were fun to be with and easy to support. We share your pride in the 1984-85 DHS Wrestling Team. This year it was on March 18-22. About that time of year students and teachers both are getting tired of each other and the daily routine. That’s why we have Academic Spirit. Throughout the week there were all sorts of class competitions and activities for the kids. Everyday there was an attendance count to see how many kids from every grade was in school. There was also a different dress code each day. Points were given to each class for every different event. The points ranged from 4 to 1, with the highest being 4. At the end of the week they were totaled and the overall winner was the Juniors. Other events included the talent show, the anything goes competition, competency testing, school awareness tests and speaker day. BASEBALL FINISHES STRONG Row 1: Shannon Hiebert (mgr ). With determination and pride the team was able to bring home a long awaited winning season. Not only does the booster club supply sandwiches and pop for the athletes after their games and events, but they also attend the games to provide support for both the players and the entire school. This year the boosters put on a party for the entire wrestling team after the season was over. A good time was had by all. As we look back through the years we seem to vision memories of the people who have touched us in special ways. As a friend, Eldon was one who brought alot of happiness to everyone who knew him. He was a caring person who listened when someone was troubled. Time and time again Eldon proved how hospitable he was. He made his home welcome to anyone who needed a place to stay. The special thing about Eldon was that he wasn’t afraid of challenging anything for he lived life to the fullest. Those who knew Eldon will remember him the way he lived his life. State II SENIOR TRIP TO KANSAS CITY U. S. D. 396 DOUGLASS. KANSAS At 5:30 a.m. Sunday, May 5, seventeen seniors were fired up for the 1984-85 senior trip to “World’s of Fun” in Kansas City. They arrived at the park at 10:30. Six hours of fun waited for them inside the gates. Each senior was given twenty-five dollars of class funds. After a day of excitement, they left at 4:30 p.m. They were not as fired up as when they had arrived. The sponsors enjoyed a quiet ride home. The bus pulled into good ol’ D.H.S. at 9:30 that evening. Everyone got plenty of sleep. That made us all the more ready to be at school the next morning. yiWJOK AMD SSMJOK PKOM - 19S5 Gary Parker Matt Morrow Tracy Hollenback Staci Sharp Judy Baldridge Jo Jennings u rurt President Vice President Secretary-Treasurer Stuco Sponsors Give the world the best you have and the best will come back to you. Throughout the six months of practice from January to May, students may become involved in many different areas of speech and performance from Solo and Duet Acting to different types of speeches and a one-act play. As membership doubled from the previous year, so did the amount of events qualifying for state. This list included the one-act play; Krissy Bell, Original Oration; Tom Rose-Ginger Martin, Duet Acting; Tom Rose-Joanna Weiss, Improvised Duet Acting; and Joanna Weiss-Jim Taylor Duet Acting. This was the first year in several that individuals have qualified for state competition. I believe that STUCO has the responsibility to help improve student life and to set good examples through community services.” Student Council, or STUCO for short, is an organization made up of students for the students. Their sponsor is Mr. Donley, the school counselor. Traditionally STUCO sponsors dances, gives out free candy or drinks befoe holidays, and makes suggestions concerning student life. They pay for these activities by working concession stands at a few home games. This year they are concerned with such activities as visiting the nursing home and sponsoring blood donations. All of the STUCO members are enthused about the idea of performing community services. Quoting one member, “Everyone’s fired up about it, I think that we are going to have the best student council in years.” Officers: Tood Hewlett (Treas), Dean Zaldivar (Pres ), Kendra Harris (Vice-Pres.), Krissy Bell (Sec.) NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Front Row: Krissy Bell, Tom Rose (Stuco Rep.), Frank Muster, (Treasurer), Dean Zaldivar, Lezli Skinner, Brent Pickett, Kevin Darter (President), Dana Sisk (Vice-President), Back Row: Todd Hewlett, Mr. Donley (Sponsor), Jennifer Parker, James Pykiet, Staci Sharp, Phil Anderson, Matt Morrow, Melinda Baum, Gena Lott, Jim Taylor, Adam Powell, Gary Parker Scholarship, service, leadership and character are the four qualifications students should represent to become a member of National Honor Society. The students who have been accepted must have a 3.2 grade point average or above. These students must then be nominated by a high school teacher. A committee of six faculty members then vote on each candidate by considering how well he represents the areas of scholarship, service, leadership and character. Each must be voted unanimously to become a member. This year’s committee consisted of Janet Allard, Don Donley, Morris Gillaspie, Jo Jennings, William Parker and Tamara My-kel. During the school year NHS works concession stands. They hold an initiation banquet for their new members in the spring. Students who have been selected as members of NHS earn a status and honor which they can proudly include on their high school records. AWARDS ASSEMBLY On May 13th many students were awarded certificates for their outstanding work which they have shown throughout the school year. The students are chosen by each teacher from their grade points which they have accumulated during the academic year and also by their improvement and leadership which they have shown in class. At the end of each year these students are recognized in an all school assembly in which they receive an award. MANUEL, TOUR '85’ Manuel Garrido is a foreign exchange student from southern Spain. He came to America with 200 other exchange students from Spain. When they arrived, they were scattered about the country to attend various high schools. Manuel was sent to Douglass High and lived with three different families while he was here. They were Bill and Pam Milliken, Charlene Mills and Mike and Toni Banister. The yearbook staff asked him to tell us about his experiences in American and this is what he said, The hardest thing about adjusting to the American lifestyle is the language. In Spain, I studied English for five years, but it’s not the same English as in America. I learned the proper pronunciation and usage of words and sentences in Spain, but in America, everyone speaks slang. The first difference I noticed between the countries, other than the language, were the cars. In Spain, nearly all of the cars are Spanish or European built. In America, the cars come from everywhere.” We asked him what home life is like in Spain. He said, “Well, I have a mother and a father. I also have three brothers and a sister. We live in a coastal town in southern Spain called Huelva. I go to a large school of about 2000 students called the Institute Alonso Sanchez. The people in Spain are the same as people in America. We are all just ‘ordinary people’. The only difference that I see is in custom. For example, in Spain we have a two hour lunch break and a light supper instead of a small lunch break and a main dinner.” We asked him what he did in Spain for fun. Manuel replied, “I belong to a rock group called ‘Autoblus’. We play concerts around the country with four or five other bands. When I am not with the band I do the same thing there as I do in America, go to movies, dances and concerts.” Finally, we asked him what he plans to do in the future and this is what he said, “I plan to go back to Spain and finish my senior year in high school. After this, I want to attend a college in Madrid and study computer sciences. I have had a lot of good times in America and when I get enough money I hope to return for a visit.” The Douglass High School student body wishes Manuel the best at whatever he does and sincerely hopes that he will return sometime to visit us. FUND RAISINGS A major event that goes on throughout the year is fund raisings. Sometime or another every class has the challenge to try to raise enough money to sponsor the junior and senior prom, or have enough money for a senior skip trip. Throughout the year there were many types of fund raisings as selling cushions, posters, Current magazines, stuffed animals and running concessions at ball games. These projects give every student a chance to work toward something and make the school year a more successful one. The kids have a chance to get involved in sports and compete with other schools. This year the Jr. High football team, coached by a new teacher Harry LaMar, played six games. They worked together as a team and made a vast improvement over the previous year. I would like to thank the Yearbook staff for trying to get their work done. If it wasn’t for the student body and the faculty, the Yearbook class could not make the yearbook a success. This book is about expanding your horizons. If you want to accomplish a goal, you have to step out and do the best you can. I challenge you to expand your horizons and reach for the stars.
