HOMECOMING WAS TOTALLY CAPTIVATING The scene was set for the 1983 Football Homecoming. The theme, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, was played softly while the queen candidates were escorted around the football field by Ken Bell in his Corvette convertible. The first candidate was Gayle Crowley. Gayle as a senior has been active in volleyball, wrestling cheerleader, along with other organizations. She was escorted by Steve Rausch, a junior. The next candidate was Teresa Hewlett, a senior. Teresa served as secretary treasurer of the Senior class. She has been active in volleyball, basketball, track and many other activities. Teresa was escorted by Danny Williamson, a senior. The third candidate was Serena Petrie. Serena, also a senior, has been very active in volleyball, FHA and many other extra-curricular activities. She was escorted by Jeff Wakefield, also a senior. The reigning queen J.P. Macy, was escorted onto the field by Tim Cash, a senior. After the candidates and their escorts had taken their places, the crown bearer and the flower girl were escorted out on the field by Ginger Martin. They were Brian Bush and Courtney Renfro. A silence fell over the crowd as Kendra Harris read the final words. The 1983 Football Homecoming Queen is ... Serena Petrie. As the crowd watched excitedly, Jeff tried to remember what to do next. After the cape and the crown were placed on Serena, he kissed her. Then Serena reminded Jeff about the flowers. Embarrassment overwhelmed him as he retrieved the flowers. To make up for his blunder, he planted another kiss on her lips without hesitation. The remainder of the evening was memorable. 28 Homecoming

Fr; Krissy Bell. So: Kendra Gibson. So; Teresa Hewlett, Sr. Captain. Football Cheerleading practice started the second week of June. Cheerleader workweek followed. Raising money for camp was hard; many people were not able to supply jobs for the cheerleaders to earn money. Everyone was enthusiastic for the spirited season ahead. The squad consisted of one senior, one junior, three sophomores and two freshman. Camp was a hot and sweaty experience. But, it all paid off in the end. The cheering mate- rial we brought home was used over and over. We also learned just what each of us had to give, and to what limit we could be pushed. Mrs. Baldridge was our sponsor and a real help to us. We were grateful to her for washing uniforms, providng snacks, and to make us feel it was all really worth it. We always tried to please our fans and team, sometimes we tried too hard. But, no-matter how tough it got we stuck behind our decision, right or wrong. Roomates: Jody-Lisa H.
