A ballot is taken among only the juniors and seniors to help in making this decision. This year the dedication is to Mr. Renfro. Dick Renfro is fairly new to our school system but is certainly among the most popular teachers. He teaches biology classes of different levels. Mr. Renfro is also the head football coach, freshman basketball coach, and assistant track coach. When the students were asked what makes Mr. Renfro special to them, the most common response was that he is very understanding and he cares about you as a person. Many said that they often look to him for advice on both academic and personal problems. Students have also commented that they really like the way Mr. Renfro teaches because he tries to teach the subject on their level. And his positive attitude helps to brighten up everyones day. All in all there are three words that describe Mr. Renfro — caring, understanding, and FUN!!! 2 Dedication Seniors ....... Juniors ....... Looking back at all the promises we made and the dreams we had. We won, lost; laughed, cried and were happy and sad. Together ... We would never give up when we thought we were right. But with all our heart we had the will to get up and fight. Together ... When things went wrong and did not go our way. We would remember there is always tomorrow and another day. Together ... We had classes that seemed to have no ending. Always you would find us looking at a window daydreaming. Together ... When the days are long. Some grumble that lifes all wrong. Together ... As we walk down the halls saying good-bye. Wondering later in life, if our friendship will die. Together ... We stand together watching the sky. With the moon so bright and the stars so high. Together ... As the time grows near with summer on the way. There are things to do and words to say. Together ... The time has come; for some will leave and some will stay. In years to come they will be back another day. Together . . . As the few walk out the door. Our memories forever are in here together in ’84. by Tina Dunlap ... Footloose ... Hard To Hold ... .. The senior class of 84 are in an elite class of their own. They are a fun-spirited group who have worked very hard to get where they are. John Eaton has been the class sponsor for all four years. As well as being a warm individual, he has helped in more ways than one. At fund raisers Mr. Eaton was always there to lend a helping hand, or a teasing comment. When the class started the first of four years at DHS, teachers wondered what they were getting themselves into after hearing all the rumors about the class being rowdy. But after a couple of months the teachers learned that they were stuck with the class and had to make the best of it. The best was better then they thought it to be. Varsity and junior varsity made an appearance in new uniforms to help start the season. Everyone advanced and learned skills fast. But, Douglass varsity had some frustrating times. It was hard setting and keeping their own pace in a game. At times it took them a whole game before they would get the aggressive animalistic attitude. The Douglass variety ended the season with 5 wins and 21 losses. They went into Sub-State seated eighth. The varsity squad left from Douglass High School two hours early for Sub-State playoffs. The team had an hour to wake-up and get some serious thinking done about the game ahead. They played Belle Plaine three games. The first game was lost to the Dragons 15-4. The second game the Bulldogs came from behind 14-3 to win 16-14. The third and final game was taken by the Dragons. All hopes of going to State were lost. There were many individual victories accomplished during a game. Down-hard spikes, gave our team a surge of powerful energy. The main subject in volleyball is to “get ahead and “keep ahead’ and “pound on the other team . Once these goals of mental punishment towards the other team is accomplished, you’re in the lead. 24 Volleyball BUILDING FOR A NEW TOMORROW Junior Varsity (First Row)-Tina Dunlap. They are still in a process of learning plays. The junior varsity made tremendous progress throughout the season. Volleyball 25 FOOTBALL ' First row: Mgr. The coaches were pleased with this years team overall. They agreed that “there were a few disappointing places in the squad but we were able to get them worked out.'6 Even though the team didn’t receive the honor to go to State playoffs this year, they were happy with their winning season. Football is a very demanding sport which requires a tremendous amount of determination and concentration. Even though the game takes total concentration, on the practice field there was some goof- ing off which created a lively atmosphere for the players and the coach. Of course the coaches were really the ones to goof off. The senior football players would like to thank the coaches, the fans and the rest of the football squad and say “good luck next year!” 26 Football Football 27 HOMECOMING WAS TOTALLY CAPTIVATING The scene was set for the 1983 Football Homecoming. The theme, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, was played softly while the queen candidates were escorted around the football field by Ken Bell in his Corvette convertible. The first candidate was Gayle Crowley. Gayle as a senior has been active in volleyball, wrestling cheerleader, along with other organizations. She was escorted by Steve Rausch, a junior. The next candidate was Teresa Hewlett, a senior. Teresa served as secretary treasurer of the Senior class. She has been active in volleyball, basketball, track and many other activities. Teresa was escorted by Danny Williamson, a senior. The third candidate was Serena Petrie. Serena, also a senior, has been very active in volleyball, FHA and many other extra-curricular activities. She was escorted by Jeff Wakefield, also a senior. The reigning queen J.P. Macy, was escorted onto the field by Tim Cash, a senior. After the candidates and their escorts had taken their places, the crown bearer and the flower girl were escorted out on the field by Ginger Martin. They were Brian Bush and Courtney Renfro. A silence fell over the crowd as Kendra Harris read the final words. The 1983 Football Homecoming Queen is ... Serena Petrie. As the crowd watched excitedly, Jeff tried to remember what to do next. After the cape and the crown were placed on Serena, he kissed her. Then Serena reminded Jeff about the flowers. Embarrassment overwhelmed him as he retrieved the flowers. To make up for his blunder, he planted another kiss on her lips without hesitation. The remainder of the evening was memorable. 28 Homecoming J.P. Macy. Tim Cash Gayle Crowley. Raising money for camp was hard; many people were not able to supply jobs for the cheerleaders to earn money. Everyone was enthusiastic for the spirited season ahead. The squad consisted of one senior, one junior, three sophomores and two freshman. Camp was a hot and sweaty experience. But, it all paid off in the end. The cheering mate- rial we brought home was used over and over. We also learned just what each of us had to give, and to what limit we could be pushed. Mrs. Baldridge was our sponsor and a real help to us. We were grateful to her for washing uniforms, providng snacks, and to make us feel it was all really worth it. We always tried to please our fans and team, sometimes we tried too hard. But, no-matter how tough it got we stuck behind our decision, right or wrong. Roomates: Jody-Lisa H. Although the band was smaller this year, they still were as strong as ever. Most of the marching band played football, so we were short key members. But we managed with the help of our band director, Mr. “Bill” Bush. On the field Teresa Hewlett, the field conductor, kept us all in line and kept the beat going. This year, we had a new flag squad. The three returning flag members were Kendra Harris, captain, Sandy Davis, and Nicole Patton. The new members were Stacey Raupe, Dana Sisk, Staci Sharp, and Lisa Huster, At first the flags had a hard time getting everything together, but finally we did and performed well in the end. The band really had fun this year at everything they did and I hope they continue to play as well as well as they do. Marching Band Flags 31 32 Winter Activities Winter Activities 33 SPIRIT, HEY. Both cheering squads were excited to go with their teams to finals. State wrestling was in Hays and sub-state basketball in Hesston. The crowds were sometimes small but the teams could always count on the cheerleaders to be there. The cheerleaders did their best to bring the crowd and their teams out of the slumps. The cheerleaders did really well this year in supporting the teams. They made posters for the halls and decorated the player’s lockers. Basketball The booster club this year was a real big “boost” to our team spirit. They were always at the sporting events to cheer our teams to victory. The boosters also made sandwiches and gave pop to the teams after a game. For each sport, they brought a camera and took individual pictures for the players. This went over real well and it also made a little money for the club. We would like to thank the booster club for everything they have done. The coaches and the athletes really appreciate all the support they have given. Keep up the good work!!! Spirit 35 Row 1: Lezli Skinner (Mgr), James Pykiet. David High, Rob Reynolds. Coaches Rhodes and Grose tried some new programs this year. They used an instrument which measured a person's percentage of body fat to determine the amount of weight a wrestler could safely lose or gain. Another new aspect in the wrestling program was morning practices (which concentrated on conditioning), and shorter practices after school (which concentrated on technique). This year’s team was made up of five seniors, six juniors, ten sophomores, and five freshmen. The team worked well together, and accomplished a lot. State was held at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas. Douglass was well represented by seniors Ross Ayres, David High, Greg Kunz, and junior Dean Zaldivar. Ross Ayres placed second in I, II, III A State. Mr. Cottrell and Mr. Kinser were the two main figures in the team who helped the girls on and off of the court. They brought the girls together and told each of them what was expected of them during the games and practices. The two things that were asked of the girls were hard work and determination. The girls proved that they could achieve their goals by winning second place in the Sedan tournament. Even though the season ended with a seven and fourteen record, the girls enjoyed playing together. Womens Basketball 41 SENIOR Eugene Potts Chris Roberts BASKETBALL Sean Stovef Larry Carl Danny Williamson Basketball '84 KOYY Dream Team This year’s team consisted of twelve players. They ended the season with a record of 11-10. Even though the team suffered a loss in the first game of the season, they turned around and showed both stamina and endurance as they took first place in the Sedan Tournament. Other highlights of the season were beating Garden Plaine in the regular season and beating Cheney after losing to them earlier in the season. This year the players improved statistically against better competition. The biggest disappointments of the season were the loses to both Rose Hill and Conway Springs. The season ran true to most athletic seasons and had both peaks and valleys. According to Coach Gillaspie, “each person pretty will accepted the role that he was there to play and this led to the success of the team. The 7-7 record for the Junior Varsity was not indicative of the improvement that was made throughout the year. In the early part of the season there was a lapse of 1 week to 10 days between games and it made it‘difficult for the players to get back into the swing of things. Improvement is shown when one realizes that the JV won 4 out of their last 5 games and the one game that was lost was only lost by 2 points. This years Freshman team was in all actuality comprised of three sophomores. This was done to honor contracts and allow the team members to compete actively in the season. Overall the team made improvement in many areas, with the exception of the record. This improvement hopefully will carry over into next season. The effort and time which these young men put into the basketball program was greatly appreciated by the coacning staff, who are looking forward to next years season. 44 Basketball Percussion; Brad Clark, Steve Knowles, Juanita Hamilton, Norma Dunagan, Jennifer Parker, Kendra Harris. They began preparations for a good season by attending Super Star Drill Team Camp at Emporia State University last summer. There they learned many routines and earned more blue ribbons than any other squad in the four years at Douglass. The squad performed at home basketball and wrestling events. They worked especially hard to incorporate jazz and modern dance into their routines. This year's squad deserves the positive recognition that they have received and we look to seeing them again next year. 48 Pom Pon Back row: Staci Sharp. Ginger Martin. Coaches 49 COACHES CANDIDS 50 Spring Activities Spring Activities 51 This was DHS’s seventh year for having Academic Spirit Week. The week was set aside in spring. It consisted of the students taking a competency test, a school awareness test, an anything goes competition, reading shut down, current events competition, and speaker day. The seniors won most of the class competitions and came in first at the end of the week. The class received $50.00 for their treasury which went toward their skip trip. The class of '84 was also very proud to say that they’ve been the only class to win the anything goes competition every year they were in high school. Speaker day consisted of 22 speakers talking about various careers and hobbies. The students as well as the faculty enjoyed having them visit DHS this year. There were many nice and interesting comments. The week ended Friday, March 23, with an evening program in which the families of the students could witness most of the events of the week. The current events competition, the top act of the talent show and the awarding of the Outstanding Teacher of the Year highlighted the program. It was a very interesting and enjoyable week and we can all hope for an Academic Spirit Week just as good next year. 52 Academic Spirit Week 53 Girls: Kendra Harris, Lisa Huster. Norma Dunagan, Krissy Bell. Boys: Brad Bodine. Kevin Darter, Tim Pottorff. James Pykiet. HONOR KING AND QUEEN To be chosen as the class honor king and queen is a real achievement. This competition is to choose the boy and girl in each class who has done the most outstanding work in their class. Most of this award is based upon the students’ academic ability in the classroom. Points can also be accumulated by other activities such as being an F.H.A. member, president of a club, or a participant in any sport. Then the persons who had the overall highest points were nominated the Overall King and Queen. This year’s overall King was Tim Pottorff. Tim has been his class Honor King for the past four years and this is his first year for the overall winner. The overall Queen was Norma Dunagag. She has been the class Queen for two of her four years. This contest is held to push students to do the best they can in their class work. Overall - Norma Dunagan. Tim Pottorff 54 Honors Honors 55 D.H.S. TRACK GOES TO STATE This years track season got off to a slow start, in fact, some may have wondered whether it would ever start at all. Quite a few of the early track meets were rained out and had to be re-scheduled later in the season. This made the rest of the season very hectic for the athletes, who competed in 3 or 4 meets every week for the rest of the season. 1st row: Seniors - David High, Eric Wilhite, Chris Roberts, Tim Cash, Curtis Wei-shaar, Sean Stover, Danny Williamson, and Ross Ayres. 2nd row: Juniors - David Zaldivar, Jeff Houser, Frank Huster, Rod Davis, Tim Payton, and Kelly Carter. 3rd row: Sophomores - David Reynolds, Robbie Reynolds. Matt Morrow, Todd Hewlett. and Jeff Gondon. 4th row: Freshman - Mike Mahiandt, Brian Clark, Kevin Gu-lick. Jason Cathey, Jerry Houser, Renee Newcomb (mgr.), L. Kunz (mgr.). Despite the weather and scheduling problems, the two teams did exceptionally well. A large number of athletes qualified for the state track meet at W.S.U. These people were Andra Wilhite, Jeanine Woody, Danny Williamson, Albert Simon, Shawn Moore, Matt Morrow, Chris Roberts, and Robbie Reynolds. Although, all of the participants placed fairly well, Andra Wilhite brought home the only medal. Andra placed first in the 300 meter hurdles, making her the State Champion in that event. At this point we would like to recognize the coaches for all their support, and the time and effort that they put into the program. Mr. Cottrell, Mr. Renfro, and Mr. Rhodes did an excellent job in working with both the girls and boys teams. Also, a very special thanks goes to Mrs. Davis, who unfortunately won’t be coaching next year. Mrs. Davis has been the girls track coach for the last six years and will be greatly missed. Through her coaching and the efforts of the athletes the girls teams in the past have had a lost of success and we hope this success will continue under the new coach. Their sponsors were Mr. Cox and Mr. Eaton. The seniors started off by going to Stove’s house to party before departure. They all par-tied well into the morning hours until 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 1984, when they all went to the high school to board their bus. Everyone had a pretty rowdy bus ride down to Oklahoma City to the Pancake Parlor. After breakfast, they visited the zoo until around 11:30 a.m. They then boarded the bus again and headed for White Water, where everyone had a day of fun in the sun. The guys all enjoyed the string bikini scenery, and the girls, well, they enjoyed the sun. When the day came to a close, they all boarded the bus once again to eat dinner and to make the long trip home. They ate at Molly Murphey’s Steak House, which everyone said was a unique dining experience and highly recommended by the senior class. They arrived home at 11:30 Saturday night. Backs burned, tired, but satisfied. A trip well worth it and long tcCbe remembered. -lCU 'lv BOX 138 nni IOI acc KA NS AS 67039 Seniors 59 Danny Williamson Scan Siovcr....... In September, we sold knives, October we presented a carnival, and in November, we worked concession stands. For December we had a Christmas gift exchange. January brought elections for district officers. February was FHA week, March was the State meeting, and April and May brought elections for chapter officers and telling the up-coming freshmen about FHA. So you can see that FHA was fun but we did a lot of hard work, too. The objective of FHA is to help youth assume their roles in society through Home Economics education in areas of personal growth, family life, job preparation and community involvement. The theme for this year’s FHA-Hero chapter is “New Beginnings-Dare to Discover”. For the district meeting at Flinthills High School, our chapter entered the banner contest, poster contest, scrapbook contest, so we got to go to state meeting. Krissy Bell won the speech contest and Ginger Martin won the creed contest, which qualified them for the state meeting. The state meeting was at Salina, where we spent the night. The parlaw received a Good Rating, Ginger received a Good, and Krissy received an Excellent. 1st row: Kendra Harris-Vice President Tina Dunlap- Chap, and Dist. Middle row: Rana Frank, Lisa Hays, Annette Allen, Mrs. Myrkel. Front row: Wendy Grip-pando, Danny Williamson. The drama year started out at a peak but dropped discouragingly. It seemed as though the judges didn’t like the material. But they persevered and tried new techniques and new ideas. Although they got a 1 at regional- they received a 3 at state level. Several of the actors participated in individual and duet productions. Even though they thought they had prepared well for regionals, no one got a chance to go to state. Through five months of preparation, acting, and dress rehearsal, they achieved a sense of unity which helped them a great deal. In their own words, “No matter what happened, we stuck together.” This unity made it a learning experience for them all. MUSICAL ENSEMBLES AND SOLOS Flute Trio Sax Quartet Left to Right: Krissy Bell. You say, “of course they do; they have to give the kids an education.” But they have even more of a responsibility than they may realize. The teachers and staff are preparing the students for high school activities. This may not seem like an important job, but it is. Thank you junior high teachers and staff. fACUITY Robert Barr Dorothy Bernson William Bush David Cox Debra Davis Bruce Grose Gida Perisho Catherine Pottorff Donald Rucker Robert Swigart This is a very special teacher; she has taught at Douglass schools for 27 years. When you sit down and think about it, she has seen 14 graduating classes which she has taught. I can think back, and I’m sure almost everyone can, to when Mrs. Jenkins taught us our ABC’s and how to count our 1-2-3’s. Mrs. Jenkins is going to retire this year, and we want to thank Mrs. Jenkins for all of her time and effort at the Douglass public schools. This yearbook is about togetherness and the memories it held. I would like to thank the yearbook staff for putting up with me and each other. Also, I would like to thank Jo Jennings for the dedication to the yearbook and the staff. Everyone needs a push and Jo was there to make this yearbook a success. The student body and teachers are never forgotten in our appreciation. After all, who would we take pictures of if it wasn't for them. Every picture in this yearbook was taken to catch the past years events. When you look at a picture ask yourself who may have taken it. I’ll tell you, it was someone who cared and wanted to capture a memory for you. Good Luck Friends With All My Love, Teresa Hewlett Closing 109 Adams. Kristi (10) 16. 25. 31. 45. 56. 72. 74. 77 Adams.
