Aft Memories '82 Douglass High School 1st And Hwy 77 Douglass, Kansas 67039 MEMORIES Mr. Cottrell has probably been the most influential teacher to all his students at DHS. He seems to care for every students future. He is willing to help a student in any way he can. Mr. Cottrell has been at DHS the longest. Many of his students feel he has played a large part during their years at DHS. He has helped them in many ways to be able to face the sometimes cruel world. A couple of com- Many Thanks And Our Best Wishes Always D.H.S. '82 ments from his students were, He seems to care about what happens to us after we get out of school. He prepares us for life. He has made me grow up alot, and I think he is a good teacher by the way he runs his classes. The straight-forwardness and helpful ways of a teacher like Mr. Cottrell has helped many students at DHS. A man like Mr. Fred Cottrell deserves this special recognition. Thanks again. It was the time of football games and sweaters and writing your special one love letters, eating at Pizza Hut and sneaking in late Friday nights makes us wonder if we'll ever learn whats wrong and whats right. The years of finding ourselves and experiencing things for the first time. But we know we will leave those times behind time will erase our most important years, some of us may laugh and some may shed tears and then there's our friends who said they'll keep in touch knowing how long we, as friends, were putting up with so much. There was the prom, senior trip, and now graduation, really makes us feel sad but those were the times of being happy and mad Well, its this time when we remember, the last day of May but, we'll remember all the memories of yesterday. 4 5 Senior Accomplishments MICHELLE ANDERSON Cheerleader 2,3,4, Head Basketball 3,4; FHA 1,2,3,4, Secretary 4; Pep Club 2,3,4; National Honor Society 2,3,4, Secretary 4; Stuco 3,4, Junior Class Representative 3, Secretary 4; WAC 2,3,4; Volleyball 1; Band 1,2,4; Basketball Homecoming Queen 3; Aide 3,4. Everyone sat quietly as the salutatorian, Pam Elswick, gave her speech to the graduating class of 1982. Pam recalled memories of the past years they had spent together and her feelings of leaving DHS were put into words with a poem she recited. Mick Rausch, the valedictorian, walked calmly to the podium as he unfolded his notes for his speech. He spoke of the graduating class as a whole. He described how much closer he thought his class was than any other class. “Whenever we had a class meeting our meetings were longer than the other classes ... Both the salutatorian and valedictorian received a large round of applause, not only for the speeches they delivered, but also for the messages they got across. Salutatorian Pam Elswick The invocation was given by Gary Bowie of the Christian Church and the Benediction was given by William Scott of the Baptist Church. The Commencement Address was given by the Executive Secretary of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, Nelson Hartman. He was introduced by the Superintendent of Douglass Schools, Marvin Sisk. High School Principal, William Parker, presented the class while James Ford gave them their diplomas. 14 Junior . . Senior Prom 1982 Looking for the lights Somewhere they're shining Looking for the lights That silver lining Looking for the lights Sometimes you hate it Sometimes you love it Sometimes you don't know What to think of it Nobody said it was easy Nobody said it was Nobody said it — Now is no time to give up Looking for the lights Months ahead of time the junior class was carefully planning the big event. Ordering, organizing, ideas, thoughts and many disagreements! As the time grew nearer and the day before was upon them, all the juniors were faced with the big task. The Gymnasium! The big, empty gym became a madhouse with tape, streamers, and scissors strung all over. The juniors worked very hard and faithfully through the night and came back early the next morning. Finally they had accomplished the big task. The big, empty gym had turned into a Tropical Splendor. The time had come for all. The night of April 17, 1982 had juniors, seniors, faculty and staff out Looking for the Lights. Before all had a chance to dig into the Hawaiian buffet, the senior class presented their sponsors an Orchid and thanked them for all the support they had given to them. President of the Junior Class, Jonny Condon, gave the Welcome. The President of the Senior Class, Cassandra Bell, gave the Response. Entertainment was given by Mike Lowery and Cynthia Hamilton. They sang Out Here on My Own. Mr. Parker give the Comments and Mr. Donley gave the Closing. After all had a chance to eat and talk, it was off to the Prom. All were surprised when the gym doors opened and they saw a Tropical Delight; fountains, palm trees, grass huts, fish nets-the whole works. Music was provided by Twenty-first Century Sound. The whole night was truly a Tropical Delight. 17 JUNIORS Junior Officers: Standing, Janet Allard, Ra-shelle Leivian, Sponsors, Cheryl Jones, Sec.-Tres., Kelli Stevenson, Stuco., Eric Allen, Stuco., Shawna Valentine, Vice-Pres., not pictured Jonny Condon, Pres. The juniors are a unique class with a style all their own. Each member has contributed to the success of Douglass High School in some way which will always be remembered. They are a class that is never lacking energy. They have a positive outlook toward the future. With a class like the juniors, how could there be anything besides a brighter tomorrow. A high percentage of the class is active in extra-curricular activities such as volleyball, football, basketball, track, baseball, and cheerleading. They haven't had any money making projects this year, but they have worked in concessions. The freshmen have four required classes and two elective classes. The required classes are: algebra, English I and a combination class of driver's ed., home ec., and basic skills. Their sponsor, Mr. Mykel, supports them and helps them each to be better individuals. Booster Club Virginia Macy — 1981-1982 Booster Club President The Booster Club this year did many things to support D.H.S. Athletes. They held a “Dunk the Coaches and Faculty Day with a free ice cream and cake social. They also honored the Coaches on Coaches Day by taking them to the Coachman Inn in Derby for supper. The Boosters had many fund raising projects. For the not on home territory games the Boosters fixed sandwiches, cookies and pop for the athletes, managers and coaches. They purchased a billboard for the High School lawn to display the events that take place at school. For the past three years the Booster Club has held the Athletic Banquet at the High School in honor of the athletes and coaches. This year's officers were Virginia Macy — President, Lucinda Green — Vice President, Georgia Bergley — Secretary Treasurer, and Connie Rausch — Editor. 29 First row-Chuck Kobbe, Vance Price, Gary Lanier, Carl Brumbaugh, Randy Rounkles, Jeff Polk, David Zaldivar, Mike Rausch, Second row-Gary Roberts, Chris Roberts, David High, Don Cotter, Bryan Hollenback, Rob Conde, Tim Carr, Jonny Condon, Terry Little, Matt Hill, Shelby Green, Third row-Dean Zaldivar, Albert Simon, Rod Davis, Shawn Moore, Drew Valentine, Eugene Potts, Danny Williamson, Dane Rounkles Football '81 The Douglass Bulldogs were disappointed with a season of five wins and four loses. Unfortunately, this record kept the Bulldogs from going to any play-off games. There were eight senior football players on the team for the season. Although the season was not what was expected, four players received recognition. Three of them captured league titles. Honored with an All League title was senior Mike Rausch. He played tackle for the Bulldogs during the 1981 season. In addition, he is a four-year letterman in football. The Douglass student body was not too surprised to learn that Mike had signed an intent to accept a football scholarship with Southwestern College in Winfield. Senior Gary Lanier, tailback, was nominated All League Honorable Mention. Joining him was senior, Chuck Kobbe, split end. The only returning player who received an Honorable Mention was Sophomore Eugene Potts, Fullback. Coaches Corner The Douglass High School football program has developed a strong tradition over the past few years, and it has achieved a winning percentage that few have ever equalled in the state of Kansas. It has been the goal of the coaching staff to emphasize the human qualities necessary to make a positive contrubution to our society in the process. As Head Football Coach, I wish to thank all the athletes and boosters who have made this venture possible. 30 Front Row: Valerie Seal; Second Row: Kim Gibson, Robin Rose, Kathy Davis, Marie Bergley; Third Row; Terri Simon, Serena Petrie, J.P. Robin Rose and Valerie Seal have been involved in high school volleyball for four years. The season had a good deal of excitement because of the number of games played. The many hours of practice were under the direction of Coach Debbie Davis. She was assisted for this first year by Coach Kevin Mykel. Loud rings of shouts such as move faster, hustle, keep your knees flexed, concentrate on the ball, and act like you know what you are doing ' were heard by all players. It seemed as if the hours spent in reaction drills would never end. We did learn to fall down without skinning our knees. 32 Athletic Football DHS OPP 8 Garden Plain 0 0 Clearwater 32 14 Conway Springs 21 13 Cheney 0 22 Medicine Lodge 6 6 South Barber 7 42 Bluestem 0 7 Belle Plaine 12 39 West Elk 0 DHS Boys Basketball OPP 46 Central 37 55 Argonia 43 53 Garden Plain 63 39 Augusta 51 51 Conway Springs 55 50 Cheney 75 43 Caldwell 39 73 Belle Plaine 52 45 Halstead Tournament-Haven 51 42 Halstead Tournament-Lyons 55 56 Rose Hill 50 41 Bluestem 47 66 South Barber 70 80 Andover 52 42 Rose Hill 68 47 Conway Springs 50 50 Oxford 43 55 Medicine Lodge 58 51 Burlington-Substate 52 Wrestling DHS OPP 30 Andale 29 20 Andale 33 33 Goddard 21 38 Wellington 20 32 Augusta 31 27 Andover 26 14 Valley Center 47 21 Chapparal 35 24 Clearwater 46 4th Goodwill Tournament 5th Augusta Tournament 3rd Goddard Tournament 1st Regional Tournament 1st Substate Tournament 6th State Tournament Girls Basketball DHS OPP 32 Central 23 39 Garden Plain 49 38 Augusta 49 35 Conway Springs 40 34 Cheney 49 29 Belle Plaine 58 27 Rose Hill 21 36 McPherson 28 31 Augusta 53 24 Rose Hill 29 19 Bluestem 25 35 Andover 36 39 South Barber 16 27 Oxford 35 27 Rose Hill 36 25 Conway Springs 30 39 Caldwell 29 35 Berean Academy 37 35 Medicine Lodge 46 24 Bluestem 47 34 Scoreboard Volleyball DHS OPP 0 (10,15) Udall (15,17) 2 0 (6,6) Belle Plaine (15,15) 2 0 (13,8) Belle Plaine (15,15) 2 0 (5,7) Rose Hill (15,15) 2 0 (11,10) Udall (15,15) 2 0 (6,1) Mulvane (15,15) 2 2 (15,8,15) Oxford (3,15,4) 1 2 (15,13,15) Udall (13,15,11) 1 0 (12,11) West Elk (15,15) 2 2 (15,15) Hamilton (3,7) 0 :i 0(14,11) Andale (15,15) 2 0 (1,3) Augusta (15,15) 2 0 (14,6) Mulvane (15,15) 2 0 (11,13) Medicine Lodge (15,15) 2 : 0(10,11) Conway Springs (15,15) 2 2 (15,15) South Barber (7,4) 0 2 (15,15) Cheney (8,11) 0 0 (0,9) Andale (15,15) 2 0 (13,5) Derby (15,15) 2 0 (7,12) Winfield (15,15) 2 0 (13,5) Garden Plain (15,15) 2 1 (4,17,13) Central Christian (15,15,15) 2 0 (5,8) Belle Plaine (15,15) 2 0 (5,5) Belle Plaine (15,15) 2 Boys Track 1st Remington 2nd Belle Plaine 1st Cheney 2nd Garden Plain 1st Rose Hill 1st Bluestem 2nd Oxford 1st Fresh man-Sophomore 4th League 2nd Regional 12th State Baseball DATE Circle 3-29 Mulvane 4-1 Valley Cen- 4-5 ter 4-15 Goddard 4-19 Rose Hill 4-22 Augusta 4-26 Central 4-29 West Elk Girls Track 3rd Belle Plaine Invitational 3rd Cheney Invitational 2nd Rose Hill Invitational 1st Bluestem Invitational 2nd Oxford Invitational 35 Back Row: Coach Kevin Mykel, Coach Jim Pykiet, Jeff Wakefield, Jeff Polk, Mark Bergley, Eric Allen, Chuck Kobbe, Carey Barnes, Coach Dan Burke, Front Row: Colleen Bannon, Eugene Potts, Gary Lanier, Sean Stover, Shelby Green, Vance Price, Shawna Valentine Boys Basketball Although the Boys Basketball team held a 7-12 record this year, many ac-complishments were made. The coaches thought the team steadily improved throughout the season and appreciated the hard work each player contributed. The highest Bulldog performance was beating Andover 80-52 the highest score at Douglass. The number one greatest accomplishment for the Bulldog was defeating Ro-sehill at Rosehill which had not been done in seven years! 37 Coaches Corner As a teacher and coach for the past seven years at Douglass, I wish the very best to all the students and people with whom I have become acquainted. As a teacher I would hope that I taught you all something more than what is written in a textbook. As a coach I hope that I instilled the burning desire not to quit, and the courage to go through problem times with faith and determination. In closing my sincere thanks for letting me be a small part of your lives, for you cannot take away the past but will look toward the future with fond memories that occured when I walked into the doors of D.H.S. seven years ago. The record doesn't look impressive at first glance. A-Team finished with 5 wins and 4 losses. But a closer look reveals how close many of the games really were. Fifteen girls finished the season. There were five seniors, four juniors, three sophomores, and three freshmen. Managers were juniors, Shawna Valentine and Colleen Bannon. Seniors Val Seal and Shelly Stone who have played for the Bulldogs four years, were selected as members of the KOVY Dream Team. 40 Varsity Girls Basketball KOYY radio station in El Dorado selected their Dream Team members from area schools. The girls were honored at a banquet at Butler County Comunity College. In addition, Shelly Stone was nominated to the All-League Second Team. The five seniors, Shelly Stone, Val Seal, Mary Wright, Brenda Raupe, and Kathy Davis were a big help to the under-classmen, especially the freshman who had to adapt to the new style of high school basketball. A philosophy developed and practiced by the girls was to never quit. Front Row: Colleen Bannon, manager. The DHS cheerleaders started working toward a successful year the week after they were elected. Early in June, they started the long, hard struggle to make money for camp in July. With Mr. Sisk standing over the cheerleaders on the football field, with a club in his hands, they pulled weeds for well over six hours. He paced up and down the field yelling, This field will look so nice this year, Oh, you missed one! OOPS! Here's one lone weed. As they painted the football bleachers, they found that it wasn't a clean task. Douglass High School now had eleven purple cheerleaders. The clean, shiny buses USD 396 used to start out the year gave the cheerleaders credit for their appearance. A few people thought that maybe it was a Cheerleader wash rather than a Bus wash. As if this wasn't enough to keep tham busy, the cheerleaders sponsored a work day to earn extra money. Practices began for the girls to prepare for camp. Routines, cheers, and chants were in production. Finally the big day arrived! Eleven excited cheerleaders with five suitcases each, were packed into the mini bus. With their crash helmets on, they were prepared for Mrs. Leivian to drive them to Emporia. Upon arrival, the girls found that Mrs. Leivian had a split personality. Smashed pretzels mysteriously began to appear in the cheerleaders beds — the other side of Mrs. L. At the first football game, the cheerleaders were more enthusiastic than ever before. It poured down rain, but that did not stop them. Being very dedicated, they cheered right on! Two seasons later, they were totally exhausted but all the hard work had paid off. The season had been very successful. The six senior cheerleaders all greatly regretted becoming oldies as the cheerleaders for 1982-1983 were chosen.- Pam Elswick, Queen Kim Gilbert, Sheri Coombes Vance Price, Pam Elswick, Chuck Kobbe, Mike Rausch, Kim Gilbert, Gary Lanier, Jeff Polk, Sheri Coombes, David Zaldivar Only For You The 1981-82 football homecoming theme for the evening was only for You . FHA, Student Council and various people made and painted the cloud like float used for the evening of October 23, 1981. Mr. and Mrs. Eric Caster loaned their three year old bulldog, Fred, to add to the festivities. Each candidate and the reigning queen was escorted by two senior football players. Michelle Ver-milyea was led onto the field by Randy Rounkles and Carl Brumbaugh. Sheri Coombes was accompanied by Jeff Polk and David Zaldivar. Pam Elswick was guided onto the field by Vance Price and Chuck Kobbe. Not only was Kim Gilbert flanked by Mike Rausch and Gary Lanier, but she was crowned by them before a large home crowd. The evening excitement was heightened when the Douglass Bulldogs scored a victory over the Bluestem Lions. The evening's activities were completed with a homecoming dance after the game. We celebrated the evening to the music of Century 21 Light and Sound. 55 Just Once For the 1981-82 homecoming festivities, former basketball queens were invited to take part in the ceremonies. The theme was I've Been Waiting For A Girl Like You . The air was tense, but there was a certain friendliness about it. Which girl would it be? Syd, Pam, or Vicky? Each girl was secretly wishing the other ones luck. Queens from former years attended the ceremony. Pam truth came nearer. The 14 members and their sponsor enjoyed various activities through the year. Roller skating at Winfield was their first activity to start off a new year. Visiting the nursing home was a regular occasion so on Halloween and Thanksgiving they decorated the halls and lobby to brighten up the patients lives. The Y-Teens fall conference was in Haviland where Tori Bryan ran for Junior Board Member. Unfortunately, she did not acquire this position. The girls decorated the school for Christmas which included a Christmas tree in the Commons Area. They also went caroling at the nursing home and surrounding areas. Special occasions for the Y-Teens was National Y-Teens Week. Cookies were made for all the teachers and the secretary, Connie Coombes, received flowers. National YWCA Week was also celebrated. Regional YWCA director, Jan Schaible, spoke to the Y-Teens. Two of the activities were ice skating and picking up the trash on the school grounds. One of the purposes of F.H.A. is to promote understanding between youth and adults. The chapter members wrote and presented a skit to the elementary students on the dangers of shoplifting. The Attorney General of the State of Kansas, Robert Stephen, was asked to be the guest of our chapter by Cassandra Bell. Mr. Stephen talked to the entire student body about democracy and how the understanding between youth and adults was essential. Each chapter was asked to raise a quota of money to contribute to the National Building Fund for the new F.H.A. headquarters to the built in Reston, Virginia. Our local chapter sponsored a carnival and earned enough money to meet our quota. The Douglass chapter advisor, Mrs. Judy Baldridge, commented on F.H.A. F.H.A. is the most rewarding and worthwhile activity I sponsor. The real growth I see in the individual through goal setting and the work of our chapter is fantastic. The take-over of a new office. Well it is not! Band students put in not only a lot of hard work but also a lot of time and devotion. Many people who are in such things as Flags, Stage Band, Solo's and Ensembles put in much hard work before and after school. This year the Douglass High School Band recieved a two at State. This puts them in the top fivebands in the state of Kansas. There were many who lettered in band this year. To Letter you have to be in a solo, ensemble or stage band. She has to know how to do a little bit of everything-from giving change, to fixing the copy machine, to contacting the newspaper about school news. Connie has been working at the school for four years and she is really dedicated to her work. She arrives early in the morning and leaves long after most kids have gone home. When asked what she likes best about her job, she says she likes being around the students. On the other hand, she added that the only part about her job that frustrates her is getting behind in her work. The kids at Douglass High really feel that she is someone they can count on when they are in need of help. She takes money for bills, hands out lunch cards, and takes care of the office aides. In short, she is a vital part of the smooth running of this school. Mr. Parker has been with Douglass High School for two years now. Not only does he perform the everyday tasks of a principal, but he's also been everything from a doctor to a middleman. When asked what he likes best about his job here, he says he likes Douglass because it's a smaller school. Now that he's back to a smaller one, he's happier. He added that his regrets are just like those of the students. He has days when he would like to leave and never see anyone again. But he also has days where he has a lot of fun. His comments on how this school year went are good ones and he hopes that next year will be as good. 78 Counselor And Library 79 Janet Allard Tamara Mykel John Eaton Kevin Mykel 80 Those High School Teachers . . . Faced with driving a bus full of noisy children to school many would feel very alarmed. We are indeed grateful that there are some who take pride and enjoy doing so. The mere thought of cooking for a crowd of between four and five hundred would bring a pool of tear to many a eye. Yet the food service people of our district handle the situation with great ease. Just imagine the idea of housekeeping for a living. Though the janitors of the Douglass Schools keep the schools not only looking good but running smooth and in tip-top condition. 86 e Junior High And Elementary Bob Swigart, Principal Many times, the elementary and junior high students are met at the bus stops by the friendly face of Mr. Bob Swigart. Some day as perhaps their own children go to school, these same students will recall the extra mile that their principal walked. Nor is it unusual for this man to take the time to stop a student in the hall and just merely ask how things are going. Sad though it may be, the hug he gives some of the younger ones may be the only hugs they ever get.
