Success :'Douglass Migh School Post Office ft ok 158 Douglass, Kansas 67039 -1 The dream of life Each of us dream of success, but all in a different way. Some by what they learn and, some by what they say. Success is a schedule of events though many, it passes by. For some it comes easy, but others have to try. At times trying is hard, but in the end you’ll know. The feeling of success, where ever you may go! Contents Seniors 6 Juniors 17 Sophomores 20 Freshmen 23 Sports 26 Activities 43 Organizations 57 Academics 67 Junior High Grades 76 Index 94 Success Success can not be measured in the amount of your wins or losses but by the intent of the action put forth in the activity. Success can be accomplished through shear determination and an undieing will to succeed. Success in ones self pride and ability will come if the party involved so desires the sought after reward. The reward is to be accepted and appreciated for the true worth of the accomplished. Succeed and you will be Successful Jeff Valentine Jeri and Renae discuss the coming erent. Although the Douglass basketball season was off to a slow start, they were demonstrating good ball playing by the last six to eight games. This is the second year that the bulldogs hare been beaten in the substate finals. Losing was a disappointment for everyone. However, the team’s success was realized because each member was able to get their act together and operate as a unit. The team expresses their enthusiasm for their coaches, Dan Burke and Jim Pykiet because they worked the team hard and expected the best from them. In this way the coaches prepared their team for each game. 34 Boys Basketball Coach Crumhliss, standing, Matthew Green, Sean Stover, Danny Williamson, Jeff Wakefield, Darin Valentine, Tra is Otis, Steve Knowles, Chris Roberts Top Row: Colleen Bannon. Even though their record was 6-14, they measured success by what they learned and the fun they had. This was Fred Cottrell’s first year coaching high school girls. It was David Cox’s first at Douglass. The girls really put out effort because these two men expected it from them. The respect the coaches have was earned through many long hours of perseverance. Besides coaches and players, there were two other very important people. Colleen Bannon and Shawna Valentine, the managers. They were in charge of keeping the loose ends pulled together. The B-team had the best record ever for Douglass. They were extremely proud of 5-5 record. There were 4 Seniors, 5 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, and 3 Freshmen. They became very close and learned to be a family and play like a team. 37 Row I: Brian llollenback, Terry Little, Don Cotter, Brian Zimmerman, Ronnie Morgan, David High, Scott Shaver, Ross Ayers, Row 2: Mr. Provence, Steve Weishaar, Jason Toon, Mike Rausch, Carl Brumbaugh, Randy Runkles, David Zaldivar. We were able to take our whole team to sub-state and become cochampions with Clearwater after coming away with second place in regionals. We then went on to state with seven wrestlers. We had two place at state, who were David Wright in third place and Brian Zimmerman in fourth. The wrestling cheerleaders this year were, Cassandra Bell, Pam Elswick and Kim Gilbert. When asked what was most memorable for Pam during the 1980-81 wrestling season she replied, “The coaches, Mr. Provence for instance was always joking around with us. Once on the way back from Andover he pretended the bus was out of gas and told the cheerleaders they could pick one of two things to do if they ran out of gas. They could push the bus or kiss all the wrestlers, what a choice!” Kims most memorable time was at state. There was almost always something going on. At the Holidome we all relaxed in the pool area, and at the hotel we stayed at we just plain ran around. The rest of our time was spent cheering on our guys. I know we all were proud to have been able to cheer on the wrestling team this year.” Cassandra chose Wrestling Homecoming as her most memorable thing about wrestling. She said, “I knew the evening would be something to remember when the lights wept out during the matches. The gym was totally black atid a mass of confusion. After the lights were turned on we got fired up and cheered from the bleachers, in our dresses and coursages. It was a night I’ll never forget. ” SPIRIT Sometimes wrestlers find the hardest part is waiting. Scholarship winner Ronnie Morgan. With only fire returning veterans, including the two seniors, who lead the track team since their sophomore year, they competed in great style. The rest of the team included four sophomores and three freshmen. This year we had a wide range of events in the track meets. We were rewarded for our efforts in receiving second place at the Ro-sehill Invitational and bringing home a trophy. What would high school football be without those who put words and actions to the feelings that encompass the fans? Valerie Seal Michelle Anderson Kelly Williams, head football mm V 9 Kelly Williams, captain of the football cheerleaders this year, has been a cheerleader for four years. We will miss Kelly’s enthusiasm and dedication. Kelly said, “Cheerleading has given me a goal, something to strive for, it is a challenge. 4s a very competitive person, I decided to become the best possible cheerleader I could be. A lot of people think of cheerleading as a bunch of girls jumping around in short skirts. If these people could only know about the hard work put into cheerleading and also about the enjoyment and fullfillment received from it.” 44 Wrestling Cheerleaders Pam Els wick Kim Gilbert Cassandra Bell Norma Dunagan 80-81 Cheerleading DHS Cheerleaders sold purple and gold shakers this year beginning with the football season. It was an unusual event when the wrestling and basketball cheerleaders combined to perform a routine to music. The wrestling squad hosted numerous hospitality rooms for visiting schools. They combined with the other cheerleaders for a “good luck99 cheer during the regional wrestling tournament. In Douglass we have a number of adults who are active spectators in the school happenings. Our parents, teachers and older friends share some very memorable events with us. In this way we have success because we are able to prove mostly to ourselves that we can become a successful human being. By sharing, caring, and supporting us, our adult friends and relatives teach us something about giving to others. A person gets down in the dumps and doesn’t feel like doing school work. Three years ago six of the school faculty got together and devised a way to interest high school kids in their school work and also prepare them for choosing a career later in life. One week out of the school year is set aside for Academic Spirit Week. Academic Spirit Week is a week of games, special tests, and interesting speakers. By the time Academic Spirit Week is over, everyone is ready to calm down and get back to work. VIP’s Often very little tribute is shown towards the people who keep our facility functioning.
