Students marched to the down-town area that day during noon, carrying banners proclaiming their support for Earth Day. The demonstration was organized entirely by students, and was the outgrowth of discussions begun in the Junior English class. Debbie Bare was demonstration director and gave one of the speeches. A special song with words by Lonnie Lee was sung by Tim DeVaughan, Tony Vandergriff, Joe Wooldridge, Lonnie Lee. The song protested water pol- lution. Then Vicki Taylor read the twenty-third psalm. Then Jeanea March read this poem by Ken Miller, a junior at D. H. S. Students had three goals in mind while conducting the demonstration. They wanted to help make people aware of the pollution problem, they wanted people to know that the students are aware of the problems and that they really have a serious concern about the situation. ECOLOGICAL POEM Remember, mankind, we are all of the earth. To her we owe everything, from our moment of birth. From the first little breath to the last gasp of air, The earth is our mother--seems little we care. For she never asks, she knows only to give. So that all of mankind may prosper and live. Yet now she is asking, she cries in despair, For we're killing her fish, polluting her air. The pride of man, she makes one last cry, If me you destroy, you too will die. .... by Ken Miller 80 GRADES E Jfi kindef FIRST ROW: Gina Fisher, James Winzer, Michelle Anderson, Lawava White, Mrs. Gaylor.
