CLASS HISTORY The Seniors of 1966 entered the grand estate of Douglass High in September of 1962. Our class numbered 50 and was officially initiated by the seniors of '63 by wearing crazy clothes and, crooning to them to the tune of Yankee Doodle. Our class officers were Vicki Comelison-President, Larry Bowcrs-Vicc President, Roger Reheis-Secretary. Mr. Broyles was our class sponsor. The freshmen were very active in sports and activities. Larry Bowers, Larry Alley, Pat Choens, Ronnie Howard, Dennis Edwards, Roy Craft, Bill Rhodes, Ollie Belt, Mark Ward, Cary Schaul, Roger Reheis, Arthur Jenkinson, Steve Edwards, Fred Darter, Terry Mauk, Jerry Randall, Randy Moore, Terry DeVaughan, Jim Ratliff, and John Totty participated in sports. Larry Bowers made the A Team in Football and Basketball. Sara Beal and Linda Newman were elected Student Council Representatives for the freshman class. Larry Bowers, Ronnie Howard, Terry DeVaughan, Fred Darter, Terry Mauk, Mark Ward, Sally Mauk, Sara Beal, Margaret Straw, Cay Ann Joy, Carolyn Shaver, Vicki Comelison, Maxine MacKay, Deanne Daniels, Kirby Bucher, Cris Cooley, Linda Newman, Mary Lou Bcrndsen, Rita Hayes, Cynthia Banfill, Glenda Carl, Linda Brewer, Martha McNown and Connie Cooley participated in the Music Festival. Sally Mauk and Sara Beal were Band Queen Candidates. Larry Bowers and Terry DeVaughan were Band Queen Escorts. Cary Schaul left our class at the beginning of the 2nd Semester. Donna Lively, Phyllis Lively, Dick Ross, and Carolyn Schaver also left our class during the year. Mike Patterson joined our class the 2nd semester. At the beginning of our Sophomore year our class numbered 45. During the year Roy Williams, Connie Dudgeon, Anita Donnelley and Kay Heflin joined the class bringing the total to 49. The Sophomore Class officers were Mary Lou Berndsen-President, Cay Ann Joy-Vice President, Sally Mauk-Secretary, Larry Alley-Reporter. Miss Lutz and Mr. Severin were our class sponsors. The Sophomores were again very active in sports and activities. Larry Bowers, Larry Alley, Fred Darter, Terry DeVaughan, Dennis Edwards, Ronnie Howard, Arthur Jenkinson, Terry Mauk, Mike Patterson, Jim Ratliff, Roger Reheis, Bill Rhodes, Dale Salisbury, John Totty, Mark Ward, Roy Craft, and Steve Edwards went out for athletics. Larry Bowers made the A Team in Football and Basketball. Larry also was named to the All-League Football Team and was selected Most Valuable Back in the League. Margaret Straw, Dianne Daniels, Jane Pierson, Terry DeVaughan, Larry Bowers, Kirby Bucher, Sara Beal, Mary Lou Bcrndsen, Linda Cirrens, Cay Ann Joy, Vicki Comelison, Connie Dudgeon, Cynthia Banfill, Sally Mauk, Fred Darter, Clenda Carl, Connie Cooley, Cris Cooley, Linda Newman, Linda Brewer, Maxine MacKay, Terry Mauk, Ron Howard, Mark Ward, Anita Donnelley participated in the Music Festival. Terry DeVaughan, Margaret Straw, and Linda Brewer were in the Dance Band. Terry DeVaughan, Cris Cooley, Sally Mauk, and Jimmy Ratliff were our Student Council Representatives. Cris Cooley was chosen Cheerleader. Sara Beal was chosen twiler and also was a Band Queen Candidate. Ronnie Howard and Terry DeVaughan were Band Queen Escorts. Sara Beal, Maxine MacKay, and Mary Lou Berndsen were in the Dramatics Club. During the year Roy Williams, Roberta Hendrix, Larry Wilson, Rita Hayes, Kenneth Hayes and Dale Salisbury left our class. Tire start of our Junior year our class numbered 47. Lynn Hankins, Stanley Williams, and Don Strong joined our class. Class officers were: Prcsidcnt-Fred Darter, Vice-President-Sally Mauk, Treasurer-Cris Cooley, Sarg. at Arms-Terry DeVaughan, and Reporters-Linda Cirrens and Anita Donnelley. Mrs. Terrill and Mrs. Owens were our class sponsors. Mike Patterson, Larry Bowers, Ronnie Howard, Roger Reheis, Mark Ward, Steve Edwards, Dennis Edwards, and Arthur Jenkinson went out for football. Larry Alley was named All-League Center. Cris Cooley and Linda Cirrens were Football Queen Candidates. Larry Bowers. Mike Patterson, Jimmy Ratliff, Jerry Randall and Don Strong went out for basketball. Larry, Mike and Jimmy were on the A team. Cris Cooley was crowned Basketball Queen. Linda Cirrens and Connie Cooley were attendants. Ronnie Howard, Bill Rhodes, Ronnie Hall, Larry Alley, Roy Craft, Gregg Parsons, and Terry Mauk went out for Wrestling. Terry Mauk, Larry Alley, Larry Bowers, Ronnie Howard, Mark Ward, Roy Craft, Terry DeVaughan, Fred Darter, and Jimmy Ratliff went out for Track. Terry Mauk and Larry Bowers were on the Mile Relay Team that set a school and Regional record of 3 minutes 32.6 seconds. Mark Ward set a league and school record in the pole vault with a vault of 12 feet 2 inches. Larry Alley set a school record in High Jump with a jump of 5 feet 10 inches. Mary Berndsen, Sara Beal and Maxine MacKay were in the Dramatics Club. Sara went to State and received a rating of II. Cris Cooley and Linda Cirrens were chosen cheerleaders. Connie Cooley, Mark Ward, Larry Bowers, Roger Reheis, Cay Ann Joy, Sally McCune, Linda Newman, Linda Cirrens, Diane Daniels, Anita Donnelley, Kirby Bucher, Fred Darter, Ronnie Howard, Cris Cooley, Larry Alley, Terry Mauk, Clenda Carl, Maxine MacKay, Sally Mauk, Cynthia Banfill, Vicki Comelison, Sara Beal, Linda Brewer, Mary Bemd- sen, Terry DeVaughan, Margaret Straw and Don Strong, participated in the Music Festival. Sara Beal was chosen Band Queen and was crowned by Terry DeVaughan. Highlights of the Junior year were the Junior-Senior Banquet and the Junior Play. The auditorium was turned in for a fairyland for the theme Fairy Land Romance. The Junior Play was called Mumbo Jumbo . It was well presented and received good acclamation from everyone. At the beginning of our best and greatest year of high school our class numbered 46. Sherri Wyatt, Jerry Wilhelm, and Nancy Somers joined our class. During the year John Totty and Jerry Wilhelm left our class. The class officers were: President-Terry DeVaughan, Vice-President -Larry Alley, Sec.-Treas. Cris Cooley, Sargeant-at-Arms-Cary Schaul. Class Sponsors were Mr. Miller and Mr. Darter. The Senior Student Council Representatives were Terry DeVaughan, Larry Alley, Jimmy Ratliff, and Cris Cooley. Terry was elected President, Jimmy-Vicc-Presidcnt, Cris-Sec. -Treas. and Larry-Publicity Director. Fred Darter, Larry Bowers, Mark Ward, Roger Reheis, Ollie Belt, Ronald Howard, Bill Rhodes, Terry Mauk, Mike Patterson, Larry Alley, Roy Craft, Dennis Edwards, and Cary Schaul went out for football. Larry Bowers was Most Valuable Back in the league, Mike Patterson was Most Valuable Lineman. and Larry Alley was All League Center. Cris Cooley and Linda Cirrens were football queen candidates. Connie Cooley was chosen Football Queen. All the Senior girls participated in the Powder Puff football game, in which they demolished the underclassmen 28-0. Don Strong, Terry Mauk, Mike Patterson, Fred Darter, Jim Ratliff, Jerry Randall, and Terry DeVaughan went out for Basketball. All were on the A Team. Connie Cooley and Cris Cooley were basketball queen candidates. Vicki Comelison was chosen Basketball Queen. Dennis Edwards, Ronnie Hall, Larry Bowers, Bill Rhodes, Larry Alley, Roy Craft, and Ronnie were varsity wrestlers. Bill Rhodes, Larry Alley, and Ronnie Howard took first in the District and Regional Tournaments. Ronnie Hall took second in the District. Roy Craft took second in District and Regional. Larry Alley, Roy Craft, Ronnie Howard, and Bill Rhodes, went to State, where Bill placed fourth. Mike Patterson was chosen President of the D-Club. Jimmy Ratliff was chosen Secretary, and Terry Mauk was chosen Treasurer. Sara Beal, Cynthia Banfill, Deanne Daniels, and Linda Newman were wrestling queen candidates. Linda Cirrens was crowned Wrestling Queen. Mark Ward, Terry Mauk, Larry Alley, Larry Bowers, and Ronnie Howard went out for track. Maxine MacKay, Sherri Wyatt, Sara Beal, Ronnie Howard and Sally McCune joined Dramatics Club. Sara and Maxine got I's on their readings at League, Sherri got a II. Mary Berndsen, and Sally Mauk participated in duet acting at District. Cris Cooley, Connie Cooley, and Linda Cirrens were elected cheerleaders. Linda Brewer was elected President of the Pep Club. Sally Mauk was chosen Vice-President, and Mary Lou Bcrndsen was chosen Secretary. Sara Beal was President of Y-Teens. Sally Mauk was Vice-President, Vicki Comelison was Secretary, and Linda Newman was Treasurer. Linda Cirrens, Dianne Daniels, Anita Donnelley, Cynthia Banfill, Connie Cooley, Linda Brewer, and Mary Lou Berndsen, were on the Y-Teen Cabinet. Fred Darter and Sara Beal were co-editors of the Bulldog Reporter. James Ratliff was Assistant Editor. Sally Mauk was editor of the Yearbook. Mary Lou Berndsen was Assistant Editor. Anita Donnelley, Mark Ward, Larry Alley, Terry Mauk, Sherri Wyatt, Sally McCune, Larry Bowers, Linda Cirrens, Kirby Bucher. Roger Reheis, Mike Patterson, Terry DeVaughan, Sara Beal, Linda Brewer, Vicki Comelison, Mary Lou Berndsen, Cynthia Banfill, Maxine MacKay, Linda Newman, Cris Cooley, Connie Cooley, and Sally Mauk participated in the League and State Music Festivals. Linda Brewer was twirler and Sara Beal was Drum Majorette. Linda Newman was chosen Annual Queen. Her attendants were Dianne Daniels, Anita Donnelley, Sara Beal, Sherri Wyatt. Sara Beal was Honor Queen and D. A. R. Good Citizen. James Ratliff was a National Merit and Summerfield Finalist. Those participating in the Senior play were: Sherri Wyatt, Cary Schaul, Sara Beal, Maxine MacKay, Larry Alley, Nancy Somers, Terry DeVaughan, Vicki Comelison, Fred Darter, Terry Mauk, Ronald Howard, Larry Bowers, Mary Lou Berndsen, Deanne Daniels, Sally McCune, Anita Donnelley, Ronnie Hall, Arthur Jenkinson, Connie Cooley, Linda Newman, Linda Cirrens, and Cris Cooley. They presented The Egg and I. Of the 46 Seniors 21 have gone to school together for the last 12 years. They are: Larry Alley, Cynthia Banfill, Ollie Belt, Larry Bowers, Kirby Bucher. Connie and Cris Cooley, Vicki Comelison. Fred Darter, Dennis Edwards. Ronnie Howard. Arthur Jenkinson. Sally Mauk, Terry Mauk. Martha McNown, Linda Newman, Jimmy Ratliff. Roger Reheis, Bill Rhodes, Margaret Straw, and Mark Ward. The 1966 Seniors left a very full 4 years behind them at D. H. S. with great expectations for the coming years. 17
