@t(M4St¥i4tonty In the fall of 1951, thirty-three frightened Freshmen entered the doors of Douglass High School. On Friday of the first week they were initiated. The girls wore bathing suits with men's shorts over then,a baby blanket, carried a baby's bottle and had to wash their hair and not comb it. They also carried their books in a bucket. The boys wore ladies' bloomers, carried a baby blanket, bottle and also carried their books in a bucket. A school party was held in the evening. The class officers for the year were: Norman Dunagan-President; Pat Doyle-Vice President; Willene He ndrix-Secretary-Treasurer; Joyce Little-Reporter. The sponsors were Mr. Broyles and Mr. Johnston. Elsie Beley of Ednunton, Alberta, Canada joined the class in November. In the fall of 1952 there were 33 members enrolling in the Sophomore class, and Mr. Saffell came as Superintendent. During the year an assembly was given for the student body. The assembly consisted of two short plays and a musical number by Carol Bell. Glenda Sowle from Kremlin, Oklahoma and Frank Silvey from Wichita were new members of the class. Bill Valentine and Glenda were candidates for basket ball king and queen. The class officers were: Galen Waterman-President; Tom King- Vice President; Willene Hendrix-Secretary-Treasurer; Joyce Little-Reporter; Norman Dunagan-Student Council member. The sponsor was Mr. Seachord. The class ended the year successfully by winning the field day events. This year the class was out for money. They sold magazines and added the proceeds to their treasury for the banquet. Norman Dunagan sold the largest amount and received a pen and pencil set. A paper drive put everyone to work but a weiner roast was enjoyed at its close. The class sponsored a box-supper, at which the boys put on a skit, and the girls presented a play. All money making schemes had but one goal, the Junior-Senior Banquet. The gala event was the first of its kind to be held in the new auditorium. The theme was, Moonlight and Roses. The room was decorated as a rose garden in the moonlight. A delicious meal was served under candlelight, after which the students and guests went to the ballroom (the lunchroom) for the prom. During the year, Dan Helmer of Rose Hill had joined the class and Bill Valentine and Bill Rains had withdrawn. The juniors were proud to have a member of their class elected Basketball queen. Queen Joyce Little reigned over the court, and was crowned by Ted King, captain of the team. They were also proud to have Pat Doyle as the State champion wrestler. In September, 195U, twenty-nine ambitious students anxiously awaited the coming events. Election of officers came first with Willene Hendrix-President; Vice-Pres.-Virginia Detwiler, Secretary-Treasurer-Yvonne Sherar, Reporter-Joyce Little, Student Council representatives-Jim Glaves and Tom King. Sponsors were Mr. Saffell and Mr. Doyle. Carol Bell was the candidate for Football queen and Willene Hendrix was the candidate representing the Boys' Glee Club. The Typing II class, composed entirely of seniors were to publish the school paper and the Annual, both sponsored by the Typing instructor. Miss Lutz. As time marched on, pictures were taken and all were proud of their pictures. The Seniors and the Annual Staff planned a Christmas dance for the student body. The dance was a big success, students arrived in formals, and suits. Punch and cake were served, the punch table was decorated by Mrs. Jackson. At this time, Carol Bell was crowned the Annual Queen of 1955. During the evening the class gift was presented to the school. A festive banquet was given by the Junior Class in honor of the Seniors in the school auditorium on April 29. The theme was Stairway to the Stars . The room was beautifully decorated, and the menu of ham and all the trimmings was served. A dance followed the banquet. With Baccalaureate services, May 15, and Commencement, May 20, the Seniors finished their high school years in all the Pomp and Circumstance that could be expected.
