DEDICATION Selecting the recipient of this yearis dedication of The Quair proved to be a difficult task. As Douglass College celebrated its Fiftieth Anniversary, The Quair staff became aware of the many people who had in some way contributed to the beginning and growth of the College. But at the same time we could not ignore the importance of revolution and change for the year 1967-1968. Thus our final choice fell to someone to whom we felt a great debt of gratitude must be paid for both change and tradition. Mabel Smith Douglass is responsible in large measure not only for the physical presence of Douglass, but also for the spirit and ideals upon which the College was based. Taking the most active role in the birth of a woman's college in New Jersey, she alone fostered the traditions which are an integral part of college life. Yet at the same time she never lost sight of the need for change and adjustment. Her own style of friendliness and personality are legendary. Whether it was that warm smile and handshake on the first day of class or the tray of food carried to a sick student, she was more than a Dean, more than an administratorg she was a friend and a confi- dante. lt is with her that the friendliness and spirit for which Doug- lass is well-known began. ln the 1932 Quair Dean Douglass wrote: My earnest hope is that, as the years pass and the students of the future come and go, the old spirit of cooperation, helpfulness, and sacrifice for faith in an ideal may ever continue a living reality on this campus . . Y' This has been our hope too and we thank Dean Douglass for expressing it, but more important for being the embodiment of that for which she hoped. Thus we dedicate this 1968 Quair, honoring the Fiftieth Anniversary of Douglass College, to Mabel Smith Douglass for her invaluable role in the creation and development of Douglass College.

Beneath the tenuous solemnity of form A growing restlessness: formality engubfed in now, as taut minds recreate reality. From such change evolves traalitiong and from tradition, change.
