Dignity gives way to informality as beaming new members of the Quill and Scroll receive smiles and words of congratulations from parents. teachers. and students at a reception in the library. Leslie Brown hesitates in the warmth of the school before facing the blustery wind of a chillv fall day. Parents take pride in student efforts With stealth parents crept through the halls. slid into the auditorium. and settled into their seats. To conceal them from the prodding eyes of students, all precautions were taken to seat parents for the Honor Society and Quill and Scroll tappings. Before the inductions members explained the high ideals of each honor group. X'Vith a quill. nineteen upper- classmen were tapped into the Quill and Scroll. A week later the National Honor Society tapf ped twenty-four seniors. Proud parents greeted their elated children in the library and ex- changed the dignity of the tapping for punch or coffee. After following the schedules of their sons and daughters at a PTA meeting earlier in the year. parents returned to USF November 18 for consultation with teachers. Smiling hostesses and registration tables welcomed parents' entrances. Greeted by lengthy lines. parents finally conferred with teachers about son or daughter. With sighs of relief. they thanked teachers and left cheerfully after another day of Parent Visitation. The strains of MA Trumpet at Night floated out into the vast expanse of the Xlosque audi- torium. For the first time Douglas Freeman's gnsw-is band was the one chosen to play at the Vira ginia liducation Association Convention. The elated band members nervously prepared backf stage for the concert. and. with uniforms straightened. took their places on the Nlosque stage.
