Richmoncl-Petersburg Turnpike parallels story of school year The Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike is nothing new in Piichmondg it is history repeating itself. In 1824 a twenty-mile gravel road stretched from Nfanchester to the Pocahontas Bridge over the Appomattox River to link Richmond and Petersburg. Today traffic flows between the two cities over an 380.000.1100 engineering project which opened June 30, 1958. ' This sweeping thirty-five mile stretch of concrete and asphalt unfurled to Richmonders a landscape strangely unfamiliar, as curious Freemanites joined bumper-to-bumper traffic with motorists getting their first look at the pike the night of its official opening. During the summer months students were part of caravans of Sunday drivers lazily enjoying the beauty of majestic curves, open vistas, and the historic James flowing serenely beneath six lanes of traffic. YVhizzing to the Petersburg football game in November, Rebels felt a prickle of excitement at the thought of victory. The turnpike and its progress can be paralleled by the life and growth of Douglas Freeman High School. The daily advance on the doors of DSF commenced a busy school day as early construction of the toll road laid foundations for the future. The toll road and the school library challenged travellers and students to use modern facilities procured by the toil of others. The end of a day found weary motorists zooming home in a newer, speedier, more luxurious way while the liberated Freemanite searched for a quick ride home. As the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike cuts a wide swath through the city, so the 1959 HISTORIAN traces the story of this school year at Douglas Freeman. - 7
