Although the multi-lingual Mercedes has been in the U.S. only a short while, she has formed some definite opinions. She attended an English-speaking school for 12 years at home, and comments, My teachers spoke only English, so I had to learn to talk to them in English. In addition to Spanish, Uruguay's national language, and English, the friendly girl who would like to start a field hockey team at MacArthur also speaks French and is learning Italian. Describing more differences in the way of life in the U.S. and Uruguay, Mercedes said, At home, people kiss when they meet, but not here. She also commented, Food is different, too. . .
