Although the multi-lingual Mercedes has been in the U.S. only a short while, she has formed some definite opinions. When asked how she became interested in being foreign exchange student, the 18-year-old who enjoys ioking, reading and drama replied, I have a friend who ime to California as an exchange student, and she said it was fun. She attended an English-speaking school for 12 years at home, and comments, My teachers spoke only English, so I had to learn to talk to them in English. In addition to Spanish, Uruguay's national language, and English, the friendly girl who would like to start a field hockey team at MacArthur also speaks French and is learning Italian. Describing more differences in the way of life in the U.S. and Uruguay, Mercedes said, At home, people kiss when they meet, but not here. She also commented, Food is different, too. . . In Uruguay, we don't eat such a big breakfast, and we don't have so many eggs.
