T he newspaper has changed tre- mendously, says newspaper advisor Linda Howdyshell of the change in DM's General News from previous years. Most of the changes are a result of financial problems for the class beginning with the termination of the S.O. which cost the newspaper class 1X3 of their budget. In addition to this, the annual magazine drive, which brings in money for the staff, was not as successful as the staff had hoped. Because of these money problems the newspaper had to be- gin printing the paper on a Xerox printing machine. This lower quality print was less appealing to advertisors who would now not buy ads from the paper thus further di- minishing the budget of the staff. However, things did improve. The Athletic Association, which felt the newspaper built unity and school spirit, gave a donation to the news staff which was greatly appreciated, and it alowed the staff to increase production to twice a month. Mrs. Howdyshell says this is the first time in fifteen years that the newspaper staff and journalism class were combined. She would like to see some class growth for next year. Also for next year she wants to begin using the yearbook computer for set columns. She also wants the S.O. brought back for a funding source, and she would like to see the newspaper go back up to every 2 weeks. She says a printing source other than the Xerox would be nice. This year's newspaper staff con- sisted of News Editor: Kim Leeschg Editorial- Feature Editor: jennifer Gitzeng Feature Editors: Monica Carrico and Robin Criggerg Sports Editor: Bob Schneiderg Reporters: Lori Diehl, Wendy Lauckner, and Phil Savage: and Photographer Rodger Smigiel. These students en- joy the class and some are consid- ering going into journalism in the future. We always know what's going on in the school , says Moni- ca Carrico. Another view from Sara Morley, It's a challenge to have to meet deadlines.
