TO TE CHEMICAL PEDQTLE Substance abuse is a serious problem that affects many of to- day's youths. The Chemical Peo- ple , a two-part program focusing on this special problem, attracted a lot of attention in the Saginaw com- munity. The prograam, hosted by First Lady Nancy Reagan, was aired on Delta College's WUCM- TV channel 19 on November 2 and 9 of 1983. Local panels and town meetings accompanied the presen- tation of The Chemical People . Present at these meetings were re- presentatives of many different groups, including citizens, civic groups, schools, students and parents. In Saginaw Township, a town meeting was set up a Eisenhower High School. Two police officers, Lawrence Brenner and Robert Sherman, took part in call-in ques- tion and answer sessions that fol- lowed the television broadcast. Re- sulting from the broadcast of The Chemical People came many efforts to begin programs to stop substance abuse. Air Force ROTC Shot Down lunior Reserve Officer's Training Corps as an elective class ini high school was one of the main local issues of 1984. Opposing sides made their views clear in heated debates. The views of the opposition to the R.O.T.C. were expressed by Flor- ence Connolly. She was against an increasing attitude of militarism and feared high school students were too young to be exposed to military- type training. She was also believed that more attention should be put on assuring quality education. Students who became involved in the debate from Douglas MacAr- thur, particularly Andree Borrello, agreed with Mrs. Connolly saying, The money should be spent for the basics instead of starting over with something new. Douglas MacArthur teacher Doug Doane stated his opposition saying, It's going to cost the jobs of my colleguesf' The views of those in favor of Ir. ROTC supported the concepts of self-discipline, citizen- ship, student behavior and leadership skills. Finally, after long decisions, the Saginaw Township lr. ROTC was turned down by a vote of: four positive, one negative, one absenta- tion, one absent. As a result, the Saginaw Township Board of Educa- tion opted to withdraw any and all applications for junior ROTC. :ggi Heather Schneider, listens carefully to her instructer.
