STATE CHA PS LEAD DM KING AN ALL- AMERICAN 1 I 144!Boys Swimming Two State Champions, along with numerous Top Area Swimmers comprised the 1983-84 Douglas MacArthur Mens' Swim Team. Despite a 50'70 loss of state swim- mers last year, they stroked their way to a very successful 10-2 sea- son. I feel super about this sea- son, commented Coach Bob Oli- ver. In addition to this outstanding achievement, the Generals impres- sively finished sth overall in the Class B State Finals in Ypsilanti. DM strokers also finished 2nd in both the Arthur Hill relays and Midland Invitation and 3rd in the Tri-City Championships and Fenton Christmas relays. Two talented and speedy swim- mers, Wade King and Mat Curry finished the State Meet with championships. King took a first in the 100 yard butterfly lbreaking last year's state recordl and tied for 2nd in the 50 yard freestyle. King also qualified for All American Swimmer and received the presti- gious Walter L. Leesch award for being the top swimmer in the area. Mat Curry took the gold in the 100 yard backstroke and finished 6th in the 100 yard freestyle. An outstand- ing performance by freshman Luke Lagorin earned him 5th place in the 100 yard breaststroke. The last State Finals achievement was ac- complished by the 200 Medley Re- lay Team of Wade King, Mat Cur- ry, Ion Foltz and Luke Lagorin as they finished runner-up. Five special awards were pre- sented as Chris Bahr received Most Improved Swimmer, Andy Damore, the Coaches Award, Kevin Maize, Most Valuable Diver and Wade King received Most Points Award and Most Valuable Swimmer. This year's team captains includ- ed the support, dedication and encouragement of Andy Damore and lon Foltz. We had the makings of 2 State Champions who are not seniors. Midland 427 Vassar 448 Seniors Chris Massey, Scott lacqmain, and Tom Haeger led the D.M. Golf Team to a very respectable season with an overall average of 81.4. The team startedout slowly with three losses but came along to win 7 straight matches. Hard work paid off for the team with a 13 win 5 loss record. Varsity Coach Ron Stelter said that they should have done better in the Conference but winning the Regionals helped. The team was 1st in Regionals, 3rd in Conference and 16th in State. Chris Massey had an outstanding season with the low team average of 79.9. Hewas also All Conference 1st team, and was the Regional Medalist with a score of 81. Scott Iacqmain was next with an average of 82, and third was Tom Haeger with an 82.2. These two were also All Conference 2nd team. The remaining top 5 consisted of: Freshman Tom Hooper with an 89.4 average and Iunior Steve Sujkowski with a 91.9.
