As explained by Ron Stelter, athletic director, The physical edu- cation program at MacArtur High School is set up to provide all stu- dents with some important concepts about the relationship betweeen to- tal fitness and physical activity and acquaint them with a wide variety of basic techniques that can be used to attain adequate levels of physical fitness. Another important objective is to assist them in acquir- ing experiences and reasonable proficiency in some practical or individual activity, and then to make their own decisions about the physical activity in their lives. The following programs are offered in physical education: Freshman Phys- ical Education, Team Physical Edu- cation, Life Physical Education, Conditioning. According to physical education instructor, Pete Kaligian, Experience has taught us that regular exercise, proper diet and adequate rest and relaxation are es- sential to good health. This program, Conditioning, has a dual purpose: first, to supply practical instruction for attaining a level of fitness that can be success- fully applied to athletic competition, body building or that can be used as an aid in fitness for every day living. Secondly, our purpose has been to give a glimpse into the physiological and medical aspects of phsical conditioning. Douglas MacArthur's young men and women are taller, heavier and healthier than ever before. They can be the most energetic and productive citizens in Michigan. This is the challenge which the physical education curriculum will want to help meet. Academ1cs!115
