5 -is wiv' The 1983-1984 shop classes are an instrumental part of the educational process of young minds of Douglas MacArthur. There are five different courses: Woodshop, which teaches students how to use machines such as the jigsaw and the band saw. Students in the class also use their layout skills to put projects together which have been presented by the course instructor, Mr. Bilby. Students in the Electronics class learn basic electronic principles by means of constructing and analyz- ing circuits, using volt-meters, fre- quency units and generators. The electronics teacher is Mr. Lutzke. Auto Shop teaches students how to fix cars. First of all they deter- mine the problem with the car, then they enploy steps to fix it. This class is taught by Mr. Scherzer. Metal Fab Shop develops basic skills which help students to find entry level jobs in the future. This class is taught by Mr. Tomsich. Architectural drawing class teaches students how to design layouts of houses and other projects by using precision instruments. Social Science classes include a wide variety of choices: American history, world cultures, consumer ed., economics, government, world history, You and the Law, psychology, advanced psychology, and problems in society. Most of the courses are involved with a number of major activities throughout the year, such as field trips to the Nuclear Power Plant in Midland or to the Grey Iron , Foundry. The advanced pysch. class students work outside of school, at places such as the Millet Learning Center, Kempton Elementary School, and the Hoyt Nursing Home. Outside speakers come in throughout the year to supplement class instruction. A sampling of these would be Ellis Ivy, former Plant Manager of G.M.g a Polish immigrant, Dr. Mendelius, Director of the Polish Institute at Saginaw Valley College, or speakers from the F.B.I.
