Q' A- ' General Douglas MacArthur C1880-19640 ' A few men assembled and voted to distinguish a school with the name of a very popular contemporary national hero. Those who chose the name Douglas MacArthur High Schoolf, were hardly aware of the imprint this title was to make on each of our lives. We, as students, banding together and determining to uphold the ideals of honor, diligence and in- tegrity can become a living memorial to one of our nation's greatest patriots. General MacArthur, who felt there was strength in meeknessf' regarded honors as superfluous. To him, each new honor served only to remove emphasis from his ideals and place it on personality. Honor without honors was his ideal of a man, Here lies the key to his character. General of the United States Army Douglas Mac- Arthur would not necessarily place tl1e mere naming of a school high among his list of honors. If, how- ever, he could be assured that every young person walking out of that school to face the world took with him the driving ambition to measure up to the standard of excellence for which he so ardently stood, General MacArthur would be proud to know that he had not stood in vain. To prove that he had imparted to the nation's youth but a piece of his burning desire for moral excellence would he the greatest honor man could devise to please so valiant a soldier.
