INTRODUCTION 7 i e t ? 5 2 8 INTRODUCTION Time To Dedicate We see him first as a teacher, an art instructor at DHS . . . willing to give a second chance to one who has sincerely tried . . . ready to laugh, even when the joke is aimed at himself. We see him as an enthusiast in sports, whether it be collecting the admission tickets, filming a football game from the crows nest, or making posters for the team to arouse spirit. We see him as the yearbook advisor, full of ideas and always striving for the best. We always see him as busy as a beaver, working on the scenery for plays, planning the decorations for the prom, trying to improve and help our school in every way he can. He is a dedicated man. His accomplishments in only two years as a teacher at DHS are so worthy of being recognized. Yet we see him not only as a teacher, but as a true friend-an all around good guy? He has honored our school with his countless efforts toward the best. He has a quality which is not such a commonplace any- more-pride. The students of DHS owe him a debt of grati- tude. Hence, the phrase, H ow can we ever repay you?', In this small but meaningful way, the yearbook editors honor him by proudly and sin- cerely dedicating the 1969 Copper Kettle to Mr. Laverne Mosher. 55,15 1 '41 ,Q 'W 1 f 1 E, The Senior Class of ,69 yells during the spirit cup competition at the first pep assembly. The new Seniors tooh the reins of leadership as the new year began. The close of summer came all too soon as school opened on August 27. The new Freshmen wandered around the halls looking for classes, going in the wrong restrooms, and generally acting like the newcomers that they were. The new Seniors quickly took power as the leading upper classmen, while the Juniors moved up closer to the day when they would run the school. Our foreign exchange student, Su- sanne Christiansen, from Denmark, was introduced to the studentbody at the AFS mixer dance early in Septem- ber. The first pep assembly brought out most of the school, and the Sopho- mores took the pep cup for the first time. The beginning of school brought with it all the joys of going to DHS, teachers, tests, getting kicked out of the library, football games, and the visions of the future winter months and activities. E The 1968-69 cheerleaders are shown here taking Gooch, Anna Castillo, Pat Dgnigly and Buppie time out from their many duties. They We Helm. New Senior members of National Honor Society repeat the pledge at the formal induction. The ceremony took place in split assemblies. STUDENT LIFE 13 ....,.,,X fr f'i . Q. ,,,x f s . - The month of October brought with it the annual FFA Rodeo. Aspiring cowboys rode steers, barrel raced, and roped cattle. Held at the county fair- grounds, this event is becoming one of the most popular of all events in the fall. Tri-Hi-Y initiated its new members during the Amphi football game. Dressed in costumes appropriate to the verse on their backs, they paraded for the fans during the game. Pep assemblies before the football games helped to raise spirit for the top-ranked Dawgs during October, as they easily defeated foes Catalina and Amphi. Early October also became preparation time for the coming D- week and initiation. The FFA Rodeo in October saw many students steer riding and calf roping. Skipper Adams tries his luck at roping a calf during the long day event. Falling off can be just as hard as staying on in steer riding, Steve Ewing learns, as Bob Gierke and Ron Grainger look on. S 14 STUDENT LIFE The Tri-Hi-Y Hswingersi' pose for their mug shot during the Amphi football game. The initi- ation included a trip to the cemetery. Cheerleaders Raul Celaya, Jim Pursley, and Frank Melendez pose for their picture in the locker room following the pep rally where they showed off their precision cheers to the crowd. The boy's afternoon sewing circle cordially invite you to their daily sit-in on an abandoned bench before sixth period between the fourth and fifth wings. FFA Rodeo Sparks Earl October The freshman coaches, Mr. Anaya and Mr. Smith ex- press concern for their team during Catalina game. In spite of their grim expression, Douglas won, 20-0. The pep assembly for the Catalina game brought out HSuper Cecil and his football team. Gary James las- sos the Trojan horse saving Douglas. Completely reorganized this year, D- Day included daily activities. Each class was given a particular day to plaster the school with posters and to promote spirit in any Way possible. Monday was the Freshman Day While Tuesday the Sophomores took over. On Wednesday, the annual painting of the MDN by the Freshman boys took place under the udirectionn of the Senior HD Club members, While the Juniors had their day for raising spirit. Thursday rolled around and the Spirit rose to a climax during the day-long Freshman initiation. The parade spon- sored by Tri-Hi-Y, the pep rally in the gym Where the seniors received the pepcup, and the giant bon fire which urged victory over Palo Verde took place that night. On Friday the Week's activities were brought to a close at the Homecoming game vvhen the Bulldogs defeated the Titans, 141-7. Freshmen boys work hard under the constant supervision of the Seniors. I n spite of all the cleaning and painting of the D , everyone seemed to enjoy the work. Pete Ortega indoctrinates the Freshmen into the Senior Power philosophy during Initiation Day '68. Seniors ruled during initiation day making the Freshmen sing, dance, and carry books. Here some girls build a pyramid under the watchful eyes of Senior lean H uish and many underclass- 772671. Frank Melendez I number 80j pushes through his opponents tackle for a yardage gain in the St. Mary's Championship game, but Douglas lost 27-14. It's true love at first sight for both Ann and Ricky in Connecticut Yankee. 18 STUDENT LIFE Co-captains Shannon Lewis and Cliff Atkinson are pictured receiving the State Runner-up trophy from Mr. Hi Hendrick- son. WI TER MEANS TIME EGR FU November and December were two busy months for DI-IS,ers. The Jun- iors presented their play, A Connecti- cut Yankee in King Arthurs Court. Bringing together scenery and cos- tumes with a comic script proved successful for the class of '70 as they gave a fine performance. Football sea- son continued into December this year as the football team captured the AAA Southern Division Crown, their first since entering big school competition in 1963. The grid battles with Salpointe and Phoenix Union resulted in victory and a chance to play for the State Championship. But in that playoff, the Dawgs were de- feated by a powerful St. lVlary's team 27-14-. Otherhighlights of December were the 1968 Coronation Ball, the theme being Scarbourgh Fair, the first basketball game and of course, winter vacation! I 5 Coronation Ball royalty greet those attending in the receiving line. The affair was held in Dec- ernber. ,9 STUDENT LIFE 19 I FINAL EXAM DHS Students returned from Christ- mas vacation to face school and up- coming semester exams. Basketball season was novv in full swing vvith games every Weekend in January. The crowds yelled enthusiastically as the Bulldogs claimed many victories. Tennis began too, with a promise of a Winning season and the state's cham- pion player. Other activities also oc- cupied the mind of DHS students such as the AFS Student-Faculty Basket- ball game, which helped raise money to bring over our foreign student for next year. DHS received a new AFS student for second semester, Moham- med cTodl Tadilli from Morocco and welcomed him during his first days on campus. But in spit of all the fun and activities, January ad February was more than just a good time. Hard work and torturous hours of cram- ming for semester exams were on their Way. Only the Seniors, who in certain classes were excused, could hope to escape exams. Basketball action with the Bisbee Pumas resulted in a Douglas victory, 85-55. The Bulldogs won their yirst four season games. Wt ,f, WV, , , ..,.,,, , ., , , .,,,., .s 'f' to K as D ,... s l .J .U ..... Busy students found activities in the AFS Stage Review, NHS Junior Induction, Senior Class Play, baseball games, track meets, and tennis matches. As quickly as it began, Easter vacation ended and students were back plan- ning such things as the Hi-Jinx Car- nival, the 8th Grade Orientation, and the Band Concert. The Juniors burned the midnight oil planning for the Sen- ior Prom, Springtime Fantasyf, held April 22. The dominate May feeling was 'gschool is almost over! With that idea, every student was more active and enthusiastic than ever. To under- classmen, May meant another year gone and done with, but to the Senior Class it held a different feeling. Each Senior, seeing his years at Douglas High nearly over, watched the rush of Studentbody Elections, Class Night, and the Annual Signing Party hurry by. The graduation rehearsal for Sen- iors marked the beginning of the end of School '69 for all Bulldogs, for once, again, another year was ended. Seniors Gary James, Susanne C hristensen, I im Estes, Cecil Orosco, Bonnie Phil- lips, and Jeannine Huish try on their caps and gowns in anticipation of graduation. The '69 AFS Stage Review featured The Frito Banclitos as one of the many acts ojjcered. The annual afair nets money for our student exchange program. ' if A S 5 SQ ' up- M5 T ,,: .. sd' E ELILTY 'N-5, Without doubt the outstanding characteristic of the majority of our Student Body is pride-pride concerning DHS and pride as an individual. Everyone cannot be a National Merit Finalist or be on the winning football team but everyone can do his part as an active member of our school society. If you have honestly tried to enrich your life with the knowledge and experiences offered to you at DHS, then you should have pride in yourself. This year's Student Council has been an eager orga- nization full of ideas and ready to suggest new concepts and to change what they felt are some out-moded tradi- tions. As DHS grows larger we will become too large to continue with many of our traditional customs and events. Therefore, it then becomes the duty of the Council to modify old traditions and to establish new traditions which can survive our projected growth to 1800 students. We have confidence that future repre- sentatives of the student body can and will meet prob- lems as effectively as this year's leaders have. NIr. Norman Littrell Principal 28 ADMINISTRATION It is my sincere hope that this has been a banner year in the life of each of you at Douglas High School. I also hope that your total educational needs have been fulfilled and that you are now better prepared and anxious to function as a productive citizen in the vast, complex and challenging world of the present. Although often overlooked, your high school life must be considered a most valuable part of your total personal development. Look back upon the 1968-69 school year with satisfaction in what you have learned and achieved and look forward to the future with curi- osity in the anticipation of that which still awaits you. May our motto always be: '4It,s great to be a Bull- dogln Mr. John Whatcott Assistant Principal 'NM-sa. 2 's S TO THE 1969 GRADUATES AND STUDENTS OF DOUGLAS SENIOR HIGH: The goals of the staff and administration of Douglas High School have been to encourage good citizenship, to prepare each student for entry into college, business or industry, and to assist them in meet- ting the challenges they will face as adult members of society. As you and each graduate of Douglas High School since 1923 is undoubtedly aware, Mr. Paul H. Huber, retiring administrator, de- serves great credit for the growth and development of Douglas High School. He has always had the well being and success of the individ- ual student foremost in his vision, We acknowledge with gratitude his many years of service. Our future objectives are to continue expanding the curriculum with emphasis focused on vocational education and training. To each of you, good luck in your future endeavors. Ronald Jenkin Superintendent -Q. In 45 years, I have seen Douglas High School grow from an enrollment of 350 students to 1250, grow out of Kid Day and Ditch Day into the serious business for which a school is intended - educationg replace organizations patterned after sororities and fraternities with clubs that have constructive objectives, expand its curriculum and structure it with pathways that all lead to graduationg integrate without incident and with every boy and girl given the opportunity to succeed to the degree that his ability permitsg found HD Day with all its traditions that mold a student body into a singleness of purpose, form an active chapter of the National Honor Society with its members using their academic talents to assist students who are less fortunate intellectuallyg send its graduates to schools of higher learning in ever-increasing numbers, inspire its student body to personal conduct that has gained a high reputation and recognition throughout the state, observe its graduates with pride as they have succeeded in every walk of life. To those of you who will be graduates of Douglas High School, you can well be proud of your alma mater, No finer four years could be experienced anywhere. Rated No. 2 in the state, as well as AAA Southern Division champs, the Dawg's opened play with a convincing shut- out to the Bowie Bears and entered the state's toughest league with a 141-13 squeeze over Salpointe. Then came Bisbee who held the Dawgs to a 6-6 tie. Coach Sharpls defense and offense began to pull to- gether in the following games as they knocked off Cata- lina 39-6, Tucson 21-13, Palo Verde 14-7, and Amphi 28-O with an impressive 25.5-point average. The Rincon Rangers put down the Dawgs, 12-13. After crushing Pueblo, 19-7, and Sunnyside, 32-0, the Dawgs worked their way to a Southern Division Champ- ionship rematch with Salpointe. The Lancers lost their chance for the c'Big AAAU. With the final score 14--13, DHS came home with the Southern Division AAA title. Going for the State title the Dawgs broke Phoenix Union 7-0. SPORTS 143 GIRL ' TENN S W NS FEW MATCHE The Girls Varsity and Junior Var- sity team began practice last Decem- ber in preparation for their first match. This year the team began with few experienced players, and this handicap has been the main reason for the team's record. With the season half over, the record for the Varsity and also the JV squad is 1 win and 5 losses. The Frosh on the other hand had a very good season. Ending it with a 6-3 record, Mrs. Downs says that there are very good prospects for next year's J V and Varsity teams. 3 4 Freshman tennis coach Mrs. Agnes Downs poses on the ten- nis courts. The layouts have been drawn, the pictures cropped, the copy written. The story has been told, the events recorded. If you ever walked by 503B during 6th period, you heard the noise and excitement of looking at pictures, checking of galley proofs, and looking over blue- lines as it floated out of the room. Lights burned late many evenings as signatures were due and deadlines drew near. The staff worked and slept, ate and talked COPPER KETTLE from September until March. Every day of yearbook brought some new joy, as color pictures from Marty-Dess were brought in, the cover came from Killgore to be checked, or one of any number of joys that come with working on a year- book staff. We, the Editors, have tried to present, as much as possible, the events of the last two semesters. And now all the yelling at Dickie for pictures, the exuberance of Susie and Peggy, and the correcting of Margie's layouts is over. The yearbook was a part of us and now it belongs to you, the students of Douglas High. We hope, as you look back upon this book, your thoughts will return to DHS and the events of the 1969 school year when it was truly a time to be proud to be a Bulldog!
