A record number of airplanes were involved in crashes this year. s Space shuttle Challenger shortly before the William Schroeder - one of the first artificial heart recipients, The l985 86 school year was one of exhllaratlon and depression trlumph and tragedy success and failure death and rebirth and all the other human activities and emotions which together make up another year of life Events on the national state and local scenes Influenced us all A chemical plant accident In Indla caused many deaths as the world wondered If accidents like this were the price of modern technology When ll seemed as If we would be overwhelmed with death and tragedy In airline crashes some of us were shocked to the point of numbness with a new form of tragedy the loss of America s Space Shuttle Challenger and the seven astronauts aboard Another cyanide laced Tylenol poisoning and glass sllvers In baby food reminded us all of our vulnerablllty to the domestic terrorists A gigantic Mexican earthquake and flooding ln California showed mankind stlll exists In a lovefhate relationship with Mother Nature On the health scene President Reagan survived a second bout with cancer Rock Hudson was the first well known victim of AIDS and Louslvlle s Dr DeVrles came under fire for the quality of life of his artlflclal heart patients Murray Heyden and Wllllam Schroeder ln a more positive vein we learned about new research developments that may someday lead to cures for AIDS and cancer conference between Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev and Reagan was the first In years Reagan s Star Wars plan for putting satellites Into space was a topic of controversy Also In the stars was Halley s Comet The comet made its flrst appearance In 76 years at the beginning of l986 but at press time was a bug disappointment Americans were big on helping both themselves and other countries this year Many singers and stars formed groups recorded songs and donated the profits to charity such as LlveAld USA for Africa and Farm Ald America s sports fans danced the Super Bowl Shuffle along with the Chicago Bears and also experienced new complications with athletes using drugs UK got a new basketball coach Eddie Sutton and U of L a new football coach Howard Schnellenberger and their teams promptly went In opposite directions On the local school scene Doss also has a new football coach this year Jerry Mays Other changes IH the community Include the sale of the Courier Journal and changes in the staff at Doss Cafeteria Manager Jackie Raymer retired and Doss students honored her with a standing ovation at a special assembly The Doss staff expanded to 83 teachers, and added a fourth counselor CBIII Rhodesj and assistant principal CEldora GIVBHSJ President Ronald Reagan, as usual, provided a great deal of news.
