DlSTRrlag0nTOnl?Elel3 Simi-uP Expected to have a down year, Coach Mudd and his young squad showed the pre- season prediction experts not to count the Dragons down and outl The squad finished the regular season with a record of I5 wins and only 9 losses. A victory over Eastern's Eagles, then ranked eighth in the entire state and led by seven-footer Felton Spencer, was a fitting final game. The season began with an easy 75 to 40 win over Shawnee and another double-digit victory over Butler. Always tough Lexington Lafayette got the best of Doss 64-58, but we came back to take Male by four, 72-68. Heading into early and mid-season, the boys alternated wins and losses to end up six and seven after all LIT loss to Trinity 59-56. When other teams might have hung it up, the Dragons hung tough and reeled off eight straight wins before losing to highly ranked Seneca. A loss to North Hardin temporarily derail- ed the Dragon victory train, but the team bounced back with the big win over Eastern. District tournament play saw the Dragons win the opening round 6I-49 over hapless Valley CI-245 but be upset by Fairdale 57-54 as the Bulldogs denied Doss the district champion- ship. Fortunately the two top teams in the district advance to the regional competi- tion. An injury to Charles Mudd, starting point guard, caused concern heading into the sixth region tourney. Southwest Chris- tian was the opening round foe and victim of Doss 64-57. The PRP Panthers took on the Dragons in semi-final level play and were seeking Row ll Coach Mudd, Chris Jarrard, Danny Leasor, Michael Grinter, Troy Cottoner, Marcus Davis. Row 2. Brandy Monks, John Sawyers, Jeff Emberton. Chris Hen Matt Beck, David Perry. Row 3: Coach Salyer. Willie Hudgins. Charles Mudd. Michael Bigham, Manager Shon Adams. revenge. Doss had upset PRP in the regional final game the last two years in a row earning consecutive trips to the sweet Sixteen, a rare feat indeed. A big pep rally the day of this game built Dragon hopes, but the Panthers finally won by a score of 6055. The Panthers may have had more talent, but this Doss team could not be topped for determi- nation and heart. All in all, it was a surprisingly successful season due to the hard work of the squad and the skillful leadership of Head Coach I 84-Boys Basketball Leon Mudd and Assistant Coach Kevin Salyer. Willie Hudgins led the team in scoring averag- ing I6.5 points per game. Leading percentage in field goal shooting honors went to Brandy Monks at 742. Monks also led the team in rebounds with IO per game. Charles Mudd led in the assist department with 4.5 per game. Also Hudgins and Mudd were quick with their hands averaging 5 steals per game. The team featured a balanced scoring attack behind leader Hudgins. Figures were Monks, I5.I, Mudd, IO, Jarrard 4.2, Leasor 4.l, and Davis 4.l. The bench was tested and found ready for the call as Lee Taylor, Marcus Davis, Jeff Emberton. Michael Grinter. and John Sawy- ers came to the rescue as needed.
