Joni Baker And Robert Whitman Doss, First Ever Finalists 'S' Robert Whitman is one of the two finalists of the National Merit Scholarship Examination, of the 150 Doss students who took the test this past summer. Robert currently holds a 4.0 average, and he plans to attend college after graduation from high school and become an Electrical engineer. After completing college, Robert would like to work in a big city. Roberts feelings about winning are somewhat mixed. He also says that among the benefits of taking the test is that you will get an idea of what the S.A.T. is like. lf you decide to take the National Merit Scholarship Examination, Robert recommends studying the study guide for a few months until you 're confident with yourself about the test. He doesn 't feel that there were any real drawbacks to taking the test. Of the hundreds of thousands of students nationally who took the test, there were only 600 finalists in the entire nation. The National Merit Scholarship Examination was taken here at Doss: it is a P.S.A.T. The areas most involved are English and Math. Robert Whitman is very thankful for having taken the exam. He can now have a choice of which college he attends. Mr. Whitaker says that he is very proud and surprised to be a part of such an honor. He says that it is highly improbable for two students from the same school to be winners of such an award. He views the chances as being about 1 in 2 million considering the number ational Merit 1 af QM f ml: :kg 'T x 5 .faitfbilif of students involved. Robert and Joni are the first ever National Merit finalists in the history of Doss High. Having two finalists added even more to this rare achievement. Congratulations! .loni Baker scores tops on National Merit Scholarship Exam - thats right, Joni is one of a select group of students from the entire nation. Miss Joni L. Baker was born January 15, 1965 to Mr. and Mrs. Kizer Baker. When asked what her Hrst reaction to her exam score was, she said, My Hrst reaction was complete surprise. My S.A.T. scores didn't seem that far above average. And I realized that I was competing against the best in the nation. After that 1 gained more conHdence in myself and my abilities. Asked to describe the test, .loni commented, The test was only as hard as you made it. The areas of thc test were math and English. There were, however, some drawbacks to scoring so well. The only thing bad for me was that sometimes people would not allow mc to be human and make a mistake. Right after the announcement of my winning, I made a bad score on a chemistry test and people made a big thing out ol' it even though 1 had made bad scores before and they didn 't say anything. Other than this lpeoples commentsj, winning was great! Jonis plans for the future include attending U of K. majoring in computer science and business administration. eh olarshi p Exam 29
