A Great Year for Girls Varsity For 1982-83, only one starter returned from the regional runner-up team of 1981-82 which had won a school record of 20 games. Many people felt that the girls would experience their Hrst losing season ever under Coach Phil Ritz. The team, however, was comprised of seven seniors and four juniors who brought much maturity and experience to this seasons campaign. The experts were proven wrong. The girls opened the season with a three-point loss to Butler, but bounced back to defeat highly-regarded Western 61-53. After a resounding victory over Iroquois 65-40, the girls dropped a decision to Holy Rosary by a narrow margin' One of the most disappointing losses of the season came at the hands of PRP when the Dragons suffered from cold shooting at the free-throw line and converted only 19 of 51 freethrow attempts. The girls then participated in the Carroll County Invitational Tournament and defeated the host team 57-56 and Gallatin Co. 61-49 before losing to Atherton in the championship game 53-46. After the Christmas recess, the girls began rolling - winning 9 of their next 11 games. Victories included: 51-44 vs. Central, 64-47 vs. Ballard, 59-43 vs. Shawnee, 53-42 vs. Fern Creek, 59-37 vs. North Hardin, 57-38 vs. Fairdale, and 44-37 vs, Valley. The Dragons had a very balanced scoring attack this season and were led by seniors Lulu Banks and Amy Thrasher who both averaged 15 points per contest. Stephanie Ellis, Ann Karnes, and Carol Starck were the other three starters and each averaged from 7 to 10 points. Sheryl Juenger, Mary Crutcher, Lisa Norton, Belinda Hart, Carmen Blincoe, and Shelly Towell each provided the strong reserve support needed to make the team really go. How high can you go, Lulu?
