Boys' Varsity Basketball N82-83 D King of the Bluegrass District Tournament - The Boys Varsity Basketball Team, under Head Coach Leon Mudd and Assistant Coach Joe Freshly, has Hnished another respectable season. Experts varied in their pre-season predictions. One thing that was certain was that the Dragons'schedule included some classy competition. The team opened the season with a trip to Fort Walton, Florida, for the Playground Classics. They came away with one victory and two losses. Opening at home with Butler, the squad lost a thriller only to later gain the victory when Butler had to forfeit due to using an ineligible player. Then the number one-ranked team in Kentucky, Male proved too strong for Doss, Playing the Bulldogs close through three quarters, the Dragons came up on the short end of the stick in the fourth quarter and lost. Camden High, New Jersey. came next and being ranked number twelve in the entire nation was quite a challenge for Doss. Again the Dragons played close Rvr parts of the game. but were overwhelmed in later stages. Among the better victories of the year were those over Western, PRP, and North Hardin. One of the few losses on Westerns record came at the hands of the Dragons: the Homecoming victory over PRP avenged an earlier defeat: and beating North Hardin was a morale booster because they were one of the best teams in the region. The season came to an end in the Dragons' opening game of the District Tournament. The Fairdale Bulldogs and the Dragons played such a close game that any one of several plays or close calls could have determined the game's outcome. Indeed the close of regulation play found the score tied at 56. Overtime number one ended in a tie, 62 all. bringing on a second overtime. Still both teams came up even and OT 542 ended at 66 for both teams. The last overtime saw William Ingram score with 45 seconds left and pull Doss to within two points. Rzirdale stole the ball on the Dragons next-to-last possession and scored to take a four-point lead which gave them the hard-fought victory by the Hnal score of 74 to 70. Seniors William Ingram, Kenny Ford, Dennis Hicks, and Chuck Shipley provided the experience necessary to get the squad through the tough spots. William Hnished the season with a scoring average of 15.8 and averaged 9 rebounds per game to earn himself All District Conference honors as well as being named to the All Sixth Region Team Underclassmen like juniors James Tyler tl5.8 pts and 8 reboundsl, Scott McMiehaels U0 pts and 4 reboundsl provide the loundation for next years team Both James and Scott also made the All District Conference team. Other juniors who played were Matt Dunn. Thad Cosby. Gary Hack, and Russell Weakley and they added much to the team. Sophomore Maurice Jones started 22 games and is an important part of future Dragon teams. Additionally sophomores Mike Potts, Spence Shipley, Mark Lyons, Damon Nalley. and Clark Carrol played important team roles. With twelve of Hfteen team members returning for next year, the Dragons' future looks bright indeed. 159 OPPONENT RESULTS Playground Shootout l W, 2L Butler W Western W Irquois W P.R.P.
