Singers Pepsi This year, a group of singers from Doss was selected by the Pepsi Bottling Company to represent them as the nation's first Pepsi Generation Singers. This group, under the direction of Miss Gail Taylor, has performed throughout the Kentuck- iana area and many surrounding cities. During the Christmas season, they visited many of the area's malls and shopping centers, and brought Christ- mas joy to people in hospitals and nursing homes. They visited Evans- ville, Indiana, courtesy of the Pepsi Corp., to perform during the halftime at an Evansville University basketball game. Doss High School and the Pepsi Corp. are pleased with the perfor- mances this year and are looking forward to success in the future. TTC' DOSS HIGH SCHOOL LOUISVXLLE. After a slow start at the Fairgrounds, Doss surged back to win seven straight games and finished at 7-3. The 1979 season marked the fourth consecutive winning season for Doss. To begin the season, a fired-up Doss team was badly beaten by a tough Trinity team, 49-28 at the Fairgrounds. WanKeith Akin rushed for 142 yards and scored two second-half touchdowns. Doss' first victory, a 26-0 romp over Fairdale, was the beginning of a long streak. Akin finished the season with 1,267 yards rushing and led the state in scoring with 198 points. WanKeith fell just two points shy of the Jefferson County Career Scoring held by Mike Northington of Thomas Jefferson with 412 points Q69-721. He also finished his career with 3,921 yards rushing. The senior trio of Akin, Sims, and Katzman received much deserved credit throughout the season. All three were named to the Louisville Times All-County team, Akin and Sims first team and Katzman second team. In the Courier- Journal All-State football team, Doss placed Sims on the second team and Akin on the Third. Also, Ricky Hare, Brett Ryan, Donn Chancey, Jeff Kuriger, Mike Katzman, and Scott Tomes received honorable mention for the All-State football team. State Fair and was rewarded by their placement in the Ky. Band Hall of Fame. Challenged by their early success, the band entered several area competitions and finished among the top three bands in every contest. The highlight of the marching season was winning lst place in the Moore contest. For the first time in several years a new look was added to the half-time football entertainment - Flag Girls. The band marched in various parades, including the Opening Day Parade of the State Fair and the Homecoming Parade. Homecoming was another banner event for the band. After sponsoring the highly successful bonfire, the band's float, in keeping with the tradition of the past few years, won lst place. Tiresome hours of practice . . marching in sun, rain, mud, snow . . . long, uncomfortable bus rides . . . lugging heavy musical instruments - all represent a side of the marching band few but members really know. However, this is the price that must be paid to keep the Flame burning bright. Wrestling Top row: B. Lenhart, K. Hawkins, T. Kirby, G. Shipley, B. Hawkins, D. Jones, R. Kirby, S. Henderson, T. As with most young schools, the first athletic teams did not exactly strike fear in the hearts of the opposition. We struggled and won enough games to keep us going. As we entered the 70's, Harold Quiggins was added to the teaching staff at Doss High School. He became a teacher, a sponsor, a coach, and a friend and advisor to many of the students. During his tenure as assistant football coach, there came an opening for athletic director at Doss. He was chosen for the position. He brought to the job two qualitiesg a keen sense of business and the desire to make the Doss athletic program the best in Jefferson Co. He succeeded in both. Doss athletics has grown into a highly respected power in the state. Mr. Quiggins left to take on the position of Assistant Director of Student Relations with the Jefferson Co. Board of Education. Mr. Dan Shephard and Ms. Cindy Woosley have been selected to fill out his unexpired term. We are confident that our standards will continue to grow under their fine leadership. i n llii i W- il- ,-, . We have gained recognition and more importantly, respect for these. This has been the last year here for many of us. We may leave with a small feeling of loss for what We are leaving behind. But we should all feel content in knowing that we have helped make Doss High School what it is today. When we think back on this year, as we will, we shall surely remember it as . . .
